From Publishers Weekly
Launching the Chesapeake Shores series, Woods (Welcome to Serenity) creates an engrossing but overly neat family drama. Divorced financial whiz Abby O' Brien Winters takes a short trip to her hometown of Chesapeake Bay at the behest of her youngest sister, Jess. When Abby realizes the extent of Jess's money troubles, she agrees to prolong her visit, even if it means seeing Trace, an ex-boyfriend who still carries a torch for her. As Abby attempts to help Jess salvage her finances and open an inn, she struggles with her quarreling family, Trace's irresistible attentions and a nasty ex-husband who suddenly wants full custody of their twins. Abby's relationship with Trace is full of chemistry, but it lacks conviction and depth, and Woods relies too heavily on contrivances to keep the story moving forward. (Apr.)

I think Sherryl did a great job of creating well developed characters
By Kortz23
This is the first book that I have read of Sherryl Woods' even though I own quite a few. To be honest I read it because of the new movie/tv show that are coming out on Hallmark Channel. I think Sherryl did a great job of creating well developed characters. She gave you enough information about their past so that you could understand how they got to their current state but didn't go overboard. In addition to creating well developed characters she also did a great job setting the scene. She made the town of Chesapeake Shores a town that everyone would want to come visit and live in.
An interesting story line that I liked that Sherryl included in the book was the relationship between Abby and her sister Jess. Most romance authors concentrate on just the main two characters and sometimes include outside characters into it at times. But in Inn at Eagle Point Sherryl did a great job including how the relationship of Jess and Abby and how their mother leaving affected their life.
One of my favorite quotes in the book was one that Trace said about how Abby was a good mom. I know author readers were all thinking what I was at that moment. Aww... Here is the quote:
"Look, being a bad mom is taking off when some of your kids are too little to understand why you're leaving. Being a bad mom is leaving a seventeen year old daughter to take over and try to make things right. You lived that with Megan. You know firsthand what its like to have a mother you can't count on. You will never allow your girls to feel that kind of pain." He tucked a finger under her chin. "Don't ever let me hear you question your mothering skills again."
Can't wait to read the next book in the series.

Not bad, not very good either
By Holly
This is one of those books that I found myself picking up at the store and putting back down again, repeatedly. The cover is very attractive and reminds me of a Debbie Macomber book cover (same publisher for both authors, so that makes sense). I eventually purchased it after looking up the reviews here on Amazon and was very excited to find a new author that I thought I was really going to like.
After reading this, I have to say it was just all right. The writing isn't bad and the story isn't bad, but it takes a long time to unfold with not much happening. I am perfectly fine with slower-moving stories if there is lots of local color and sense of place to the book but that wasn't the case. The setting of Chesapeake Bay offered the author plenty of opportunity to have very descriptive language regarding the physical locale but that opportunity wasn't seized. The small town setting also afforded an opportunity for great secondary characters that could have added color to the story, but that opportunity also languished. The main story just plodded along without any real "spark" and the book didn't really hold my interest. Again, not bad just bland -- I have read much worse !
In summary, I was looking for another Debbie Macomber type author and thought I had found her. In reality, I won't be reading the rest of the series and will stick with Ms. Macomber or Emilie Richards when looking for fun, light reading.

Family drama overshadows romance
By VLH
There have been lots of reviews for this book and I did not intend to add my own two cents. However, shortly after reading this book I read "The Best Man" by Kristan Higgins, and the similarities between the books were so striking (and yet The Best Man is sooo much better) that I could not hold my tongue.
Both books are "the first" in a romance series involving a large and complicated and quirky family (including several sisters) and their quirky friends and small community. Both are contemporaries, both are written with equal parts humor and drama, and both contain love stories. However, I literally slogged through The Inn At Eagle Point and found myself feeling stressed out by many of the interactions. By the time I forced myself to finish it, I knew this would be the last time I read about the O'Brien family. Why? Because their family angst and drama and pettiness and carping and nagging overwhelms the love story. Frankly, it is too realistic and I read romances to escape my own loving, happy yet dysfunctional family. Why do I want to read about other brothers and sisters who bicker, or about their insecurities or their inferiority complexes or their feeling that "Dad" or "Mom" loves some kids better than others?
On the other hand, The Best Man also has some whopper emotional issues, some very hilarious sibling interactions and family interactions, and some very painful and sad moments, but they serve as accents to the developing love story. It makes it fun to read and relatable without being a complete turn off. I was exhausted and tense while I read The Inn at Eagle Point while I was riveted reading The Best Man, and could barely put it down even though some of it was very sad. On the other hand, I can't wait to see happens in the next installment of the Blue Heron series and with the Holland family and all their friends who live in Manningsport, NY. So I highly recommend The Best Man to anyone who had trouble finishing this story.
