From Publishers Weekly
With her fourth novel (after Secret Lives ), Chamberlain spins an absorbing tale of romantic obsession and betrayal. Beautiful artist Annie O'Neill is known as St. Anne on North Carolina's Outer Banks for her selfless devotion to any cause that comes down the pike--she's even donated bone marrow to a stranger in need. Her murder leaves her husband, Alec, shattered. Also broken are Olivia Simon, the emergency room physician who tried to save her, and the good doctor's husband, Paul, who idolized the victim. To recapture Paul's love, Olivia begins to emulate Annie in every way, from learning the craft of stained glass to being a good Samaritan. Readers will long to shake the physician, as lovesick Paul is not worth her efforts; this is a man who tells his wife that he can make love to her only if he pretends that she is Annie. As exasperating as these characters are (chief among them the dead goddess), the novel's cache of dark secrets and hidden passions keeps the pages turning. An old lighthouse keeper's climactic revelation adds a final surprise. BOMC alternate.

From Library Journal
At first blush this resembles nothing more than made-for-TV movie fare. On duty in the emergency room, Olivia Simon puts her career and marriage at risk as she tries to save the life of her husband's lover, Annie O'Neill. But Annie dies, Paul leaves, and Olivia--newly pregnant and under attack by the small Outer Banks community that loved artist and activist Annie--finds that her lifeline is a deepening relationship with Annie's widower Alec. Chamberlain ( Secret Lives , LJ 2/1/91) maintains a delicious tension in the Paul-or-Alec question and lifts this above the standard romance with well-rounded characters and deft plotting as she reveals the past, including secrets held by an aging lighthouse keeper, and who knew what when. Engrossing, satisfying entertainment. BOMC alternate.

From Kirkus Reviews
In spite of its bleak setting and gloomy undertones, this modern Middle-American potboiler featuring an emergency-room physician whose husband is obsessed with another man's wife engages the reader with its descriptive power and emotional intensity--by the author of Secret Lives (1991). The beautiful red-haired women's-shelter volunteer was already unconscious when brought into the emergency room on Christmas Day- -the unintended gunshot victim of someone else's angry husband. Only as cool, competent physician Olivia Simon is literally holding the woman's heart in her hand, plugging the bullet wounds with her fingers, does Olivia learn that the patient is Annie O'Neill, the woman with whom her husband, Paul, has been obsessed ever since their recent move to North Carolina's Outer Banks. When Annie dies on the operating table, Olivia must first inform the stunned husband, Alec, and the couple's two children, then go home to face her own husband's grief and wrath, knowing her innocent role in Annie's death will mean the end of her marriage. Once Paul moves out, Olivia's grief at the dissolution of her marriage gradually leads her into an obsession of her own with Annie O'Neill. Called ``Saint Anne'' by the locals, the charismatic wife and mother was well-known for donating bone marrow to children with cancer, fighting to preserve historical landmarks, caring for the elderly, and otherwise performing good deeds. But as Olivia becomes more deeply involved in Annie's life and family, she learns that neither Annie nor Paul were ever what they seemed. Will Olivia learn the truth behind Annie's apparent selflessness? Will Alec and his family survive Annie's death? Will Paul recognize the self- destructive nature of his obsession and return to his now-pregnant wife? Will Olivia and Alec find happiness--with or without their mates? Such questions--along with some particularly well-drawn local characters--keep the pages turning. -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

A Reread of a Favorite Book
By Nancy R. Katz
In 1992, while browsing at the library I came across the book Keeper of the Light by Diane Chamberlain. At the time Ms. Chamberlain was an author I wasn't familiar with but one I was soon to become acquainted with not only through her books but also through an early online book group. I also had the pleasure of meeting with Ms. Chamberlain in person on several occasions. I can still remember vividly how I felt after I read Keeper of the Light and how I felt when I realized that a certain screen name was for the author who wrote one of my favorite books. Now eleven years later I reread Keeper of the Light, something I seldom do, in anticipation of reading the second book in a trilogy Ms. Chamberlain wrote about the people and area known as Kiss River, located in the Outer Banks. And as I hope my thoughts on a second reading of Keeper of the Light was that this book was just as good as the second time and I would be happy to reread it again and again.
Keeper of the Light begins on the Outer Banks on a winter's night in the shadow of an old and grand lighthouse when a woman is brought into a hospital with a bullet wound. Dr. Olivia Cole, new to the area tends to the woman's wound but her injuries are too extensive and the woman dies. Only later does Olivia find out that this woman was Annie O'Neill a stained glass artist, known to the locals as Saint Annie for her many good deeds. What Olivia is soon to learn is that her husband Paul Macelli has a history with Annie which after her death will impact on not only Paul and Olivia's life but Annie's husband and children. While there are many secrets at Kiss River between these two families, the key to what happened many years before and continuing to Annie's death has been held by the lighthouse keeper Mary Poor who has been like a mother to Annie all of these years.
As I mentioned at the beginning of this review I seldom if ever reread a book for fear that I may not enjoy the book as much the second time. In this case I think I enjoyed this book a bit more than the first time which I never thought possible. And the best part is that now I can look forward to reading the second book in the trilogy, Kiss River, and revisit the Outer Banks and find our more about characters I feel as though are part of my family.

Keeper of the Light, Not a Keeper
By coalpuss
This was my first experience reading Diane Chamberlain and I enjoyed the vivid descriptions of the scenery, ocean, sea air, lighthouse, etc. There were many things to admire such as the character development. A woman and her husband move to the area, but the husband has kept his prior residence there a secret. Not a good start. The woman the husband knew in college lives in this place and he still loves her deeply. His 'obsession' breaks up his marriage. The other woman is known as Saint Annie since she does so much good for the people of this town and is also a talented artist. My reason for giving it only two stars is that (SPOILER Alert) the character of Annie is so deeply flawed as to be beyond belief. Yes, she had self esteem problems which began in her childhood, but so many positive events have occurred in her later life, I simply could not accept her behavior choices. She was not to be admired at all, and I shudder to understand how her husband could tell their daughter the true story of her mother's character or lack of it - which was to be postponed until the girl was older. Mmmmm, I would not want to warp that child. A conundrum to be sure.

Excellent! Spell binding. Great plot.

Reading Diane Chamberlain was a chance happening. "Keeper of the Light" was one of the few books that kept me changing my mind about how the story would turn out. I have read many books and really enjoy authors such as Dean Koontz, Stephen King, Phyllis Whitney, and Victoria Holtz; Diane Chamberlain is added to this list. I recommend this book to my 'reader' friends anytime I can. "Keeper of the Light" has been kept a secret too long. Buy it!!

Maya and Rebecca Ward are both accomplished physicians, but that's where the sisters' similarities end. As teenagers, they witnessed their parents' murder, but it was Rebecca who saved Maya from becoming another of the gunman's victims. The tragedy left Maya cautious and timid, settling for a sedate medical practice with her husband, Adam, while Rebecca became the risk taker.

After a devastating hurricane hits the coast of North Carolina, Rebecca and Adam urge Maya to join them in the relief effort. To please her husband, Maya finally agrees. She loses herself in the care and transport of victims, but when her helicopter crashes into raging floodwaters, there appear to be no survivors.

Forced to accept Maya is gone, Rebecca and Adam turn to one another—first for comfort, then in passion—unaware that, miles from civilization, Maya is injured and trapped with strangers she's not certain she can trust. Away from the sister who has always been there to save her, now Maya must find the courage to save herself—unaware that the life she knew has changed forever.

From Publishers Weekly
A hurricane's aftermath affects two sisters whose parents were murdered when they were teens in Chamberlain's (Secrets She Left Behind) murky melodrama. Maya is a frustrated pediatric orthopedist who continues to miscarry the babies her anesthesiologist husband Adam wants. Rebecca, Maya's single older sister, is a free spirit working for Doctors International Disaster Aid and has no interest in having children. After two devastating hurricanes hit North Carolina, Maya and Adam join Rebecca at the aid organization, then Maya goes missing after a helicopter crash. Adam and Rebecca console each other, believing Maya dead, but she's been rescued by creepy country hick Tully. Nursed back to health by Tully's pregnant common-law wife, Simmee, an angelic seventeen-year-old, and Lady Alice Harnett, an eccentric African-American, Maya sees her life about to change drastically. Chamberlain provides an interesting glimpse into how disaster relief works, but Maya's improbable backwoods adventure and its unlikely outcome lead to a feel-sort-of-good resolution that doesn't ring true. From Booklist
To the outside eye, sisters Maya and Rebecca Ward, successful doctors, are very similar. But their differences run deep and date back to their teen years, when they witnessed their parents' murders and Rebecca saved Maya from becoming the murderer's third victim. As adults, Maya has settled for a quiet and simple life, sharing a medical practice with her husband, Adam, while Rebecca is a thrill-seeker and risk-taker. When a terrible hurricane hits, all three join the relief effort, but Maya is seemingly lost when her rescue helicopter crashes. Her sister and husband must come to terms with her death, and do so by turning to each other for comfort, which soon becomes passionate. Little do they know that Maya is not dead, but lost, hurt, and among strangers. Chamberlain weaves an intensely engaging story of three people with a tragic past, complicated present, and unknown future who must struggle with trust, betrayal, and forgiveness. --Claire Orphan

Enjoyed the story - HATED the ending!!
By Jennifer MM
The Lies we Told is a good book, but I hated the ending. Maya and Rebecca Ward are sisters that went through a tragic past together and as they have grown older they couldn't be more different.

Rebecca is the one with no roots-the risk taker, she works for DIDA, a medical organization that travels to all the disasters in the world to provide medical care. Maya, her sister, who also happens to be a doctor, work in a hospital. Maya is married to Adam and they are desperate to have a baby. Maya has had many miscarriages and it is starting to take a toll on her marriage. Adam wants a bit of excitement too and has signed up to do a run with DIDA at least 2 weeks out of the year which frightens Rebecca to no end.

A terrible hurricane hits the coast of North Carolina and Adam and Rebecca are sent to help, but once there they realize that the situation is terrible and that they could use Maya's help. Maya is reluctant, but she thinks that she could help her marriage if she goes to the disaster sight to help out.

The author does a fabulous job and setting the scene. The reader has a very clear picture of the disaster and of the relief efforts at the airport and the descriptions of the people are heartbreaking. After a few days Maya is sent with one of the helicopters and it crashes.

For me this is where they book turned for me. Maya is fighting for her life, upset that her husband and sister might think she is dead and what are Rebecca and Adam doing...fighting their attraction to each other, WHAT??? For me it was ridiculous. Adam and Maya were supposed to love each other a great deal and the bond between Rebecca and Maya was one forged by tragic circumstances, BUT that doesn't stop Rebecca and Adam from being pulled together????? I won't say anything else on the subject as I don't want to give away all the little details, but at this point, I could NOT like the characters of Rebecca and Adam. It just didn't seem to fit with the story. AND the ending....hated it....let's just wrap it up in a pretty little bow?!? It seemed to easy and too insane to end the book that way.

I like this author and I will continue to read her books, but I have to say that this one was not my favorite....great idea, great start, and then she lost me.

Seriously?!
By Voracious reader
You have two sisters who have survived the murders of their parents as teens. The two sisters have responded in completely different manners. Rebecca - constantly puts herself in danger as she volunteers as a dr in disaster zones, while her younger sister, Maya, also a dr, chose a more sedate career as a pediatrician. Things change when Maya joins her husband as well as her sister in an area hit hard by 2 hurricanes.

****Spoilers***
Up until the helicopter crash, the characters were somewhat believable: Maya and Adam grieving over their difficulties in conceiving and then staying pregnant with Adam discovering that maybe Maya's abortion she had as a teen could be the cause. Rebecca is becoming disenchanted with her lifestyle, boyfriend, and wanting more. Then, Maya's helicopter crashes. All of a sudden Adam and Rebecca who are grieving, are hot for each other and fighting their attraction to one another. Cue the banjos - Maya's trapped in Deliverance. She's on this isolated island in the south with an abusive, crazy, white man, his pregnant, teen common law wife, and an elderly black woman. In a series of events Maya escapes the island with Simmee and her baby, while being shot at by the crazy man. It cures Maya of all her fears/PTSD tied to her parents' murders. Seriously?!! And the ending, PLEASE! Somehow, Adam and Rebecca end up together. They have no chemistry; the whole 'I can't keep my mind off of you' thing they had while Maya was missing - completely unbelievable. The thing is, is that Chamberlain CONSTANTLY tells the reader how Adam feels about Maya. It's obvious that he loves her. You see it the way he talks about her and treats her. For him to suddenly transfer his affection to Rebecca, just doesn't feel right. Rebecca, who loves her sister dearly, wouldn't hook up with her sister's husband. It's implausible. It's really quite too bad that it ended this way because I can see how this experience would have made Maya and Adam's love for each other stronger.

No lie...this is a good read!
By Denise Crawford
Disclaimer: this book would have earned a 5-star rating from me had it not ended the way it did. I won't spoil it for anyone, but I thought that the resolution of the conflict and the way the story wrapped up was just not realistic in light of how I had viewed the characters, their personalities, and their motivations throughout the course of the novel.

Maya and Rebecca -- sisters, friends, doctors -- have a special bond that was created in the aftermath of the murder of their parents when both were teenagers. Wild and free-spirited older sister Rebecca takes on the burden of caring for and raising 14-year-old Maya when she is barely 18. Both go on to medical school and have very different lives as adult women. Maya is the quiet one; she's married to a fellow doctor named Adam, and they long for children. After suffering through a series of miscarriages, their marriage is faltering. Rebecca is deeply involved with a relief organization known as DIDA (Doctors International Disaster Aid) and lives her days ricocheting from tragedy to disaster all over the world. The sisters are very close and supportive of each other, all the while continuing to live in ways that support their self-created myth that Maya is the weak one and Rebecca is the strong one. The lies they tell each other, and the ones they hold in their hearts, are roiling beneath the surface calm of their lives.

After a third miscarriage, Maya is disconsolate. Adam is distant and shattered by a revelation that Maya makes in the doctor's office. When a hurricane hits the North Carolina coast, he signs on immediately and joins Rebecca at a makeshift airport infirmary where they are inundated with more sick and injured than they can handle. Both urge Maya to come help in the relief efforts, and against all odds, she shows up! Unfortunately, while on a transport mission, the helicopter that she is riding in crashes into a flood zone and there is no sign of her at the site.

Believing Maya dead, Rebecca and Adam become closer than ever in their shared grief. But something changes between them. Meanwhile, the injured Maya is held on a piece of land that is surrounded by water, with no way off the island, and a fear that her rescuers might not have her best intentions at heart.

The sisters learn more about themselves and then the pieces of their shared history begin to unravel as each starts a journey of self discovery. Rebecca and Maya will never be the same.

I thought the book was great until the last couple of chapters. I liked the character of Maya much more so than the persona of Rebecca -- for various reasons. I don't feel that the pat ending that the author wrote (and by the way she is one of my favorite authors) rang true and it really irritated me. I'd be interested to hear if other readers felt it was too contrived and unbelievable to them as well.

In any event, if you can get past the ending, you'll enjoy the book. I'd still recommend it.

Check it out carefully
By A. M. Ponzo
I am a big fan of Stephanie Laurens and eagerly await her new books. I was very pleased to see this one on the shelf. Unfortunately when I got it home I saw that it was published by Mira (aka Harlequine). This is usually a clue that it is a reissue of an old book. I checked the copy write date and this book was originally issued in 1995. If you have not read it before it's worth a read. Not up to the standards of her Cynster novels or the Bastion Club but okay. Her style has matured since this book was written. If you have been reading Ms. Laurens' books for a while you should make sure you have not already read this one. I believe this particular book has been reissued more than once. It was enjoyable but not really a keeper. I will now have to return to the bookstore and wait for Stephanie's next New book.

Simmering Sensuality - Superb Character Development 3-1/2*
By M. Rondeau
The story was simple. Reputed rake Jack Lester was ready to settle down. Not wanting to broadcast his good fortune and financial windfall, mainly in order to keep the ton's matrons at bay, he wanted to discover a woman who would love him for himself, while thinking him poor as a church mouse. Naturally, he finds his ideal mate, Sophie Winterton - perfect in every way. So perfect, in fact, that even though Sophie loves him, when she's told he needs money to refurbish his estate she does her best to dissuade and refuse his suit. Unselfishly thinking that he can find and marry the heiress `she determines' he needs to shore up his estates. The plot goes on the way of traditional regencies with a full complement of supporting and engaging secondary characters and romances in a predictable manner. No big surprise here. Yet, even in this earlier effort, Laurens expertise in character development shines in giving you a totally loveable cast of lead characters.

*** I knew when I picked this up that it was a reprint of an earlier work and that it would be more indicative of the traditional regency read with more emphasis on the conduct and wooing practices of that period. In this I was not disappointed. Naturally, fans of the very successful Cynster and Bastion Club series will probably miss the highly charged sensuality that Laurens newer work provides but while I missed the sensuality, I delighted in the clever dialogs and the way she created the character of Jack Lester. Written without the seductive sensual scenes she is so very capable of, Laurens still imbued our hero Jack with an undeniable air of superiority and strength that I could only think she would ultimately use to be her model for Devil Cynster in her later novels. Jack was an alpha male so utterly commanding and with such simmering sensuality that you want to see him ravish the heroine yet, he's always marvelously in control, drop dead gorgeous, and ultimately lethal - in other words, a total turn on! Naturally, to each his own - but for me I only see him as totally divine! Some say this was boring, but for those looking for the truly traditional regency read will enjoy it. --- Marilyn, for [...] ---

good stephanie laurens, not best
By karen greenstein
I have always enjoyed Stephie Laurens. Her historical and romantic descriptions are excellent as are her characters and plot. While this may not be her best, it was still a good read and I enjoyed it. I am interested in the rules and mores of the time, and this book encompasses these. Karen Greenstein

Mel squinted into the rain and darkness, creeping along the narrow, twisting, muddy, treeenshrouded road, and for the hundredth time thought, Am I out of my mind? And then she heard and felt a thump as the right rear wheel of her BMW slipped off the road onto the shoulder and sank into the mud. The car rocked to a stop. She accelerated and heard the wheel spin but she was going nowhere fast.

I am so screwed, was her next thought.

She turned on the dome light and looked at her cell phone. She'd lost the signal an hour ago when she left the freeway and headed up into the mountains. In fact, she'd been having a pretty lively discussion with her sister Joey when the steep hills and unbelievably tall trees blocked the signal and cut them off.

"I cannot believe you're really doing this," Joey was saying. "I thought you'd come to your senses. This isn't you, Mel! You're not a small-town girl!"

"Yeah? Well, it looks like I'm gonna be—I took the job and sold everything, so I wouldn't be tempted to go back."

"You couldn't just take a leave of absence? Maybe go to a small, private hospital? Try to think this through?"

"I need everything to be different," Mel said. "No more hospital war zone. I'm just guessing, but I imagine I won't be called on to deliver a lot of crack babies out here in the woods. The woman said this place, this Virgin River, is calm and quiet and safe."

"And stuck back in the forest, a million miles from a Starbucks, where you'll get paid in eggs and pig's feet and—"

"And none of my patients will be brought in handcuffed, guarded by a corrections officer." Then Mel took a breath and, unexpectedly, laughed and said, "Pig's feet? Oh-oh, Joey—I'm going up into the trees again, I might lose you…"

"You wait. You'll be sorry. You'll regret this. This is crazy and impetuous and—"

That's when the signal, blessedly, was lost. And Joey was right—with every additional mile, Mel was doubting herself and her decision to escape into the country.

At every curve the roads had become narrower and the rain a little harder. It was only 6:00 p.m., but it was already dark as pitch; the trees were so dense and tall that even that last bit of afternoon sun had been blocked. Of course there were no lights of any kind along this winding stretch. According to the directions, she should be getting close to the house where she was to meet her new employer, but she didn't dare get out of her swamped car and walk. She could get lost in these woods and never be seen again.

Instead, she fished the pictures from her briefcase in an attempt to remind herself of a few of the reasons why she had taken this job. She had pictures of a quaint little hamlet of clapboard houses with front porches and dormer windows, an old-fashioned schoolhouse, a stee-pled church, hollyhocks, rhododendrons and blossoming apple trees in full glory, not to mention the green pastures upon which livestock grazed. There was the pie and coffee shop, the corner store, a tiny one-room, freestanding library, and the adorable little cabin in the woods that would be hers, rent free, for the year of her contract.

The town backed up to the amazing sequoia redwoods and national forests that spanned hundreds of miles of wilderness over the Trinity and Shasta mountain ranges. The Virgin River, after which the town was named, was deep, wide, long, and home to huge salmon, sturgeon, steel fish and trout. She'd looked on the internet at pictures of that part of the world and was easily convinced no more beautiful land existed. Of course, she could see nothing now except rain, mud and darkness.

Ready to get out of Los Angeles, she had put her resume with the Nurses' Registry and one of the recruiters brought Virgin River to her attention. The town doctor, she said, was getting old and needed help. A woman from the town, Hope McCrea, was donating the cabin and the first year's salary. The county was picking up the tab for liability insurance for at least a year to get a practitioner and midwife in this remote, rural part of the world. "I faxed Mrs. McCrea your resume and letters of recommendation," the recruiter had said, "and she wants you. Maybe you should go up there and look the place over."

Mel took Mrs. McCrea's phone number and called her that evening. Virgin River was far smaller than what she'd had in mind, but after no more than an hour-long conversation with Mrs. McCrea, Mel began effecting her move out of L.A. the very next morning. That was barely two weeks ago.

What they didn't know at the Registry, nor in Virgin River for that matter, was that Mel had become desperate to get away. Far away. She'd been dreaming of a fresh start, and peace and quiet, for months. She couldn't remember the last time she'd had a restful night's sleep. The dangers of the big city, where crime seemed to be overrunning the neighborhoods, had begun to consume her. Just going to the bank and the store filled her with anxiety; danger seemed to be lurking everywhere. Her work in the three-thousand-bed county hospital and trauma center brought to her care the victims of too many crimes, not to mention the perpetrators of crimes hurt in pursuit or arrest—strapped to hospital beds in wards and in Emergency, guarded by cops. What was left of her spirit was hurting and wounded. And that was nothing to the loneliness of her empty bed.

Her friends begged her to stave off this impulse to run for some unknown small town, but she'd been in grief group, individual counseling and had seen more of the inside of a church in the last nine months than she had in the last ten years, and none of that was helping. The only thing that gave her any peace of mind was fantasizing about running away to some tiny place in the country where people didn't have to lock their doors, and the only thing you had to fear were the deer getting in the vegetable garden. It seemed like sheer heaven.

But now, sitting in her car looking at the pictures by the dome light, she realized how ridiculous she'd been. Mrs. McCrea told her to pack only durable clothes—jeans and boots—for country medicine. So what had she packed? Her boots were Stuart Weitzmans, Cole Haans and Fryes—and she hadn't minded paying over a tidy four-fifty for each pair. The jeans she had packed for traipsing out to the ranches and farms were Rock & Republics, Joe's, Luckys, 7 For All Mankind—they rang up between one-fifty and two-fifty a copy. She'd been paying three hundred bucks a pop to have her hair trimmed and highlighted. After scrimping for years through college and post-grad nursing, once she was a nurse practitioner with a very good salary she discovered she loved nice things. She might have spent most of her workday in scrubs, but when she was out of them, she liked looking good.

She was sure the fish and deer would be very impressed.

In the past half hour she'd only seen one old truck on the road. Mrs. McCrea hadn't prepared her for how perilous and steep these roads were, filled with hairpin turns and sharp drop-offs, so narrow in some places that it would be a challenge for two cars to pass each other. She was almost relieved when the dark consumed her, for she could at least see approaching headlights around each tight turn. Her car had sunk into the shoulder on the side of the road that was up against the hill and not the ledge where there were no guardrails. Here she sat, lost in the woods and doomed. With a sigh, she turned around and pulled her heavy coat from the top of one of the boxes on the backseat. She hoped Mrs. McCrea would be traversing this road either en route to or from the house where they were to meet. Otherwise, she would probably be spending the night in the car. She still had a couple of apples, some crackers and two cheese rounds in wax. But the damn Diet Coke was gone—she'd have the shakes and a headache by morning from caffeine withdrawal.

No Starbucks. She should have done a better job of stocking up.

She turned off the engine, but left the lights on in case a car came along the narrow road. If she wasn't rescued, the battery would be dead by morning. She settled back and closed her eyes. A very familiar face drifted into her mind: Mark. Sometimes the longing to see him one more time, to talk to him for just a little while was overwhelming. Forget the grief—she just missed him—missed having a partner to depend on, to wait up for, to wake up beside. An argument over his long hours even seemed appealing. He told her once, "This—you and me—this is forever."

Forever lasted four years. She was only thirty-two and from now on she would be alone. He was dead. And she was dead inside.

A sharp tapping on the car window got her attention and she had no idea if she'd actually been asleep or just musing. It was the butt of a flashlight that had made the noise and holding it was an old man. The scowl on his face was so jarring that she thought the end she feared might be upon her.

"Missy," he was saying. "Missy, you're stuck in the mud."

She lowered her window and the mist wet her face. "I.I know. I hit a soft shoulder."

"That piece of crap won't do you much good around here," he said.

Piece of crap indeed! It was a new BMW convertible, one of her many attempts to ease the ache of loneliness. "Well, no one told me that! But thank you very much for the insight."

His thin white hair was plastered to his head and his bushy white eyebrows shot upwards in spikes; the rain glistened on his jacket and dripped off his big nose. "Sit tight, I'll hook the chain around your bumper and pull you out. You going to the McCrea house?"

Well, that's what she'd been after—a place where everyone knows everyone else. She wanted to warn him not to scratch the bumper but all she could do was stammer, "Y-yes."

"It ain't far. You can follow me after I pull you out."

"Thanks," she said.

So, she would have a bed after all. And if Mrs. Mc-Crea had a heart, there would be something to eat and drink. She began to envision the glowing fire in the cottage with the sound of spattering rain on the roof as she hunkered down into a deep, soft bed with lovely linens and quilts wrapped around her. Safe. Secure. At last.

Her car groaned and strained and finally lurched out of the ditch and onto the road. The old man pulled her several feet until she was on solid ground, then he stopped to remove the chain. He tossed it into the back of the truck and motioned for her to follow him. No argument there—if she got stuck again, he'd be right there to pull her out. Along she went, right behind him, using lots of window cleaner with her wipers to keep the mud he splattered from completely obscuring her vision.

In less than five minutes, the blinker on the truck was flashing and she followed him as he made a right turn at a mailbox. The drive was short and bumpy, the road full of potholes, but it quickly opened up into a clearing. The truck made a wide circle in the clearing so he could leave again, which left Mel to pull right up to…a hovel!

This was no adorable little cottage. It was an A-frame with a porch all right, but it looked as though the porch was only attached on one side while the other end had broken away and listed downward. The shingles were black with rain and age and there was a board nailed over one of the windows. It was not lit within or without; there was no friendly curl of smoke coming from the chimney.

The pictures were lying on the seat beside her. She blasted on her horn and jumped immediately out of the car, clutching the pictures and pulling the hood of her wool jacket over her head. She ran to the truck. He rolled down his window and looked at her as if she had a screw loose. "Are you sure this is the McCrea cottage?"

"Yup."

She showed him the picture of the cute little A-frame cottage with Adirondack chairs on the porch and hanging pots filled with colorful flowers decorating the front of the house. It was bathed in sunlight in the picture.

"Hmm," he said. "Been a while since she looked like that."

"I wasn't told that. She said I could have the house rent free for a year, plus salary. I'm supposed to help out the doctor in this town. But this—?"

"Didn't know the doc needed help. He didn't hire you, did he?" he asked.

"No. I was told he was getting too old to keep up with the demands of the town and they needed another doctor, but that I'd do for a year or so."

"Do what?"

She raised her voice to be heard above the rain. "I'm a nurse practitioner. And certified nurse midwife."

That seemed to amuse him. "That a fact?"

"You know the doctor?" she asked.

"Everybody knows everybody. Seems like you shoulda come up here and look the place over and meet the doc before making up your mind."

"Yeah, seems like," she said in some self-recrimination. "Let me get my purse—give you some money for pulling me out of the—" But he was already waving her off.

"Don't want your money. People up here don't have money to be throwing around for neighborly help. So," he said with humor, lifting one of those wild white eyebrows, "looks like she got one over on you. That place's been empty for years now." He chuckled. "Rent free! Hah!"

Headlights bounced into the clearing as an old Suburban came up the drive. Once it arrived the old man said, "There she is. Good luck." And then he laughed. Actually, he cackled as he drove out of the clearing.

An amazing story of love and courage
By cmiller
Mel Monroe came to Virgin River to escape. As a nurse and midwife, Mel has high expectations when she leaves L.A. Arriving on a stormy night, Virgin River is what she least expects. The cabin promised to her, rent free for a year, is a dump. The town doctor whom she was told was in desperate need of help wants nothing to do with her. Determined to leave the following day, Mel feels dejected and is unsure of where to go from there.

Jack Sheridan, owner of the only bar in Virgin River feels an immediate attraction to Mel. Seeing her sad eyes, Jack feels an almost compelling need to take care of her. For Jack, that is something that has never happened to him before. When Mel finds a baby on the doorstep the day she leaves, she knows that she can't leave quite yet. Before long, Jack finds himself falling in love with a woman who is determined to leave.

This is an emotion packed book that will make you laugh and make you cry. Mel's plight comes right off the pages and you can't help but love her. Her confusion over her feelings for Jack tear her (and will tear the reader) in two. Jack and Mel come together, two people who never expected to find what they found. Jack never thought he could feel a permanent attachment to a woman. Mel didn't think that she could ever love again after losing her husband. The secondary characters enrich the story. Virgin River is a town the reader can't help but love and will want to return to again and again.

Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.- Maria Robinson

Nurse Practitioner and Midwife, Mel Monroe, leaves the fast pace of Los Angeles hospitals and crime behind. Widowed 9 months ago, she can't face the pitying looks of her colleagues anymore and feels she needs a drastic change in order to heal.

Accepting an offer as an assistant to a Doctor in a picturesque little town in the mountains, she sells her house and most of everything in it, packs a few clothing items and heads to Virgin River.

When Mel arrives, she finds that the pictures she was sent are not quite representative of the town or her house as it looks today. Stepping out of her element was difficult for her and to arrive to find her house in such horrible condition only makes Mel realize she has made a huge mistake. She stays the night with the intention of heading out the very next morning. But when she discovers a baby abandoned on a doorstep, she decides to stay a little longer.

When town bar/restaurant owner, Jack, fixes up her place, she decides to stay even longer. Jack becomes her best friend and she starts feeling things for him she never thought she'd feel again.

I dove into this book with gusto after an Amazon friend recommended it so highly. She was right, it is great and I am rushing to finish this review so I can hurry and order book two, Shelter Mountain (Virgin River Trilogy, Book 2). This would easily have been a 5 star book to me as the characters are colorful and wonderful, the setting unique and beautiful, and the storyline engaging and fun. I would have rated it 5 stars had it not been for some very awkward dialogue and a scene at the end that was way too over the top for me.

The side characters are just as interesting as the main ones and I can't wait to read more about this mountain town. There is so much going on with Mel and we get to watch her resolve her past, live in the present, and make steps towards a promising future. Touching and entertaining. Enjoy.

I Just Couldn't See The Maigc
By Amazon Customer
*sigh* I feel like the grump lurking in the corner, but I did not like this book. Which is shocking! This book has an extremely high average and every Goodreads friend I have to date has given it at least a 4 star grade. It must have something going for it to have so many fans, but I just can't see it. :\

This was supposed to be a modern book, but it felt oddly dated. The heroine Mel, talks about Starbucks and $300 highlights so I know it's modern, but it also had a weirdly old school vibe going for it. Maybe it's the small town vibe the author wanted to portray? The hero--who was in the marines and came from California--says stuff like "fanny" and has the good ol' boy vibe going for him. It just felt like some odd time warp. It was like picking up Mackenzie's Mountain again.

Before I get into the characters and the plot I have to admit that this author's writing style annoyed me. She is a very big 'teller' instead of a 'shower.' She has a very distancing technique that made it hard for me to care about her characters. Third person past tense is my favorite style to read, but here the author killed it. There was no sense of immersion into the characters. Even though I was reading from Mel's point of view I never felt like I was reading about how her character would really think. The author had a very heavy hand in the narration and that's just not my preferred style.

One of my biggest complaints about small town stories are the wacky townspeople and zany situations they get into. I would have killed for some of that here. These people were incredibly bland to read about. They had nothing to make them unique or interesting so they all kind of blurred together. I know they were just background characters, but Mel interacted with them enough that they should have had some development going on. Just something to change the 'voice' of the characters so they actually felt different from each other!

For the most part I felt bored by the book. I kept going with it because so many of my friends liked it. I was determined to discover the magic. Then I was too far along to not finish it. I made myself continue because I knew if I set the book down there was a very large chance that I would never pick it up again. It wasn't that it was so bad that it made me hate it, I was just bored. I found the story bland and tedious to read. I have never been so aware of a page count in my life.

But I did eventually get irritated. Mel was a hard character for me to like. I thought her grief was well done--not too melodramatic, very compelling for its simplicity--but there should have been more time before she started a relationship. Up until 50 pages from the end Mel still considered herself someone else's wife. I can understand, but it did not make for a good romance. I felt really bad for Jack. She was honest with him from the start about having nothing to give him, but he was willing to accept the crumbs. They made good friends, but I didn't feel a connection on Mel's part beyond being a welcome physical release. Jack was the quintessential 'friends with benefits' relationship. Poor guy should have wised up and hooked up with someone who actually wanted to be with him.

Mel didn't make me irritated until closer to the end. In the beginning her narrative was sort of preachy about the beauty of childbirth and also about her anti-gun stance. But I just rolled my eyes and moved on. But then she turned into an idiot!!!

***SPOILER***
***SPOILER***
***SPOILER***
***SPOILER***

She is a MIDWIFE and NURSE and she had sex multiple times without a condom. It wouldn't have been so glaring if it weren't for her job and the fact that such a big deal was made out of getting a 16 year old boy to use condoms with his girlfriend. What kind of retard doesn't practice what they preach???

After having sex multiple times the hero and heroine finally discuss protection methods and the possibility of STD's. Oh sure, it's a lot of help after the fact! Also, Jack volunteers to have a blood test to prove he's clean but Mel doesn't have one too. That's incredibly stupid. Just because someone only has one partner for years, it doesn't mean they can't have an STD too. Also, when Jack gives Mel the results she won't read them because she "trusts" him. What exactly was the point of making him have the test if she wasn't even going to look at them?

I started getting a bad vibe about the blatant condomless sex and it turned out to be right. Mel and her husband tried and tried to have a baby and couldn't. But one time with Jack and she's knocked up? Oh, please. I am tired of that stupid trope. Plus, I honestly don't think she would have ever really forced herself to connect with Jack if it wasn't for the baby. That's just sad for him.

Because of these issues I don't think I'll continue with the series. If it had just been the characters or plot I would have tried again, but since I don't like her writing style I don't see me having different results with another book. Too bad too, because I was pretty curious about Preacher.

Dianne Williams had the scenario all worked out. She'd be pushing her grocery cart down the aisle of the local grocery store and gazing over the frozen-food section when a tall, dark, handsome man would casually stroll up to her and with a brilliant smile say, "Those low-cal dinners couldn't possibly be for you."

She'd turn to him and suddenly the air would fill with the sounds of a Rimsky-Korsakov symphony, or bells would chime gently in the distance—Dianne didn't have that part completely figured out yet—and in that instant she would know deep in her heart that this was the man she was meant to spend the rest of her life with.

All right, Dianne was willing to admit, the scenario was childish and silly, the kind of fantasy only a teenage girl should dream up. But reentering the dating scene after umpteen years of married life created problems Dianne didn't even want to consider.

Three years earlier, Dianne's husband had left her and the children to find himself. Instead he found a SYT (sweet young thing), promptly divorced Dianne and moved across the country. It hurt; in fact, it hurt more than anything Dianne had ever known, but she was a survivor, and always had been. Perhaps that was the reason Jack didn't seem to suffer a single pang of guilt about abandoning her to raise Jason and Jill on her own.

Her children, Dianne had discovered, were incredibly resilient. Within a year of their father's departure, they were urging her to date. Their father did, they reminded Dianne with annoying frequency. And if it wasn't her children pushing her toward establishing a new relationship, it was her own dear mother.

When it came to locating Mr. Right for her divorced daughter, Martha Janes knew no equal. For several months, Dianne had been subjected to a long parade of single men. Their unmarried status, however, seemed their sole attribute.

After dinner with the man who lost his toupee on a low-hanging chandelier, Dianne had insisted enough was enough and she would find her own dates.

This proved to be easier said than done. Dianne hadn't gone out once in six months. Now, within the next week, she needed a man. Not just any man, either. One who was tall, dark and handsome. It would be a nice bonus if he was exceptionally wealthy, too, but she didn't have time to be choosy. The Valentine's dinner at the Port Blossom Community Center was Saturday night. This Saturday night.

From the moment the notice was posted six weeks earlier, Jason and Jill had insisted she attend. Surely their mother could find a date given that much time! And someone handsome to boot. It seemed a matter of family honor.

Only now the dinner was only days away and Dianne was no closer to achieving her goal.

"I'm home," Jason yelled as he walked into the house. The front door slammed in his wake, hard enough to shake the kitchen windows. He threw his books on the counter, moved directly to the refrigerator, opened the door and stuck the upper half of his fourteen-year-old body inside.

"Help yourself to a snack," Dianne said, smiling and shaking her head.

Jason reappeared with a chicken leg clenched between his teeth like a pirate's cutlass. One hand was filled with a piece of leftover cherry pie while the other held a platter of cold fried chicken.

"How was school?"

He shrugged, set down the pie and removed the chicken leg from his mouth. "Okay, I guess."

Dianne knew what was coming next. It was the same question he'd asked her every afternoon since the notice about the dinner had been posted. "Do you have a date yet?" He leaned against the counter as his steady gaze pierced her. Her son's eyes could break through the firmest resolve, and cut through layers of deception.

"No date," she answered cheerfully. At least as cheerfully as she could under the circumstances.

"The dinner's this Saturday night."

As if she needed reminding. "I know. Stop worrying, I'll find someone."

"Not just anyone," Jason said emphatically, as though he were speaking to someone with impaired hearing. "He's got to make an impression. Someone decent."

"I know, I know."

"Grandma said she could line you up with—"

"No," Dianne interrupted. "I categorically refuse to go on any more of Grandma's blind dates."

"But you don't have the time to find your own now. It's—"

"I'm working on it," she insisted, although she knew she wasn't working very hard. She was trying to find someone to accompany her to the dinner, only she'd never dreamed it would be this difficult.

Until the necessity of attending this affair had been forced upon her, Dianne hadn't been aware of how limited her choices were. In the past couple of years, she'd met few single men, apart from the ones her mother had thrown at her. There were a couple of unmarried men at the office where she was employed part-time as a bookkeeper. Neither, however, was anyone she'd seriously consider dating. They were both too suave, too urbane—too much like Jack. Besides, problems might arise if she were to mingle her social life with her business one.

The front door opened and closed again, a little less noisily this time.

"I'm home!" ten-year-old Jill announced from the entryway. She dropped her books on the f loor and marched toward the kitchen. Then she paused on the threshold and planted both hands on her hips as her eyes sought out her brother. "You better not have eaten all the leftover pie. I want some too, you know."

"Don't grow warts worrying about it," Jason said sarcastically. "There's plenty."

Jill's gaze swiveled from her brother to her mother. The level of severity didn't diminish one bit. Dianne met her daughter's eye and mouthed the words along with her.

"Do you have a date yet?"

Jason answered for Dianne. "No, she doesn't. And she's got five days to come up with a decent guy and all she says is that she's working on it."

"Mom..." Jill's brown eyes filled with concern.

"Children, please."

"Everyone in town's going," Jill claimed as if Dianne wasn't already aware of that. "You've got to be there, you've just got to. I told all my friends you're going."

More pressure! That was the last thing Dianne needed. Nevertheless, she smiled serenely at her two children and assured them they didn't have a thing to worry about.

An hour or so later, while she was making dinner, she could hear Jason and Jill's voices in the living room. They were huddled together in front of the television, their heads close together. Plotting, it looked like, charting her barren love life. Doubtless deciding who their mother should take to the dinner. Probably the guy with the toupee.

"Is something wrong?" Dianne asked, standing in the doorway. It was unusual for them to watch television this time of day, but more unusual for them to be so chummy. The fact that they'd turned on the TV to drown out their conversation hadn't escaped her.

They broke guiltily apart. "Wrong?" Jason asked, recovering first. "I was just talking to Jill, is all. Do you need me to do something?"

That offer alone was enough evidence to convict them both. "Jill, would you set the table for me?" she asked, her gaze lingering on her two children for another moment before she returned to the kitchen.

Jason and Jill were up to something. Dianne could only guess what. No doubt the plot they were concocting included their grandmother.

Sure enough, while Jill was setting the silverware on the kitchen table, Jason used the phone, stretching the cord as far as it would go and mumbling into the mouthpiece so there was no chance Dianne could overhear his conversation.

Dianne's suspicions were confirmed when her mother arrived shortly after dinner. And within minutes, Jason and Jill had deserted the kitchen, saying they had to get to their homework. Also highly suspicious behavior.

"Do you want some tea, Mom?" Dianne felt obliged to ask, dreading the coming conversation. It didn't take Sherlock Holmes to deduce that her children had called their grandmother hoping she'd find a last-minute date for Dianne.

"Don't go to any trouble."

This was her mother's standard reply. "It's no trouble," Dianne said.

"Then make the tea."

Because of her evening aerobics class—W.A.R. it was called, for Women After Results—Dianne had changed and was prepared to make a hasty exit.

While the water was heating, she took a white ceramic teapot from the cupboard. "Before you ask, and I know you will," she said with strained patience, "I haven't got a date for the Valentine's dinner yet."

Her mother nodded slowly as if Dianne had just announced something of profound importance. Martha was from the old school, and she took her time getting around to whatever was on her mind, usually preceding it with a long list of questions that hinted at the subject. Dianne loved her mother, but there wasn't anyone on this earth who could drive her crazier.

"You've still got your figure," Martha said, her expression serious. "That helps." She stroked her chin a couple of times and nodded. "You've got your father's brown eyes, may he rest in peace, and your hair is nice and thick. You can thank your grandfather for that. He had hair so thick—"

"Ma, did I mention I have an aerobics class tonight?"

Her mother's posture stiffened. "I don't want to bother you."

"It's just that I might have to leave before you say what you're obviously planning to say, and I didn't want to miss the reason for your unexpected visit."

Her mother relaxed, but just a little. "Don't worry. I'll say what must be said and then you can leave. Your mother's words are not as important as your exercise class."

An argument bubbled up like fizz from a can of soda, but Dianne successfully managed to swallow it. Showing any sign of weakness in front of her mother was a major tactical error. Dianne made the tea, then carried the pot over to the table and sat across from Martha.

Lots of Fun
By drebbles
"Be My Valentine" consists of two previously published works by Debbie Macomber: "My Funny Valentine" first published in 1991 and "My Hero" first published in 1992.

In "My Funny Valentine", pushed by her mother and two children, divorcee Dianne Williams is desperate to find a date for the upcoming Valentine's Day dinner. So desperate, in fact, that when she locks her keys in her car and tow truck driver Steve Creighton comes to her rescue, she offers to pay him to escort her to the dinner. Little does she realize that that chance encounter will change her live forever.

"My Funny Valentine" is a very cute if short (a little over 100 pages) story. I pretty much smiled from beginning to end while reading it and wished it were longer. The set up is very cute, if unbelievable. Both lead characters are well done and Steve is a very romantic leading man. None of the story is meant to be taken seriously (Dianne's two children are too good to be true) but is at times laugh out loud funny (especially in the scenes where Steve tries to act besotted). "My Funny Valentine" is a cotton candy type of story, which is okay when you want to escape the real world.

In "My Hero", after two failed engagements, Bailey York has sworn off real life romance and decides to write a romance novel instead. However, the hero in her book feels a bit flat and she decides to look for a real life model - for writing purposes only. When she bumps into Parker Davidson she realizes he'd be the perfect model for her hero. Unfortunately for her peace of mind, he wants to be a hero on and off the page.

"My Hero" is a nicely done romance novel. Bailey is a fun heroine - owned by a cat that only cares when she feeds her and down with romance (except when writing about it). Her friend Jan is also a good character - happily married, she is still a romantic at heart. Parker is also a lot of fun, disbelieving at first, but soon falling in with Bailey's plan and in love with her. Macomber has a lot of fun with the concept of Bailey writing a romance novel and it's fun to read as Bailey's fictional romance turns into a real one.

"Be My Valentine" features two cute romances that will make readers smile.

Light, clean romance
By J. Baker
Be My Valentine is comprised of two Valentine's inspired novellas. The first, My Funny Valentine, is about a divorced woman that is being pushed into dating by her mother and her two children. She promises them that she will find her own date for the community Valentine's Day dinner, but mere days before the dinner, she is still dateless. Fueled by desperation, she offers to pay a handsome tow truck driver to take her to the dinner. It doesn't take long for her to start wondering what she got herself into.

The second story, My Hero, is about a budding romance novelist trying to find someone to model the male lead in her manuscript after. She finds what she considers to be the perfect specimen on the subway one morning and decides to follow him as research for her book. What comes out of her research ends up changing both of their lives forever.

I don't typically read romance novels. Every time I do, it only seems to make my own relationship pale in comparison. That's kind of sad since I really do have a good husband. So for his sake and the sake of my sanity, I usually skip the romances. I did find this book to be a quick, easy read and overall, I enjoyed it. Both stories were very clean but unrealistic. I'm off now to compare my husband to Parker and sulk for awhile when I discover there's no comparison.

Carlotta Wren bumped her cast against the door frame leading from the kitchen to the living room. "Son of a…" She bit back tears as pain lit up her entire left arm. Although she was lucky the fall from the balcony of the Fox Theater hadn't resulted in more serious physical injuries, the prospect of another four weeks in this clumsy cast left her frustrated and antsy.

It wasn't enough that she couldn't do her job at Neiman Marcus at a time when she desperately needed the money (short-term disability paid only partial wages). But yesterday when Peter Ashford had brought her home from the hospital, he'd shown her a ring he'd had made for her—her Cartier engagement ring, which he'd recovered from the shop where she'd pawned it, with two more large diamonds mounted, on either side of the original stone. The past, the present and the future. He would keep it for her, he'd said, until she was ready to make a decision.

And on top of everything else, her brother, Wesley, was missing.

Wesley was supposed to have picked her up at the hospital yesterday in a taxi, and when he hadn't shown, his boss, Cooper Craft, had offered to go look for him. As oflast night, Coop hadn't found Wesley, but Carlotta was hopeful that her brother would turn up this morning. He'd come strolling into the house, whistling, with a mouse in a jar to feed his snake, Einstein, oblivious to the fact that Carlotta had barely slept last night, worrying about him….

Worrying about Wesley seemed to be her fate in life. She'd raised him since he was nine years old, when their parents had skipped town so their father could elude charges for investment fraud. Over the past decade, they'd heard from their parents only through a handful of postcards…until recently.

When a look-alike had stolen her identity and been murdered, Carlotta had agreed to fake her own death. The D.A. wanted to try to smoke out her parents and in exchange, they'd offered to suspend Wesley's probation for hacking into the courthouse computer records. But Kelvin Lucas, the D.A. who'd been denied the chance to prosecute her father, Randolph Wren, had reneged on his deal when her parents hadn't shown.

After Carlotta had alienated Wesley for going along with the plan.

After she'd put her friends and coworkers through the traumatic ordeal of thinking her dead.

And after she'd slept with Detective Jack Terry, her temporary live-in bodyguard.

What no one knew was that Carlotta's father had shown up, in disguise, and he'd recognized her, even though she was also in disguise. She hadn't known it was him until later, when she'd found the note he'd slipped into her pocket: "So proud of you both. See you soon. Dad"

The scrawled wordsleft her conflicted. During her parents' long absence, Carlotta had worked up a powerful resentment. Sometimes, she even cheerfully hated them. Leaving without saying goodbye. Leaving her to f inish raising Wesley when she was just a few months shy of graduating high school and barely equipped to take care of herself. Leaving no money, only a paid-for town house in a transitional section of Atlanta that was a far cry from the palatial home in Buckhead that they had lost.

College had no longer been an option. The only real expertise she'd had was…clothes. Her father had been a wealthy investment broker; Carlotta had worn nothing but the best since she could dress herself. Thankfully, she'd been able to turn that dubious skill into a career in retail. She'd been a top salesperson for most of her years at Neiman's… until lately, when her life had seemingly exploded with complications and new relationships.

And old ones.

"Did shithead make it home yet?"

Carlotta turned to see her friend Hannah Kizer standing there, hands on hips. Dressed in pink pj's with white bunny rabbits and without her severe goth makeup, Hannah looked almost human—pretty, even.

"Not yet."

"Have you heard from Coop?"

"Not yet."

"Don't worry. Wesley can take care of himself, whether you want to admit it or not."

"I wish you were right, but history has taught me otherwise."

"How's the arm?"

"Getting dressed is an aerobic workout. Thank heaven for front-closure bras."

"Yeah, I had a broken arm once. Men wanted to jump in bed with me. I guess it made me seem vulnerable or something."

"Or less likely to eat your prey?"

Hannah gave her the f inger, then dropped onto the couch, picked up the remote control and turned on the small TV. When the picture came on, it was warped. "What happened to your big-screen TV?"

Carlotta sat next to her friend and pointed to theliving room window, still covered with the boards the police had tacked in place. "Taken out during the drive-by shooting. I'm waiting for a new window to be delivered and installed, but we can't afford to replace the TV. Wesley shouldn't have bought it, anyway," she grumbled. "We could've used that money for other things."

Like paying toward what he owed his odious loan sharks, Father Thom and The Carver. Or paying down their credit card debt, which had ballooned in size since her identity had been stolen. Or catching up their loan payments, or any one of a hundred other bills they were late on.

Wesley said he'd sold his motorcycle to buy the TV, but she knew the television had cost more than his bike was worth. She figured he'd been gambling again, despite his claims to her that he'd stopped.

She turned her head to look at her friend. "Where could he be?"

"A thousand safe places," Hannah assured her.

"Or a thousand unsafe places. Those thugs for The Carver who tried to force me into their van the other day said that Wesley had pulled a stupid stunt and was in big trouble. What if they kidnapped him?"

"Look on the bright side—his loan sharks probably won't kill him because they want to collect their money."

Carlotta glared at her.

Hannah's smile fell. "Sorry. Just trying to lift the mood." She flipped channels past the midmorning game shows, and stopped on a local talk show, Atlanta &Company, where local celebutante KiKi Deerling was being interviewed in all her silky blond, micro-mini glory, snuggling her pet pug on her lap. It was the guilty pleasure that Carlotta needed to take her mind off Wesley.

But a minute into the interview, Hannah scoffed, "Give me a break. This girl is only famous for being famous. She's a total poser."

Carlotta nodded, but nursed a little pang of envy toward the young woman who had inherited beauty, money and a last name that adorned a jewelry empire headquartered in Atlanta. "It would be fun to live her life for a day, though. No worries, just party after party." She gave Hannah a pointed look. "For once, we wouldn't have to crash."

"That girl is a waste of human skin. You'd think with all that cash she'd buy some underwear. I've seen her twat more than my own."

"Thanks for the wholesome image."

"And you'd think she'd learn by now that if she's going to have sex with someone, she should sweep the room f irst for hidden cameras. I always do."

"Really?" Carlotta said. "What married man are you dating this week?"

"His name is Troy and he's a college professor."

"What does he teach?"

"Ethics."

"Oh, well then, plus ten points."

On television the starlet held up her pet pug, which she'd dressed in a T-shirt bearing the name of the camp she was promoting.

"Camp Kiki?" Hannah said. "Is that where kids go to breathe fresh air, learn to snort coke and become anorexic?"

"Cut her some slack," Carlotta said with a little laugh. "I've heard of this camp. It looks like she's at least trying to do something good for underprivileged kids."

"Underprivileged to her probably means anyone who doesn't have a driver." Hannah gave Carlotta a sideways look. "Sorry. I forgot that you used to be rich."

"Not that kind of rich."

"Are there classif ications for how rich you are?"

"Sure." Carlotta used the f ingers on her good hand to count them off. "There's inherited wealth, the kind that's so massive the heirs live off the interest. Then there's inherited wealth that has to be maintained, like taking over the reins of a family business. There are ranks within inherited wealth, depending on how prestigious the business—jewelry is near the top of the list. Then there's aristocratic wealth, meaning there's no cash flow, everyone just kind of exists off their family name and estate. My parents were farther down in the pecking order—they were bourgeois rich. My dad worked for his money."

Hannah lifted an eyebrow.

"Or stole it, depending on who you believe."

"And who do you believe?"

The note her father had slipped to her scratched the skin of her chest where she was keeping it in her bra. She was afraid that Wesley might find it if she left it in her bedroom. And truthfully, she just wanted to keep it close. "I honestly don't know. He was indicted for fraud, so the D.A. must have had a case, right?"

"Maybe. Maybe it was personal. What do you really know about the D.A.?"

"Just that he's a lying asshole for reneging on our deal."

"Well, there you go. Maybe he had some other motivation for charging your dad."

"So why didn't Dad stay and fight it? Why skip town and abandon his own kids?"

"I don't know."

"Would your parents do something like that?"

Hannah shifted on the couch, and it occurred to Carlotta that she had never talked about her parents. And frankly, Carlotta couldn't picture the people who had spawned her bizarre friend.

"Has your father called you again?" Hannah asked, neatly sidestepping Carlotta's question.

"No."

Not that it had been much of a conversation. He'd phoned her at work a few weeks ago and said, "It's Daddy." She'd been so startled, she'd dropped her cell phone—and the connection.

"And I broke my cell phone, so I couldn't even call back."

Hannah frowned and pointed to the end table. "Whose cell phone is that?"

"Mine, but…it's a new one."

"How did you afford a new phone?" Hannah asked suspiciously.

"Peter gave me an extra one that he had lying around."

Hannah picked up the sleek, razor-thin phone. "Right. This state-of-the-art gadget was just lying around. Did it belong to his murdered wife?"

"No!" At least Carlotta didn't think so.

"Is he paying for your service, too?"

"It didn't cost anything to add me to his plan," she said defensively.

"Yet. Don't kid yourself—the man plans to collect."

"Peter's been very good to me," Carlotta murmured.

"You mean the man who dumped you years ago when your parents left town? The man who's suddenly all over you when his wife has only been dead for a few weeks? Yeah, he's a real stand-up guy."

"It's complicated." No one knew that her father had also called Peter, who now worked for Mashburn &Tully, the investment f irm where her father had been accused of stealing from customers' accounts. Randolph Wren had asked Peter for his help in f inding an alleged f ile that could prove his innocence. It was a secret that bound her and Peter together.

Then there was the ring….

The sound of a car pulling into the driveway made Carlotta leap off the couch. "It's Coop," she said when she saw the white van. She watched until he got out of the van—alone. "But Wesley isn't with him."

She opened the front door and stepped out on the stoop in the early morning heat, eager for news. "Did you find him?"

Cooper Craft was tall and lean, with light brown hair and long, neat sideburns. He lifted his gaze to hers and shook his head. "No. You haven't heard from him?"

"No," Carlotta said, feeling the stirrings of true panic. "I've been calling his cell phone every hour. How far could he get on a bicycle?"

He gave her a little smile. "He'll turn up."

But she could tell by his haggard expression that Wesley's body-moving boss was worried, too. It made her sick with fear. "Come in. I'll make coffee."

Fame Fortune Murder?
By Rebecca
Carlotta is getting in on the body moving and it couldn't be more entertaining. The love trapezoid she has going on has me on the edge of my seat waiting to find out what happens. And when will Randolph Wren officially come out of the shadows. These books just keep getting better.

What's that big sucking sound?

Coop figures out a way to get some alone time with Carlotta, or at least, he thought he had until Wesley crashed the party. Coop is diggin' Carlotta and Carlotta is pretending to be diggin' him, when what she's really doing is hitching a ride down to Daytona Beach to see if she can flush out her fugitive parents. She even goes so far as to let the man get his head between her legs when Wesley actually saves the day - for Coop. (Coop is really too good for Carlotta).

I zipped through books one and two and eagerly sat down with three. I started this series with so much anticipation, and boom! right here is where it got tiresome. I really liked Carlotta and Wesley, but now I see them for the users they are. While Wesley tries to get himself out of loan shark and other assorted trouble, he pimps Carlotta to Peter, totally turning on his boss, Coop; and Carlotta, while well aware that Coop wants an exclusive and meaningful relationship with her, is also well aware that she doesn't necessarily want that type of relationship with him. (Don't know when she's going to get around to telling him, though.) But, gosh it's been so long since she had sex and her best friend (who has a crush on Coop and Carlotta knows about the crush) directed her to have some meaningless sex (best friend didn't know Carlotta would be trying Coop). Like Stephanie Plum, Carlotta's a closet skank. Trying to "choose" which of three men would make her happy when she's really channeling her inner whore. Carlotta is thirty years old or somewhere thereabouts. She needs to grow up.

So, should Carlotta pick Jack? Negly. Jack is handsome and good in bed, but he also makes it clear that his job comes FIRST. Should Carlotta pick Coop? Again, negly. Coop is handsome, but he's also sincere, thoughtful, kind, and funny, so while she makes up her mind between him and the other two, she uses him. Should Carlotta pick Peter? Ding, ding, ding! Jack is rough and exciting, she knows what sex is like with him. Coop is sincere and thoughtful and has no intentions on using her, so of course, he'll probably be the one to get the "let's just be friends" bounce. She almost found out what sex would be like with him. Yep, I figure that since Carlotta often daydreams about that privileged life she once had; she ought to get back to it before she pushes Jack to hurt her or totally screws up Coop's rehabilitative efforts. Oh, and she knows what sex is like with Peter since he was her first.

I finished reading this book and the plan was to rush to the library tomorrow and get #s 4-5, but I tried something. I had #6 which I had put aside until 4-5 could be read, but I decided to just browse through it to see if anything improved. NOPE!!!!!! And so I'm done. My advice? Stop at #2 and do like a fanfic thing. Imagine what would happen if . . . Books 1,2,3 and 6 go back to the library tomorrow; I'm no longer interested.
