One fairly good story, one not so good
By C.A. Henry
The Cowboy's Lady was just okay. I would have given it three stars, but when two books are reviewed together, I average the scores. Unfortunately, Amazon doesn't let us give half stars. The hero is Russ, who is chauvinistic to an extreme, but does have some redeeming qualities. His little sister is the only main character in the book that is truly realistic. The heroine is Taylor. She is okay, even though she has an unfortunate tendency to give advice and come between Russ and his little sister. She has some weak moments that show a lack of character, in my opinion. But at least she isn't as deceptive as her younger sister, the heroine of the other book in this set.
The Sheriff Takes a Wife is, without a doubt, the worst book that Debbie Macomber has ever written. The heroine, Christy, is weak and wishy-washy. She is so malleable that she allows her parents to give a huge engagement party and start planning a big wedding, even though she is in love with someone other than her fiance, James. She delays breaking her engagement and accepts shower gifts from her and her fiance's coworkers, even after she is secretly MARRIED to Cody, the man she really loves. She allows events and other people's plans to completely control the flow of her life, when all she had to do was say, "I'm not going to marry James." She doesn't want to humiliate her parents by canceling the engagement party, but later, when it all comes out, they still have to explain to all their friends why the engagement was broken, and that their daughter was pretending to celebrate with James, while having no intention of marrying him. It seems to me that canceling would have been the lesser embarrassment. This girl's (I hesitate to call her a grown woman) priorities are skewed, because she stomps all over her HUSBAND's feelings in an attempt to keep from hurting the feelings of her mom and dad and James, all the while knowing that it is inevitable that they will find out the truth eventually.
Today's readers like strong, honest women characters. This story disappoints in that regard. At one point, Christy even talks about the "ridiculous situation" that surrounds her and her husband, Cody. Yes, it is a ridiculous situation, but one of her own making, and she really doesn't accept responsibility, other than to say that she should have told everyone earlier that she had fallen in love with someone else. Well, duh. She refuses to be honest with the people she supposedly loves, when the fact that she is already married MUST come out, and the longer she waits, the worse it will be. Yet everyone forgives her and goes on like nothing happened, after just a brief time.
The dad in the story is a bully. Loud, obnoxious, rude, and domineering, you would think that after having to eat his words and apologize so much, at his age he would have learned to listen to what is going on before jumping to conclusions and blowing up. Actually, there are not very many likeable characters in this book. The mom is quieter, but pushy in her own way, rolling right over what anyone else wants, to plan Christy's party and wedding without letting the prospective bride voice her opinions. The brothers are adults in size only, laughing and joking while a serious confrontation takes place.
Debbie Macomber is one of my favorite authors, but this duo of books was not up to her usual standard. I believe that this is the first time I have given less than five stars to any of her books. I would give The Sheriff Takes a Wife two stars, and feel generous. The only reason I listened all the way to the end was that I was in my car, traveling, and needed something to help me stay awake. What kept me awake, in this case, was wondering just how wimpy the main character could get. She lacked a backbone, and the idea that a strong, rugged, handsome sheriff in Montana would fall head-over-heels in love with her and put up with her lack of character is ludicrous. Cody married her, then allowed her to return to Seattle and to work in the same office with James, while he waited patiently in Montana for her to find the gumption to break her engagement. He finally had enough and went after her. No way is that realistic, at least with the Montana men I know.
I guess you can tell that I didn't like this book. I would bet that if you listen to it, you won't like it either.
