One night, New York FBI agent Aiden Mahoney receives a visitor in a dream—an old friend named Richard Highsmith. The very next day he's sent to Sleepy Hollow because Richard's gone missing there.

Maureen—Mo—Deauville now lives in the historic town and works with her dog, Rollo, to search for missing people. She's actually the one to find Richard…or more precisely his head, stuck on a statue of the legendary Headless Horseman.

Mo and Aiden, a new member of the Krewe of Hunters, the FBI's unit of paranormal investigators, explore both past and present events to figure out who betrayed Richard, who killed him and now wants to kill them, too. As they work together, they discover that they share an unusual trait—the ability to communicate with the dead. They also share an attraction that's as intense as it is unexpected…if they live long enough to enjoy it!

It was a horrific sight.

And, bizarrely enough, one that might be missed, at least in Sleepy Hollow. Here, and in the surrounding villages and towns, images and effigies of headless horsemen were common.

A pole had been stuck into a man's likeness created from wood and stuffing and plaster and cotton—a likeness that ended at the neckline. Right where the Revolutionaryera jacket and shirt left off.

And Richard Highsmith's severed head had been stuck onto the pole.

It was bloody, and the midlength, salt-and-pepper hair was matted and dark. The face might once have held character and dignity.

Maureen Deauville stood with her enormous wolfhound, Rollo, and stared at it. For a moment, she felt as if she'd been teleported back to medieval times. The breeze rustled through the trees and the sounds of traffic from the road seemed to fade. She might have been standing in distant woods, viewing the results of a gruesome execution carried out by some long-ago government.

In reality, she was on the street that bordered a cemetery to the west. There were houses here—some very old, some not so old—and a few businesses, including Tommy Jensen's Headless Horseman Hideaway Restaurant and Bar. His effigy of the headless horseman, a good seven or so feet high, lurked on the roadside to attract clientele.

And it had been used to display the head.

The parking lot was filled with cars, mainly cop cars. It was barely 7:00 a.m. At least seven uniformed officers were there, ready to handle crowd control and keep the few cars on the street moving along. A crime scene unit van had just arrived and jerked to a halt, followed seconds later by the ambulance from the morgue.

They'd begun the search for the missing man that morning, just half an hour earlier.

"You've done it. You and Rollo have done your jobs," Lieutenant Purbeck said with a sigh. "Not what we expected to find, or hoped to find, but…" He paused. "But that's part of Richard Highsmith, anyway."

The blood was congealing. It had dripped over the crisp collar and seeped onto the shoulders of the white cotton shirt and blue jacket on the should-have-been-headless mannequin. The eyes were open in death, and crows and blackbirds lurked, waiting to attack. Even as Maureen stared up at the atrocity before her, a crow zeroed in, aiming for the soft tissue.

"We've got to get that down!" One of the cops, a young man, new to the force—Bobby Magill, Maureen thought—groaned, sounding ill.

"Anyone who's going to puke, get the hell away from the crime scene! Let's get it covered!" Lieutenant Purbeck shouted.

At Maureen's side, Rollo gave one of his deep, bone-jarring barks. Maureen quickly soothed the large wolfhound. "Good job, Rollo," she murmured. Men scrambled, as Lieutenant Purbeck said, "I want a step…a block…something. We need an investigator up there. And crowd control! Someone arrange detours until we've got all this out of here. And I sure as hell don't want anyone around gaping and snapping shots for Twitter and Facebook!"

Gina Mason, head of the forensics unit, stepped forward and yelled at them. "Get the birds away! And then get some kind of screening set up. We have to preserve the scene! Can we get rigging and tarps around the—the— Around it! Everyone will be breathing down my neck for trace evidence and I'll have to say we were defeated by a crow!"

Dr. Aaron Mortenson from the coroner's office had arrived, as well. He got out of his car and walked over to Gina.

"Let the photographer up there first, and then I'll take a quick look. I won't disturb anything until you've had a chance to get what you need," he told her.

Mortenson was middle-aged, trim in appearance and always reserved. He saw Mo and Rollo. To her surprise, he nodded to her with something that was almost a smile. A silent acknowledgment that said, Work well done. He sighed loudly. "Since it's so early, thankfully no four-year-old saw this and realized the head was real. God knows— Halloween. It might well have taken hours even in broad daylight before anyone saw that it wasn't just part of some grisly display."

She nodded solemnly back at him.

Lieutenant Purbeck came to stand near Mo, allowing the technicians and the medical examiner the space they needed.

He set a hand on her shoulder.

"I'm okay," she assured him.

Then she turned away, grasping Rollo's collar and taking him with her. He'd done his job well. Too well. This was one search she wished she could've sat out. Sooner or later, someone would have really looked at the headless horseman that stood outside the entrance to Tommy's place. The police hadn't really needed her services. She actually wished that they hadn't called her; this one was a little too close to home.

"Why my horseman?" Mo heard. She turned.

Tommy Jensen, an old friend—and owner of the Headless Horseman Hideaway Restaurant and Bar—had been allowed through. The restaurant didn't open until eleven; his staff didn't even arrive until nine or nine-thirty. But, she realized, looking at his grim face as he stared at the scene, it was his horseman and his parking lot. She figured he'd been called in.

He looked at her bleakly and tried to smile. "Of all the horsemen in all the world…"

Mo touched his arm. He was her senior by a few years; she'd known him since she was ten or so. She recalled that the older girls had often teased him because he'd been a big, awkward kid. He still liked to moan about his dating life. But now that they were all older and presumably more mature, the group she'd hung out with growing up now frequented his restaurant. It was her favorite hangout when friends met up at night for dinner, coffee or drinks. He always took care of them.

He'd been born and bred in the area and was a true lover of the Hudson Valley. He'd owned the restaurant for about two years and it was charming, offering pool tables, dart boards and an "enchanted forest" for young children when their families came for lunch.

Purbeck turned to him. "What time did you leave last night, Tommy?"

Tommy was startled—as if he'd just realized he might be a suspect. "About 2:30 a.m. And I didn't leave alone. I left with Abby Cole. We cleaned up, locked the place and were together the whole time. I drove her home."

"And you didn't see anything? Anything at all unusual?" Purbeck demanded.

Tommy shook his head. "Sir, I'm telling you, we were worn-out. Halloween's coming, you know? We're busy. We had to announce last call and practically shove people out of their chairs. When we finally took off, my car was the only one in the lot and."

"And?"

"I didn't even glance at the horseman, to be honest. But, like I said, we'd been busy. We had a lot of visitors and people were talking at their cars before leaving. They'd been to the attractions, the haunted houses, the storytelling, all that. So.I'm not a cop, but I don't see how this could have been done until the wee hours of the morning."

Purbeck released a sigh. "Call your people. We're going to have this area closed off for the next five hours or so."

"The poor guy! I feel really bad about this." Tommy frowned. "But why did it have to be in front of my place? Oh, Lord, will anyone ever come here again?" he asked, his tone dismayed.

"They'll flock in—to see where the head of Richard Highsmith was found," Purbeck said dryly. "You can open, but not until dinner." He paused, glancing at the scene. "I'm giving my crime scene techs a good five hours. Until then, the crime scene tape stays up. Oh, and, make sure I can get hold of you."

Tommy looked at Mo. "Don't leave town, huh?" he said. Then he looked back at Purbeck. "I don't leave town often, sir, so no worries there. Can I go home?"

"For now. Tell Abby we'll be talking to her and the staff," Purbeck added.

Tommy waved as he turned to leave. Then he stopped. "Mo, can you come by later? He could be right about business being okay—or people could be so creeped out, they won't come anymore."

"I'll come by, Tommy," Mo promised. "I'm sure you'll be okay."

She wished she believed her own words. But talking to him, encouraging him, was at least keeping him from seeing the head spiked on his effigy of the headless horseman.

Lieutenant Robert Purbeck walked over to her. "Mo, you can go, if you like. We'll take it from here." He sounded gruff and uncomfortable. "You and Rollo were dead-on, as usual." He paused, rolling his eyes at his unfortunate choice of words. "That came out wrong, but this whole thing is just…bad. Very bad. Are you all right?"

Was she all right?

No one there was all right. But she wasn't a cop or a forensic expert; she was Rollo's owner. She was an "expert consultant." And, sadly, she'd seen the very bad before.

Sometimes, more often than not, she and Rollo found those who were still living. She could proudly say that many a time they had helped save lives. Not today.

"Yes, I'm fine," she assured Purbeck. "But it's not a picture I'll forget."

"None of us will," he murmured.

She squared her shoulders and patted Rollo's massive head. "We've found terrible and tragic things before, Lieutenant. And we've survived them."

Purbeck was a tall, muscled man in his late fifties. He could be a tough cop, but he was also a sort of father figure to her, and his expression was one of parental concern. "We just discovered a head on a pole, Maureen. Here. In Sleepy Hollow. That's damned…scary and disturbing."

All she could do was agree. "I'm worried about you," he said next. "You live alone."

"I have Rollo."

Rollo was huge. Standing on his hind legs, he was nearly six feet tall and dwarfed most men. He was one of the largest of his breed she had ever seen.

"Rollo, yes. He might well scare the common car thief," Purbeck said. "And, yeah, he's great at what he does. He's not a bloodhound, not even a scent hound, he's a sight hound, but he's always right on the money. I guess dogs have it over us." He shrugged. "And he's one hell of a companion. But, Mo, whoever did this is sick. Really sick. I'm no expert on nutcases—and I don't think I have to be. This is—" He paused, searching for a better word. Apparently, he didn't find one. "Sick," he repeated.

Maureen nodded again. "I…I would hope that someone suffering from a serious mental problem, an illness, would be the only person who could do something so horrible," she said. She gestured around her. "Most people come here because of Washington Irving and his short story 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.' They're intrigued by it, they love history—and, well, they just want to see the place. But with this… Someone's turning it into an obscene joke."

"Yeah. Some whacked bastard out there has taken the work of the first American man of letters and twisted it into something tragic. I'm going to stop it. I refuse to let any more of this happen in our town. I'm going to track down whoever committed such a…such a dreadful crime, such a travesty—" Purbeck broke off. "I will get this bastard!" he vowed.

Maureen placed one hand on his arm. People here were extremely proud of Washington Irving, and of course the tourist trade that sustained many businesses in the village of Sleepy Hollow and in Tarrytown was due to Irving's time-tested stories. She knew that herself. Like many who found their way to Sleepy Hollow, her parents were Irish New Yorkers who had fallen in love with the Hudson Valley. They hadn't purchased property in the area, though. Instead, they'd rented every time they'd come for the summer or other holidays. She'd been the one to set down permanent roots here, buying a cottage down the Hudson from Irving's Sunnyside. It had belonged to an older couple, friends of her parents, who'd gone to Arizona because of the husband's severe asthma; they and Maureen had made a deal that was amenable to both parties, and she'd become a full-time resident. Her parents, too, had decided to retire to Scottsdale, joking that they'd never again have to shovel snow.

While she still loved the city—there was, truly, nothing like New York in the world—she'd needed to get away from the nonstop energy, the frequent chaos. And while she loved many places around the country, she'd never seen anything quite as beautiful as the Hudson Valley. Yes, areas off a few of the main roads seemed remote and very dark. But she'd bought what she considered the perfect home in Sleepy Hollow.

"And Richard Highsmith," Purbeck said. "Lord, why?"

Neither of them had an answer for that.

Mo was hardly an expert on politics, but she'd admired Highsmith. He was that rare politician willing to stand and fight alone. He hadn't adhered to any political party; he was an independent. He seemed to have taken the best policies and beliefs from everyone else out there. People loved him. He had plans for fiscal responsibility and he also had plans that focused on making equality part of the fabric of America.

Yes, he was loved.

But he was also hated.

And yet.

Hated this much?

"Was someone after Mr. Highsmith specifically?" Mo murmured. "Or."

As she'd told Lieutenant Purbeck, she had to hope that only someone truly ill could have done this. Even worse—if such a thing was possible—was the chance that Richard's murder had been random, that he'd just been taken and that.

If that were true, there could be more heads on top of horsemen who should have remained headless.

She knew Purbeck was thinking along the same lines.

"While this is going on, you might want to stay with a friend or move into a hotel," Purbeck said to her.

"Lieutenant, we have no idea what's going on yet," Mo reminded him. "Highsmith was a politician. He was very likely to be voted in as New York's next mayor. He was an independent, which means that most people loved him but that he also had enemies in the major political camps. I know—I followed him and his politics. He also had plans to run for governor at some point in the future, and a lot of people here still have homes in the city and use the Valley for escape. So…it makes sense that he was speaking here."

Purbeck nodded. "Yep. He was special and he was different. But getting back to you… You're in a remote area. I don't know if Rollo, big as he is, can protect you from this kind of insanity."

"His size scares people all the time," Mo commented.

"Normal people," Purbeck agreed. He stood awkwardly for a moment, watching his officers and the crime scene technicians working. "But if you actually know the dog, he's one friendly guy."

"Don't kid yourself, Lieutenant—Rollo can be fierce!" Maureen bent down to hug the dog. He didn't exactly prove her point when he rewarded her with a sloppy kiss. One of her mom's best friends had bred Irish wolfhounds; the dogs had been special to her from the first time she'd seen them. She and Rollo were family.

An okay story but not the best in the series.
By Donna C
I requested this title from NetGalley while I was still reading the last book in the Krewe of Hunters series because Sleepy Hollow is a neat little place and I really enjoyed THE HEXED. If this book was anything like that one then I’d probably enjoy it too. It’s a fair enough assumption, I think.

Except THE BETRAYED didn’t really live up to the last book’s standards, in my opinion. While Graham’s pretty much mastered setting and Sleepy Hollow and the surrounding area were their own characters within the story, they were so vivid, I felt the interactions of the protagonists was gawky and awkward and the dialogue just subpar. The over use of the exclamation point was extremely distracting and a lot of the time unnecessary. The actions in THE BETRAYED were far more about moving from Point A to Point B without developing a whole lot of ambiance or really allowing the characters to grow at all.

Mo was a stagnant character throughout the story and while she served a major purpose in finding bodies and people as the plot unfolded she was rather wooden. Not unlikeable but she didn’t offer up anything that I would like either so let’s just say I’m ambivalent about her. Not the greatest place to be. As for Aiden he seemed to be a copy of Rocky from THE HEXED, right down to needing to see Mo to the door, protecting her, the sex, making breakfast in her house, pretty much everything except the pertinent backstory. Although Aiden did have his connections to the area, just like Rocky did so there was that. The relationship between Mo and Aiden developed in much the same way as Rocky’s and Devin’s did so there was little excitement there for me. To add to that Aiden was a dick to Mo in the beginning for no good reason except to keep his distance from her for emo reasons. That didn’t make much sense.

I’ve noticed that Graham, from the two books I’ve read, has a bad habit of introducing a condom into a sex scene, neither of the characters actually having one, the female saying she’s on birth control, it makes things all better, and the sex commences. I overlooked it in THE HEXED but now that it’s cropped up again in THE BETRAYED I can’t ignore it. Please. If you insist on bringing a condom and various other methods of birth control into a fictional sex scene don’t stop at it just preventing pregnancy (the condom). These two people were strangers. You have them fumbling for a condom that doesn’t actually exist and I guess in this world birth control not only stops babies but stops STDs too. Yeah, no. Stop it. Either remove the reference altogether, have them stop sex because they have no idea where each other has been (for the sake of realism, since we’re talking condoms), or have one be available. Don’t, well, half-cock it.

I found myself very distracted while reading this one and I didn’t feel as invested in the story as I did the last. Aside from the setting, the stark formulaic similarities between characters and plots of the two books it was kind of hard to get invested in the same rehashed story under the guise of an entirely new book. To be honest it makes me a little weary to dive into the rest of this series if these last two books are any indication of the repetition I’m going to encounter. I’d like more of the Krewe as a whole, their beginnings and how the constant characters were put together. This being book number fourteen I doubt I’m going to get any of that going forward. Still, I’m going to go back. Graham loves her settings and she does an incredible amount of research to make them come alive. I lived in Connecticut for 29 years and I never once went to Sleepy Hollow (or Salem, for that matter) and she’s gotten me to put those places on my list for when I make it back there. Because I have to. Because I’m missing that quintessential New England feel and what better places to get it?

I still want to read this series. I do. But I won’t lie. My buzz has been killed a little at the copy THE BETRAYED was of THE HEXED in terms of plot and characters. The fact that I’m picking up a formula off of two books doesn’t bode well but I won’t give up yet. I like what I read here enough to keep at it.

Not Good
By Fallen3
I hate that I didn't like this book. I always look forward to the Krewe Series, & preorder. They are always at least four star books to me. I just couldn't get into this one. The hero was so flat. He is part of the Krewe group and was once able to talk to the dead but after a bad experience, he decides to ignore that side of himself. Well then why the heck did he join that group?!?! That's what they are all about!!! He was stand offish with the h until about 60% of the book. He was kind of a butt really. The H & h hardly spend anytime time together in the first half of the book. At about 60% they finally share a short kiss. At around 71% he's telling her he's falling in love with her. Smh...That would have been fine if they had actually spent more time together in the first half of the book. He spent just as much time with Debbie, the stripper. He also spent more time thinking about how beautiful her face was, how sexy her body was, & how kind Debbie was then he did Mo, the heroine. For me that is a huge no, no. Even though he wasn't doing it in a "I want to get with her way".
I just didn't care for him. He was flat, expressionless, passionless. The one sex sence was very short. They never talked about his past. No bonding moments that make you feel like they are building a stronger conection. This is just not what I like in my H & h.
I liked Mo, but just felt like she really wasn't a big part of the story. Just one of many, & didn't stand out as a heroine.
There was no action. No dangerous feelings, no build up.
The reason for the killings was silly to me, & what was done to the bodies was for shock factor for the book only. It was explained why they were murdered, but no reasoning as to why they were displayed the way they were.
I liked the cemetery details that were in the book, but found the details for the rest of the town forgettable. I didn't get that hunted feeling I usually get from The Krewe Series books.

I would definitely read the next in the series because they are my favorite by this author, and are usually a sure thing.

Suspenseful with Constant Twists & Turns
By Tia Bach
Aiden Mahoney, a New York FBI agent, has a dream of an old friend--a politician named Richard Highsmith--and suddenly finds himself assigned to his murder investigation and sent back to Sleepy Hollow, recruited by the Krewe of Hunters, a uniquely talented group within the FBI.

Maureen "Mo" Deauville, along with her dog, has a knack for finding missing people. Sometimes alive, but lately too many have been dead. She finds Richard in a grotesque and very Sleepy Hollow way. More deaths follow.

Can Maureen and Aiden find who's responsible?

I really loved The Hexed, another book in the Krewe of Hunters series. Both books had a similar setup. Two characters who have unique gifts get thrown together and find themselves attracted to one another. In addition, both books had present day murder mysteries with the added allure of an older paranormal story (Salem witches in The Hexed and the Sleepy Hollow legend here).

While this book was just as fast-paced and interesting, I felt less connected. The story seemed rushed in the beginning. Since I'd read a previous book in the series, it didn't throw me off too badly, but I could imagine other readers would be a bit lost for a while. I also didn't feel connected to the love story here, although I like both the characters individually. Maybe, it's simply that the concept--since it was so similar--felt less new and exciting this time around.

With all that being said, it's a suspenseful read. I never quite figured out who did it, thanks to constant twists and turns and intrigue. If you enjoy a good murder mystery and like the idea of a paranormal element thrown in, definitely pick this one up. You will certainly be entertained.

16 Lighthouse Road (A Cedar Cove Novel), by Debbie Macomber

Olivia Lockhart
Cedar Cove, Washington

Dear Reader, You don't know me yet, but in a few hours that's going to change.

You see, I'm inviting you to my home and my town of Cedar Cove because I want you to meet my family, friends and neighbors. Come and hear their stories—maybe even their secrets!

I have to admit that my own secrets are pretty open. My marriage failed some years ago, and I have a rather…difficult relationship with my daughter, Justine. Then there's my mother, Charlotte, who has plenty of opinions and is always willing to share them.

Here's an example. I'm a family court judge and she likes to drop in on my courtroom. Recently I was hearing a divorce petition. In my mother's view, young Cecilia and Ian Randall hadn't tried hard enough to make their marriage work—and I actually agreed. So I rendered my judgment: Divorce Denied.

Well, you wouldn't believe the reaction! Thanks to an article by Jack Griffin, the editor of our local paper (and a man I wouldn't mind seeing more of), everyone's talking.

Cedar Cove—people love it and sometimes they leave it, but they never forget it!

See you soon…

Olivia

Amazon.com Review
Perennial favorite Debbie Macomber does what she does best in 16 Lighthouse Road, introducing fans to the scenic Pacific Northwest town of Cedar Cove, Washington, and its panoply of characters, including family court judge Olivia Lockhart who makes news when she denies the divorce petition of Cecilia and Ian Randall. Decreeing that the young couple had not tried hard enough to make their relationship work following the tragic death of their newborn daughter, Olivia's decision brings her to the attention of recent Cedar Cove arrival, newspaper editor Jack Griffin. And Jack's attentions are not entirely unwelcome for the long-divorced Olivia. In addition to her continued involvement in Cecilia and Ian's ongoing negotiations, Olivia's life is further complicated by her mother, Charlotte, her daughter, Justine, and her best friend, Grace, as they struggle with the difficult situations life tosses their way. Charlotte becomes enmeshed in trying to solve a mystery left to her by a mute stroke victim she befriends just before he dies. Justine has found the perfect man for her, one who shares her ambitions and thoughts on relationships, but why does she keep thinking about the boy she knew in high school who has grown into quite a man? And Grace's husband, Dan, has disappeared--again--and Grace has no idea where he is and when or if he'll be back. The multiple story lines and numerous relationships make reading at times challenging, but Macomber fans, old and new, will stand up and cheer as the prolific author lodges her protest against the disposable personal relationships all too common today. --Alison Trinkle

From Publishers Weekly
As a family court judge, Olivia Lockhart has dealt with numerous divorce suits but none as peculiar as Cecilia and Ian Randall's. Before the young couple was married the year before, Cecilia and Ian signed a prenuptial agreement stating their marriage would last a lifetime, but now, after the tragic death of their infant daughter, the two wish to rescind the agreement. Sensing that Cecilia and Ian are still in love, Olivia lets her heart guide her decision, and denies their petition. Olivia's decision makes headlines in The Cedar Cove Chronicle and earns her the admiration of the paper's editor, Jack Griffin, a newcomer to the small Washington town. While Jack courts Olivia, and Ian and Cecilia try to repair their marriage, Olivia's daughter is forced to decide whether she should marry a man whom she doesn't love; Olivia's best friend grows frantic over the disappearance of her husband; and Olivia's mother befriends a stroke patient who harbors a secret he would share if he could speak. Despite the novel's fragmented structure, readers will warm to its endearing characters. Prolific Macomber (Thursdays at Eight, etc.) is known for her honest portrayals of ordinary women in small-town America, and this tale cements her position as an icon of the genre. (Sept.)Forecast: A national print advertising campaign and a Northwest author tour scheduled to coincide with the publication of Macomber's latest offering will boost sales, and a rosy real-estate cover will increase the book's appeal to its target readership.

Good read, but leaves you wanting more!
By J Morgan
16 Lighthouse Road is a unique compilation of stories about friends and acquaintances of Olivia Lockhart, Family Court judge, in the Pacific Northwest town of Cedar Cove, Washington. With her usual writing skill, Debbie Macomber takes chords of real life circumstances (divorce, a child's death, alcoholism, strained familial relationships, disappearing spouses, and military service separation) and entwines them with love, hope, and reconciliation. Unfortunately, all of them can't be fully developed in one 377 page paperback.
Macomber paints wonderful and evocative word pictures of the Washington landscape and the personalities of her characters. The dialogue and honest interaction of the characters draws you immediately into the storylines and keeps you reading in spite of the fragmented structure of the book.
Ian and Cecilia Randall, the young newlyweds struggling with the death of a child and separation because of his Navy career, appear in her courtroom. Jack Griffin, newly arrived editor of the Cedar Cove Chronicle, and love interest. Her busybody mother Charlotte Jefferson, who collects recipes at funeral wake. Tom Harding, stoke victim and mysterious new resident of Cedar Cove Convalescent Home, who gives a key to her mother. Grace Sherman, the best friend whose husband keeps disappearing; and Justine, her daughter, in a relationship with a man twenty years her senior. All endearing characters that capture your heart.
Switches between the stories and her believable, engaging characters will keep you turning the pages to see how each saga ends, but you do long to spend more time with them. Or, perhaps re-visit with them in a sequel. After all, we never do learn what happened to Grace's husband!

Satisfying Introduction to Macomber's Cedar Cove Series
By Antoinette Klein
16 LIGHTHOUSE ROAD satisfies the soap-opera lover in us with a charming little town peopled with problem-ridden residents. If I had not known ahead of time this was a continuing series, I would have been disappointed that so many storylines were left dangling at the end, but knowing there are more books, I am eagerly anticipating the rest of the series.

Judge Olivia Lockhart resides in the title address and we first meet her as she denies the divorce of Cecilia and Ian Randall. The young couple, obviously deeply in love, has not dealt with their grief over losing their infant daughter and has rushed headlong into divorce proceedings. The Judge herself is a divorcee who knows what it means to lose a child and still love your ex-husband. Meanwhile, the town's new newspaper editor, a man with a secret to hide, is hotly pursuing her.

The lustiest part of the story involves Olivia's daughter Justine who is dating a man old enough to be her father while having deeply sexual feelings for a high school friend she becomes reacquainted with while planning their tenth reunion.

Olivia's friend, Grace Sherman, plays a pivotal role in the book, as the deserted wife who endures grief and humiliation before deciding life on her own is really quite pleasant.

Olivia's mother, Charlotte Jefferson, provides many comedic moments as she attempts to track down the grandson of a stroke victim she befriends.

All together, an inviting look into a friendly town where problems are encountered and overcome with the help of good neighbors and good friends.

Could have been better....
By Ratmammy
16 Lighthouse Road by Debbie Macomber
16 Lighthouse Road is a series of subplots within one book, where not one single subplot takes the lead. There are several stories found in this Macomber title. Olivia is a 50-something judge who presides over a divorce hearing and refuses to grant the divorce. The couple in question is Cecilia and Ian Randall, who have gone through their own private hell - loss of a baby which leads to their mess of a marriage.
Olivia herself is the focus of a subplot. She has been divorced for many years but has not remarried as her ex-husband has. Then, she meets Jack Griffin, newspaper editor of the local paper, and she finds herself interested. The feeling is mutual.
Another subplot is Charlotte, Olivia's mother, who is involved with many social groups including helping out at the hospital, where she meets an elderly man who cannot speak, because of a stroke.
Yet another subplot is the story of Justine, who is dating a much older man, and her mother is Olivia. She has no desire to settle down, but then starts to have conflicting emotions when she meets up again with an old high school mate, Seth.
There is nothing wrong with having several subplots in one book. The problem was that there was no main story, and the book reads like a soap opera. Debbie Macomber can write, but I have a feeling the fault here is her editor. There are repeated passages all over the book, where things could have been nicely condensed. Transitions from one scene to another are not very smooth. I would have enjoyed this book a lot better if someone had taken the time to proof read the book and do it right!
I have the second book in this series of books, 204 Rosewood Lane. I am hoping to find this book a much better edited book. There was nothing wrong with the story content of 16 Lighthouse Road. It kept my interest despite the irritating problems with the writing. Because of these problems, I will have to give the book only Three stars.

Meet Dorothy Jarrow: devotedly unsexy librarian

Buttoned-up book lover DJ is all sensible shoes, drab skirts and studious glasses. After an ill-advised spring-break-fueled fling left her mortified, she's committed to her prim and proper look. When she's hired by a rural library in middle-of-nowhere Kansas, she finally has the lifestyle to match—and she can't wait to get her admin on.

But it's clear from day one that the small-town library is more interested in circulating rumors than books. DJ has to organize her unloved library, win over oddball employees and avoid her flamboyant landlady's attempts to set her up with the town pharmacist. Especially that last part—because it turns out handsome Scott Sanderson is her old vacation fling! She is not sure whether to be relieved or offended when he doesn't seem to recognize her. But with every meeting, DJ finds herself secretly wondering what it would be like to take off her glasses, unpin her bun and reveal the inner vixen she's been hiding from everyone—including herself.

From Publishers Weekly
As charming and sunny as the summer days it describes, Morsi's librarian romance crafts the staple elements of the genre with verve and a sure hand. The details may not be terribly plausible, but neither are they treated as perfunctory. Dorothy DJ Jarrow has finally landed her dream job as the administrator of a tiny public library system in rural Kansas. The gossipy, sometimes vindictive realities of smalltown life first startle her and then steel her determination to succeed. What she can't seem to brace herself against is her landlady's son, Scott the hot guy Sanderson, a mild-mannered pharmacist with a surprising alter ego as the dirty secret from DJ's past. He doesn't remember their encounter—at least consciously. But fate, Scott's mother, and a smart terrier named Melvil Dewey Jr. will help the two renew their connection. Morsi delivers a satisfying beach read with gentle humor and quirky, vivid characters. (Sept.)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Dorothy Jarrow, aka D.J., leaves her job working for the director from hell to accept a position as director of a small Kansas library. The building, a beautiful Carnegie library, is dark, dated, and disorganized. It comes with a motley crew: Amos, the depressed bookmobile driver; James, a silent young man with Asperger’s syndrome who has an unsettling ability to disappear into the stacks; Suzy, a perky clerk; and seriously disgruntled Amelia Grundler. Fortunately, D.J. doesn’t have to worry about housing right away because the library board chair, Viv Sanderson, has offered her a room in her home. But Viv has plans for D.J. that have nothing to do with the library: Viv wants a wife for her pharmacist son, Scott. The now buttoned-up D.J., however, recognizes him as the man with whom she shared a hot, one-night stand years ago. Morsi provides lots of humor, including library-specific jokes, such as Dewey Decimal–based chapter headings (“129.9 Origin and Destiny of Individual Souls”). In this nearly perfect snapshot of a close-knit, gossipy, rural town at wheat-harvest time, former librarian Morsi once again proves that she is one of romance’s top authors. --Shelley Mosley

Ho hum
By KJ
As a librarian, I'm a sucker for reading books featuring librarians. Most of them are complete cliches. This one is no different. Only this character actually becomes the cliche on purpose to hide from the world. Understandable if you have a good reason for doing so. I'm not sure DJ does. The backstory of the main characters is revealed in random backflashes thrown in willy nilly. Their placement makes no sense whatsoever within the story. And just when the story gets to what should be the really good part filled with tension and fire and passion...the author skips ahead 8 years. Why would you skip the best part of the story? The part that is skipped...that's the part I would have wanted to read.

Starts well, but...
By Amazon Customer
Okay, here's the deal. I thought I was getting a cute librarian romance, but this story was much darker than I could ever have guessed from the cover and teaser on the back. It ended happily enough, but all of the dark aspects of the plot really kind of ruined the story for me.

TRIGGER WARNINGS: Suicide, Suicidal thoughts and intentions, Emotional abuse, Child neglect

PROS:
Librarian heroine
Interesting hero
GLBTQ characters NOT used for comic relief
A character with Asperger's
Divorced couples who behave civilly to each other
A meddling mother
A cute dog

CONS:

Suicide by a minor character (mentioned but never appeared in the book)
Rather gruesome descriptions of said character's suicide
Suicidal thoughts and intentions from another character
Child neglect
Domestic violence - emotional abuse, if not physical
Loose ends that were never really wrapped up (obnoxious librarian, library board meeting)
A sudden transition between the last chapter and the epilogue that felt disjointed

Cute build up - zero payoff
By Amazon Customer
I was most bummed by the fact that the whole book is leading up to this big reveal...and then it skips the whole thing and jumps 8 years ahead. Spoiler** I could have lived with less of that weird suicide plot of the mother's and would have liked to see more of the actual aftermath of the guy realizing who DJ really was.

We children were supposed to be asleep….

But we woke, as if in response to some silent summons. We crept to the entrances of our tents and wagons, drawn like moths to the snapping flames of the central fire and the dark, leaping shadows the strange woman cast as she danced.

There was no music. I knew there was none, but it seemed to me that music filled my head all the same as I peered around the painted flap and watched her. She whirled, scarves trailing like colorful ghosts in her wake, her hair, black as the night, yet gleaming blue in the fire's glow. She arched and twisted and spun round again. And then she stopped still, and her eyes, like shining bits of coal, fixed right on mine. Scarlet lips curved in a terrifying smile, and she crooked a finger at me.

I tried to swallow, but the lump of cold dread in my throat wouldn't let me. Licking my lips, I glanced sideways at the tents and painted wagons of my kin, and saw the other children of our band, peering out at her, just as I was. Some of my cousins were older than I, some younger. Most looked very much like me. Their olive skin smooth, their eyes very round and wide, too thickly fringed for the eyes of a boy, but lovely be yond words on little girls. Their hair was uncut, like mine, but clean and raven black.

We were Gypsies all, and proud. The dancing woman…she was a Gypsy, too. I knew that at a glance. She was one of our own.

And crooking her finger at me still.

Dimitri, older than me by three years, gave me a superior look and whispered, "Go to her. I dare you!"

Only to prove myself braver than he, I stiffened my spine and stepped out of my mother's tent, my bare feet covering the cool ground by mere inches with each hesitant step. As I crept closer, the others, taking courage in mine, began to come out, too. Slowly we gathered round the beautiful stranger like sinners come to worship at the feet of a goddess. And as we did, her smile grew wider. She beckoned us closer, a finger to her lips, and then she sat down on a log near the fire.

"Who is she?" I whispered to Dimitri, for he had joined us now, too, ashamed of himself, I thought, not to have been leading us all from the start.

"Stupid, do you know nothing? She is our aunt." He shook his head disgustedly at me, then returned his enraptured gaze to the woman. "Her name is Sarafina," he said. "She comes sometimes…though I suppose you are too young to recall her last visit. She's not supposed to be here, though. When the grown-ups find out, there will be trouble."

"Why?" I too was entranced by the mysterious stranger as she lowered herself to the log, spreading the layers of her colorful skirts around her, opening her arms to welcome the young ones who crowded closer to sit on the ground all around her. I sat closest of all, right at her feet. Never had I seen a woman so beautiful. But there was something else about her, as well. Something…unearthly. Something frightening.

And there was the way her eyes kept meeting mine. There was a secret in that black gaze—a secret I could not quite see. Something shadowed, hidden.

"Why will there be trouble?" I whispered again.

"Because! She is outcast!"

My brows drew together. I was about to ask why, but then the woman—my aunt Sarafina, whom I had never seen before in my life—began to speak. And her voice was like a song. Mesmerizing, deep, beguiling.

"Come, little ones. Oh, how I've missed you." Her gaze swept the faces of the children, the look in her eyes almost painful to see, so intense was the emotion there. "But most of you do not remember me at all, do you?" Her smile faltered. "And you, little Dante. You are…how old now?"

"Seven," I told her, my voice a mere whisper.

"Seven years," she replied with a heavy sigh. "I was here the day you were born, you know."

"No. I…didn't know."

"No matter. Oh, children, I've so much to tell you. But first…" She tugged open a drawstring sack that dangled from the sash round her waist, and from it she began to draw glorious things, which she handed around to one and all. Sweets and confections such as we had never tasted, wrapped in brightly colored paper. Shiny baubles on chains, and glittering stones of all kinds, carved into the shapes of animals and birds.

The one she gave to me was a stone of black onyx in the shape of a bat. I shivered when she placed the cold piece into my palm.

When the sack was empty and the children all quiet again, she began to speak. "I have seen so many things, little ones. Things you would not believe. I journeyed to the desert lands, and there I saw buildings as big as mountains—every stone larger than an entire Gypsy wagon! Perfect and smooth they are, and pointed at the top." She used her hands to make the shape of these wonders in the air before us. "No one knows who built them, nor when. They have been there forever, some say. Others say they were built as monuments to ancient kings…and that the bodies of those rulers still rest inside, along with treasures untold!" When our eyes widened, she nodded hard, making her raven curls dance and her earrings jangle. "I've been across the sea…to the land below, where creatures with necks as tall as… as that yew tree there, walk on stilt legs and nibble the young leaves from the tops of the trees. Yellow gold they are, and spotty! With sprouts atop their heads!"

I shook my head in disbelief. Surely she was spinning tales.

"Oh, Dante, it is true," she said. And her eyes held mine, her words for me alone, I was certain. "One day you will see these things, too. One day I will show them to you myself." Reaching down, she stroked a path through my hair and leaned close to me, whispering into my ear. "You are my very special boy, Dante. You and I share a bond more powerful even than the one you share with your own mother. Remember my words. I'll come back for you someday. When you need me, I will come."

I shivered and didn't know why.

Then I went stiff at the sound of the Grandmother's squawk. "Outcast!" she yelled, rushing from her tent and jabbing her fingers at Sarafina in the way that was said to ward off evil, the two middle fingers folded, forefinger and little one pointing straight out. She made a hissing sound when she did it, so I thought of a snake with a forked tongue snapping.

The children scattered. Sarafina rose slowly, the picture of grace, and I alone remained before her. Almost without thought, I got to my feet and turned to face the Grandmother. As if I wished to protect the lovely Sarafina. As if I could. My back was toward the woman now, and as her hands closed on my shoulders, I felt myself grow a full inch taller.

Then the Grandmother glared at me, and I thought I would shrink to the size of a sand flea.

"Can you not tolerate my presence even once every few years or so, Crone?" Sarafina asked. Her voice was no longer loving or soft or kind. It was deep and clear… and menacing.

"You've no business here!" the Grandmother said.

"But I have," she replied. "You are my family. And like it or not, I am yours."

"You are nothing. You are cursed. Be gone!"

Chaos erupted around us as mothers, awakened by the noise, dashed out of their tents and wagons, gathered their children and hurried them back inside. They acted as if a killer wolf had appeared at our campfire, rather than an outcast aunt of rare beauty, bearing exotic gifts and amazing tales.

My mother came, too. As she rushed toward me I tucked the stone bat up into my sleeve. She stopped before she reached me and met Sarafina's eyes. "Please," was all she said.

There was a moment of silence as something passed between the two women. Some message, unspoken, that left my mother's eyes sad and welling with tears.

Sarafina bent down and pressed her cool lips to my cheek. "I'll see you again, Dante. Never doubt it. But for now, go on. Go to your mamma." She gave me a gentle shove and let go my shoulders.

I walked to my mother, nearly hating her for making me leave the mysterious Sarafina before I'd had a chance to learn her secrets. She gripped my arm tightly and ran to our tent so fast that she nearly dragged me off my feet. Inside, she closed the flap and cupped my face in her hands, falling to her knees before me. "Did she touch you?" she cried. "Did she mark you?"

"Sarafina would not hurt me, Mamma. She is my aunt. She is kind, and beautiful."

But my mother seemed not to hear my words. She tipped my head to one side and the other, pushing my hair aside and searching my skin. I tired of it soon enough and tugged myself free.

"You are never to go near her again, do you hear me, Dante? If you see her, you must come to me at once. Promise me!"

"But why, Mamma?"

Her hand came across my face so suddenly I would have fallen had she not been gripping my arm with the other. "Do not question me! Promise me, Dante. Swear it on your soul!"

I lowered my head, my cheek stinging, and muttered my agreement. "I promise." I was ashamed of the tears that burned in my eyes. They came more from shock than pain. My mother's hand rarely lashed out in anger. I didn't understand why it had tonight.

She knelt now, her hands on my shoulders, her worn face close to mine. "It's a promise you must keep, Dante. You endanger your soul if you break it. Mark me well." She drew a breath, sighed, and kissed the cheek she had so recently wounded. "Now, into bed with you." She was marginally calmer, her voice nearer its normal pitch.

I was far from calm. Something had stirred my blood to night. I crawled into my bed, pulled the covers over me and let the tiny, cold stone bat drop from my sleeve into my hand. I held it, rubbed its smooth surface with my thumb, beneath the blanket where my mother could not see. Mamma watched over me for a long moment, then blew out the lamp, and curled up—not upon her own bed, but on the floor beside mine, a worn blanket her only cushion.

In the silence, I rolled toward the side of the tent and thrust a forefinger through the tiny hole I had made in the fabric, so I could watch the grown-ups round the fire long after they had sent the children to bed. I tugged the hole a little wider in the darkness. And through that tiny hole, I watched and I listened as the Grandmother, the crone of the band, the eldest and most venerated woman of the family, faced off against the most vibrantly beautiful female I had ever seen in my life.

"Why do you torment us by coming back to our midst?" the Grandmother asked, as the dancing flames painted her leathery face in orange and brown, shadows and light.

"Why? You, my own sister, ask me why?"

"Sister, bah!" The Grandmother spat on the ground.

"You are no sister to me but a demon. Outcast! Cursed!"

I shook my head in wonder. What could Sarafina mean? Sister? She could no more be the old one's sister than…than I could.

"Tell me why you come, demon! It is always the children you seek out when you return. It's for one of them, isn't it? Your wretched curse has been passed to one of them! Hasn't it? Hasn't it?"

Sarafina smiled very slowly, her face angelic and demonic all at once, and bathed in fireglow. "I come because you are all I have. I will always come back, old woman. Always. Long after you've gone to dust, I'll be coming back, bringing gifts to the little ones. Finding in their eyes and in their smiles the love and acceptance my own sister denies me. And there is nothing you can do to prevent it."

Before Sarafina turned away, she looked past the Grandmother and right into my eyes. As if she had known all along that I was there, watching her from the other side of that tiny hole in the tent. She could not have seen me. And yet, she must have. Her lips curved ever so slightly at the corners, and her mouth moved. Even though no sound emerged, I knew the word she whispered. Remember.

Then she turned, her skirts flying, and vanished into the night. I saw the trailing colors of her scarves like tails behind her for only an instant. Then the blackness of night closed in where she had been, and I saw her no more.

I lay down on my pillows, and I shivered in inexplicable dread.

It was me. My aunt had come for me. I knew it in my soul. What she wanted of me, I could not guess. How I knew it, this was a mystery. But I was certain to the core of me that she did have a reason for returning in the face of such hatred. And the reason…was me.

Slowly, slowly, the smoke from the Gypsy campfire thinned. The light thrown by the flames dulled, and the heat—so real she had sworn she could feel it on her face—went cold.

Morgan De Silva blinked out of the fantasy. She was not looking at a Gypsy campfire through the huge dark eyes of a small boy. She was sitting on the floor of a dusty attic, staring down at the time-yellowed pages of a handwritten journal, bound in leather covers so old they felt buttery-soft against her hands. The vision painted by the words that spiderwebbed across the aging pages had been vivid. It had been…real. As real as if she'd been in that Gypsy camp in the distant past, instead of on the coast of Maine in the early spring of 1997.

Morgan turned the page slowly, eager to read on….

Ambivalence.... but leaning more towards 'good'
By L. J Lewis
I can't make up my mind about this one. Parts I really really liked, other things about it... I'm not so sure about. Usually when I feel ambivalent about a novel, I end up disliking it. I think what I expected from this book was a romance, but it needs to be approached from a general vampire fiction stand point.
Morgan DeSilva is a struggling screen writer who falls in love with the vampire Dante after she reads his journals containing his life story. Thinking him a long dead mad man, she uses his story as the story line for a series of popular movies. Fast forward 5 years, Morgan is dying from her Belladonna antigen and on the brink of winning an Oscar. Dante comes to her small town in Maine, hunted by the surviving members of the DPI. He is furious to find out that Morgan has been publishing his secrets. Can he put aside his mistrust and safe Morgan?
That is plot one of the story. I thought Morgan and Dante needed to talk more, and I really didn't like Morgan. I think Maggie Shayne went overboard on making her seem like a poor little rich girl and she's plagerizing her screen plays which made her come across as basically dishonest. It seems like Dante has been completely rewritten from what we were told about him in Twilight Vows. Sure, he mentions things from Vows, but it seems more like an after thought than to explain why he is the way he is. And beware one very creepy, graphic journal entry involving Dante and a woman of loose morals. I liked plot two a lot better.
Maxine is a young woman who has a conspiracy theory for everything. One night, she goes to investigate the burning wreckage of the DPI HQ. She sees a man crawl from the burning building and picks up a disk he drops. On the disk she finds information on vampires that the DPI knows about. The next day a man calls her, threating her mother and friends if she says a word about what see saw the night before. 5 years later, she and her cop pal, Lou, find themselves tangling with the DPI agent Frank Stiles when a friend of Lou is found murdered by a vampire. The trail leads to Morgan since Dante's, the character in her movies, is identical to the DPI's file on Dante.
It's a good thing I liked this plot line better because it took up most of the book. I liked the suspicious Mad Maxie a lot better than Janet Dailey-esque Morgan. The only really creepy thing about this plot line, is Maxie's attraction to Lou who is twenty years older than she is.
This is a fast paced, fairly interesting read. I'd give 3 and half stars; however, I think more could have been done to make this story better. I think it would have been much better if Maxine had been the lead female character. Yes, I lead more toward like than dislike on this one but I hope Maggie Shayne does better in the next Twilight book. Twilight Hunger wasn't quite up to par with the rest of the series.

Bite Me!!!
By rcarey22
Maggie is definitely the Queen of vampire romances in my book. She's back again with a new installment of her Twilight series - bringing us some very interesting characters:
Dante - a vampire on a mission to discover who is the individual spilling all their secrets but ends up finding his soul mate. Will he love her or kill her?
Morgan DeSilva - a sickly screenwriter who finds a diary and falls in love the author and uses his stories to make them her own. Does she believe the dreams she's having every night or is it really happening?
Maxine Stuart - adopted daughter who owns her own company (barely keeping it afloat) with a good heart, good friends and she's in love with a cop who thinks of her as a child but Maxine perseveres. She finds out she has a connection to Morgan and is willing to do anything to save Morgan from the path she's chosen. Can she save Morgan and will her love ever be reciprocated?
Sarafina - a gypsy vampire who's trying to keep her only remaining family member close to her and no one else. Can she hold Dante or must she release him to his heart's desire?
Lou - a good cop who's always after truth and justice but doesn't want to believe the truth that's staring him in the face. Will he realize that you can't run from love?
Frank Stiles - the bad penny from the secret government agency "DPI" who keeps turning up. Will he ever give up his hatred of vampires?
The paths of all these individuals eventually cross, bringing you a story filled with courage, love, trust and a deep hatred. I love these series and am always anxiously awaiting the next release. You won't be disappointed with Twilight Hunger or any of the novels in the series (I've read them all) and you WILL savor every moment from start to finish.

This book sent me on a frenzy for her backlist!!
By MimmiB
Suffering from a rare blood disease, Morgan D'Silva has set goals for herself that she wants to hit quickly. The adopted daughter of a famous screen writer and renowned actress, she has always dreamed of being a screen writer herself. Yet tragedy has recently struck her adopted family, and not only did she lose her parents, she lost everything she knew and was familiar with because of the enormous debts they had accrued. Not knowing exactly where to start, she takes an offer from a close family friend to stay in a recently purchased older home. Little does she know she'll not only find her inspiration here, but the love she thought she'd never have.
The vampire,Dante had never had a problem before hiding in open sight. But suddenly it is like the world in general, and a particular bunch of vampire hunters specifically, know every move he is going to make. They've found all his hideouts, know all of his secrets. How could this be?? No one knew these things. Fleeing yet another attempt on his undead life, he retreats to a home that he had owned a hundred years before. He is shocked to see that it has been totally restored to the way it was when he lived there, almost down to the last detail. He is even more shocked to see the human mortal woman who lives there, Morgan, and discover that she is one of "the chosen". For only the chosen are able to be changed into vampires and survive. She was his for the taking....And she was calling to HIM in the night. Dante. How? How could she know his name? And that this was once his home?
Dante soon finds that Morgan knows everything about him...secrets from hundreds of years past. He has to discover how she knows, and who she has told. Could she be the traitor who has turned the vampire hunters on him??
Maggie Shayne has created an incredible story of intrigue, the paranormal, and love story that is to `die' for. Her characters are so true to life personality, strength and weakness wise, that we can totally relate to them. She made me cringe at some of the things the vampire, Dante, did, while at the same time sympathizing and falling in love with him. She interweaves a secondary story line that will shock you, and pulls it off beautifully without taking away from Dante and Morgan's story.
If you're a fan of vampires, you don't want to miss this read!! TWILIGHT HUNTER is a stand alone story, one you'll fall in love with, but is also tied to a series of books by Maggie Shayne, her WINGS IN THE NIGHT series. I had never read them before, and must tell you, this reviewer is on a book hunt for her backlist!!
