Any day that starts with dragon arguments is going to be bad
Kaylin returned from the West March in one piece. Now that piece is fraying. She's not at home in the Imperial Palace—and she never intends to be. All she wants is normal garden-variety criminals and a place of her own. Of course, normal in her new life involves a dragon as a roommate, but she can handle that.
She can't as easily handle the new residents to the city she polices, because one of them is Nightshade's younger brother. On a night when she should be talking to landlords in perfectly normal buildings, she's called to the fief—by Teela. A small family disagreement has become a large, complicated problem: Castle Nightshade's latent magic is waking.
And it's not the only thing.
Look for CAST IN HONOR, the next dark and dangerous tale in The Chronicles of Elantra by Michelle Sagara.

Pretty good...
By Lynnmerick
I devour these books when they come out. I just can't put them down, but I'm starting to see cracks in the surface.
Having said that...At some point Kaylin is gonna have to stop complaining about the same things over and over again. I don't know how much more I can read about not understanding her familiar, lamenting not knowing "useful"magic, arbitrary cursing in every situation, and in some cases not being able to simply put two and two together. While I still feel this story, centered around an independent and levelheaded (most of the time) character, is good and needed, I feel it's in danger of becoming stale if the author can't get out of this cycle of rehashed self doubt and complaints after what is now 11 books. At least find something different for her to focus on. Much of the exposition and fears are the same book to book after the first one. I was more interested in Bellusdeo and Teela than anything Kaylin did, but like I said it was still pretty good.
I would hate for this series and characters to go the way of Janet Evanovich's Plum series; no growth, no change, no thought toward a conclusion...just caricatures in a paint by numbers story. It's not there yet, but hopefully Cast in Honor will show Kaylin attempting to be more in charge of her life instead of simply reacting to the world around her.

I received an ARC of Cast in Flame from Harlequin via Netgalley sometime in June. Because I’m a sluggish review writer, I took some notes while I read to help me compose my review. Alas my notes consisted solely of superlatives such as amazing, awe-inspiring, brilliant and wonderful. I simply refused to stop reading long enough to write more. So it’s fair to say that I loved loved loved Cast in Flame.
Cast in Flame is the tenth book in Michelle Sagara’s Chronicles of Elantra series. For the uninitiated, the Chronicles of Elantra account the adventures of Kaylin Neya, a young Hawk in the magical city of Elantra. If you are uninitiated, you do not belong here. Go back to the first book Cast in Shadow in order to fully appreciate the brilliant world building and characters, slowly established through 10 books.
Cast in Flame follows on directly from the events of Cast in Sorrow. Kaylin and her cohorts have returned from the West March. Kaylin is still unhappily residing in the palace following the destruction of her home in Cast in Peril. I was really surprised how the events of Cast in Peril and Cast in Sorrow had such a direct impact on the story. I would go as far to say, that Cast in Flame is part 3 of the Peril/Sorrow duology. Earlier books were more episodic, I think.
To me, the events of Cast in Flame were really unexpected and surprising. I loved how plots quietly introduced in previous novels, came roaring to life in Cast in Flame. The cast of characters get larger with each new novel but somehow they all remain individual, unique, layered and to me utterly riveting. I adored the trio of Kaylin, Teela and Bellusdeo. Together Bellusdeo and Mandoran are comedy gold. The story was well plotted and as I mentioned before really unexpected. Events opened with some great and surprisingly funny scenes between favourite characters, both old and new. The action was literally non-stop, with vivid battles. At times, I roared with laughter, at others my heart ached.
If I listed all that I loved about Cast in Flame, I’d spoil the entire book. It’s enough to say I think that house hunting, Dragons, Barrani and Hawks are all present and accounted for. Fans are going to be delighted with Cast in Flame.
My Rating: 9.5/10

All you need is love... bup ba ba da da... all you need is love...

Nowadays, before writing any review, I've started asking myself, "would you read this book again?"
Answer this time: "No". I did, in fact, put this novel down, read a few other books (the Tinker series from first to last), picked it up again, put it down, read 3 romance novels (Georgette Heyer, Julie Garwood), picked up Cast In Flame, read several more chapters, put it down, read a couple SF books (Robert Heinlein, Issac Asimov - one Indie) then forced myself to finish Cast in Flame. When a book takes me three days to read... I'm not having a good time. Whenever I picked up Cast in Flame, the song "All you need is love" (Beatles - 1967) kept playing over and over in my head, I desperately needed to read another author to banish the lyrics and tune before I again started wearing thigh-high boots and miniskirts.
This is not a bad book (hence the 3 stars), just one the author has written before. I get the message. Homes need love (I'll clean mine after posting this), friends need love, families need love, dragons need love - even enemies need love. They all need to understand what love is, and Kaylin will explain it to us/herself/them. (Including the clueless emperor - evidently he wasn't a Beatles fan).
Mini spoilers:
Nightshade's brother is causing havoc, waking up the castle. Ferals and shadows are rising again because of his centuries of living in the shadowlands. (Sort of a new plot, but not really, those ferals are annoying little ticks that keep showing up for dramatic relief. The only thing missing is Makkuron.)
Teela meets Tara.
Kaylin finally gets the home of her dreams for herself and her dragon roommate (all it needed was for Kaylin to love the house and say she needs a "home" not just a place to hang her hat). The home is attacked by an Ancient, ferals and shadows, Kaylin, naturally, must save it with her 'Chosen' powers. (Been there, done that. The last tower Kaylin saved was Tara - with words of love, naturally.)
The obligatory fight with the ancients, allowing the dragons to again to fly in the Emperor's realm. All the residents are frightened yet awed (been there, done that).
Kaylin's familiar again takes its bigger dragon shape for a short time to assist in the fight. Kaylin talks to herself while riding the familiar reminding herself that she loves everyone and will die for them. Severn again gets to use his chain/blades, to help save the day. (Been there, done that.)
Bellusdeo is depressed, she wants to be recognized as herself, rather than just a dragon broodmare. (Mentioned endlessly in the last book.)
Kaylin finally meets the Emperor (last chapter), she lectures him on how to get Bellusdeo to comply with the wishes of the empire. All Bellusdeo needs, she assures him, is Love and acceptance. (Not quite the same lecture she gave the 'Destroyer of all worlds', but close.)
Of course, there is a cliffhanger ending (Nightshade is missing this time rather than humans). Not to worry, I'm sure Love will save the day in next book as well.
All you need is love, love... love is all you need.
