As the last Healer in the Fifteen Realms, Avry of Kazan is in a unique position: in the minds of friends and foes alike, she no longer exists. Despite her need to prevent the megalomaniacal King Tohon from winning control of the Realms, Avry is also determined to find her sister and repair their estrangement. And she must do it alone, as Kerrick, her partner and sole confidant, returns to Alga to summon his country into battle.

Though she should be in hiding, Avry will do whatever she can to support Tohon's opponents. Including infiltrating a holy army, evading magic sniffers, teaching forest skills to soldiers and figuring out how to stop Tohon's most horrible creations yet: an army of the walking dead—human and animal alike and nearly impossible to defeat.

War is coming and Avry is alone. Unless she figures out how to do the impossible…again.

"I'm dead," I said to Kerrick.

He kept his flat expression, and I knew I'd get more cooperation from the cave's stone walls. Too bad for him that I didn't need his approval. But it would be nice if we worked out an agreement at least.

"No one knows I survived. It's the perfect opportunity for me to go undercover, and—"

"No. It's not safe," he said.

"Why not? No one will be looking for me. I could slip in—"

"What about Danny and Zila? They're going to need you to teach them how to be healers." Kerrick added another branch to our small fire.

We had stopped to rest in a narrow cave. Kerrick and I'd been traveling at night and sleeping during the day to keep a low profile since we still remained in Tohon Sogra's realm. We were close to what had been the Realm of Vyg's western border. After the plague had killed two-thirds of our population nearly six years ago, many of the Fifteen Realms resembled broken toys, with tiny pieces of their populations scattered far and wide.

Unfortunately Tohon had decided to sweep up those pieces to form one realm, or rather one kingdom. A good idea until you realized Tohon, the powerful life magician, was also a deluded megalomaniac whose army included a battalion of dead soldiers. Yes, dead. Tohon had discovered how to reanimate the dead.

"Danny and Zila don't need me yet. They're too young," I said. "Danny probably won't develop healing powers until he's closer to fifteen, which won't be for another year or two. Zila has six or seven more years."

"Still, it makes the most sense to rendezvous with Ryne in Ivdel as planned. We'll need to gather his men and then join forces with Estrid so we can stop Tohon's army from advancing into Pomyt."

"For you," I agreed. "Not me." Before he could argue, I added, "Besides, I gave my word to Estrid—"

"Which was voided when you died, Avry." He sat next to me and pulled me in close, wrapping an arm around my shoulder.

I leaned against him, breathing in his scent of spring sunshine and clean earth. Every time we talked about my death, he'd sought my touch as if he still couldn't believe I'd survived. Considering the plague had a hundred-percent fatality rate and it had indeed killed me a week ago, his actions were understandable.

However, a giant Peace Lily had brought me back to life. The ramifications of that action were…huge. Which was why I needed to figure out exactly what happened and what it meant for the rest of the Fifteen Realms. Or what was left of them.

I dropped the topic. For now. Kerrick and I had just admitted our feelings for each other. We had seven more days until we reached Peti, and I didn't want to spend that time arguing with him. So much better to do…other, more intimate activities while we rested.

We approached the outer edge of Peti near dawn. Stopping in a thick copse of trees, Kerrick reached out with his forest magic to search for ambushers, marauders or mercs. His magic was a gift from the forest, and through that connection, he sensed other people. Or rather, he felt the irritations and annoyances that the forest considered intruders to its home.

When I held Kerrick's hand, I also connected and experienced the unique bond he shared with the forest. I wondered if my eye color changed from sea-green to a darker green when his magic zipped through my body. Kerrick's eye color changed to match the forest. Since it was the middle of spring, the surrounding greenery was thick and lush, an emerald carpet.

When I had first met him, his eyes were russet with flecks of gold, orange and maroon. The warm colors belied his personality at the time. He had been as cold and distant as the snow-capped peaks of the Nine Mountains.

But not anymore.

He caught me staring and smiled. It transformed his face from unreadable to…happy. Which still surprised me. I had been used to him gazing at me with annoyance, anger or exasperation, and these pleasant looks threw me.

He waited.

I shook my head and returned to studying the town. It was near the foothills of the Nine Mountains. Even from this distance, it appeared that most of the buildings had burned down. No signs of life.

"Do you think the marauders got to Peti?" I asked. Since it was the closest town to the main pass through the mountains, it had been a popular place to stop before making the treacherous crossing.

Even after the plague, Peti had managed to survive. But without law enforcement, large groups of marauders had formed in the foothills. They would attack populated areas when they ran out of food and supplies. They'd killed, looted and burned without mercy.

"Probably before Tohon got to them," he said.

Tohon had swept through the foothills and killed all the marauders, leaving their bodies for us to trip over. He had claimed he was cleaning out the undesirables that had infected his kingdom. I considered Tohon's abominations—his dead soldiers. Why wouldn't he turn those marauders into more mindless, obedient troops? I asked Kerrick.

"He wanted us to find them. So we would rush to the pass and right into his ambush."

I shuddered. The memory of the dead carrying me away still haunted my sleep along with Tohon's voice beckoning me. The forest didn't consider those things intruders because they weren't alive. According to Kerrick, the living green ignored the damage they inflicted since it couldn't sense any life nearby. Which meant the dead could sneak up on Kerrick. An unpleasant thought.

"Let's check out Peti before we find a place to rest," Ker-rick said.

As expected, no one lived among the burned ruins. A light breeze swirled the ash. Our boots crunched on broken glass. Peti was bigger than I had thought. As we drew closer to the center, we encountered a few brick factories and businesses that had survived the fire. The flames had missed the heart of the town. With the marauders gone, people could return and build anew.

Except Peti was in the Realm of Vyg. Even though it was near the eastern border, this area was technically occupied by Tohon's army. Kerrick and I had dodged a number of his patrols on our way here.

Kerrick found another small cave for us to hide in until nightfall. I understood the need to be hidden from sight and protected from an attack. However, I would have liked to camp under the sky for our last day together.

We set up our bedrolls and lit a small fire to drive off the chill and cook a simple meal. Sitting on opposite sides, I broached the subject of my future plans.

"No," Kerrick said without considering anything I'd just said.

"I'm not asking. I need to talk to my sister. To explain—"

"No. It's too dangerous."

"I'm not asking," I repeated because he tended to think he was in charge. "Besides, I was on the run for three years. I know how to get around without encountering trouble. And I can defend myself." I pulled one of my throwing knives and pointed it at Kerrick. "And I know how to walk through the woods without making noise, so I'll stick to the forest. Plus my healing powers can be used—"

"I know," he growled.

I suppressed a smile, remembering blasting him with pain. He'd deserved it. I'd been trying to escape from him and his companions, but he wouldn't let go. And he called me stubborn. He was the most obstinate person I knew. Worry flared. Would he drag me to Ivdel with him?

"No one knows I'm alive," I said again. "No one is looking for me. No more bounty hunters, no mercenaries or Tohon's dead." And best of all, no Tohon. The man who'd threatened to claim me, and I knew, if push came to shove, he could with one touch. I hugged my arms close to my body.

"But what about the patrols? And Estrid's holy army? Or Jael? She killed Flea and tried to kill us. If she sees you…" Fear cracked his stony expression for a moment. "She won't. I'll wear a disguise."

"But your sister is Jael's page. If you get close to Noelle, she'll know."

"Then I'll make sure Noelle's alone."

"But what if she still hates you? She'll tell Jael you're alive."

He had me there.

I thought fast. "Then I won't approach Noelle until after you and Ryne arrive with his army." Hopefully in time to help Estrid defeat Tohon. Without Ryne, there was more than a good chance Tohon would overrun her defenses and add all of us to his ranks of dead. "I'll do reconnaissance and fact-gathering. I promise." I sensed a softening. "Tohon told me he has spies in Estrid's camp. I might be able to find them."

"No. You lie low, blend in and don't call attention to yourself. Learn what you can from watching and listening. Don't ask questions." Even though he was clearly unhappy, he continued. "You'll need a good disguise. Go to Mom's in Men-gels, she'll—"

"But she's days out of the way, and I don't want anyone to know I'm alive."

"If you don't follow my suggestions, then I'll just follow you." And he would.

I kept my expression neutral. "Why Mom's?"

"Before the plague she helped women who had run away from their abusive husbands. Her inn was known as a safe house for these women, and she would give them a new look, a new name and find them a safe place to live." He held a hand up. "She'll keep all your secrets. You can trust her. That's why everyone calls her Mom."

"All right. Any other suggestions?"

"Don't work in the infirmary. I know it'll be tempting, but find a job that lets you be invisible. Like a maid or a kitchen servant."

"Okay. Anything else?"

"Stay away from anyone you recognize or know. Belen's still there." Kerrick's face paled. "You should tell Belen. He can help."

"No, he can't. Come on, Kerrick, you know he's a rotten liar."

"Easy for you to say. He's not going to rip your arms off." He hugged his arms to his chest.

"He's not going to hurt you," I said. Or would he? Belen was the Poppa Bear of our group, and we had become close friends. The thought of him mourning my death almost changed my mind.

"Have Prince Ryne tell him. I sacrificed my life for his, so he owes me one." Ryne had had the plague and I'd healed him by assuming the sickness.

Unfortunately for the six million people who had died, the plague killed healers as well, so we'd stopped healing plague victims until we could determine another way. But once the population panicked and rumors spread that we refused to help people…it had turned ugly fast. Long story short, I was the last healer alive until Danny and Zila's powers woke. If they did.

"How long are you going to play dead?" Kerrick asked.

"As long as I can. It's a good strategy."

"For you. I'm the one that's going to have to deal with Belen, Quain and Loren."

"I'm sure Ryne's keeping them busy with his genius military tactics that will stop Tohon." Which was the reason I'd given up my life for him.

Kerrick relaxed his arms and moved to sit next to me. He pulled me close. "At least I won't have to act like I'm sad and missing you."

"You mean you'll go from moody, sullen and distant, to moody, sullen, distant and sad? The guys won't suspect a thing," I teased.

"Don't start." He tangled his fingers in my hair. "You were the reason for all those…"

"Temper tantrums? Grumpiness? Irritability?"

He tilted my head until I gazed up at him. A dangerous glint shone in his eyes. "You didn't make it easy."

"True, but neither did you."

"True." A hint of a smile. "I guess we're meant to be together."

"Surprisingly," I agreed.

"Not to Belen. Once he forgives me for lying to him, he's going to gloat."

Belen had been his loyal friend, bodyguard and all but his older brother ever since Kerrick was born. It made sense that he could read Kerrick better than anyone.

"When did he figure it out?" I asked.

"Well before I did." Kerrick gazed at the fire. "I think he made a comment after you escaped and I saved you from the mercs."

An odd time. Kerrick had been furious at me. "And when did you…agree with him?"

"My feelings started changing after you healed Belen and we were at Mom's." He returned his focus to me. Cupping my face with his other hand, he said, "You had me tied in knots. You saved Belen's life, and I wanted to kill you and thank you at the same time. And during those nights when we didn't know if you'd live or die, I went from being angry to worried to frustrated to scared all within a single heartbeat. If you had died, I would have killed you."

"You know that doesn't make sense, right?"

"Nothing about that time made sense."

"You kept me from dying. Did you know that?"

He tilted his head in surprise. "No. How?"

"You gave me the energy to heal myself. If you hadn't stayed with me and held my hand, I would have gone into the afterlife."

"And here I thought it was Mom's tonics."

"Good thing the Lamp Post Inn is on the edge of the forest."

"That's why I like it. I can still access my power there. That and her desserts are the best in the Fifteen Realms."

"I'll make sure I try some when I'm there."

All humor fled his face. "But I won't be there to watch your back."

"Then I'll have to be extra careful."

"Promise?"

"Yes." I leaned forward and kissed him. He was right. What I planned to do was dangerous, but these were dangerous times. And I needed to become Noelle's older sister again before I resumed being Avry the healer. Plus my decision allowed me the freedom to just be a regular person. Someone unno-ticeable, who blended in and didn't attract Tohon's attention.

When we reached the border road between Vyg and Pomyt that night, Kerrick had a few last-minute instructions. "Stay in the forest on the east side of the border. Better to go through Pomyt Realm than to get caught in the middle of any skirmishes in Vyg. You'll be safer traveling in the daylight."

I nodded, even though I knew to stay out of Vyg and to avoid Zabin until I was disguised. He needed to tell me. Plus if he didn't lecture me, I'd worry he was following me as he had when I'd surrendered to Tohon. His forest magic had camouflaged him, and I'd never seen him until he appeared without warning in the garden.

Kerrick had been livid since he'd seen me kissing Tohon.

Under the influence of Tohon's life magic, I hadn't had a choice. His powers had filled me with an unnatural desire and smashed my willpower to dust. After Tohon had left, and still reeling from Tohon's display of dominance, I'd been grabbed by Kerrick who had then confessed he'd be upset if Tohon lured me away.

"Avry, are you listening to me?"

"Yes. Vyg bad. Pomyt good."

"Avry." His aggravation was clear.

I smiled. He was rather handsome when he was annoyed. Before he could launch into another lecture, I handed him Flea's juggling stones for Belen, the letter and necklace for Noelle and the pouch full of Quain and Loren's favorite herbs for them.

Middle Book Syndrome
By Amazon Customer
I liked Maria V Snyder's 'Poison' series (though it too lagged in the middle) so I rushed out to buy the 'Glass' series only to be very disappointed (in fact I didn't even finish the third). I thought she had redeemed herself with the new 'Healers' series as I really liked the first one (Touch of Magic) but then along came number 2.

It wasn't awful (I still like the main characters) but nothing really happened. The main problem is that Kerrick and Avry spend almost the entire book apart, have fairly mundane adventure and don't even develop as characters. In fact the whole plot stalls and very little is added to what we already knew about the world and those who live there. The few new characters introduced end up being pretty inconsequential and most of new development could have been covered in a chapter or two and the rest is just filler!

Note to authors - all series don't have to trilogies! Two good books are better than 3 dragged out ones. Even financially in the long run .. I'm not sure I'll other with number 3 in this series either!

A great second installment it will leaving you wanting more !
By K. M. Whittaker - Page Flipperz Blog
SCENT OF MAGIC by Maria V. Snyder's is the second instalment of the Healer series. This author has once again put forth such vivid descriptions, beautiful and captivating words that will not only draw you into the pages but also give us some wonderful characters that you will easily enjoy.

Maria creates sassy characters - strong main leads, and an array of wonderful supporting characters to blend throughout this story. Her characters are always filled with such depth; you cannot help but like them. More so in this instalment as we see into Kerricks thoughts.

In Scent of magic we see Kerrick's pov and also Avry's which was nice to see. The perspective of characters changed but also turned the read into an interesting change for me the reader. We see both sides, and loving Kerrick's character this was an added bonus for me. The only thing I would have enjoyed more of is more time with Avry and Kerrick, I found it was a little short on the romance and page time - but none the less still enjoyed this story.

This story is jam packed with action, friendship and love, suspense, dangerous liaisons, a little bit of romance for all the readers whom enjoy a little heart flutter, and many emotions entwined within this captivating world that Ms Synder has created.

The ending will leave you gasping for more with its shocking cliff-hanger and have you eagerly flying to the net to find out when the next instalment is due out loll.

A great second instalment into this series I can't wait for the next!!!!!!!!!!

A big thanks to Harlequin Teen Australia for sending me an ARC copy of this book. This review is copyrighted, owned by me and cannot be copied or shared without my permission except by the author or publisher for promotion purpose

A great story - a frustrating read.
By TJ Mackay
After an amazing start in "Touch of Power", where we quickly grew to love Avry, Kerrick and their co-horts, this, the second book in the series, took a very frustrating turn. Rather than allow the reader to discover the deepening relationships, she separated the main characters throughout the entire book. We see Avery's journey and Kerrick's journey but as completely separate stories. Why develop a relationship with such great chemistry as these characters have, just to quit and continue their stories separately? And, so soon! Their story was just beginning!
This odd twist is also found in the secondary characters. All the relationships first built are now separate. Avry ends up with a whole new set of people to interact with. While the story is still a good one, the characters needed to have a chance to develop together before pulling them apart.
Even so, this book would have rated 4 stars if not for the ending. Really? REALLY? We are FINALLY allowed the reunion only to have it ripped from us... And, the cliffhanger reeks of manipulation. After over 400 pages the reader is not allowed any closure but teased with a taste then thrown right off that jagged cliff. Seriously, if the writing weren't so well done, three stars would have been a dream.

Willow walked quickly along Chartres Street.

Her breathing grew shallower, and the space between her shoulder blades prickled.

Don't look back. Keep going.

Jazz blared from bars and clubs. People spilling from doorways onto New Orleans's crowded sidewalks jostled her in the throng. They danced, raised their plastic cups of booze and wiggled the way they never would at home. Colored metallic beads draped necks and more strands were thrown from flower-laden balconies overhead. Laughter and shouting all but drowned out the noise of passing vehicles.

Another French Quarter evening was tuning up.

Her new enemy clawed at the pit of her stomach: panic. Until a few days ago she had been a completely in-charge, take-on-the-world woman. Then she had become convinced she was being followed.

Whenever she left her flat in the Court of Angels behind her family's antiques shop, J. Clive Millet on Royal Street, someone watched her every move. They were waiting for the right moment to grab her—she was certain of it.

Don't run.

Sweat stung her eyes, turned her palms slick, and her heart beat so hard and fast she couldn't swallow.

If she didn't prefer to ignore the paranormal talents she had in common with the rest of the Millet family, she could come right into the open and ask some or at least one of them for advice. But how could she ask Uncle Pascal, her brother, Sykes; her sister Marley; or even one of her other sisters in London if they would help? Despite some recent slips, she continued to insist she was "normal," and so were they.

Willow suspected her family watched her more closely these days, which meant they had figured out that she was stressed. Keeping anything from them for long was impossible. She felt the smallest twinge of guilt for enjoying the comfort that gave her.

Why was she only feeling someone shadowing her rather than actually seeing a face? That was one of her talents—she saw the face of a negative human force, sometimes a long time before meeting the person.

This time she couldn't pick up any image.

Darn it that she was burdened with the Millet mystique. She saw the looks she got. Every New Orleans native knew about the family, which she didn't think helped her business, Mean 'n Green Concierge, all things domestic, nothing too large or too small. She only mentioned her concierge services in ads she placed for personal assistant services.

The sun was lower, a red ball that seemed to pulse in a purpling haze. And there was no air—just tight, wet pressure. Willow had grown up in the city and loved it, but heat did add to the sense of doom she felt.

Even the scent of flowers cascading from the scrollwork of black iron galleries was too sweet. That didn't make any sense. Willow loved to smell scented petunias and jasmine, and the rich floral brew that almost overcame the aroma of hot grit and used booze. Not today.

She cut a left onto St. Louis Street. Usually she rode her green-and-white scooter with its little equipment trailer around town, but since she'd only been going to discuss an order with Billy Baker, the specialty baker she used, she'd decided to walk instead.

Being on the scooter would feel safer—even more so when she got her new helmet with large, rearview mirrors.

Two blocks and she turned right onto Royal Street. A cop listened distractedly to a ranting drunk and his gesticulating buddies. For an instant Willow considered asking to talk to the cop, but what would she say?

She didn't run, but she did speed up.

Her hair lifted a little on one side, as if blown by a breeze, only there wasn't one. Softness brushed her neck, then something tiny and sharp.

A scream erupted; she couldn't stop it. Willow stood still, forced the sound from her lips and then spun around, searching in every direction. Nothing. There was nothing but people, people everywhere. She touched her neck but there was zero to feel.

She got stares, and more space to herself on the sidewalk.

The shop sign, J. Clive Antiques, shone gold against black paint and she did run the final yards until she could get inside. The doorbell jangled, and she jumped, despite expecting the sound. She closed herself inside and bowed her head while she marched purposefully toward French doors leading out into the Court of Angels at the back of the shop. Her flat was there among those belonging to other family members. She wanted to get to her private place and lock herself in.

"There you are, Willow."

Uncle Pascal. Current family head since Willow's father had abdicated his responsibilities—more than twenty years earlier—in favor of running after family secrets in various parts of the world, Uncle Pascal had a penchant for stating the obvious.

"Here I am," Willow said and thought, and here I go, as she carried on past gleaming old furniture, glittering glass and finely glowing paintings, toward her goal: the back door.

"I've been waiting for you," Uncle said, moving into her path. "I say little about you continuing with this silly, mundane business of yours when you should be honing your natural skills, but I do expect you to check in with me more regularly than you do."

"Sorry, but I do make sure you see me in the mornings."

She dodged to one side.

So did Uncle Pascal—the same side. "I want to talk to you about your future," he said.

She looked at him, big, muscular, shaven-headed and handsome…and really irritated right now.

"Futures take care of themselves if we let them," she said, instantly wishing she hadn't said anything at all. "I mean—"

"I know what you mean. You have buried your head in the sand and you continue to pretend you can avoid who and what you are. We all know what you are, Willow. And now you are needed to play an active part in the very serious situation we're all facing in New Orleans."

Very serious situation? Do you know exactly what's been happening to me?

What she must not do was lead the potential witness, her uncle. If he knew something that would impact her, let him spell it out on his own.

"You don't intend to come clean with me, do you?" Uncle Pascal said. "Despite everything, you'll go on pretending everything is what you call, normal."

She raised her chin. "What makes you so sure it's not?"

"We have our ways, and we already know it's not," he said, his brows drawn ominously downward over a pair of the very green eyes common to all Millets, except her brother, Sykes, which was a great concern to some members of the family. "But this delivery proves we aren't the only ones aware of a threat."

He went behind the shiny mahogany counter and hauled an open cardboard box on top.

"Who are we, Uncle?"

He scrubbed at his bald scalp. If he didn't shave it, there would be a thick head of red hair, but for reasons they all tried to ignore, he had first shaved it when he took Antoine's place as head of the Millets. Uncle Pascal didn't want the job, or so he said, and since the red hair was one of the major attributes that qualified him, he chose to get rid of it in defiance.

"Who?" Willow repeated, growing angry at the thought of the others huddling together to discuss her—invading her privacy, as usual. "Have you been in my head again? You know it's against the rules unless you ask permission to enter my mind."

"Rules?" Pascal said, his brows elevated now. "What rules? You don't believe in the Millet rules, or anything about the paranormal talents with which we are all blessed—so why would you care or acknowledge the rules? Or are you finally accepting them?"

She closed her mouth and crossed her arms. There would be no winning an argument with Uncle Pascal.

"Even if we didn't know something unusual is going on with you, this would make sure we suspected as much."

He lifted a crash helmet from the box. White with Mean 'n Green's lime-green insignia that looked a bit like the wings on the Greek Hermes's heels, it was the twin of the one she already used, apart from rather large rearview cycling mirrors mounted on either side.

Willow gaped. "You opened my stuff!"

"It wasn't shut. It was delivered by a messenger from the place where you bought it. I thought it was something for the shop. Aren't these mirrors interesting?"

"For safety," she said, glowering. No way would she admit she wanted eyes in the back of her head these days and mirrors were the next best thing.

"And what about this?" He placed a smaller, oblong box beside the bigger one. "I suppose this is for safety, too."

"That's my business." She scrambled to excuse that second box. "It's something I'm going to give Marley and Gray for their kitchen." Her sister Marley and Gray Fisher were recently married, or Bonded as the Millets preferred to call it. There had also been an actual wedding to please Gray's dad, Gus, who was one of Willow's favorite customers.

"I know what's in this," Uncle said.

She snatched it away and turned it over. It was unopened. "No, you don't. You're trying to trick me into telling you."

"Why do you think I need to open a box to know what's inside?" he said. "Don't you think a Beretta PX4 Storm is a bit overkill for a first handgun?"

Ben Fortune also saw the gun inside the package and couldn't imagine Willow being able to hold the thing steady. This was a very small woman. He knew well that she was strong, but could she hit what she wanted to hit with the weapon?

He saw Willow's back stiffen. That didn't have to be because she had sensed him behind her, standing near a Napoleonic desk he had been examining when she hurried into the shop. But given the long pause after Pascal announced the gun, he didn't think she was reacting to that. She should have responded to her uncle by now.

Odds were that she did sense Ben. His own fault since he should have made sure that was not possible until he wanted it to be. From Pascal's behavior he must have assumed Ben would mask his presence until he was alone with Willow. Pascal had promised to leave them once he'd had his say with his niece.

Too bad one glimpse of her and Ben had forgotten to do what should come naturally—reveal only what he must until he found out exactly how the land lay with the woman formerly pledged to become his lifelong Bonded partner.

That was a pledge he had never given up on, regardless of how Willow thought she could call all the shots. Despite sending him away—for good, she had insisted—she must have expected him back eventually.

Ben smiled slightly. A few experiments, really touching experiments, would prove if they still had what it took to send each other into pain and ecstasy at the same time. They had never actually made love—Willow had seen to that—but the foreplay was explosive, unforgettable. He heated up from the inside out thinking about those incendiary sensations. That electric, erotic pain between two of their kind was considered proof of preordained Bonding with a Millet. Somewhere in the mists of that family's founding, a brilliant elder must have thought such intense feelings would test the loyalty of a male's prospective mate and protect their women's honor.

Apparently, the founder responsible for the concept had not taken into account that irresistible stimulation could become addictive.

There would be a test between Ben and Willow, but he had no doubt the compulsion would be as strong as ever.

He hadn't seen her in two years since she told him they weren't meant for each other. After that she wouldn't see or speak to him.

Ben had left New Orleans, and ran the family business—a very successful club, Fortunes, and other enterprises around the city—from his retreat on the island of Kauai.

"You can see inside closed packages?" Willow said to Pascal.

"That surprises you?"

She muttered something, but she wasn't concentrating on her uncle. Instead Ben could see her struggle not to turn around. Her shoulder blades pressed together, then released, as if she were trying to relax.

Well, if the way he reacted simply to the sight of her was any indication of things to follow, he'd better not miss any vitamins.

"Hey, Willow, remember me?" he asked her through channels he attempted to open between their minds.

He'd lost his marbles, not that she had ever responded to his mind contacts in the past. That would have put the lie to her insistence that she had no paranormal powers.

"What are you doing here?" she responded, gripping the counter with both hands.

His turn to stiffen. The muscles in his back and thighs turned rock hard. Damn, this was great, she'd forgotten to cover up.

"What do you think? You and I have unfinished business. It's been unfinished for too long. And you need me now—you need all of us."

"Sykes got you here, didn't he? He could have talked to me about it first. You two have always shut me out."

"You decided to shut us out, Willow. You and I could always be as close as you wanted to be. The decisions on that were yours, remember?"

"I didn't ask you to come. I—Oh, darn it."

He felt her cut him off. It was gratifying to know he could cause her to break rules she'd made for herself in her teens when Willow had decided she would be "normal."

"You're upset and trying not to need anyone. Don't shut me out." It was worth another try to establish an intimate connection with her.

predictable/unlikeable characters
By Amazon Customer
I tried to make it all the way through the second book of this series, but gave up 3/4 of the way through. It was easy enough to figure out who were the bad guys, so that continued non-mystery got boring fast. The heroin, Willow, was an annoying and easily manipulated character. There was nothing that made me think Ben and Willow cared each other, especially since she had so little faith in him. The other characters refused to talk about anything with each other, making me wonder how they could be so close. If you haven't read the first book, this one will make little sense to you. Also, Cameron has a way of writing that seems to be leading to something, but then goes no where. I'm not even interested in the third book, partly due to the introduction of the unlikeable heroin.

Didn't do it for me
By C Thilmany
Second book in a romantic paranormal suspense trilogy involving the psychic Millet family (there are a few strong psychic families in New Orleans) fighting the Embran, an underworld race that is dying out and has a grudge against the Millets and wants/needs to take over the world.

Willow Millet has denied her abilities all her life, wanting to be the normal one in the family. But when the Embran seem to be targeting her through her customers, and the bond and telepathy she shares with Ben Fortune from another psychic family becomes too apparent, she finally relents and opens up to her abilities. Willow's customers are dying of heart attacks after being attacked by something unseen and either Willow or her employees are the last to see them alive. Other people are disappearing, and the upper echelon of the police is clueless about paranormals, leaving Ben and the Millets (with one detective and his partner) to figure things out and fight their foe.

I received this book to review for Library Thing and had not read the first book, which is a huge mistake. What took place in Out of Body is important to this book and without it this story lacked the impact it might have otherwise had for me. I liked the premise of the situation, but that's the best I can say about my experience in reading this book. I got lost in some of the paranormal sequences and had to go back at times to figure out what was taking place.

It was too easy for me to put down and I never felt any empathy for the characters, which makes it difficult for the romance aspect to work for me. A reveal of some bad guys did take me by surprise at the end, but it wasn't enough for me to want to pick up either the first or last book to see if I'd enjoy it more.

I would have given this only 1 star but am giving the benefit of the doubt that it could have been more enjoyable if I'd read Out of Body before Out of Mind.

Out of Mind
By mnix
Willow Millet has long ignored and turned her back on the `gifts' her family says they have. Willow wants nothing more then to be a normal business owner, and her business is going great until murders begin to happen around her clients and employees. Now Willow will have to open up the door she long ago closed in order to save not only herself, but also the people she cares about.

Benedict (Ben) Fortune left New Orleans at Willow's request. After getting a phone call telling him about the murders, Ben is back to stay and to hopefully discover why Willow turned away from their bonding. Ben is also from one of the old psychic families and knows that Willow is hiding from herself. Ben knows his gifts are strong and just hopes they are strong enough.

Willow had the strength to turn away from her bonding with Ben once but knows she won't be able to again. Ben and Willow follow the clues to find out what is happening, and why, only to discover the Embran again. Willow's business has taken a serious hit which makes her only more determined to discover why she seems to be the center of the activity. The passion between Ben and Willow is as strong as ever and this time neither can turn away from it. Just when Willow thinks she will have to do something serious to save her business a silver lining might have shown up but the circumstances don't make Ben all that happy. Can Ben and Willow discover the truth about what the Embran have planned and put a stop to it?

A love thought lost is flaming again with danger as a background. Out of Mind brings Willow and Ben back together in the Court of Angels. Willow never wanted to accept she was anything other than normal. Ben always accepted his gifts and wanted nothing more than to have Willow as his bond mate. I wondered what would finally make Willow accept her heritage and should have known it would be love and loyalty to her friends and the people who trusted her. This time the Embran were much more personal in their fighting and I can't help but wonder what will be next for them. What Ben and Willow were going through made me want to hug them, but I knew that their had to be a happy ending for them and I wasn't wrong. I also fell for Mario, the cute little dog that found Willow. Out of Mind proves that you can never turn your back on a passion that was meant to be. The danger caused by the Embran and the discovery of more about not only the Millets, but also the other New Orleans psychic families, only intrigued me more for the next book.

You could read the Court of Angels series as stand alone books, but I think you will get much more out of the intertwining plot if you read them in order.

Surrounded by the serene beauty of the Shenandoah Valley and aided by the warmth of her rural community, Kendra begins a major restoration of the cabin, her life and her relationship with Isaac. "Complex characters, compelling emotions and the healing power of forgiveness-what could be better? I loved this book!"

"Richards pieces together each woman's story as artfully as a quilter creates a quilt, with equally satisfying results, and her characterizations are transcendent, endowed with warmth and compassion."
--Booklist on Wedding Ring

"(A) heartwarming, richly layered story." -Library Journal, starred review of Endless Chain

"(Richards) draws these women of different generations together. Richards should've included a special pull-out hanky insert, but readers looking for positive resolutions won't be disappointed."

Engrossing ...
By rebelmomof2
I love quilting books (or books with quilting themes in it). I love Emilie Richard's books simply because she is a thorough writer and she always introduces a new character from a previous book, so you feel like you are among friends. Her books has a way of drawing you into the story ~~ or in this case, a story within a story.

It starts out with Kendra almost losing her life in an attempted carjacking attack. Six months later after extensive therapy, she decides that she needs to go and live in her husband's grandmother's cabin. She takes Isaac's quilt, called The Lover's Knot ~~ with her as well. Isaac remains behind in Washington D.C., and Kendra fearing the end of her marriage, decides to recuperate away from the city and in the mountains. Little did she know that she would find a new home among the citizens that live in the tiny town. And little did she know that she would discover Isaac's grandmother's deep secret.

Isaac was given up for adoption as a child. He didn't have an easy childhood as his adoptive father was mentally abusive. So he didn't want to know anything about his biological family because he thought they were just as bad for giving him up for adoption. Turns out his grandmother Leah had a story and that story haunted two of her friends for years. It talked about being relocated from their home which has been turned over to the government to make a park. It gives a bit of history as well and Leah shares her stories through letters.

It's a bittersweet novel and a very wonderful one. Kendra and Isaac find themselves through history and simple daily life in the country. It's a big contrast to the high-power living in a big city ~~ and very relaxing.

Only Richards can write like this ~~ full of warmth and sunshine and hope. Her novels have always made me curl up on the couch and relax with a cup of tea on hand. It's wonderful, cozy and engrossing. Always.

------Fascinating history woven into a memorable story------
By Judith Miller
LOVER'S KNOT is the third book in the Shenandoah Album stories and, for me the best book in this series. The beginning of the story takes place in Washington, D.C. and then eventually moves on to Tom`s Brook, VA. I know these areas pretty well. So, reading this story brought many familiar images to mind.

Kendra Taylor, is a successful writer who lives with her husband in Washington, D. C. One evening on a trip to the pharmacy, she's mugged and shot twice. Recovery is made even more difficult because in some ways, she blames her husband, Isaac, for not being there when she needed him. Since they own a small cabin in Tom's Brook, Virginia, she goes there to be alone. She needs to recuperate and also to decide if she will stay in the marriage. Isaac had actually inherited the cabin and an old quilt from his natural grandmother, who he never knew, because he had been given up for adoption as a baby. He has a lot of mixed feelings about families since his adoption experience was not a happy one and he does not want his wife staying in the isolated cabin and searching back in his past.

As Kendra recuperates, she becomes more and more interested in the lady who had owned and lived in the cabin. She also wants to know more about the old quilt. and why it was left to Isaac. Meeting people from the community, she begins to learn about Isaac's real family and their history. The story also takes the reader into the history of Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Mountains.

This is a well done and for me, touching story!

terrific family drama
By A Customer
In Washington DC the mugger almost killed reporter Kendra Taylor. Physically she has recovered however mentally she suffers from a form of battle fatigue syndrome as she fears every shadow. Needing time to heal from the trauma, she leaves the capital for remote the rustic cabin once occupied by the grandmother of her husband Isaac.

Kendra uses her time away also as a chance to determine whether she wants to remain married to Isaac. As she recovers her sense of worth, Kendra begins to restore the cabin and think deeply about her relationship with Isaac whom she knows she still loves at the same time she investigates a lovingly made quilt left to Isaac that though created years ago might provide answers to the confused reporter.

LOVER'S KNOT is an intriguing character study that focuses deeply on the aftermath of a traumatic event, but through the star, readers also see the collateral damage to her loved ones. The story line is owned heart and soul by Kendra who has not mentally healed from the mugging, which in turn has her concentrate on her life including her relationship with her beloved spouse. Her investigation and subsequent findings re the quilt enhance a terrific family drama, past and present, filtered through the frightened emotionally scarred heroine.

Chicago is burning

And Lucy Hathaway is running for her life. As she rushes past a fine hotel engulfed in flames, a wrapped bundle tumbles from a window into her arms. Seconds later the building crumbles—and Lucy is astonished to discover the swaddled blanket contains a baby.

Setting: Chicago 1871

Sensuality: 7

In one catastrophic night, unconventional debutante Lucy Hathaway meets and propositions powerful banker Randolph Higgins, risks her life to save a baby girl, then loses her father and the family fortune in the chaos of the great Chicago fire. Five years later, she's older, wiser, and the proud owner of The Firebrand, a bookstore that caters to suffragettes and free thinkers. Fate throws her once again into the path of Randolph Higgins when she must apply to his bank for an extension on the loan that financed her bookstore. She discovers that Randolph is now a scarred, bitter, divorced man, and that he believes his daughter died in the fire. One glance at the photo on his desk tells her that Maggie, the child she saved and adopted that terrible night, is his lost daughter.

Lucy's strong sense of honor drives her to tell Randolph the truth. Now the conservative banker and the fiercely independent Lucy must deal with each other for Maggie's sake. Despite the resulting clash of wills and differing political views, the powerful attraction that drew them together five years earlier still exists. Can these two stubborn, opinionated people find a way to nurture a life together, for the sake of Maggie and their own battered hearts?

The Firebrand pits a strong heroine reluctant to abandon her independence against a hero grounded in traditional concepts of marriage and female roles. The rich details of life in 1870s Chicago, well-developed secondary characters, and the exploration of the women's suffrage movement all add up to making The Firebrand a rare treat. This third and final novel in Susan Wiggs's Chicago Fire trilogy will delight fans and new readers alike.--Lois Faye Dyer

From Publishers Weekly
The great Chicago fire of 1871 is the catalyst for a story that deftly portrays a romance against the backdrop of the budding suffrage movement. Despite Lucy Hathaway's aristocratic background, her fiery political views and unconventional attitudes make her a social outsider. Nevertheless, she feels unexpectedly drawn to handsome banker Rand Higgins until she discovers that he's married to a dainty china doll of a woman. The fire changes everything, however, badly injuring Rand, estranging his wife and depriving Lucy of her father and her wealth. In the strangest twist of all, Rand's infant daughter, presumed dead in the fire, lands in Lucy's arms and is raised as an orphan. Although fate brings Lucy and Rand together again, the obstacles to their growing passion seem almost insurmountable. Both attempt to obtain custody of the child, and Lucy's association with the suffragists enrages Rand's banking colleagues. With this final installment of Wiggs's Chicago Fire trilogy (which also includes The Mistress), she has created a quiet page-turner that will hold readers spellbound as the relationships, characters and story unfold. Fans of historical romances will naturally flock to this skillfully executed trilogy, and general women's fiction readers should find this story enchanting as well. (Apr.)

From Booklist
Chicagoan Lucy Hathaway is wealthy, but her radical politics keep the suitors away. She tries out her theory of free love by propositioning Rand Higgins, an attractive banker, at a lecture, then is embarrassed to learn that he's married, but all is forgotten when they exit into the hell of the great Chicago fire of 1871. As Lucy struggles home, a woman throws a bundle out of a window as the building explodes. Lucy names the baby girl Maggie after her efforts to find the child's family fail. Having lost her father and the family fortune in the fire, Lucy opens up the Firebrand, a suffragist bookstore, and lives upstairs with her mother and Maggie. Five years later, when the Firebrand faces foreclosure, Lucy goes to the bank and discovers that Rand, who believes that his baby daughter was lost in the fire, is in charge. Wiggs' synergistic blending of historical authenticity, complex multifaceted characters, and riveting plot makes for an exquisite romance. Diana Tixier Herald

A FANTASTIC CONCLUSION TO A TERRIFIC SERIES
By Maudeen Wachsmith
Talk about one series I hate to see end! I've been enjoying Susan Wiggs's books for years, and have loved her series, but this one has topped them all. It was so enjoyable on so many levels it's hard to know where to begin.
A heroine who's a bookseller and a feminist - Lucy is a heroine any reader would be hard pressed not to identify with. There's one particular scene where Lucy is talking to one of her customers who is disparaging dime novels without ever having read one that had me sitting up and cheering. (Does this sound familiar, romance readers?) She even recommends books which will be vaguely familiar to romance fans.
A hero who is bitter and lonely but as gentle and as nice as they come and who wants to put his daughter's needs first - that's Rand. He's a successful banker who has had some terrible tragedies in life including the loss of his infant daughter in the Chicago Fire and then his wife leaving him, the palatial home he built for her remaining mostly empty.
What reader won't be able to have their heart simply torn from their chest with Lucy's decision to give up custody of her daughter? Sure, Rand is Maggie's biological father, but Lucy has cared for her for the past five years and is the only mother Maggie has known.
And prepare for a beautifully-written scene from Maggie's point of view as she meets her father for the first time in five years.
This is a fitting conclusion to the Chicago Fire Trilogy which began with THE HOSTAGE , and then THE MISTRESS. THE FIREBRAND stands alone just fine, but I believe readers will enjoy THE FIREBRAND even more having read the first two books in the series - and particularly one scene which is told from different points of view in each of the books.
Well done, thanks Susan for another terrific Series!

Great Leads...
By L. Ponder
Lucy Hathaway saves a baby, the night of the Chicago fire. Unable to find out anything about the baby's parents, she adopts her, and names her Maggie.
Rand Higgins is horribly injured and disfigured, the night of the Chicago fire. His wife leaves him and Chicago, and he believes his child, Christine, is dead.
Five years later, Lucy owns a bookstore, The Firebrand, and nees a loan. She meets with a banker, Rand, and discovers the child she has adopted is his Christine. She decides to tell Rand of her discovery, in spite of her deep love for Maggie. The dilemma between the two, Lucy and Rand--deciding what's best for Maggie.
Lucy is a suffragist, a fighter for equal rights for all, especially women. Because of his past, Rand has a natural, and understandable distrust for women. In my mind, Ms. Wiggs bringing these two disparate people together in a believable way, is what makes this book so good. Neither character's true self is sacrificed to bring this book to a HEA for all involved. Lucy, Rand, and Maggie are wonderful characters. And even secondary characters like Rand's grandmother, Lucy's mother seem to walk off the pages of THE FIREBRAND.
My only complaint with THE FIREBRAND would be that I, personally, would have liked to read more about the romance and relationship between Rand and Lucy. And, I do prefer books with a little more sensuality. Otherwise, this book was perfect.

"The Fire Brand" is a great finale!
By Kay Lewis
Loved the first two in this series, "The Hostage" and "The Mistress", and this, the third and final novel in the group I believe is my personal favorite. Hated to see the last page come up in each book in this triology of events that began with the castastrophic Chicago fire of 1871.
"The Fire Brand" is the name of the bookstore that the unconventional, independent Lucy Hathaway opens after the fire has taken the life of her father and his assets, leaving her mother and herself almost destitute. The bookstore is not only her livelihood but her dream of making her own way in life. Despite what the fire took from her, it gave her something she never expected to have in life. A baby literally fell into her arms! During the fire as she was trying to get herself to safety, she happened to look up toward a window in a burning hotel in time to see a bundle dropped from the window just before that floor was engulfed in flames. The bundle of securely tied pillows and blankets held a baby in the core of what was obviously meant to be protective wrapping for the infant. Unable to find the parents of the child, she took her into her home, her heart and raised her with all the love a child could have.
Five years later fate brings Lucy, her child and Rand Higgins, the natural father of rumbunctious 5 year old Maggie together and leaves a nest of confusion for all concerned in their attempt to resolve who will raise the adorable, precocious little girl.
Life has been difficult for both Lucy and Rand, and with quite a bit of conflict involved in their attempts to come to an agreeable solution that will keep both of them involved in Maggie's life they find more happiness then they ever thought possible.
Suan Wiggs is a master at combining history with fiction and an extra large helping of romance together for a spectacular read! I wish there were more novels to look forward to in this series.

Cold Case, by Kate Wilhelm

With no strong evidence, attorney Barbara Holloway's legal instincts are all she has. If they can't lead her to the truth, her client will die. But if she succeeds, her own life will be on the line.

Controversial author and scholar David Etheridge is not the kind of company an aspiring politician wants to keep. But ambitious state senator Robert McCrutchen has a history with Etheridge--a history he's desperately trying to keep under wraps.

Twenty-two years ago, while attending the University of Oregon, both men were investigated in the death of a young coed, but the case was never solved. A circle of secrecy guaranteed it. But the old stories resurface when Etheridge returns to Eugene, Oregon. Tied to their past, McCrutchen is his grudging host--until the senator is found shot dead.

Now Etheridge is back where he was more than two decades ago--suspected of murder. Only this time, with the cold case reopened, he's facing a double charge. And Etheridge might not be so lucky again.

Barbara must battle the prosecution and the court of public opinion, which has already tried and convicted Etheridge for both murders. As the pressure mounts, Barbara ties the past and present together, risking her own life to protect a client and preserve justice.

From Publishers Weekly
In Wilhelm's sluggish 11th Barbara Holloway legal thriller (after A Wrongful Death), controversial academic David Etheridge returns to his hometown of Eugene, Ore., to lecture on his latest anti-everything book. But when his college nemesis, Sen. Robert McCrutchen, is shot dead, David is fingered for the hit—and for the 22-year-old unsolved murder of co-ed Jill Storey, David's assumed former lover and the assumed unrequited love interest of McCrutchen. Enter Barbara Holloway, whom David hires as counsel, just before an unknown assailant beats David within inches of his life. The story hinges on a meager twist—Jill may have been a lesbian—that's learned early in the investigation and, despite its implications, fails to catalyze deeper discoveries. The plot stalls, and Barbara spends most of the book rooting around in the dark for clues. A lengthy block of exposition delivers a tidy ending to one of the weaker entries in this popular series. Amy McCrutchen thought it was the first time she had ever really fallen in love. At fourteen, she had been in love before, but not for real. Billy Cook in fourth grade, then Johnny Stillman in sixth, but they didn't count, not like this. She and her best friend Greta had hovered on the outskirts of the big party that night, watching, commenting, giggling at the silliness of the celebrants, most of them in Robert's graduating class. Earlier, they had been banished from the family room, where the furniture had been pushed back against the walls for dancing. But they could still see everything, and they could help themselves to the plentiful food spread out on the dining-room table.

Earlier Amy had pointed out those she knew. "That's Chloe," she had said, indicating a girl in a red tank top and skintight white pants. "She and Robert are engaged. They're going to announce it tonight."

"She's pretty," Greta said.

Amy examined Chloe appraisingly. She had dark hair, almost black, straight, and halfway down her back. Her pants were so tight she couldn't sit down, and she bulged a little in them. "Too fat." She spotted Jill Storey and pointed. "She's prettier."

Jill was blond and slender nearly to the point of emaciation. She wore a black sheath that clung to her torso like a sealskin and flared at the hips. Her hair was cut short and curled about her face. She was the best dancer, Amy had decided.

"Too skinny," Greta said judiciously after studying Jill, "but she is pretty. Boy, can she dance! Who's that old guy dancing? He's good, too."

"Dr. Elders. He's not a real doctor, not like my dad, just a professor. They live next door." Her father was a surgeon, and he had gone to bed an hour earlier. Amy lowered her voice to a near whisper. "Mrs. Elders has something wrong with her. Leprosy or something. Her skin peels off, and she smells bad. She doesn't come out much."

Greta grimaced. "She peels? Like a sunburn?"

"Not like that. Great big flakes of skin, with red patches. All over. Face, arms, everywhere. It's yucky."

"Gross," Greta said. "That's too gross."

"Yeah, she can't go in the sun, or where it's hot or anything. He comes over a lot, but not her. She has to be in air-conditioning all the time." Amy shuddered. "And she's real fat."

"Double gross!" Greta said. And for a time they were both silent, savoring the grossness.

They danced on the deck, helped themselves to party food and watched. And later, hot and sweaty, Amy said, "Let's sneak some beer."

Greta grinned and nodded, and they picked up glasses and made their way to the keg. Amy had half a glass and Greta was filling her own glass when Dr. Elders came out, closely followed by Amy's brother, Robert, both carrying empty glasses.

"Are you girls drinking beer?" Dr. Elders asked in a low, pained voice. "Amy, does your mother know you're drinking beer?"

Robert glared at Amy. "I told you kids to beat it, and put that beer down!" His words were a bit slurred and his voice was loud. "Get lost, brats!" Other guests had turned to look, to Amy's mortification.

Behind Robert, David Etheridge looked at her, rolled his eyes, shook his head and then winked. At that moment Amy fell in love.

Her mother walked out and said calmly, "Amy, why don't you and Greta make yourselves a sandwich and take it to your room."

Amy and Greta fled.

They had talked a long time, cursing Dr. Elders with the worst curse they could think of, that he would catch whatever it was his wife had, and that his nose would fall off. Secretly Amy wished the same fate on her brother, but she didn't say it aloud.

After Greta fell asleep, Amy was thinking dreamily of David, who had winked at her. She didn't know what color his eyes were, she realized. She had not paid attention before when she had seen him as just another one of boring Robert's stupid pals. She twisted and turned a short while, then put on a sweatshirt and jeans and cautiously made her way downstairs.

The party was a lot quieter, with piano and guitar music and a low murmur of voices the only sounds. She met no one and made her way out to the deck and beyond to a dogwood tree where she could see into the family room and hear the music but still be concealed in shadows.

There were only a few people left, gathered at the far end of the family room by the piano. The music was soft and dreamy, the spinning disco light turned off, and no one was dancing anymore. Several people were sitting on the floor; someone was sprawled on the sofa. Dr. Elders must have left, she was relieved to see. She spotted David, took a deep breath and sat down in the grass.

He would go out into the world and make a fortune, and the day she turned eighteen he would return and they would be free, run away, or maybe have a grand wedding with a diamond tiara and a ten-foot-long satin train for her, and a white tuxedo for him.

The kitchen lights dimmed, the patio door opened and her mother came out, paused a moment, then went to the far side of the deck, beyond the light from the family room and kitchen. Amy could not see her any longer, and she didn't think her mother could see her, either.

Her butt was getting cold and wet, she realized, shifting slightly, then she stopped moving. Jill Storey came out to the deck. She had a dark sweater over her shoulders. She passed the pale light to the family room and went to the railing on the side, where she became a dim figure. A lighter flared, then the glowing tip of a cigarette.

After a moment Robert followed Jill out, and Amy knew she was doomed. She was close enough for Robert to see her if he happened to glance her way. She scrunched down lower and pulled her sweatshirt up around her face.

Robert's voice, while not as loud as it had been yelling at her and Greta, was still quite audible as he drew near Jill.

"Hey, Jill baby, let's duck out of this, go up to my room for a little while."

"No way. Take Chloe," Jill said.

"Nah. You're the one, honey. We hit it off just right. Don't we?"

"I said no. Leave me alone."

"Not what you said a couple of weeks ago," Robert said.

"That was then. This is now."

"How 'bout you pay me back my twenty-five bucks, then? Take it out in trade?"

"You already took it out in trade. You got what you wanted, and so did I. Leave me alone," Jill said angrily.

Amy, freeing her eyes of the sweatshirt, watched the scene, frozen. Robert was slurring his words even more than he had been earlier, and he was swaying. He caught on to the rail near Jill. She moved back a step or two and he made a grab for her arm.

"You bitch! You just wanted the dough? Is that what you're telling me? You were in it for a lousy twenty-five? All smiles and come on, big boy, spread your legs for a lousy twenty-five. How many others? Spending money? Mad money? You liked it just fine then."

Jill's voice was furious as she said, "Liked it? Liked it! You disgust me, you and all the others. Stick it in, that's all you think of ! Stick it in anything that moves. Think with your prick, that's all you know. Well, listen to me, you filthy ape. I don't need you now. I was going to be evicted, now I'm not. So beat it! Leave me alone!"

Amy drew in her breath sharply.

David had stepped out onto the deck. He crossed to stand close to Jill and Robert. "When you're ready to leave, I'll drive you home in your car," he said to Jill. "You're in no shape to drive tonight."

"So that's it," Robert cried. "You've got yourself a new patsy! I saw him pass you a key! You have the key to his apartment, don't you? You're moving in with him?" He was facing her, but his words were aimed at David as he said, "What's the deal for a key to an apartment—twenty-four-hour access? She'll keep her legs spread day and night for a whole apartment?"

"Robert, shut your mouth," David said in a low voice. "Go duck your head in cold water."

"You going to make me?"

Robert swung at David, who moved aside, deflected Robert's arm and sent him sprawling off the deck into a bush. With a cry, Jill ran to the kitchen door and entered. David watched Robert right himself and stumble to his feet, then he turned and reentered the house.

Amy realized that her mother had risen, taken a few steps toward the small group at the other end of the deck, then stopped and sunk back down onto a chaise, again out of sight. Amy pulled her sweatshirt up over her eyes again and hugged her arms around herself, shivering. It was a long time before her mother rose and went inside, and Amy didn't dare move until after that.

The next day, Sunday, the news spread like a grass fire—Jill Storey's body had been found that morning outside her apartment, partly hidden in shrubs. She had been strangled.

"I think the worst is over," Barbara Holloway said, standing at her office window. Shelley and Maria were at the matching window, all three watching a wind-battered tree across the street. Although it was still raining, sheets of rain were no longer racing down the street. The tree appeared safe now, but the street looked like a river, with wavelets surging up over the curb. The power had gone off half an hour earlier and, according to the radio reports, damage was extensive throughout the county.

"Another storm of the century," Shelley said. "Never mind that it's the third such in the past few years. I'm going to call Alex for a damage report."

She hurried out to her own office, with Maria following to call home, and Barbara hit the speed button for Darren's office at the rehabilitation clinic. She got voice mail, left a brief "we're okay" message, then called her father.

"I'm fine," Frank said, sounding grumpy. "The yard's an unholy mess, and Norton's poplar tree is in the middle of the street. How are you fixed for lanterns at your place?"

"On my way to check any minute," she said. "I'll round up lanterns and candles. I imagine the clinic is using the generator, and Darren will probably be there all night. Todd went to his mother's house after school. He called a while ago. So we're all right. I guess you're marooned for a bit, aren't you?"

Across town, Chloe McCrutchen hung up her phone after speaking with Mildred Ochs. Chloe wa...

Latest but not the best
By Linda Pagliuco
Barbara Holloway is a brilliant defense attorney with little stomach for the sorts of maneuvers required to attain acquittal. When she does accept a case, it always takes a lot out of her, both physically and emotionally. At this point, she's in a great relationship, the personal part of her life in order. But her latest case, a double murder trial, involving 2 victims who died 22 years apart, in the vicinity of her client, is about to shake her up professionally. For Barbara, though she believes in the innocence of the accused, can't get a handle on an effective way to counter the charges.

Cold Case is set up well enough to build interest, and the finale is also adequately satisfying. What the heart of the book lacks, however, is a sense of urgency and danger, consisting mainly of long passages of "woe is me, what are we going to do" teeth gnashing by Barbara and her team. To the author's credit, she did not resort to any DNA/forensic rabbits in the hat, bringing Barbara to her solution with good old fashioned evidence examination. All in all, this is a lackluster outing for the Holloways.

enjoyable regional whodunit
By A Customer
Over two decades ago in Eugene, Oregon, someone murdered teenager Jill Storey. The police and much of the small town believed that either teens David Etheridge or Robert McCrutchen killed her. However, no evidence was found and the case went cold.

Twenty-two years later, David an author returns to his hometown and ends up staying with Robert who is a senator and his wife. Soon afterward, someone murders Robert. The police once again suspect David, believing they have motive, means and definitely opportunity. He, knowing that he is a person of interest, hires attorney Barbara Holloway to represent him. She and her team begin to investigate the two homicides with each clue making the case stronger against her client.

The latest Holloway investigative thriller is an enjoyable regional whodunit starring an eccentric Oregonian cast, but not quite as powerful as most of the previous tales (see SLEIGHT OF HAND and A WRONGFUL DEATH). With humor to somewhat abating the tension, fans will appreciate Barbara's efforts to find proof that someone else committed the recent homicide although she and the audience begin to believe David is guilty until a beating occurs. Her digging means no time to mount a defense and takes away from the overall story line as she gets nowhere for much of the novel. Still COLD CASE is a fine Holloway tale.

Wonderfully entertainin
By Tina
I use to read Kate Wilhelm all the time and for some unkown reason, I stopped reading her.

I am glad that I picked up Cold Case because this book features Wilhelm at her best.

In Cold Case, we find Barbara Holloway is back again. I really like this character as I always found her to be extremely savy and smart and quite entertaining at the same time! So, she is always a joy to read.

Cold Case takes a look at a case that was extremely delicate - 22 years ago - hence the title Cold Case. Holloway finds herself with a new murder on her hands - except that the victim was once accused of murder himself - Holloway will find herself caught up in the middle of both the Cold Case and the new murder and must beat the clock in order to save the accused who may or may not be guilty.

I loved the fact that the author did such a great job of joining the past and the present - and she does it in a clever way - without making it feel as though it is "forced" or plot oriented.

Great pacing as always - this is never a problem with Wilhelm's novels - she is a master at keeping the story moving.

I really, really enjoyed this one.
