From Publishers Weekly
Drawing on her husband's experiences as a pilot and executive in the commercial airline business, Carr (Down by the River, etc.) spins a detailed but none too compelling tale focusing on the career ups and downs of pilot Nikki Burgess. After the death of her ex-husband, Nikki decides to move from Phoenix to Las Vegas to take a job at start-up airline New Century Air. Her friends Carlisle Bartlett and Dixie McPherson, both flight attendants and both recently separated from their lovers, follow her to Vegas. Unfortunately, Nikki's narcissistic mother, Opal, does too. Present ostensibly for comic relief, Opal continually refers to Carlisle as "that nice young homosexual man," which is less hilarious than the author seems to think it is. Nikki's battles with Bob Riddle, vice-president of operations, also grow tiresome. Though Nikki and Dixie eventually develop solid relationships with fellow pilots, the book focuses more on the inner workings of the airline industry and the challenges Nikki faces at work than on the characters' relationships. These airline details can be fascinating, but too often, the story descends into tedium.

great read, the heroine is the star...
By Gatorfan
Another great story. I found this story to be a bit different from the usual R. Carr books. Of course, it is about flying!! The heroine is a pilot, a woman in a man's world. She was raised by her father at his airport. She could fly before she could drive. Flying is her life. She has an ex-husband that was a total jerk. The story starts off with him dying of a heart attack at 47 and she now has complete custody of her two children, a 14 year old daughter and her young son. They have lived in the same town as their mother so there is a good relationship there.
There is a lot about aviation that I never knew. I now think I could run an airline!! she is the pilot of a very big plane and is doing just that when 9/11 happens. I knew the airline industry took a bad hit but I never really thought about it a lot, or about what all it entailed. I now know. Most of the story is centered around the heroine getting a very coveted job at a new start up airline. There is her crazy mother with her dog. Her gay friend that is a flight attendant but he4 lives with her and helps with the kids when not flying. Her best friend Dixie is also a flight attendant that has had some bad luck in her love life. And, of course, her bigger than life father and his dog Pistol. I loved her Dad. There are a lot of side stories going on as only Ms. Carr can do it. It is so easy to get sucked right in the story.
The actual romance didn't start until close to the end. That was a bit different from the 30 odd stories of Ms. Carr's that I have read. But, it was just as exciting to see these two characters get their HEA. It is a great read, I loved it and I definitely recommend it. I have only one negative. Bob didn't get it nearly as bad as he should have. I rally wanted to see that guy suffer. He got off too easy.
I was not paid for this review. I am not an author nor do I know one. I am not kin to this writer. I am a reader and this is just my opinion, nothing more, nothing less.

I stumbled on the first Virgin River novel at a book swap and was hooked immediately. It is a dream world but her characters are so
Easy to like that I found it hard to put down and have gone on to read the entire series. I read the review on Blue Skies where the reader did not enjoy all the technical aspects of the airline business but decided to try it anyway. I am so glad I did as I found that information only added depth to the story. If you like Robyn Carr I think you will enjoy this book and I hope it is the start of a whole new series. I read it on my kindle and really like the notifications I get when one of my favourite authors, Robyn Carr being one, has a new book out.
