#1 New York Times bestselling author Robyn Carr returns to Thunder Point with an uplifting story about overcoming loss and finding unexpected love

Scott Grant has a bustling family practice in the small Oregon community of Thunder Point. The town and its people have embraced the widowed doctor and father of two, his children are thriving, and Scott knows it's time to move on from his loss. But as the town's only doctor, the dating pool is limited. That is, until a stunning physician's assistant applies for a job at his clinic.

Peyton Lacoumette considers herself entirely out of the dating scene. She's already been burned by a man with kids, and she's come to Thunder Point determined not to repeat past mistakes. When Scott offers her a job, at a much lower salary than she's used to, Peyton is surprisingly eager to accept…at least for now. She's willing to stay for a three-month trial period while she explores other options.

Scott and Peyton know the arrangement is temporary—it isn't enough time to build a real relationship, never mind anything with lasting commitment. But love can blossom faster than you think when the timing is right, and this short visit just might hold the promise of forever.

Peyton Lacoumette drove slowly down the main street of Thunder Point, past all the small businesses, including the medical clinic. She drove all the way to the far end of the point where she was stopped by the ornate gates to what could only be a mansion. She could barely make out the structure behind overgrown hedges and untrimmed trees. She got out of the car to peer through the bars, but couldn't see much. If she had been with a couple of her brothers they might have wanted to scale the wall for a closer look, but that wouldn't do in a sundress and sandals.

She turned the car around and went back through the town. It looked pretty well-lived-in, but it was clean, and it was obvious from the small groups of people who had stopped to chat here and there that people were neighborly. A lot of them paused to stare at her car. It was a shiny new black Lexus and had been ridiculously expensive.

People stopping to talk happened a little less often in cities like Portland and San Francisco and hardly ever in New York City, though she'd liked living in those cities. In Bayonne, France, it was more common, almost required that you were never in a hurry. This place appealed to her immediately, probably because it was similar to the town closest to her family's farm. Or Bayonne, for that matter. Peyton saw a woman putting buckets of long-stemmed colorful flowers in front of her shop; a man was sweeping the sidewalk in front of his store; two dogs were leashed to a lamppost at the diner's door—a spotted Great Dane and a Yorkie, sharing a pan of water. The main street appeared well scrubbed and friendly.

She parked in front of the clinic and went inside. It was noon; there were no patients waiting, and the young woman behind the counter stood up to greet her with a smile. "Hi. How can I help you today?"

"I was just passing through, wondering where the best access to the beach was?"

"Probably the marina. Or, Cooper has a beach bar on the far side of the beach, up on the hillside. There's a road to his place from Highway 101, and he has stairs down to the beach and tables on his deck. Cooper's place is the best spot in town to watch the sunset. When the sun sinks behind those big rocks in the bay, it's really beautiful. I think he gets the best part of his business from people who stop by there for something to drink or eat when they're out walking on the beach or waiting for the sunset."

"I saw the beach access from the road, but I didn't stop. There's some building going on out there…."

"That's Cooper's, too. He's building a house, and next door we're building one, too. Me and my fiancé."

"Oh, congratulations," Peyton said. "On the engagement, not the building."

The young woman laughed. "You can congratulate me on that, too. I didn't think I'd ever live in an oceanfront house."

Peyton looked around the small office. "People must be feeling pretty healthy around here today."

"This is an unusually quiet day."

"Are you the doctor or nurse?"

"Just the office manager. Dr. Grant stepped out, since there weren't any patients. Do you need to see the doctor?"

"No," Peyton said with a laugh. "It just seemed like a good place to ask about the town."

"I'm Devon McAllister." She extended a hand across the counter.

"Peyton Lacoumette, nice to meet you," she said. "I grew up on a farm up north, not too far from Portland in the Mount Hood area. I didn't even know this town existed."

"We're a little off the beaten track, and everyone seems to like it that way. There are only two ways into town—across the beach from Cooper's place or a winding road north of here from 101. That's probably how you found us—there's an exit sign. Folks around here keep threatening to take down the sign," she added with a laugh. "They won't, but some tend to like the hidden quality."

"What do most people do around here?" Peyton asked.

"Lots of fishermen, obviously. Then there are small business owners and people who work in those businesses, like me. My fiancé is the athletic director at the high school. A lot of the local population works out of town—Bandon, Coquille, North Bend."

"I drove out to the point and saw a big house or building out there. Huge."

"It's a vacant house. The stuff of legends around here—the old Morrison place. It's before my time here, but I guess the family was rich once, went bust, declared bankruptcy, and the son killed someone and went to prison. He was just a teenager. The only murder this town has ever seen, I'm told."

"Why doesn't someone do something with that place?" Peyton asked.

"I guess because it's so big—no one can afford to live in it."

"What's big?"

Devon shrugged. "Country Club big. Huge rooms, a lot of bedrooms and bathrooms, a restaurant-size kitchen, thousands of square feet on hundreds of acres right on the point. The only other building out there is the lighthouse, because that point and its twin across the bay are very rocky."

"Hmm. Sounds like a clever person could turn it into a library or boarding school or nursing home. It would be fun to see the inside," she said.

"It would. I never thought about it, but a lot of people in town have been inside that house."

"Have you lived here your whole life?" Peyton asked.

"Oh, God, no!" Devon laughed. "Only a year. I'm originally from Seattle—a city girl, really. But there's something about this town…. I like the people, but more than that, it's the feeling of the town in general. It's safe, like it hugs you. Maybe because you have to come here on purpose, it's not something you'd see from the highway and it's not a thoroughfare. I've never lived in a little town before. And then I met my fiancé and found this job, and here I am," she said, and smiled prettily.

"But who runs the office? Is there just the one doctor?"

"Just me and Dr. Grant at the moment, but he's been looking for an associate or nurse practitioner. He doesn't want a big practice, but more than one person capable of writing scripts or putting in stitches would help a lot. It's becoming a busy clinic. He's hoping to expand—we have that many patients. This town could use a twenty-four-hour urgent care, but that takes much more room and staff. He says that's something for down the road."

"And you like it?"

"I love it. I love Dr. Grant."

Peyton raised a brow and smiled. "Does the athletic director mind that you love your boss?"

Devon laughed. "Spencer loves Dr. Grant, too! This town and my job—it's perfect for us. Spencer has an eleven-year-old son, Austin. And I have a four-year-old daughter, Mercy."

"Do you like your soon-to-be stepson?" Peyton asked.

"He's a dream come true," Devon said. "Mercy worships him, and he's very good to her."

"Very lucky for you," Peyton said. "Those things can be dicey—blending families like that."

"We're very lucky, that's true."

"What if you don't find an associate?" Peyton asked.

"We'll manage," Devon said. "We make it work somehow. It's just that…well, Dr. Grant spends a lot of time helping out at other hospitals, sitting on call almost every weekend, and that's inconvenient for him. He's a very devoted family man and needs more time with his family."

"Devoted family man?" Peyton asked.

"Absolutely. Plus he volunteers with Spencer as the game doctor for the football team. This town doesn't have a lot of money, and football is very important to Thunder Point. School programs and sports are the main entertainment here, and most of the student athletes are working hard for scholarships. Spencer's last school—a big, rich Texas high school—had a certified trainer and sports medicine physical therapist. We don't have resources like that here in this little town, so it's important to recruit volunteers like Dr. Grant. I wish you could meet him."

"Devon, would you excuse me for a second? I just have to get something…."

"Sure," Devon said. "Would you like a cup of coffee?"

"No, thanks," she said, smiling over her shoulder as she walked out to her car. She came back in with a cloth briefcase. She opened it on the counter in front of Devon and pulled out a thin newspaper. "I was renting a cottage in Coos Bay for a short vacation. I happened to see this ad but didn't know anything about the town. So, I thought I'd check it out and maybe drop off a résumé."

Devon glanced at the résumé, and her mouth fell open just as her eyes became very round with surprise. "Physician's assistant? From Portland?"

"I worked for a cardiologist. I was there for three years. Very busy practice. I was hoping for something a little quieter for a while."

Devon didn't speak right away. Then she said, "So, you're not just passing through."

"Well, I could have been. I haven't officially started looking for my next job yet. I haven't sent out any résumés yet."

"Why did you leave your former practice?"

"I was replaced, but I promise you my recommendation will be excellent," she said. "Maybe you could give my résumé to Dr. Grant, and if he's interested, my cell phone number and email address are right there," she said, pointing.

"I'll do just that," Devon said. "Miss Sneaky Britches."

Peyton laughed. "Please don't be offended, Devon.

I wasn't going to leave a résumé if something about the town or the clinic or the doctor didn't feel right."

"You haven't met the doctor."

"But you love him," Peyton said. "Even your fiancé loves him."

"Who loves me?" a man asked.

Peyton looked up, and there, standing in the space that led into the back of the clinic, was a very attractive man in his late thirties. He was dressed in faded jeans and a yellow dress shirt, open at the collar, sleeves rolled up. Although he was clearly over thirty-five, he had a boyish quality to his good looks. But not to his physique—he was broad shouldered and had muscular arms and big hands. Even from where she stood, she could see a depth to his blue eyes.

Devon looked over her shoulder. "Meet Dr. Scott Grant, who obviously just snuck in the back door."

He stepped forward. "Pleasure," he said. "Miss Sneaky Britches, was it?"

"Peyton Lacoumette," she said, taking his hand. "I saw your ad. After getting to know Devon a little bit, I decided to drop off a résumé. I'm a physician's assistant."

"Is that so?" he said, taking the page, glancing at it. "I've been interviewing."

"Well, give me a call if you think I suit," she said. "I'm staying in Coos Bay for a little while—just taking a breather before summer is over."

Without looking up from her résumé, he asked, "Do you have time for a conversation now?"

"I—I guess so," she said. Then she laughed a little uncomfortably. "I didn't expect… I didn't dress for… Sure, I have time."

"Good," he said. "Come on back." And he turned that she might follow him.

Scott found himself staring down at the résumé for a long time, looking for flaws. He knew if he looked across the desk he'd see only perfection, and it unsettled him. She was only a job applicant, after all. She was very pretty, yes, but not the type he usually found himself giving a second look. His eyes were usually drawn to blondes, like his late wife. This woman had dark hair, dark eyes and a slightly olive complexion. Her hair was long and straight and looked like a sheet of silk. Italian? Mexican? Sicilian? Her eyes were large and her eyebrows curved in a perfect arch. She was trim—she obviously took care of herself. He noted her very nice collarbones. He almost laughed aloud. Collarbones, Scott? Really? He was afraid to look up. He might lean over the desk to look at her feet and ankles, not that he gave a shit about ankles. He hoped they were at least thick and weird-looking. But he knew they would not be.

"Lacoumette," he said. "Interesting name…."

"It's Basque. Originally from the south of France. Most of the Basque blood in my family is Spanish, but the name originated in the northern Basque country and has survived for generations. My parents are second-generation Americans. They have a farm near Portland." She was quiet for a moment, then cleared her throat. "Do you have any questions about my résumé, Dr. Grant?" she asked.

"You seem to have a lot of experience," he said. "This is one of the most impressive résumés I've seen."

"Twelve years," she said. "Two practices and two hospitals, plus a year at a small clinic in Bayonne, France."

"France?"

"An old clinic right in the middle of Basque territory. I wanted to see where our people came from. I'm probably related to half of them." And she smiled then, showing off a row of beautiful white teeth. She was stunning.

"What do you prefer? The private practice or the hospital?"

"For the hands-on work, the hospital wins. For compensation, I'll take private practice every time."

With her experience, Scott knew she could very likely make more money than he did, in the right place. "Did you look around? This isn't a rich practice."

"That isn't why I dropped by," she said. "Are you frowning?"

Was he glaring at her? He shook himself. "I didn't mean to do that, to be defensive," he said. "It's just that…" He took a breath. "Let me be frank. I started this clinic on a shoestring. I run it on a tight budget. Where salary is concerned, I doubt I could meet your demands."

I AM MOVING TO THUNDER POINT!
By The Literacy Advocate
NOTE: Current reading order of the Thunder Point Series novels is at the end of this review.

We long-time Robyn Carr fans do not read her novels with the notion of finding perfect structure, innovative style, totally unexpected action, or shocking plot development. To those who comment on feeling too much repetition of character type or action in Robyn's series, or on the choppiness of the multiple points of view presented, I say this: Robyn's three series, Grace Valley, Virgin River, and now, Thunder Point, are warm and wonderful and real...just like the very best of friends we look for in 'real life.' This time, Robyn takes us on a wonderful walk through Thunder Point with Dr. Scott Grant, a lonely widower who wants to meet a woman who can appreciate the children he loves unconditionally and who wants to share his life of service. Peyton Lacoumette, a physician's assistant, arrives in Thunder Point with a significant amount of baggage. She's left her high-paying city job after her live-in lover, also the owner of the medical practice Peyton worked for, replaced her both in his office and in his bed with a nurse also working in his practice. Peyton's experience as caretaker for his spoiled, entitled children make her determined to avoid men with children as potential relationship material. The strength of this story, like all of Robyn's books, is in the characters who mean the world to us. We follow their thoughts as the author presents each of their points of view (a difficult, complex effort in an anthology-based series), and we cheer them on, hoping that they will find their happy endings and immensely satisfied that the author honors our expectations. There is pain, and loss, and growth, and the wonderful sense of neighborhood that has too often disappeared in our "real" world. Indeed, the residents of Thunder Point all get by with a little help from their friends. I'd move there in a minute, but I'll have to settle for loving every single one of these stories.

If you have not read Robyn's Virgin River series, you are missing out on one of the best "warm fuzzy" reading experiences one could ever have. For the correct reading order of the VR series (currently at 20 titles), please see my other reviews, beginning with Virgin River, the first novel in the series of the same name. Don't miss it!

A Great Small Town Read!
By Stephanie
First posted at Once Upon a Chapter

If I’m being honest with myself I went into The Promise by Robyn Carr more than a little confused. I read Virgin River by Robyn Carr a few years ago and remember really enjoying it. Then a few months back I read Four Friends and didn’t enjoy it near as much as I had anticipated. Needless to say, I wasn’t sure what to expect with The Promise.

I haven’t read a contemporary romance in too long. The Promise by Robyn Carr set me in the small town of Thunder Point. There are quite a few characters introduced in the beginning of the book. I just rolled with the flow and everyone soon fell into place in my mind. Peyton and Scott both had some issues that needed to be worked through and these issues even presented themselves during the middle of the story.

If you’re a long time reader of the blog, you know I’m a sucker for secondary characters. The Promise delivers in spades. I really enjoyed spending a few hours with them and Carr made me want to live there. The male lead, Scott Grant, does have two small children and I have to say they really added to the story. I finished this book late Saturday night. I woke up Sunday morning and was disappointed that I didn’t have more to read.

The Promise by Robyn Carr is the fifth book in the Thunder Point series. It can easily stand by itself. I haven’t read the remainder of the series and still loved the book. I’m even more excited to go back and read some of the older books in the series. If you’re looking for a small town contemporary romance, make sure you check out the Thunder Point series by Robyn Carr!

Another fantastic addition to this series!
By CINDY F.
I have followed Robyn Carr since the beginning, and she has never disappointed me yet. I'm not afraid to say that she is, and has been for many years now, #1 on my all time favorite author's lists. She has a way of creating wonderful, and very believable characters we can all relate to. And this book is no exception. I don't know about anyone else, but all of her stories and the characters tend to stick with me for several days after I've finished reading them.

I love this series which started out as a spin off from the beloved "Virgin River" series and Grace Valley. When I first heard she had this new series coming out; I wasn't sure how I was going to like it. I was still so in love with the Virgin River and all of it's wonderful characters, that I knew I'd have to eventually let go. And frankly, I was a little bit worried that this series wouldn't measure up.

But I should have known better, because I was so totally wrong. This series is just as captivating as her Virgin River series, although I still can't help but miss Jack and the whole gang back in Virgin River. I've read them all several times now, and it still feels like coming home every time I do.

This series is growing on me real fast though. I have loved each and every book, as well as all the characters that have been involved, so far. When this book was released, I couldn't pick it up fast enough. Dr. Grant has had me intrigued for quite a while now, and I'm glad we finally got to read his story.

Not only did we get to see another side of Dr. Scott Grant, but I also fell in love with Peyton Lacoumette as well as her wonderful, wild, and wacky family, too. A lot of people could learn a whole lot about real love, devotion, and good family values, just by hanging around the family ranch. Paco and Corinne were so full of wisdom, and they taught their children that anything was possible with hard work. But it was their no nonsense attitudes and their playfulness that really made my heart melt.

That's the thing I love most of all about Robyn Carr books. She has the ability to weave these wonderful characters, who come from all different walks of life, and blend them all together so seamlessly. And she always makes sure we get to catch up with some of our favorites from the past, too. But her stories aren't all just a bunch of fluff. These character have lived hard lives and have had to deal with a lot of very emotional situations, and some very terrifying ones at times, too.

This book might not have dealt with scary situations like the ones we seen previously involving Devon and the cult situation, or the terrifying one with the death of Conner's old friend, but it was still a very emotional and heart-warming story all the same. Scott and Peyton made me laugh, cry, and made me want to root for them in the end. I would have liked more at the end of this story to see what happens down the road, but Robyn will probably fill us in with the next book, just like she usually does.

I'm curious as to what she has in store for Rawley & Carrie. I know they say they are only friends right now, but they get along together better than most old married couples. I think it would be so much fun to watch these two, as they begin to develop deeper feeling for one another. And I have no doubt they will, eventually. Nothing would make me happier to see these two lost and lonely souls finally find happiness together.

I could go on and on, but not without giving away the whole story. I will say; That I would highly recommend this book---- as well as this whole series---- to everyone!

Under the pert pen name "Lady Smart," opinionated Lindsey Graham crusades for social change among London's elite, writing for the ladies' gazette Heart to Heart. But Lindsey's greatest campaign begins when her brother Rudy, a notorious rake, is accused of murdering a string of prostitutes.

Her confidence in his innocence is bolstered when an anonymous letter arrives naming Viscount Merrick as the killer. Lindsey launches her own investigation into the gentleman's questionable pursuits, a risky venture that earns her an unwelcome bodyguard—Thor Draugr.

At first, Lindsey refuses the protection of her employer's brother-in-law. They are like oil and water, yet she can barely conceal her attraction to the rugged Norseman. But an attempt on her life reveals not only the lengths that someone will go to in order to prevent her interference in the viscount's sordid affairs, but that she can no longer deny that she desires the warrior by her side.…

From Booklist
Lindsey Graham is unusual among women in London in 1944. She is an heiress and the editor of the women’s section of the newspaper and a gossip columnist. She has no intention of marrying right away and, instead, enjoys the small freedoms she can take while her parents travel the continent. Thor Draugr works at the paper his brother’s wife owns, trying to make his fortune in a land so strange compared to his isolated, Nordic island home. Thor and Lindsey are acutely aware of each other and deal with it in an antagonistic manner until Lindsey’s brother is questioned about the serial murders of prostitutes. Lindsey is determined to find the real killer, and Thor can’t turn down his sister-in-law’s request to watch out for her. They come to admire each other, but so many obstacles are in their way. Martin’s romantic and intriguing romance-mystery is a fitting end to the engaging Heart trilogy (Heartless, 2001; Heart of Fire, 2008). --Maria Hatton

COVENT GARDEN KILLER STRIKES AGAIN.

Londoners grow nervous.

Thor scanned the front page article in the London Times— details of the second brutal murder in the Covent Garden district in the last six months.

Unlike his older brother, Leif, Thor wasn't much of a reader. He figured the best use for a newspaper was to wrap up dead fish. He admitted it was probably important to keep up with what was happening around him, so he struggled through the English words, a language he had only started learning a little over two years ago. Before that, he had lived on an island far to the north, an isolated world only a handful of people knew existed.

With the help of his teacher, Professor Paxton Hart, he had learned to read and write, how to dress and move about in English society. Leif and his wife helped as well, and life here grew easier all the time. Still, Thor liked being out of doors, not inside reading a book.

"So you're the one who stole my paper!" An indignant female voice snagged his attention. "I've been looking all over." Hands on hips, Lindsey Graham marched across the office like a raven swooping down on its prey.

Holding the evidence of his guilt in one big hand, Thor stood in the doorway of the back room of Heart to Heart, the ladies' magazine owned by his brother's wife, Krista Hart Draugr, and her father, his teacher, Sir Paxton Hart. It was Thursday, the day before the paper came out, and the office hummed with activity.

"I did not steal it," he said to the avenging angel bearing down on him. "I borrowed it. I wanted to know about the murder."

Her eyes shot to his, a tawny golden color like the she-cat she was. "There was a second murder?"

He nodded, held the paper so she could read the headline. "Down in Covent Garden," he said. "Same as before."

Lindsey took the newspaper and scanned the article. She was taller than the average woman, yet far shorter than his six-foot-five-inch frame. She was slender, her hair a light golden brown. With her fine-boned, delicate features, she was pretty, but not in the way he preferred.

Like his brother, he wanted his women lusty, buxom and full-breasted, the kind built to satisfy a man. Leif had found Krista, the mate of his heart. Thor was still looking for the female who would be his.

"Another woman killed," Lindsey said, her tawny gaze glued to the page, "strangled just like the last time. The police believe the same man is likely responsible."

Lindsey was editor of the women's section of the paper and also wrote a gossip column called Heartbeat. She was a hard worker, he knew, a quality he admired since he worked so hard himself. Whenever he wasn't down at the docks, bossing the stevedores who loaded and unloaded the cargo carried by his brother's company, Valhalla Shipping, he worked for Heart to Heart. He was saving his money to buy a place in the country, far away from the choking air of London.

"Here's something new," Lindsey went on, her fine, straight nose immersed in the printed lines. "It says the women who were killed were 'ladies of the evening.'"

"Whores," Thor said simply.

Lindsey blushed. "That does not mean it is all right for someone to kill them."

"I did not say that."

She sighed. "I feel sorry for the people who live in the neighborhood. Two murders in the last six months. They must be terrified. I certainly hope the police apprehend him this time."

"The paper says they have found clues. They believe they will soon have a suspect. Mayhap this time they will catch him."

"I wonder what they have discovered."

Thor made no reply, since neither of them knew the answer. Engrossed in the paper, Lindsey wandered over to her desk, sat down and continued to read. In the middle of the room, the big Stanhope press sat silent, but soon the next edition would be rumbling off for sale on the streets.

Thor liked to watch the press at work. In truth, he was amazed by the heavy machinery he had seen since his arrival in England, equipment that could spin cotton into cloth, or press glass into various shapes and sizes. There were even powerful steam machines called locomotives that could carry people to distant places in hours instead of days.

There was nothing like that on the remote island of Draugr where he and Leif had been born and raised. People on Draugr still lived as they had hundreds of years ago. They were warriors and farmers, not city dwellers like the people in London.

Flashing a smile at the typesetter, Bessie Briggs, an older woman who mothered him as if he were her son, he went back to work stacking boxes and crates, making room for tomorrow's papers.

It was only a few minutes later that the bell rang above the front door, drawing his attention to a thin man, slightly beak-nosed and dark-haired, who walked into the office. Dressed in an expensive-looking dark brown tailcoat and tan trousers, he carried one of those stupid high hats London men favored and Thor flatly refused to wear.

Returning to his work, he forgot about the man until he heard voices raised in anger. Saying a grateful prayer that this time the object of Lindsey's wrath was someone else, he gazed through the door in her direction and saw the well-dressed man standing next to her desk. They were arguing. Noticing the hard set of the man's jaw, the blood-lust in his eyes, Thor's senses went on alert.

Lindsey clamped her hands on her hips. "I don't give a fig whether you bloody well like it or not. If you hadn't been cheating on your wife, I wouldn't have found out and I wouldn't have written about you in my column!"

"You little bitch! My wife is threatening divorce. I am the Earl of Fulcroft and a Whitfield, and Whitfields do not divorce! You will write a retraction immediately or I will personally see you ruined!"

"And how, may I ask, do you intend to do that?"

A grim smile curved the earl's lips. "I will dig into your past until I find something that will scandalize the very people your column is meant to impress. There will be something—there always is—no matter how young and innocent you seem. And I shall keep digging until I find it! Then we'll see how much you 'bloody well like it!'"

Thor had heard enough. Seeing Lindsey's face had turned a little pale, he strode toward Fulcroft, grabbed him by the lapels of his expensive coat and jerked him up on his toes.

"You are finished with your threats to the lady. You will apologize for the name you called her and then you will leave."

"Put me down this instant!"

Ignoring the stunned look on Lindsey's face, Thor shook him like the rat he was. "I said you will apologize. Do it now."

The earl dangled there, his feet swinging, his shiny leather shoes dangling several inches above the floor. "All right, all right. I'm sorry I called you a bitch. Now put me down!"

Thor set the man back on his feet and the earl eased toward the door. He pierced Lindsey with a glare. "Your bulldog notwithstanding, I meant every word. I'll expect to read your retraction in the next edition of the paper."

"Don't hold your breath!" Lindsey called after him as he turned and hurried out of the office.

Thor was feeling well pleased with himself when Lindsey rounded on him. "Don't you ever do that again!"

"What are you talking about?"

"You interfered in my business. I can deal with my problems myself. I don't need any help from you."

Thor clenched his jaw. "You wished for the man to continue his insults? You did not mind that he called you a female dog?"

Her eyes widened. Then a corner of her mouth twitched. "I minded. But I could have handled him myself."

"Fine. The next time a man insults you, I will pretend not to hear. Does that suit you, lady?"

Her eyes held his an instant before she glanced away. "It suits me. I don't need your help or anyone else's."

Thor shook his head. "Stubborn as an ugly horse."

"You mean mule," she corrected.

"Fine. Stubborn as a mule."

Lindsey flashed him a last brief glance, turned and walked away.

Damned woman, he thought, trying not to notice the way her hips swayed beneath her full skirts, to wonder if her waist was really small enough for his hands to fit around it. She was as slender as a boy. Why he should notice her at all he could not imagine.

Still, he had to admit she had a very pretty face and skin as smooth and pale as cream. Her hair, the color of rich, dark honey, shimmered in the sun shining in through the window.

His body tightened. Grinding his jaw against a shot of lust that angered him more than aroused him, he strode back to the rear of the office and began stacking the rest of the newspaper bundles.

He wasn't attracted to Lindsey Graham. She wasn't the sort of woman he found the least attractive. But as she moved across the office in that graceful way of hers, Thor found himself watching her again.

Lindsey finished reworking the notes she had made for this week's column. At the back of the office, she could hear Thor at work loading stacks of bound newspapers, getting ready for the edition that would be on the streets tomorrow.

Lindsey knew Krista was eager for this particular issue to come out. She was campaigning hard against the institution of baby farming, the awful practice of selling illegitimate infants into places that ultimately resulted in their deaths, neatly disposing of unwanted problems.

Their mutual friend, Coralee Whitmore Forsythe, had uncovered the terrible practice during her search for the man who had murdered her sister. While Corrie was away on her quest, Lindsey had taken over writing the society column for the gazette. Though Corrie was currently on her honeymoon with her husband, the Earl of Tremaine, once she returned to England, she and Gray would add their support to Krista's campaign.

Lindsey glanced through the door leading into the back room of the office. She could see Thor at work, his powerful body hoisting and moving the bound stacks of newspapers as if they weighed nothing. It was a laborer's job. Thor was a man who seemed to enjoy physical exertion.

He wasn't obsessed with learning as his older brother, Leif, had been, but considering he had arrived in England only a few years ago, he had educated himself fairly well.

She didn't know much about him, only that he came from some tiny island north of the Orkneys. He spoke English well, with just a slight accent that sounded faintly Norwegian. He could read and write, though not as well as he could speak, and Krista and her father had taught him at least the basics necessary to move about in polite society.

Still, in most ways, the man was a barbarian. He had no interest in the arts, theater, or opera, no desire to attend the soirees, balls, and risottos that Lindsey enjoyed so much. As society editor of Heart to Heart and author of the weekly gossip column, Heartbeat, it was necessary for her to mingle and mix with the social elite. As the daughter of a baron, Lindsey did it well.

She liked her job, liked the independence it gave her. Of course, in the beginning, her mother and father had been horrified at the notion of their twenty-two-year-old daughter actually working, but they were gone a great deal and Lindsey had insisted she needed something to do. In the end, as usual, she had gotten her way.

Once again, her parents were traveling on the Continent, leaving Lindsey in the house under the care of her mother's older sister, Delilah Markham, Countess of Ashford. Lindsey liked her aunt, an extremely forward-thinking woman who, at forty-six, had lived an exciting life and intended to enjoy every moment of the years ahead.

Which meant that basically, Lindsey was on her own.

It was warm in the office this early September day. Lindsey fanned herself with the newspaper she had been reading, then flicked a glance toward the back of the building, where Thor bent down to hoist another bundle. He always dressed simply, never wore a waistcoat, cravat or stock.

Her eyes widened as she realized the man had stripped off his tailcoat and unbuttoned his fine lawn shirt all the way to his navel. She could see his massive chest, a wide V of swarthy skin covered by thick slabs of muscle, even the ladder of muscle across his flat belly. The work was heavy and perspiration ran in rivulets through his dark hair and down his thick neck. It plastered his shirt to his incredible body. His arms bulged with muscle, and when he turned away, slabs of muscle tightened across his broad back.

Lindsey's stomach contracted. The only thing the big brute had going for him was a body that seemed to mimic the Norse god he was named for, and eyes so blue that when you looked into them, you felt as if you might disappear.

It simply wasn't fair that a man should look so good on the outside and have so little of interest on the inside.

It simply wasn't fair.

Still, Lindsey stared at him, unable to look away, fascinated until he turned round and caught her.

His dark head came up and those incredible blue eyes locked on her face.

"I am not decently clothed," he said. "A lady would not look."

Her chin inched up. "And a gentleman would not disrobe except in private!" Whirling her chair around, her pulse hammering far too fast, she jerked her plumed pen from its silver holder, jabbed it into the inkwell and stabbed it down on the paper, leaving a purple stain as she tried to scratch out the first paragraph of her upcoming column.

Thor said something beneath his breath and went back to hoisting bundles.

"Are you all right?"

Her head came up and she flushed guiltily at the sight of her employer and best friend, Krista Hart Draugr, approaching her desk. She started to say that she was just fine before Thor had stripped off half his clothes, but stopped when she realized Krista was referring to the argument she'd had earlier with the Earl of Fulcroft, not Thor.

"Bessie told me about the earl," Krista went on. "I'm sorry I wasn't here." She was tall, taller than most men, except, of course, for her husband and Thor. With her big green eyes and golden blond hair, she was a beautiful woman. And she had found exactly the right man for her in Leif. The pair had a nine-month-old son they adored, and as virile as both brothers appeared to be, soon there would probably be another addition to the family.

Lindsey looked up at Krista and smiled. "I am fine. Fulcroft was just blowing off steam."

Heart of Courage by Kat Martin

Historical Romance Mass Market Paperback - January 1, 2009
4 stars

Heart of Courage is the third book in the Historical Heart Trilogy. This series takes place in the 1800's England. Although women of this period are traditionally reserved and demur, the heroine, Lindsey is no such lady. She is an adventurous, smart, and unconventional young woman who is on a mission to prove her brother is innocent of a series of heinous crimes.

Of course, a woman in the 1800's cannot be out on her own solving crimes, so a work colleague, Thor, agrees to help her on her quest. When Thor is first introduced, he is a stiff, conservative man, but I am happy to say that as the story unfolds so does Thor. As the book progresses, so does the soft vulnerabilities of this proud Viking.

This book begins as Thor does, stiff, but it's a case where patience really pays off. By the middle of the book, you become wrapped up in the story. By the end, it's a book that cannot be put down.

The love scenes are steamy and the hero is strong, but it is the heroine that really steals the show. She's one of those characters that stick with you and in the end; you really feel that she deserves a happy ending. Overall, this book is well written and worth the time it takes to read it.

Not impressed
By Melissa
I have not really been enthralled with Kat Martin's Heart Series, the first book was okay but this last one was just not engaging, the plot was predictable and the characters were stubborn.

Lindsey Graham is a society reporter who has a wastrel brother accused of murdering prostitutes and she knows he just has to be innocent. Lindsey overlooks her brother's excessive gaming and drunken nights. She is going to find the true murderer and she highly resents that Thor Draugr, her employer's brother-in-law, is going to stop her.

Thor is a self appointed body guard to Lindsey and when she is almost raped and killed in an incredibly foolhardy plan he saves her. She is grateful and accepts his proffered assistance. She is attracted to Thor and initially all they did was argue but she does appreciate the value in having a strong man around. She snoops in bawdy houses and pubs looking for clues that she believes the police could never hope to find.

She is attracted to Thor and wants to become his lover as she is not a maiden. Seems she was curious about sex and indulged in some lovemaking with a former suitor when she was in her teens. Thor resists but she is persistent. She does not love him but is still curious about the whole bedding experience with him. Thor is not a titled man, he has some means but nowhere near what Lindsey's family possesses and he feels they should not engage in a physical affair but Lindsey does not listen that well.

The two begin an affair while they are still searching for clues to the killer. Thor even has the time to tame an unruly horse, apparently he is an early horse whisperer, and he still manages to track down informants and leads for Lindsey.

This novel never really got off the ground for me. Lindsey just seemed self involved and made way too many excuses for her brother. Thor was stubborn and at times overbearing. The mystery was not important to me as I thought Lindsey's brother was a wastrel and spoiled. Finally the romantic tension was missing in the beginning of the story and the initial conversations between the leads always felt stilted and unnatural. I have thoroughly enjoyed other novels by Kat Martin, in fact many are on my keeper shelf, this however will not be one of them.

and have even found happiness as well
By Linda Murphy on
With the third book of the Cold Creek series and its dynamic conclusion, brings forth again, another exciting, riviting, and romantic novel, by Karen Harper..........After being gone for so long, Charlene "Char" Lockwood, couldn't believe it herself, that she was actually back in Cold Creek, Ohio, her hometown, and a place she swore, she would never return to. After all, who could blame her? Her sister Tess, was kidnapped as a child, returned sometime later, only to have their father desert them all in the process. However, even with some close calls last year, her sisters are back where they belong, so they say, and have even found happiness as well. Going up a treacherous mountainside in her pick-up truck, all thoughts are put to the side, when she sees another vechicle in trouble, about to go over the side. Without thinking, she helps the driver, and he gets into her truck, where she meets young and very handsome, Matt Rowan, part owner and manager of Lake Azure Properties. Of course, the minute their eyes met, there was an instaneous attraction. By telling her, that someone forced him off the road to cause great peril, she goes with him to see her brother-in-law, Sheriff Gabe McCord. Matt Rowan has all the respect in the world for his father's long-time friend, Royce Fleming, also senior partner of his company, but Matt is also aware, how the locals feel about "fracking". In order for it to happen, it must be done safely and with regard to the people. The first thing she told herself when she came back to town was no more romances, but to Char's surprise, that was all about to change, when Matt Rowan came knocking on her door. It seems, as much as they tried, romance wasn't in the cards. Instead, someone was out to hurt the both of them. Char, being a social-worker, and helping families and their children on the mountain, has been threatened. What's more, when Matt brought her home, someone shot at her with an arrow. Last year, someone pushed Matt's foreman, off a cliff and there have been threats on his life, as well. What is going on? Was it angry locals? In regards to his company , buying properties? The fracking? But what about Char? Who would want to kill her? Or him for that matter? After promising to keep her safe always, Matt Rowan and Gabe McCord are going to discover some horrific answers to their ugly questions, but not before Matt learns that the woman he loves, has just disappeared from the face of the earth, before he ever had a chance to tell her, how he truly feels. For Gabe, however, he thought of Tess, all those years before, and lifted his head and whispered, "dear God, here we go again!"...................great book by Miss Harper and a perfect way to end the trilogy.........thank you......♡♡

A suspenseful series -The most intense and controversial with dark secrets of Cold Creek uncovered by the Lockwood sisters!
By Judith D. Collins
A special thank you to Harlequin/Mira and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. 4.5 stars

Karen Harper returns with her third installment in the suspenseful Cold Creek romantic thriller trilogy, BROKEN BONDS, her most intense and controversial novel of fracking. Hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking”, is the process of drilling and injecting fluid into the ground at a high pressure in order to fracture shale rocks to release natural gas inside.

If you have read the other two books in the series, Cold Creek is set in the Appalachia, with many dark secrets, and the Lockwood sisters are uncovering them one by one. As they struggle to find their place in life and the men to love, they have to overcome many obstacles.

Each book centers on one of the sisters, Tess, Kate, and now Charlene, the third sister. Everyone in town knows or has heard of the Lockwood sisters as Tess was kidnapped years ago and Kate with the chaos at the Adena burial mound.

SHATTERED SECRETS, Tess’s story, FORBIDDEN GROUND, Kate’s story, and BROKEN BONDS, Charlene’s story. Three very different sisters, three desirable and dangerous men, and three endangered lives.

Charlene is a social worker and recently moved from out West to join her sisters in Cold Creek. As the book opens she is visiting one of our clients at their respective home, and as she is leaving, she witnesses a truck literally hanging from a cliff.

She is instrumental in grabbing Matt from the truck before it goes over. Matt was run off the road by a black pickup truck, and someone tried to kill him. Was the killer after Matt or his senior partner, the person who normally drives the company truck he was driving.

Matt is the general manager of a new luxury community of Lake Azure. Of course, Charlene finds him easy on the eye, and she is determined to help him find the person who did this. There are so many suspects, as the local cult, Hear Ye, or Matt’s boss, as no one is safe until they uncover the secrets.

Most recently, the issue of lucrative fracking contracts going to only a few select people was causing rifts among the locals. Fracking brought in business, but the truck drivers and rig men caused problems in the once-pristine area.

Matt understood money talked; however, he could not understand why his boss, Royce could not see his lucrative new business could hurt the human and natural environment of his big Lake Azure investment.

Charlene (Char) knew some of the locals resented the so-called rich folk who built luxury getaway homes or weekend places at Lake Azure, so possibly Matt had some enemies. In the process Sherriff McCabe (Gabe) helps with the investigation (married to her younger sister).

A very interesting read, as they solve the mystery and while fracking breaks up rock and fractures the ground to force out gas and oil; other kinds of fracking are at work in relation to broken marriages, broken family ties, and a split in the community that force emotions to the surface.

As the Lockwood sisters, and their men, are working together, they finally come home, to get their happy ending and help turn Cold Creek and Lake Azure back into its rightful place for a satisfying ending.

Would highly recommend reading the books in order, even though they could be read as a standalone; however, you will want to catch up with familiar faces and names from the previous books. Each book has different issues which surround the area, with a combination of suspense, intrigue, mystery and romance!

Be sure to read book 1 & 2 first
By read-along-with-sue
I love Karen Harper books and I am sure coming in at the deep of of book 3, not having read her previous books in this series, didn't help me grasp what was going on at first. The history between the sisters and all that goes with it, is something I obviously needed to read.

I would definitely say, read book 1 and 2 first.

The start of this book just hooks you in, because there is a lorry about to go over a cliff. So, this grabs your interest right away.

Charlene [one of the sisters] works as a social worker, she goes around the mountains encouraging kids to go to school, to get parents to agree to this is sometimes a problem.

Back to the lorry hanging over the cliff......well this is where Charlene gets to meet Matt. He is the driver. Was he pushed? did it mean to happen to him? did someone want his dead?
Charlene and Matt become quite close in this story.

There were times when Charlene was in danger in her cabin, so this kept you on your toes. I wasn't sure who was who and why sometimes and what eventually would happen or be revealed, but my stars come from the fact that I didn't put it down due to it kept my interest.

I need to go back to book 1 AND 2 obviously!

powerful scary investigative thriller
By A Customer
The first incident occurs in Albany, New York followed by Providence, San Diego and Miami. In each case the driver insisted the car drove it self. Insurance companies and car manufacturers are concerned though no one has linked the four incidents. Following the fifth event when a school principal's vehicle reportedly did the same thing, the consortium hires Colter Associates to investigate. Ben Colter heads to the new site in Wickfield, Connecticut while the other two associates split the remaining four locations.

In Wickfield, Ben meets computer guru Emily Doyle who he recently offered a job to, but she declined since she is a single parent raising a ninth grader by herself. They are immediately attracted to one another. However, unbeknownst to either, Lyden Gray, a participant in Emily's on-line chat, thinks she is a goddess who he must protect from evil-doers like principals who take up her time as he can hack into any computer program even those in a car.

With wireless cell phones used to set off explosions, the technology seems frighteningly plausible. Thus readers obtain a powerful scary investigative thriller that grips the reader from the moment we comprehend what Lyden achieved from a remote distance with the principal's car. Colter and Emily are intelligent likable protagonists, but the obsessed Lyden steals the show with his dangerous skills that makes one wonder about the safety of a car with all the computer gizmos inside.

Too many words used to tell this story
By M. C. Carter
Intriguing plot and personable (if not truly memorable)characters BUT, I found myself racing through so many unneeded words--maybe the publisher asked for a book of so and so many words or pages? I also found the outcome for the 'bad guy' to be totally unbelievable given the final body count and his stated intent. Not a bad beach or pool book by any means, but this husband and wife writing team can and have done so much better with other offerings in the past.

Another great book worth the money and time
By horsemom
Loved it again. Great story, gripping story line. Love these authors and highly recommend their books. Technical, intelligent, mature, and highly researched.

I have to share something in case anyone thinks this is farfetched and can't happen. This happened to me in my Dodge Ram truck.

Susannah's Garden (A Blossom Street Novel), by Debbie Macomber

It was the year that changed everything.

When Susannah Nelson turned eighteen, she said goodbye to her boyfriend, Jake—and never saw him again. She never saw her brother again, either. Doug died in a car accident that same year.

Now, at fifty, she finds herself regretting the paths not taken. Long married, a mother and a teacher, she should be happy. But she feels there's something missing in her life, although she doesn't know exactly what. Not only that, she's balancing the demands of an aging mother and a temperamental twenty-year-old daughter.

Her mother, Vivan, a recent widow, is having difficulty coping and living alone, so Susannah goes home to Colville, Washington. In returning to her parents' house, her girlhood friends and the garden she's always loved, she also returns to the past—and the choices she made back then.

What she discovers is that things are not as they once seemed. Some paths are dead ends. But some gardens remain beautiful….

From Publishers Weekly
Bestselling author Macomber (There's Something About Christmas) explores the intricate dynamics of family with sincerity and wit in this well-crafted novel. At 50, Seattleite Susannah Nelson is unsatisfied with her American dream: she's got a devoted husband, two teenage children and a rewarding career teaching fifth grade. She's also got a recently deceased father, a mother increasingly unable to care for herself, and recurring dreams about her high school sweetheart, Jake Presley, who disappeared around the time of the death of her brother, Doug, 30 years ago. Returning to her hometown of Colville, Wash., over the summer to look after her mother, Susannah has an ulterior motive: to find Jake. As she orchestrates her mother's rocky move to a nursing home and tries to keep track of her household (particularly her petulant daughter, recently taken with shiftless townie Troy Nance), Susannah picks up Jake's trail with the help of a private investigator and a childhood friend. As tension mounts between Susannah and her family, she uncovers the shocking details of Jake's disappearance—and of Doug's death—and ultimately faces her long-buried resentment toward her father. Macomber excels at detailing family conflict and the resulting tangle of regret and anger, but her God's-eye-view keeps her characters at arm's length, showing readers their emotional complexity rather than providing a view from within. From Booklist
Most of us wonder what our lives would have been like if we had taken another path and made different choices. Susannah Nelson has a wonderful husband, two nearly grown kids, and a teaching career, but ever since her father's death, she has been vaguely unsettled. Never on especially good terms with him, she has always believed that he had a hand in running off her first love. Now her mother seems to be failing mentally. Susannah's husband encourages her to visit her mother, possibly settle her into an assisted-living facility, and try to shake off her depression. He has no idea that Susannah can't stop thinking about her lost love, Jake, and intends to find out why he left her. When she arrives in Colville from Seattle, Susannah discovers her mother is much worse than she imagined. Her inquiry into the road not taken reveals shocking truths about her family and, most importantly, herself in Macomber's latest touching and resonant tale. Maria Hatton

Lovely and Heartwarming - Family and Relationships
By M. Rondeau
When she was eighteen, Susannah Nelson was sent abroad to school. In what she saw as her fathers attempt in dictating her life it effectively separated her from her boyfriend Jake, and she never got to see her brother Doug again who was killed that summer in an automobile accident. After a few short letters, Susanna never heard from or saw Jake and though it hurt at the time, she later met, married a fine man, and raised a family. -----

Now her children are just about grown, she's hitting midlife, and Susannah's marriage seemed stale as her thoughts continually seemed to focus on what `could have been' if her father hadn't interfered in her life and romance with Jake. With her father recently passed on, she had been summoned home sooner than she'd planned when alerted by neighbors and friends that her widowed mother was having difficulties dealing with her loss and living alone. Back in the house and town she'd grown up in Susanna would have to deal with her mother's increasing aging problems, and make some tough decisions regarding her care. Additionally, she would she face the past, discovering new insights into her troubled relationship with her dad, and dealing with a similar issue concerning her rebellious nineteen year old daughter. -----

With girlhood memories resurfacing along with long lost friends, Susannah discovered secrets that revealed not only an unselfish act of love, caring, and protection, but a surprising revelation of a mysterious presence once thought to be a figment of her mothers failing mind. ------

*** What a wonderful read! Macomber writes with heartbreaking realism when dealing with the decisions and choices made in friends and family relationships. She offers beautifully written prose that packs a mountain of emotion into every chapter. Through laughter and through tears, she nails relationships with astounding realism and understanding in this well-paced and heartwarming story, once again solidifying Macomber as a leader in fine woman's literature.

Just okay. NOT part of the Blossom Street Series - I feel tricked.
By Nicole D.
I recently started listening to the Blossom Street series on audio during my commute. I was excited to start the next book, and had purchased a set of three books, including this one, Back on Blossom Street and Twenty Wishes. I noticed on the box that this one didn't say "a Blossom Street Novel" under the title on the cover image, so I did some online research to determine which book I needed to read next. I can't stand reading a series out of order. I found mixed information, but on Debbie Macomber's website, it lists this as the next book, preceding Back on Blossom Street. So, I started it.

Right away, it got into the story about Susannah and her family, etc. Ok - fine. After quite some time, I realized I hadn't heard ANYTHING about any other other regulars from Blossom Street (Lydia, Alex, Jacqueline... anybody?!), and started to get irritated. So, I stopped listening and started on Back on Blossom Street. Ahhh - there are the characters I was expecting! Right away, Lydia & friends made an appearance. Hooray! So, I just figured that Susannah's Garden happened to be written between books in the Blossom Street series and made its way onto the official series list.

BUT THEN... there is a part not too far into Back on Blossom Street that mentions a new flower shop called Susannah's Garden. Damnit! Not wanting to miss any critical information, I swapped back to Susannah's Garden to hopefully pick up on what I missed. I listened the whole way through and it wasn't until literally the last five minutes when they even mentioned Blossom Street. Spoiler Alert: Susannah buys Fannie's Flowers and calls it Susannah's Garden. THAT IS THE ONLY THING THAT LINKS THIS BOOK TO THE BLOSSOM STREET SERIES.

So, if you're in the middle of the series like I am, skip this one. If you're obsessed with DM and want to read everything she's ever written, this is a fine read. But, it really has nothing to do with the series. And, for that, I am kind of angry. They threw me off with this random story and now I need to refresh my memory on where everyone on Blossom Street left off in A Good Yarn. Ugh. Darnit, Debbie!

The story itself started really slow for me. In my opinion, there was way too much mundane day-to-day information on Susannah's mother in the first half of the story. It really poked along for me. If I hadn't been hoping to catch the linkage to Blossom Street, I would have stopped listening rather quickly. Maybe I was a little biased (in a negative way) due to the fact I was annoyed that the book didn't seem to have a connection to Blossom Street, but I thought this was the worst DM novel I've read. It picked up toward the end a bit, but even then things became pretty predictable and just so-so.

As for the audio version, the narrator's annunciation of certain words bothered me (such as the words "true" and "Coalville"). Her character voices were also pretty annoying. I'd rather the narrator not use any special voices if they can't do a seamless character voice. This lady used a shaky, loud, grumbling voice for the old man and a shaky weak voice for the mother. Perhaps the most annoying, though, was the voice she did for Chrissy, who is an almost-20-year-old. She voiced her as if she were 6, and that really bothered me. A 19-year old is a grown woman and should have a normal female voice, not that of a child. Hopefully the rest of the Blossom Street books are ACTUALLY about the crew we know and love from A Good Yarn. Fingers crossed.

From Publishers Weekly
The latest contemporary from Wiggs (Table for Five) is a quiet, character-based romance set at the Catskills camp that Olivia Bellamy is renovating for her grandparents' 50th anniversary. Helping out is contractor Connor Davis, who initially doesn't recognize Olivia as the girl whose heart he broke a decade before at the very same camp. Now, both hold grudges against the other that hide their insecurities; although he's become successful and sophisticated, Connor believes Olivia's social status puts her out of his league, while Olivia remains buried in her awkward-little-fat-girl memories. The narrative switches off between present-day action and the summers Olivia and Connor spent at Camp Kioga, filling in the spaces of their relationship with each other and with their dysfunctional families. Wiggs's storytelling is heartwarming, but avoids schmaltz, and her chick-lit–ready leads seem older than their 20-some years, adding weight to their stories. Happily clutter free—no subplots to take attention away from the intelligent, appealing couple—this book, first in a series, should appeal to romance and women's fiction readers of any age. (Aug.)

From Booklist
Camp Kioga means many things to many people. For Olivia Bellamy, whose family operated the camp in the Catskills, it's all about bad memories. Although she was just as rich as the other attendees, she was never as pretty or thin or self-assured. The only thing that kept her from being completely miserable was the arrival each summer of Connor Davis. For Connor, the camp took him away from a life far different than Olivia's and showed him how life could be. Connor and Olivia finally have a relationship, which seems to scar her heart. Years later, a slimmed-down, professional Olivia is asked by her grandmother to prepare the camp for her fiftieth wedding anniversary. Connor is still in the area, and as soon as she hires him to help with the project, feelings arise on both sides. How good is perennially popular Wiggs in her new romance? Superb. Wonderfully evoked characters, a spellbinding story line, and insights into the human condition will appeal to every reader. Maria Hatton

A pleasure to read...
By S. Prince
Olivia Bellamy decides to spend her summer renovating Camp Kioga, the resort camp that has been in the family for over 3 generations. Her grandparents plan to celebrate their 50th anniversary by "renewing their vows" at the camp where they had first met, but since the camp has been closed for the last nine years it needs an "extreme makeover" before it can host such a huge family event. Olivia is reluctant to accept the job at first, because she spent all of her summers growing up there, and they were not happy memories. But after being dumped by her third fiance, she is overwhelmed with the need to get out of Manhattan, and away from her disappointed parents. Returning to Camp Kioga brings back many uncomfortable memories of her childhood growing up an overweight "smart mouthed" kid, with thick glasses and no friends ... no friends except for her older cousins, and one very handsome boy who was as unhappy and lonely as she was. His name was Connor Davis, and on Olivia's very first day back at the old camp, she finds out that he is the only building contractor available in town. Even though she loved Connor growing up, Olivia is not anxious to see him again, because he broke her heart when she was eighteen, the summer before she started college. When Connor arrives at camp to give a renovation estimate, he sees a beautiful, slender blonde, hanging from a flag pole. He doesn't realize that she is his childhood friend "Lolly", because Olivia Bellamy has changed quite a lot in the last several years...

This story goes back and forth between "present day" camp renovation, and Olivia's childhood memories of camp, (and a few memories from her parents' generation), but it does not distract from the story at all. It's a really good story, and the book was a joy to read from beginning to end. This is one of Susan Wiggs' best written books, and I find it very similar in style to many of family sagas written by Nora Roberts.

There's a Good Book Hidden Inside
By Sunhi Laub
First, this is more like a 2.5 than a 3 star book for me.

When I first started this story about a woman who is trying to get her life on track after her third serious relationship falls apart through no reason she can understand, I was interested. I liked the flashbacks to the camp, I liked her best friend, I liked her. I was willing to believe that this book deserved its RITA nomination. It was solidly entertaining, which is all I ever look for in my romance novels.

Somewhere along the way, I lost interest. Was it when I realized that her best friend was too awesome for her? That was a little early in the book. Was it when I began to think that her first boyfriend and new love interest was not so much a bad boy as a kind of lame man? Again, that was a little early. Was it when I realized I was following multiple love stories, solving a mystery about the main character's father, and watching a set up for future books? YEP. That's exactly where I lost interest in this whole thing.

This was my introduction to Susan Wiggs, and I found it both lackluster and slightly overwhelming. Was I supposed to care about all of the Bellamys? I know why romance novelists set up their series nowadays, and feel the need to revisit old characters from previous novels, but some days, I just want to read a standalone. I don't care about the future books or the past books. It's as hard to find a standalone romance as it is to find a single book in a fantasy series. WHY, authors, WHY? I know the answer is money, but, consider your readers.

If you like series, and you're ready to dive into them, and you love the idea of fake 'bad boys', perhaps you'll like this book. I just kept wondering why the main character didn't get together with her best friend who seemed like a way more awesome choice.

She harbored a palpable trust

I liked the idea of this book--that the heroine would return to the family's summer camp to renovate it, and at the same time face and overcome her painful memories as a camper and counselor there. But somewhere along the way, the story bogged down for me. I think the author tried to incorporate too many story lines and too many characters, which made it difficult to keep them all straight or even care about them. (The book's afterword invites the reader to look for more books in the "Lakeshore Chronicles" series, which explains why the author included so many extra characters but doesn't make it any more acceptable.) I thought the author's characterizations were all over the map and--maybe because she was juggling so many story lines--I never felt like I saw the characters' relationships changing and growing. Instead, the author told us that weeks had passed, that work had been done, and that relationships had changed and deepened. And even when the author did try to show us meaningful moments in the characters' lives, their reactions did not ring true to me--maybe because they all seemed to be walking-talking incarnations of Sociology 101 case studies: kids of divorce, biracial children, children of alcoholics, etc. It didn't help that the dialog was often stilted and somtimes descended into Oprah-speak: "You and Max are just beginning this journey. I wish I could spare you the pain and confusion you're bound to feel, but that isn't how divorce works." People don't talk that way. Ultimately, the book had some moving moments and I did finish it, but I sure won't be looking for the next book in this series.
