From Publishers Weekly
A midlife marital crisis threatens the stability of a squeaky-clean navy family in Wiggs's latest, which overcomes a listless, saccharine start thanks to a rousing finale aboard an aircraft carrier. Steve and Grace Bennett look like the perfect military couple: Steve, a former pilot, has become an ambitious officer, and Grace successfully cares for their three bright, talented kids while he's deployed. But rips appear in the marriage fabric when Grace, seeking more in life, starts a relocation business, begins a fitness program and buys a small but lovely house near the Seattle base they temporarily call home. Wiggs's light, engaging style keeps the story moving in the first half, despite too many syrupy family scenes and a far-fetched subplot in which Josh, a fledgling pilot under Steve's command, is revealed to be his long-lost son from a brief, ill-advised teen marriage. This revelation widens the gap between Grace and Steve, who never told her about wife number one, and Wiggs balances their turmoil with a subplot involving their oldest daughter, Emma, and a hunky but predatory high school boy whose father is Steve's boss. But the tension isn't all emotional: Josh goes on a training exercise that nearly turns deadly, and Steve, trying to stop a deadly fire aboard his aircraft carrier, gets swept overboard into the icy Pacific. While Wiggs tends to nip suspense in the bud and linger on overripe romantic sentiments, her characters are sympathetic and her tale of frayed loves mended is sure to strike a responsive chord in a maturing audience.

From Booklist
Steve Bennett is a perfect navy officer with a perfect navy family, and he's confident that his world is just the way it should be. But his son wants to be an artist instead of attending the U.S. Naval Academy, and his stalwart and capable wife of 20 years, Grace, is tired of being the perfect navy wife. She wants her own home, and she wants her own career. She's feeling altogether unsettled, but nothing is more unsettling than the secret her husband has hidden from her their entire marriage. Nothing, that is, until the accident on the carrier. Wiggs has done an excellent job of depicting what lies beneath the surfaces of relationships--assumptions, misunderstandings, and expectations. She's created a family in emotional transition and has explored their feelings so well that we feel as if we know her characters. Readers who enjoyed Dee Holmes' The Boy on the Porch (2003) and LaVyrle Spencer's Home Song (1994) will also enjoy this emotion-filled novel of military life. Shelley Mosley

Wonderful, engrossing story
By Patricia Kay
It's always amazing to me that readers can have such different reactions to books. I confess, I'm mystified by those readers who didn't like this book, because I loved it. The depiction of Navy life was incredibly realistic and I thoroughly enjoyed learning about what it's like to serve on a carrier and/or land a plane on a carrier. I also loved the Pacific Northwest setting, which Ms. Wiggs brought alive so beautifully. But what I enjoyed most about this book were the characters. For me, it's ALWAYS about the characters, and Steve, Grace, Brian, Emma, Katie, Josh, and Lauren crept into my heart and stayed there till the very end, with me rooting for them all the way. This book is beautifully written and a real page-turner. Bravo, Ms. Wiggs! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Her best book yet
By A Customer
For two decades Grace Bennett has been the perfect navy wife to her beloved Steve while traveling the globe when her husband gets restationed and raising their three delightful children. So why is the devoted family matriarch feeling worthless and dissatisfied? Perhaps it is simply that her youngest is in ninth grade and like her older siblings needs mom less, but Grace thinks it goes deeper as she believes it is her identity that she lost.
Steve is bewildered by Grace's sudden change of heart towards him, as he believes that his career proves how much he cares for his family. Now deployed, he knows his marriage is in jeopardy especially since Grace has established a communication black out. He refuses to accept that he lost her without going down fighting as he loves his wife and children, but panics that Grace will not be there when he redeploys. When Stephen's ship is in troubled waters, Grace may not have a choice whether to remain a sailor's spouse with the overseas danger to her husband and the rest of the sailors on board.
THE OCEAN BETWEEN US excitingly plays out on two levels. There is the conflict between Grace and Stephen that serves as a reminder of how much family members sacrifice so that their loved ones can serve in a military that constantly ships out to hot spots (whom else but the military and their family have really sacrificed anything for the Global War on Terrorism?). The second theme is an action subplot that shows how dangerous the world is. Both the relationship drama and the naval suspense thriller combine to make a terrific thought provoking tale.

Rebel Ridge, Kentucky
October

The sweet, soulful voice of a blues singer spilled out into the room from Meg Lewis's radio, sharing a message of unrequited love as old as time.

I can't make you love me….

Meg looked up from the fabric she'd been cutting and caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror on the other side of the table. Just for a moment she saw herself as a stranger might: tall, mid-thirties with dark hair below her shoulders and a heart-shaped face with eyes as green as new grass.

She frowned and then returned to the cutting table.

The last thing on her mind was finding love. Her high school sweetheart had gone to prison for killing his dad, and when she took a chance on love again and married at nineteen, within two years her husband had killed a man over drugs and gone to prison for life. She wound up divorced at twenty-one and shamed in the eyes of the residents of Rebel Ridge by association alone.

Her saving grace had been a family who didn't believe in quitting. Her grandfather Walker, who was in his last days in a nursing home, gave her his house. Having a place to call her own and a family that always had her back saved her. They were fiercely protective of each other, and she was grateful every day for her brothers: Ryal, a master carpenter, James, who farmed and was the mail carrier on Rebel Ridge, and Quinn, an army vet and a Back Country Ranger in the Daniel Boone National Forest.

The only real skill she had was sewing, which was what she turned to in the dark days after her divorce. She went back to quilting during that self-imposed exile because it was a solitary task, and when she had finished the first quilt, in a way, she'd finished grieving for her failed marriage, as well.

Her father died a short while afterward, and her mother, Dolly, gave up their family home to Ryal, the oldest son, and moved in with Meg. They were together for the next fourteen-plus years, until just over a year ago, when Dolly remarried and moved out to her new husband's home. For the first time in her life, Meg Lewis was finally living alone.

These days the sad song's message had no place in Meg's world. She didn't have an unrequited love and wasn't looking for a new one, although there were times when the loneliness of living alone got to her. The song ended just as a gust of wind popped the screens on the outside of the house.

Though the window shades were down and the curtains drawn, she quickly glanced toward the window. For her own peace of mind, she had to make sure there was no one outside. She laid down the scissors and, without turning on more lights, went into a darker part of the house to look out, remembering the odd things that had been happening around the place.

The first time she'd noticed something was wrong was when she went to feed the chickens and the feed bucket was not in the shed where she'd left it. At first she'd blamed herself for being absentminded, but when she finally found it sitting outside near the water faucet, she was shocked. Because of the small pinholes in the bottom, she never carried water in that bucket.

The next incident happened days later, just before dawn, when she was awakened by thumping and banging outside her window. When she got up and looked out, she saw her milk cow grazing in the yard. She grabbed her bathrobe and a flashlight, slipped on a pair of tennis shoes and headed outside, muttering beneath her breath.

The cow looked up, recognized Meg's voice and then took another bite of the sweet green grass underneath the old tire swing.

"Daisy! Get!" Meg shouted.

The cow lowed softly before ceding to Meg's insistence and headed back toward the barnyard at a jog with Meg right behind her, yelling and waving the flashlight to get her through the gate.

The unsettling part for Meg was discovering the loop of rope used to fasten the gate had not broken as she'd assumed. The moment she saw the clean-cut ends, she remembered the bucket that had gone missing. She stared in disbelief, then, in sudden panic, swung her flashlight into the darkness, but she neither saw nor heard anything unusual.

Her hands were shaking as she pulled the belt from her bathrobe and used it to tie the gate shut, then hurried back toward the house. Once inside, she grabbed her daddy's rifle and a handful of shells and headed back out to the porch. She loaded the gun, then sat watch in the porch swing until the sun came up, wishing old Blue were still alive and lying at her feet.

Once she could see, she got dressed, made herself some breakfast, then went outside, still carrying the rifle, and began looking for tracks.

She found them coming out of the woods behind the barn and then going back the same way. From the size of the shoe print, it was hard to decide whether it was a teenager or a small man. She wanted to believe it was some stupid kid thinking how funny it would be to bug her since she now lived alone.

The problem was that there weren't any teenagers within five miles of her place, which shot a big hole in that theory. She didn't know of a one who would willingly trek through five miles of forest in the dark just to play a trick. Drive, yes. Walk, no.

Later, as she was doing the morning chores outside, she kept trying to decide what to do. Once she told her family, her brothers would raise hell until this was solved. She hated to disturb their lives over something that most likely didn't amount to anything, but, at the same time, she didn't like feeling uneasy in her own home. By the time she took the fresh milk into the house to strain up, she'd calmed down and convinced herself it was nothing to bother anyone about.

Still, when dark came she put the loaded rifle near the headboard of her bed, just in case. The next four nights came and went without incident, and she convinced herself that whatever had been going on was over.

Now she wasn't so sure. She hated that just the noise of the wind had rattled her sense of security. She looked out through all the windows but saw nothing that seemed to warrant concern.

The yard was as dark as the night sky. No moon. No stars. Just an occasional flash of distant lightning—a promise of the storm to come. She paused to watch as a possum waddled up the steps and onto the porch, sniffing around the pots of plants and then checking beneath the porch swing before waddling back down the steps.

She smiled. The swing was her favorite site for a retreat from work, the place where she often drank her iced tea and ate a snack, which was usually a couple of her homemade cookies. The possum was obviously looking for cookie crumbs. After a final sweep of the yard, she felt confident that all was well and went back to the sewing room with an easier feeling, anxious to finish what she'd started before going to bed.

A few days ago she'd been digging through some old quilt patterns and found one called Storm at Sea that had belonged to her granny Foster. She'd never seen that pattern made into a quilt and was anxious to see what the top would look like once it was pieced together.

The fabrics she had chosen were washable cottons—a plain, bright white, two different shades of solid blues and three different shades of blue prints to give the wavelike imagery needed for the design. The feel of fabric in her hands was, for her, the equivalent of running her fingers through jewels.

She picked up a length of fabric with tiny navy blue flowers on a pale blue background and unfolded it, sliding it onto her cutting table, smoothing it out, folding it just so, methodically laying on the pieces of pattern.

Over the years her fascination with color and texture had garnered her a reputation as a craftswoman of some note, and now her name among quilters was synonymous with quality. But it had come after years at the task. She had four special orders finished and waiting to be shipped, and one still on the quilting frame.

The wind popped the screen again. She shuddered but made herself focus. She'd never been afraid to be alone and wasn't going to start now. After cutting out the last of the pieces for the new quilt top, she locked up the house, took a shower and crawled into bed.

Meg woke just after daybreak but lay in bed with her eyes still closed, thinking about the day ahead. She was considering the idea of rolling over and catching another hour of sleep when she heard a board creak. She'd lived in this house long enough to know that the only time that sound happened was when people walked just behind the kitchen table.

Someone was in the house!

Panic shot through her so fast she almost lost her breath as she threw back the covers and grabbed the rifle. She ran out into the hall in her nightgown and bare feet, carrying the rifle waist high and ready to fire. All of a sudden she heard the sound of breaking glass and then the back door slam.

Whoever it was had heard her coming and was making a run for it!

She ran down the hall, through the living room, into the kitchen, then out the back door as fast as her long legs would carry her. She caught a glimpse of movement at the edge of the tree line and fired, then leaped off the porch, firing as she ran, until the rifle was empty and her heart was hammering against her rib cage so hard she thought she was going to pass out.

The sound echoed within the quiet of the morning, sending the milk cow racing toward the pasture and the chickens flying about inside the coop.

"Run, you coward, run!" Meg screamed, and then stopped near the fence and began to shake.

It wasn't until the bottoms of her feet began to burn that she looked down past the hem of her nightgown and saw blood between her toes.

"Just what I need," she muttered, then gave the trees one last look and headed back to the house, limping from the pain.

As soon as she stepped up on the porch she saw that the lock on the back door had been jimmied. Once inside, she shoved a chair beneath the doorknob, then turned to scan the mess the intruder had left behind. The floor near the dining table was scattered with water, wildflowers and broken glass.

What the hell? He's breaking into my house to leave flowers? What's next…climbing into my bed?

She'd run right through the debris without feeling a thing, which said a lot for what a surge of adrenaline could do to a body. But this time there was no question of whether she would call for help. She hobbled across the floor with the rifle, leaving bloody footprints as she went. Her fingers were still trembling as she picked up the phone. Her mother and her new husband, Jake Doolen, were too far away to be of immediate help. James and Quinn would already have left for work. That left Ryal, who worked from home.

She made the call, then closed her eyes and took a deep breath, willing herself not to cry. But when she heard his voice, her best intentions were not enough.

"Hello."

"Ryal, it's me. I need you. Can you come over now?" Ryal heard the fear in her voice. "What happened, Meggie? Are you hurt?"

"A little."

"Do you need to go to the hospital?"

"I don't know…maybe."

"I'll be right there, honey. Hang on."

"One more thing," she said.

"What's that, Meggie?"

"Bring your gun."

She heard a swift intake of breath, and then there was a growl in his voice that made the hair rise on the back of her neck.

"What the hell happened to you?"

"I'll tell you when you get here," she said, and then hung up the phone.

Ryal's heart skipped a beat as he disconnected. "Beth!

Beth!"

His wife came out of the kitchen drying her hands. "Ryal, what on earth?"

"Something's happened to Meg. Get the baby and our first-aid kit."

"Oh, my God. Oh, no…should we call Dolly and Jake?"

"Not until I know what to tell them," he said, and started out of the room.

"Where are you going?" she asked.

"The last thing Meg said was to bring my gun."

Beth's face paled, but she spun into action. She filled the diaper bag with stuff she might need, grabbed their toddler, Sarah, who was still in her high chair, eating breakfast, and picked up the first-aid kit on the way out of the house.

Ryal took the baby out of Beth's arms and buckled her in the car seat as Beth tossed the other stuff onto the floorboard of their SUV. The baby was unhappy at being separated from her food and started to cry, stopping only when Beth handed her a cookie.

Ryal drove as fast as he dared. He couldn't imagine what the hell had happened, but he knew it was serious. Meg was the oldest of his siblings and not the kind of woman who panicked.

He glanced at Beth. She was tight-lipped and staring out the windshield. He knew she was remembering a time when she'd been in danger and on the run. His family had come through for her then, and they would come through for Meg now, whatever was going on.

"Do you want me to call Dolly now?" Beth asked.

"Let's find out what happened first, but call Quinn."

"What about James?"

"He's on his mail route, and his cell phone only works intermittently out there. We'll talk to him later."

"Got it," Beth said, and quickly put in a call to Quinn, hoping it would go through.

Moments later she heard him answer.

"This is Walker," he said shortly.

"Quinn, it's me, Beth. Hang on. Ryal needs to talk to you."

She handed the phone to Ryal and turned her attention to the baby in the back.

"Hey, Quinn, where are you right now?"

"Just leaving headquarters, why?"

"Meg called me a few minutes ago. She's hurt, and Beth and I are on the way there now. I don't know what happened, but she sounded rattled as hell, and you know how much it would take to make that happen."

"I'm in the truck. I'll meet you there."

"Uh…one more thing," Ryal added.

"What?"

"She told me to bring my gun."

He heard Quinn grunt, and then the line went dead in Ryal's ear. He tossed the phone into the console and accelerated as much as he dared. He had precious cargo riding with him, and on the narrow winding roads of Rebel Ridge, driving too fast could get them killed.

It seemed that the drive took forever, but it was actually less then fifteen minutes. He pulled into the driveway and braked hard only a few feet from the front porch.

"I'll get Sarah," Beth said. "You take the first-aid kit and the gun. We'll be right behind you."

He nodded. Moments later he was running across the yard. The front door was locked but, being family, he had a key. He quickly unlocked it, then left it ajar as he ran inside, calling Meg's name as he went.

Sharon Sala does it again, folks! Suspense and a Cold case.
By Mustang Cherokee
This is the third in the Rebel Ridge series by Sharon Sala. And it does not disappoint.

It all begins when Meg Walker who is the only girl in a household of three brothers, gets to finally live alone in her family home. However, Meg begins to notice things done around the farm that she knows she hasn't done. A rope cut on her cow pen, and one early morning a visitor squeaks the only board that squeaks in the kitchen. Hence the brothers come running and chase the stalker off, and if you read the first two books of the series, you know the Walker men are not something to mess with, nor their family. They go on the defense.

In the meantime, a man who was charged with killing his father years ago, has come home to find the real killer. Lincoln wants another chance at life and love with his high school sweetheart. And since she stuck by his side he will help her with her stalker.

The storyline is superb. Linc is one of my most favorite characters as he has to believe enough on himself that he does deserves a second chance in life. Meg is more than willing to help him as she needs a second chance in life.

Sharon Sala draws the reader in so that you cannot put the book down and you must read it to the end. The only bad things about this writer is that her stories have to end. If you have not read Sharon Sala aka Dinah McCall, What are you waiting for? You are missing out on stories of different genres and exceptional story telling.

Sharon Sala is my go-to author for great romantic suspense!

NOTE: I received an advance copy of this book through NetGalley for the purposes of review.

WHAT I LIKED:

Sharon Sala is without a doubt one of my favorite authors. 'Til Death is actually the third book in the Rebel Ridge series but you can read it by itself. I've read the previous two books and highly recommend it because you revisit the characters from Next of Kin and Don't Cry for Me.

So, what did I like about this book? Pretty much everything! The action starts right away with Meg running into some trouble, literally. Meg doesn't meet Linc right away, instead setting things up from each of their perspectives. Meg's having issues with an unknown assailant and Linc has returned home after a near death experience to try to clear his name. When he finds out about the trouble Meg has experienced, let's just say he's not pleased. They were high school sweethearts and both still loved each other after all this time.

My favorite thing about Sharon Sala is her ability to avoid angst for the sake of angst. Meg never believed Linc was guilty of his crimes and doesn't hold it against them. Linc doesn't avoid Meg thinking he's not good enough for her. They don't jump straight into bed with each other, but you can tell they both want to. I love the balance of romance and suspense and when I made the mistake of reading some of this before work, I ended up being late to work. Yes, it was just that good. If I didn't have meetings that day, I'd have probably called in sick.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:

I hated that it had to end :)

OVERALL VERDICT: 5/5 Blue Duckies!!

Sharon Sala is one of my go-to authors when I'm dying for well crafted, well developed romantic suspense. Her paperbacks on my bookshelf have some of the most worn spines of any of my books because of the times I go back and reread her books. This is a must read in my opinion. Can't wait for the next one!!

Tess Lockwood drew in a sharp breath. She'd buried her memories deep, but the sign for Cold Creek, Ohio, brought the terror back. To face everything again—to relive it—no, she refused to do that. But they kept cropping up, tall as the cornstalks crowding the roads in this area.

She told herself that Cold Creek was a charming, quaint town but started to shake when she saw a sign stuck in the ground. Reelect Gabe McCord for Sheriff. It was with a few other local political ones, including a fancy poster to reelect Reese Owens, still mayor here after all these years. She'd tried to prepare herself for the fact that she was going to see people who reminded her of the past. But Gabe was the worst and she'd do everything possible to avoid him if she could.

Selling the family house she'd recently inherited was her immediate goal or she wouldn't have come back at all, especially at this time of year. But the day care center she wanted to buy would go to someone else if she didn't get some money fast. Her life's desire was to purchase the Sunshine and Smiles Center for preschool kids in Jackson, Michigan, where she'd worked for years. She planned to live upstairs and redo a lot of the space downstairs where she would teach and protect her young charges. The timing was doubly right since her renters in Cold Creek, her cousin Lee and his family, were moving out. Her mother had wanted to sell their house years ago, but it had no fields attached, and people hesitated to buy a place where a tragedy had happened. They had managed to rent it though, and were relieved that their cousins could live there for a while.

"Wow, four traffic lights uptown instead of one," she said aloud, thumping a fist on the steering wheel while she was stopped at the first light near the gas station. She needed a fill-up, but it looked pretty busy right now and she wasn't ready to run into familiar faces. "Like Gracie said, this place is so much bigger!" It felt comforting to talk to herself, as if she had someone with her, someone who really cared what happened.

Of course, she still had two sisters who cared about her, though Char and Kate were understandably upset that their mother had left the house only to her. On her deathbed Mom had said she owed Tess something for what had happened.

The Cold Creek Community Church they used to attend was at this end of the commercial district. She saw they had put on an addition. Piles of pumpkins adorned its lawn with a donation bucket out front for people to leave some money. Even in Jackson, you'd never seen something like that. Please Make Your Own Change, the hand-printed sign read. How she'd like to make a lot of changes in her life, banish the nightmares and the fear.

When the light turned green, Tess drove slowly to read the store signs. The doctor's office was still there but with a new name stenciled on the window, not Dr. Marvin, who had tended to her immediately after her kidnapping. The tiny storefront library they used to visit between times the bookmobile stopped by was still crammed between the hardware store and the bank. On the other side of Main Street she saw the Kwik Shop, where they used to buy groceries. She'd brought milk and juice—and two bottles of wine—in her big cooler. She also had cereal, bread, peanut butter and jam, so she wouldn't have to stop anywhere, at least right now.

Cold Creek had seemed huge when she left at age six, but she knew that was just because everything seemed big to little kids. Still, from the keep-your-chin-up phone calls from Lee's wife, Gracie, over the past few years, Tess had heard all about the recent growth of the town and its influx of wealthy retirees and weekenders.

She wasn't sure how people would react to her return. Although eighteen years had passed since she'd set foot here, would people still stare and whisper? They might not recognize her at first, but how quickly would word get around? They might give her those looks so full of curiosity and pity it made her feel ashamed, despite the fact that her mother, Dr. Marvin, that investigator Agent Reingold and the sheriff had said over and over that what happened wasn't her fault.

But was it her fault? After all, she'd run into the back cornfield and tried to hide when Gabe, their teenage next-door neighbor and the sheriff's son, had told her to cut it out and called her a crazy tomboy. That was where and when it all began. And maybe Gabe was right, because she'd felt a little crazy ever since.

In the space where the sheriff's office had been, she saw a gift shop, Creekside Gifts, its windows decorated with Halloween costumes, wooden black cats and corn shocks. Farther on beyond the tiny town square, a brick sheriff's office had been built next to a new volunteer fire department. The American flag and the Ohio state flag flew from a big pole between the two buildings. A police vehicle with Sheriff emblazoned on the side was parked in the small lot, but she saw no one around. Rod McCord had been sheriff when she lived in Cold Creek and his son, Gabe, held that position now.

He would be thirty-one now, because he was thirteen when her family left town. Gracie said Gabe had bought his parents' house, directly across the roadside cornfield from the Lockwood homestead she now owned, so they'd be neighbors, just like when they were children.

The third traffic light turned red and she came to a stop again. Gracie had told her about "the great divide," but now she saw it for herself. The west side of town belonged to the outsiders, the new folks who had invaded and kept pretty much separate from the townies, except on market day. Well, what did she care? Tess told herself as she frowned at a new restaurant, a tearoom, some shops—and an English pub, no less, in rural Falls County.

Her stomach clenched as she turned onto hilly Valley View Road. "You can do this, Tess," she said.

But as she drove down the two-lane road lined with tall, thick cornfields, she wasn't so sure. Especially when she passed the McCord place as the sun began to set atop the darkening Appalachian foothills and her family's old farmhouse crept into view. It seemed to leap at her. Even with the car windows up and the doors locked, she was certain she could feel the cornstalks clutching at her, rustling, whispering. She suddenly recalled being told to be quiet or the ears of corn would hear her. Who had said that? Mom or Dad?

"You're fine," she told herself. "You'll be just fine."

But she sat stock-still in the car at the bottom of the gravel driveway with the motor running until Gracie burst from the front door of the house and windmilled her arm to wave her in.

Falls County sheriff Gabe McCord left his cruiser about twenty yards outside the tall wooden gate of the Hear Ye Commune and walked closer. The place gave him the creeps, but the thirteen families of what he'd call a far-out religious sect had broken no laws and kept pretty much to themselves except on Saturdays when they had a big table of their produce at the farmers' market.

He'd received a complaint from Marian Bell that someone had seen a child at the Hear Ye market stall who resembled her lost daughter, Amanda, so he had to check it out. Gabe's theory was that the girl had been snatched by her father and taken abroad when the Bell marriage broke up, but Peter Bell had been impossible to trace. Amanda's disappearance didn't fit the pattern of the child kidnappings that had haunted his father and now him, but he was following all leads, desperate for any break in the long-standing case.

Although no one had disappeared on his watch, he still got heartburn over it in more ways than one. Worse, he was convinced his father had suffered two heart attacks running himself into the ground over the abductions. The so-called cold case of Cold Creek was always on the front burner for Gabe.

"Lee, how you doing?" Gabe greeted his former neighbor as he was walking across the grassy ground outside the fenced compound of meeting house, family buildings, school, gardens and workshops. Lee Lockwood was holding a forked willow branch straight out while pacing the grassy knoll. "Looking for water—or buried treasure?" Gabe asked. Most folks in the area knew Lee was a water dowser, which some in the area called a water witcher, as if it was evil or demonic.

"Oh, hi, Sheriff. Didn't see you coming. Usually we got guards out. You know, greeters who watch for strangers or gawkers. Got a lot of kids here to protect, including my two, now. And I really get into dowsing when I do it. Yeah, looking for water. Don't you go believing that buried treasure stuff you hear, nor the old wives' tales about locating ancient graves with a dowsing branch neither. It's just we could use another well since the water pipes don't come out this far from town yet. Been looking most of the afternoon though, and no go so far. I figure when cousin Tess gets back, I'll have her help me. She's got the gift too, you know."

He pointed the tip of the willow wand toward Gabe. Lee looked really nervous about his presence, but then some people were. The usually reticent man was trying to cover his unease up with talk.

Lee rushed on, frowning so hard his forehead furrowed. "Least Tess used to be good at it when she was a little kid. But I 'spose she don't want to be reminded of any of the old times."

"No. Me neither, but it's still an open case. Grace told me Teresa—that is, Tess—is coming back for a while to sell the old place. But aren't you going to miss living at the Lockwood house? Grace said your kids were doing fine in the public school, so why shift them here after only two months this year?"

"There's lots of benefits here. Protection from the world. Closeness to God through Bright Star, other things."

It was getting dark as the sun sank behind the tops of the hills where rain clouds were gathering. Gabe wanted to get this over with, but he stared into the face of the earnest young man and hesitated to get him involved. He was a first cousin to Teresa, now called Tess, Lockwood, the first child taken in the two—or maybe three—kidnappings of young girls.

"Brice Monson has everyone here calling him Bright Star?" Gabe asked.

"Those who trust his guidance. 'You do well to heed a light that shines in a dark place until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.' That's the way we look at Brice. The bright morning star in a dark world."

Gabe decided not to get into it with his former neighbor, who had just moved out last week. He'd seen Grace was still there, sweeping the front porch, waiting for Tess at the very house where the first kidnapping had happened when his dad was sheriff. That afternoon Gabe was supposed to be watching several neighbor kids. Thank God Tess had come back alive, because the other two—if Amanda was one—had not come back at all.

"See you later," Gabe said. He headed for the gate to the compound.

"Oh, hey, forgot to tell you," Lee called after him. "Everyone's down by the creek picking up walnuts to sell at the farmers' market, even Bright Star. He let me stay here because we need a new water well, like I said."

The compound did look deserted. Gabe walked back toward Lee. Was the man shaking or was that willow limb quivering in his hands of its own accord?

"You tell him I'll be back tomorrow morning a little after ten," Gabe said, hoping Lee was listening. He looked transfixed, staring at the ground where the stick seemed to point like a skinny, crooked finger. Was Lee putting on a show for him? Gabe didn't really believe in dowsing any more than he believed Brice Monson was some sort of modern-day messiah. But Lee looked so amazed that Gabe could only hope he'd remember to pass on his message.

As he strode back to the cruiser, Gabe couldn't help thinking Monson had picked a weird time to order everyone down by Cold Creek to pick up walnuts. Darkness setting in, a rainstorm coming. Gabe had helped his dad collect walnuts down there once. His hands were stained brown from it, and he'd run around the house pretending it was spattered, dried blood until he caught heck from his mother. "Blood on someone's hands is not fun and games!" she'd scolded him.

Did Lee actually have to get Monson's permission to stay behind? he wondered. This place was starting to sound worse than boot camp. Gabe was glad he hadn't mentioned what he wanted here. Monson might not agree to bring all the girls about Amanda's age for a lineup to see if the girl in the photo Marian had given him resembled her lost child. But Gabe was hungry for anything to make progress on these kidnappings—any lead, any hint, any clue.

As he got into his vehicle, he heard a rumble of thunder echo from the hills. It reminded him of things that made him uneasy when he needed to be in control, because it sounded like distant 155-millimeter howitzers, boom, thump, thump. Thunder often took him back to the day in Iraq when his Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit disarmed a huge bomb in a Kirkuk market before it could detonate. Even as they succeeded, other IEDs went off in the distance, echoing, killing some of the men he'd sent to another site.

After he fastened his seat belt, his hand darted to his chest. Sometimes he almost thought he could feel his army-issued pistol in its cross-draw holster from his duty days. Today he wore his weapon on his equipment belt. From his inside jacket pocket he pulled out the pictures of Marian Bell's daughter and the Hear Ye girl. One was a close-up first-grade school photo, the other a grainy, more distant one of the child in question, standing by the commune's market booth. He stared at the photos side by side in the graying light. Again, he vowed he'd somehow finish what his dad had left undone: find the phantom Cold Creek kidnapper, who took little girls and, but for Tess Lockwood, made them disappear.

Good suspense
By Rhonda
Shattered Secrets is a hard book to put down. You want Tess to get her memories back and help find the missing children. Boy is this full of drama, suspense, a little scary and tense. At least I felt the tension. It is a clean story but deals with real emotional issues. Child kidnapping, and drugs.

Teresa Lockwood was kidnapped when she was a child. She was gone for eight months before she was found and has no memories of what happened to her. She is single. She has come back to her home town to sale her house she owns now twenty years later. She goes by Tess now.

Gabe McCord blamed himself for Teresa's kidnapping. He was watching her that day. Now he is Sheriff of Cold Creek, OH. He wants to find out what happened to the other children that were kidnapped after Tess. He hopes he can get help from Tess.

Tess comes home to sale her house so she can buy a preschool in Michigan where she now lives. She is going through a lot to be back in town. Right after she gets back another child is taken. There have been others kidnapped after her and they were never found.

Also her cousin Lee and his family that had been renting her home have joined a commune near by. Tess is not allowed to visit as she would like.

Tess was taken from the corn fields right behind her house. They are tall and almost ready to harvest and freak her out. Someone is trying to scare her to leave.

Tess starts out scared and week. But as she struggles with the past and trying to remember she is getting stronger and braver. The more she learns about what happened to her it helps her to understand.

This is the first book in the Cold Creek trilogy. Forbidden Ground will be Kate's story. Broken Bonds is Char's story. I want to read both of those books now. I hope they come out soon.

The town librarian is always trying to get kids to read. She hates ereaders and people getting books from the air. She said it a few times as I was reading on my kindle fire. Having gotten it from the air. I felt guilty. I hardly go to the library anymore. I have three ereaders that I use all the time.

I was given this ebook to read for the purpose of giving a honest review of it from Net Galley and Harlequin

Not worth the time
By Sadie Hunt
“Blah”. That word makes more than one appearance in my reading notes. I didn’t much care for either of the main characters – I found Tess excessively simple and naive, and Gabe completely one-dimensional. Another phrase from my notes: “They talk, but I don’t care.”

Other phrases: flat, meaningless, and, in response to what I think was supposed to be a scene that conveyed how in love Tess is (“she loved just breathing the same air he did”), I wrote “UGH! Gag me!”.

I kept reading because the mystery had enough of a bite to it to keep me interested and I was really hoping the who-done-it would be worth slogging through the mediocre writing, slow plot, and flat romance. Unfortunately, it wasn’t.

Verdict: I wish I hadn’t already downloaded the second book in this series, because I won’t read it. 1/5

Quite a boring book, the mystery had some good points but was not complex enough
By Majanka
Shattered Secrets is a mystery/thriller set in the town of Cold Creek, Ohio. Tess Lockwood grew up in Cold Creek, where was abducted and held captive as a young girl. While she has no memories of what happened to her, saying it ruined her childhood would be a severe understatement. Now, eighteen years later, Tess is a grown woman, who has a bright future ahead of her, and who is certain she can put the past behind her. But when she inherits her old family home, and moves back to Cold Creek in an effort to sell it, all those old demons come crawling back.

Gabe McCord was the one in charge when Tess disappeared. He’d been a teenager, ordered to look out for the smaller kids. Now he’s the town’s sheriff, and when another kid goes missing, he digs back into the cold case, seeing a connection no one else though about before. But solving the case isn’t easy. There’s a cult in town, and they won’t allow anyone near, or any investigations on their property. Tess is struggling with her past, and a bit reluctant to work with Gabe. But when they start falling for each other, the past catches up with them.

I struggled to finish the book. The writing was sloppy, and could use another round of edits. It’s only an ARC, I get that, but it still needs some work. The characterization was too standard as well – we have the heroine who can’t deal with her past, and the hero who tries to save her. Neither Tess nor Gabe brings anything new to the table – they’re the standard characters I’ve seen over and over again in romantic suspense.

Small towns usually bring forth a sense of claustrophia, but this one didn’t at all. Usually, that atmosphere helps set the mood, but it’s lacking here.

Overall, the book was quite boring. The mystery had its good points, I suppose, but it never really reached the complexity I was hoping for. The writing caused the suspense to disappear almost completely, unfortunately. Had the writing been slightly better, I would’ve enjoyed this one more. The mystery wasn’t that surprising, but it had me guessing for a while. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

"Sherryl Woods gives her characters depth, intensity and the right amount of humor." -- Romantic Times

There was a merry-go-round in his front yard. Okay, not a whole merry-go-round, just one lavishly carved, brightly painted carousel horse, but it was enough to make Bobby Spencer's jaw drop. He hadn't seen anything like it since a trip to the Santa Monica Pier years ago on one of the rare occasions when his father had deigned to leave his beloved Virginia.

That white-and-gold horse was also enough to have drawn most of the neighborhood kids out on a steamy Sunday morning to stare at it in fascination. The only thing that seemed to be keeping the curious youngsters from climbing onto that horse was the presence of a beefy uniformed security guard lounging in a rickety lawn chair about two feet away.

He had a merry-go-round horse and an armed man in his front yard. Bobby was pretty sure he'd awakened to stranger scenes in the past twenty-eight years, but he couldn't remember when. It was almost enough to make him regret moving away from the family estate at Cedar Hill, where the nearest neighbor was half a mile down the road. Of course, then he would have had King to contend with, and that would have been much worse than this innocent little spectacle.

Only after he'd been standing there, slack-jawed, for a full minute, the morning paper absentmindedly clutched in one hand, did he realize that he was wearing nothing but a pair of boxers, and that any minute now, he was going to become part of the sideshow on his front lawn. Already Sue Kelly and Frannie Yarborough were ogling him with appreciative glances that Bobby might have found flattering if the two spinsters hadn't been at least seventy and, even worse, the two biggest gossips on the block.

Just when he was about to dart inside to put on something halfway decent and maybe drink enough caffeine to come up with a way out of this crazy situation, a police cruiser rolled to a stop at the edge of the lawn. The county sheriff—his own brother—emerged grinning.

Tucker's arrival was followed in short order by another cruiser. This time it was Bobby's brother-in-law, Walker Ames, who got out, cast one look at the scene and, displaying even less restraint, burst out laughing. He and Tucker exchanged an amused look, then strolled toward Bobby, making a pretense of looking somber and official. If he'd been armed, Bobby would have shot 'em both on the spot. No jury on earth—or at least around these parts—would have convicted him.

"Where's the cotton candy?" Tucker asked, barely containing another grin.

"Very funny," Bobby snapped, in no mood for his brother's wit.

"You got a permit for starting up a carnival in a residential area?" Tucker continued, clearly undaunted by Bobby's sour attitude. "We've been overlooking Frannie's fortune-telling, but this is a little harder to ignore."

"You don't have to enjoy this quite so much," Bobby said.

Tucker's grin spread. "Sure I do. Best time I've had all weekend."

"So where'd it come from?" Walker asked, his fascinated gaze fixed on the horse with its prancing feet and bejeweled harness. Someone had taken great care with the restoration. It was in like-new condition.

Bobby's scowl shifted to encompass his brother-in-law. "How should I know?"

"It is in your yard," Tucker pointed out.

"So are you, but I sure as hell didn't invite you," Bobby retorted.

"Seems cranky," Tucker observed to Walker.

"Downright irritable," Walker agreed.

Bobby studiously ignored the ribbing. They'd tire of it eventually. Besides, if he was going to get to the bottom of this unexpected gift horse, he needed their help. They might be acting like idiots at the moment, but they both had halfway decent investigative skills, and the authority to go along with it. Without a jolt of coffee, he couldn't even think.

"Maybe I should call Daddy and get him over here," his brother said, his expression innocent. "He might have some ideas."

Bobby frowned at Tucker, who could be an annoying son of a gun on his best days. "You do, and you're a dead man. Leave Daddy out of this. Besides, I'm sure someone has called him already. People always love to report to King when one of us is causing a scene. Who called you, by the way? Never mind, let me guess. It was the mayor, right?"

Sadly, his nemesis lived just around the corner, close enough to keep an eye on everything that Bobby did. Not that Bobby was prone to wild parties or overnight guests in his restored Victorian house facing the Potomac River, but Harvey was always lurking around, probably hoping for something he could use against Bobby. Bobby had actually caught him outside with a ruler measuring the grass one day, checking to see if Bobby was in violation of the town's overgrown-lot ordinance.

"Harvey did express some concern that you were desecrating the Sabbath, to say nothing of violating several zoning ordinances," Tucker admitted. "Though he lacked confidence that I'd handle it with deliberate speed."

"Which is why I'm here," Walker explained. "Backup, in case your brother doesn't follow the letter of the law about arresting the people responsible for public nuisances."

"This is not my damned nuisance," Bobby retorted. "Oh, forget it. If you'll excuse me, I'm going inside to put my pants on before Sue and Frannie faint dead away over there." The two women were fanning their flushed faces ineffectively, their gazes locked on him as if they hadn't laid eyes on a partially clothed man in decades. The truth was, they probably hadn't. He waved, clearly flustering them. He'd no doubt have tuna casseroles waiting on his front porch for the next week because of this. They seemed to think a man on his own was likely to starve, despite the fact that Bobby cooked for a living.

"What do you want me to do about this?" Tucker asked, looking none too eager to do a blessed thing.

"Make it go away," Bobby said emphatically. He gestured to encompass the entire scene. "All of it."

"Don't you even want to know how that horse got here?" Walker asked, clearly overcome with curiosity himself.

Walker probably wanted all the details to relate to Bobby's sister, who was bound to have a million and one questions. In fact, Bobby was somewhat surprised Daisy hadn't beat her husband over here.

Bobby was actually pretty sure he knew what the arrival of the horse was all about. Maybe not the specific person who'd sent it over, but that fancy carved horse was clearly part of someone's bid to get his attention focused on a proposal for the boardwalk development he was planning. He'd had half a dozen unsolicited calls requesting appointments to make presentations since he'd announced a few weeks ago that he had signed the papers to buy the last parcel of riverfront land he needed. In his only public comment on the acquisition, Bobby had made the mistake of mentioning that he intended to get the project started this fall in the hope that it would be completed by the following summer. Eager developers had been crawling out of the woodwork ever since.

"I'll leave it to you two crack lawmen to figure out who's behind this. You have my permission to take the person responsible into custody for trespassing. And with all these other people crawling all over my lawn, that ought to help you meet your arrest quota for the month," he said, throwing it out as an irresistible challenge. Tucker really hated being accused of having quotas of any kind. "Meantime, I'm getting dressed and making coffee. Join me once you've solved the mystery and gotten rid of this circus."

Unfortunately, he had a suspicion that wasn't going to be as easy as he'd made it sound. Just as well. He'd have plenty of time to whip up a fluffy omelette and some hash browns before the two of them made it inside. Something told him he was going to need a lot of sustenance to get through the rest of a day that had started out this badly.

Jenna Pennington Kennedy was a royal screwup. Ask anyone, especially her father, who was giving her one last chance to prove herself with this boardwalk-development proposal for Trinity Harbor, Virginia.

Okay, he hadn't exactly given her the chance. She'd read about the prospect in the Baltimore newspaper and come after it on her own, without saying a single word to her domineering father or her brothers. They would have snatched the opportunity right out from under her, either by going after it themselves or simply by squelching her initiative with hoots of derisive laughter.

Unfortunately, though, her sneakiness seemed to have been for naught. The man she'd been told to contact— the one who owned the riverfront property and was looking to develop it—was steadfastly refusing to see her. His secretary claimed he wasn't seeing anyone yet, but Jenna suspected it was because she was a female. In the development business, she ran across a lot of macho males who ignored anything a woman had to say unless it pertained to sex. Since sex had been nothing but trouble for Jenna, she had no intention of indulging again, at least not in the foreseeable future. Better to concentrate on things she understood, like riverfront development.

Whatever the real story was behind Bobby Spencer's refusal to see her, this morning she had taken steps to snag his attention. She'd sent the man an extraordinarily rare carousel horse, part of an elaborate 1916 Allan Herschel carousel with a Wurlitzer organ that had cost her every penny of her savings and the entire trust fund her mother had left her. She'd considered it an investment in her future. Given the current state of the stock market, it probably wasn't as risky a decision as it seemed.

If all else failed, she assumed she could auction off the carousel—currently under lock and key in a Maryland warehouse—and at least get her money back. If she succeeded, it would become the centerpiece of this project, and Bobby Spencer would pay handsomely for it.

Of course, in an attempt to prove to her father that she could be sensible when necessary, she had also sent along a guard to protect the expensive antique from the sticky fingers of curious kids and the remote possibility that a knowledgeable thief would try to make off with it.

The whole plan had been a stroke of genius, if she did say so herself. Too bad she'd had to keep it from her father. He might have been proud of her, for once.

Jenna sat in her car down the block and happily watched the crowd on Spencer's lawn growing, despite the halfhearted attempts of two policemen to get it to disperse. Heck, if she'd thought to open a concession stand on the block, she could have sold enough lemonade on this hot July morning to pay the guard's salary.

She'd give it another half hour, let Bobby Spencer begin to see what a draw an old carousel could be for the town, then she'd seize the moment to demand an appointment to make her complete presentation.

Despite years of being regarded as a second-class citizen in her own family's company, Jenna had complete confidence in her design for the Trinity Harbor boardwalk. In her favor, she had an abiding nostalgia for all the old-fashioned beach towns she'd ever visited. People could get gaudy seaside entertainment in Ocean City. They could find more elaborate amusement parks just down the road from here at Kings Dominion or Busch Gardens. What a quaint little town like Trinity Harbor required was charm, and nobody understood charm better than a woman who'd spent her whole life with a bunch of men who were clueless on the subject.

But despite her self-confidence about the end result, Jenna resented the fact that she'd had to go to such an extreme just to put herself on Spencer's radar. What kind of businessman ignored the overtures of an expert? His behavior didn't bode well for their working relationship, but she was desperate. She'd work with the worst CEO in corporate history for this chance.

More dispiriting, though, than being dismissed by a stranger was having to jump through such elaborate hoops to prove to her father that she understood the business as well as he did and that she deserved to be more than decoration for the front office. If she'd been another son, he would have taken these things as a given. Dennis and Daniel had never had to prove themselves. They just showed up and made a pretense of working. As long as beachfront condos went up and didn't fall down, her father was content. It annoyed the daylights out of Jenna that he never saw her brothers' flaws—and never forgot hers.

Not that her father didn't have more than ample reason to distrust her judgment, she conceded reluctantly, but he bore some of the responsibility for her disastrous elopement himself. Randall Pennington had been an overpro-tective single dad who'd never had the first inkling about how to raise a daughter. After Jenna's mother had died, he'd settled on boarding school and tough love for his only daughter, while his sons had stayed at home under his watchful but indulgent eye.

As a result, Jenna had abandonment issues. She also had control issues. Big ones. She'd never had to consult a shrink to figure that out. A couple of episodes of Oprah had done it.

In an act of pure rebellion—and teenage lust—she had married the most irresponsible boy on God's green earth. To this day, he hadn't held a job more than the six months it took for boredom to set in. She shouldn't have been surprised that his attention span for women was no longer.

But to an eighteen-year-old girl who'd lived a sheltered boarding school life, Nick Kennedy had seemed wild and sexy and dangerous. His ability to make her father see red just by walking in the door had been one of his primary attractions.

Nick had also been a helluva kisser, which had led to her second mistake in judgment. She'd gotten pregnant so fast, it must have set some kind of a record. Her only consolation was that it had been after the wedding ceremony, not before. Nick was already straying before their daughter's birth, which had provided Jenna with her second dose of abandonment issues.

Now she had a precocious nine-year-old who was the spitting image of her daddy in looks and temperament. If Jenna had allowed it, Darcy would be pierced and tattooed in every conceivable spot on her plump little body. Jenna shuddered at the thought of what might happen the next time Darcy went to visit Nick, whom she could twist around her little pinky. Discipline and good sense were not among Nick's strengths. And in recent years he'd been given a tab at his neighborhood tattoo parlor.

Trinity Harbor Revisited
By rcarey22
It was a pleasure returning to Trinity Harbor once more, this time the story centers around Bobby Spencer, restaurateur and real estate mongrel and Jenna Kennedy only daughter from a rich Baltimore family who has to fight to be seen as more than just an after thought to her father and brothers.
After hearing about development of beachfront property Jenna has a surprise delivered to Bobby's front lawn in the hopes of getting his attention so that he would be wiling to at least listen to the ideas she has regarding the development since he won't take her phone calls on the matter. Of course Bobby wants nothing to do with Jenna and the surprise she left disappears under mysterious circumstances.
After the disappearance of her attention getting surprise and much resistance from Bobby, Jenna packs up her stuff and her daughter then moves down to Trinity Harbor with a proposal that Bobby can't refuse for his new development which will make Trinity Harbor a place where families would want to visit on weekends or vacations.
Little do Bobby and Jenna suspect but more than fate has played a hand in their potential working relationship. Yes, the meddling King Spencer has decided the spunky Baltimore woman is just what Bobby needs to put his life in perspective and has decided that Jenna is the perfect candidate who would be perfect for his youngest son, and then sets the plan in motion. Things don't go precisely the way King planned but Jenna is definitely the motivation that Bobby needed in order to let go of the past and begin to really live again.
I especially enjoyed being reacquainted with the past couples from the Trinity Harbor saga: Daisy and Walker, Anna-Louise and Richard as well as the budding relationship between King and the lovable Frances have progressed.

Overall this was a fun and entertaining novel, and I can't wait to find out what happens to Tucker!!!

Small town romance.
By mahikahn
A fast, entertaining read. Bobby is a sweetie and in a rare twist he's not "Mr. Macho" as so many men are in books. I loved the way Jenna stood her ground in regards to her fathers business. What an absolute jerk her father was-he should have been pushed into the Potomac! He had no fatherly instincts at all! Jenna sure showed him!

Excellent Book
By A Customer
I have read all of Ms. Woods' novels and they are all very good. She keeps getting better and better. This story has everything, romance, humor, even a mystery. While it is light, it addresses some serious issues. I read it in two days.

Full of mistakes and discrepancies.
By Thea
This book contains so many mistakes that I wonder if somebody proofread it before it went to print.

In the first place, the synopsis on the back cover is misleading, since it doesn't give you a sense of how the story really unfolds. For example the back cover reads "Eight years ago (...) she lost her heart and her husband to foolish pride" But it was not eight years ago but only two (they meet in 1741, get married a year later and get divorced after one year of marriage), that would mean they parted ways in 1743 and get reunited again in 1745. Even counting from the time they first met, to the end of the book, it doesn't make 8 years but barely 4. The synopsis also reads "After his daring rescue sends them running for their lives through the wild, windswept hills..." and I wonder, when did this happen? The rescue occurred at the end of the book, not in the middle as the synopsis makes you think, and they never ran to any hills. It seems to me that the cover was designed and printed before the novel was written, and then the author changed her mind and wrote a completely different story.

Second, this book is a sequel to "The Highlander" which takes place in 1740 and maybe the beginning of 1741, and is the story of Jamie the Earl of Monleigh and Fraser's brother. However, when at the beginning of this book somewhere during the Spring or Summer of 1741 Claire's father asks Jamie if he is married yet or thinking of getting married, he responds that he is not married, that he is thinking about it but cant decide between all the lasses. That threw me off, since by that time he must have at the very least met Sophie and decided to marry her. Later in the book, Sophie magically appears as if the author had suddenly remembered her.

Another thing is that this novel does not seem to take into account the historic events of the time and place in which it develops. In 1745 a mayor uprising occurred in Scotland. I'm no expert, but I have read several other novels from this period that seem to have more consideration for history, and as I understand it, in 1745 the Highlanders rallied to Prince Charles Stuart and rose against the English in an attempt to put the Stuart king on the throne. The English crushed the rebellion and the Highland Clans suffered harsh reprisal for their participation in it. I would have thought that an event of this magnitude would at least be acknowledged in this book, but it isn't even mentioned.

The book ends abruptly. What was called the epilogue should have been the last chapter, then it needed a real epilogue to tell us what happened after Fraser rescued Claire, and what punishment was given to the villains of this story, Isobel and Lord Walter. I have rarely encountered characters so evil as these two, and was looking forward to the time when they would be punished for all their horrendous acts. To simply be told that they had been arrested and were going to be tried is not the end I had imagined for them. It is too easy and doesn't even begin to pay for all their murderous acts and cruelty. After all the suffering they caused and the violent scenes that were vividly described, I think the readers were cheated out of the satisfaction of seeing them receive their just punishment.

One think I did not particularly like, was that the characters were too young. When the book started Fraser was 19 and Claire 15. By the end they could not have been more than 25 and 20. It is not impossible to believe that a girl of only 16 years could assume and fulfill the responsibilities of an earldom, or that she could show such maturity, but it is difficult. It would have been more believable if they were a little older. But that is just my personal opinion.

All in all, I think the story had the potential to be a good one, if it had been properly developed and someone had taken the time to correct the errors. As it is, it appears that it was written in a hurry just to have something ready to meet a deadline.

By the way, I wonder what book did Harriet Klausner read, because judging by her review it certainly wasn't the same one I read. It makes me wonder about the helpful votes she received. Maybe there is another version of this book I know nothing about?

True Love over rides foolish pride
By billie dashnaw
This is one book I have read many times. The Hero of this book fell in Love with the Lady when she was very young. He had to wait for years for her to grow up to be able to marry her. The horrible murder of her Father and brothers, made her have to much responsibility for someone so young. The person who was responsible for the planning of the murder went before the court to gain guardianship for her and her two sisters. Being so sweet and kind until she gained the girls confidence, she plotted until she was able to ruin the relationship between the married couple. With him gone they started to torment the girls, they finally seen that her husband was right from the beginning. The misery the girls had to go through. How hard she worked to keep the clan running as it should. She tried hard to protect the clan and her sisters. Her pride stood in her way to ask for help from her husband, who she knew now was right. All the twists and turns it is a great read.

Full of Discrepancies
By Tawnya Lewis
I read the review of Thea and I agree whole-heartedly that the book was filled with discrepancies. When the book mentioned Fraser's brothers, Alexander (Arabella's twin) was left out of the book. In the Highlander, Arabella and Alexander were inseparable. Thea's review sums up the rest of the discreapancies quite accurately.
