The Dead Travel Fast, by Deanna Raybourn

A husband, a family, a comfortable life: Theodora Lestrange lives in terror of it all.

With a modest inheritance and the three gowns that comprise her entire wardrobe, Theodora leaves Edinburgh—and a disappointed suitor—far behind. She is bound for Rumania, where tales of vampires are still whispered, to visit an old friend and write the book that will bring her true independence.

She arrives at a magnificent, decaying castle in the Carpathians, replete with eccentric inhabitants: the ailing dowager; the troubled steward; her own fearful friend, Cosmina. But all are outstripped in dark glamour by the castle's master, Count Andrei Dragulescu.

Bewildering and bewitching in equal measure, the brooding nobleman ignites Theodora's imagination and awakens passions in her that she can neither deny nor conceal. His allure is superlative, his dominion over the superstitious town, absolute—Theodora may simply be one more person under his sway.

Before her sojourn is ended—or her novel completed—Theodora will have encountered things as strange and terrible as they are seductive. For obsession can prove fatal…and she is in danger of falling prey to more than desire.

Shades of (Lady Julia) Grey
By Ellis Bell
Theodora Lestrange is a budding author who receives an invitation from her friend, Cosmina, to stay in her fiancee's castle in Transylvania. Seeing this as the perfect opportunity to gain inspiration for the novel she's always wanted to write, Theodora goes to Transylvania--and finds herself immediately attracted to the castle's owner, count Andrei Dragulescu.

I'm not quite as fond of this novel as I am of Raybourn's Lady Julia Grey series, and I'll tell you why. Theodora Lestrange is a pale copy of Lady Julia, I'm afraid, unrestrainedly modern and not quite as interesting. There's not quite the same amount of wittiness that Lady Julia gave us time after time. There are also a lot of discrepancies in her character, especially when it came to her friendship with Cosmina.

I can't help but compare this romance to the one between Lady Julia and Brisbane in Raybourn's Silent series. I think the problem lies in the fact that, whereas the Lady Julia-Brisbane romance had time to evolve over a few novels, here the romance aspect simply seems rushed, and based more upon physical chemistry rather than emotional or mental (how many times are we told about how physically attractive the count is?). We're told over and over that there's a mental connection, but I'd rather see it firsthand.

I loved the premise of the book, and I wish that there had been more of the supernatural in it. Theodora is the ultimate skeptic, I know, but I would have liked to have seen more vampires, werewolves, strigoi, or whatever. This book had the potential to be extremely scary, but I thought it fell down in that aspect. Also (and this is a minor point but it annoyed me all the same), the author is very selective about the British spellings she uses (why "faery," for example, and not "mediaeval?").

Deanna Raybourn is a talented writer, and she knows her Victorian period extremely well. She's obviously put a lot of time and energy into the research and writing of this book, but I for one can't wait until she returns to the Lady Julia Grey series. If you're a newcomer to Deanna Rayboun's novels, this is probably not the place to start.

Whoops. This was a big surprise.
By OLT
So, a big fan of the three Lady Julia Grey novels by Deanna Raybourn, I preordered this book long ago, assuming it was the fourth Lady Julia book (I guess we know what that makes me) and forgot about it. It arrives this week and turns out to be a Gothic/vampire/werewolf plot, not my favorite genre. But I read it anyway, having paid for it and also being, as said, a big fan of Raybourn's other novels. And, to my surprise, I liked it. I found it to be well written, perhaps the characters not as well developed and three-dimensional as they could be, but the plot was fun, had a couple of unexpected things that happened, and, in general, the book could be read by someone who does not like the paranormal and prefers things that happen in the world to not be otherworldly. It has romance, mystery and murder. Could you ask for more?

Angieville: THE DEAD TRAVEL FAST
By Angela Thompson
For the last couple of weeks I've been obsessively checking my local bookstore's stock online to see if Deanna Raybourn's THE DEAD TRAVEL FAST just happened to get in early. Yes, I actually am that nerdy and it's much too late to do anything about it. But, in this case, the effort paid off as a nice, healthy stack of them awaited me on the "New Fiction" table when I dashed in from the rain on my way home from work. As you know, I am a devoted Lady Julia Grey fan. I adore that series and am anxiously awaiting the upcoming fourth installment--Dark Road to Darjeeling--due out this October. But when I heard she was working on a standalone historical set in Transylvania and featuring a would-be lady novelist and a mysterious count...well...I was equal parts intrigued and excited. Who knew what delights and promises it would hold?

Miss Theodora LeStrange has come to the end of her rope. When her grandfather and guardian passes away, her well-meaning if rather insipid brother-in-law takes it upon himself to determine what exactly is to be done with her. Terrified of what he will come up with, Theodora grasps at the nearest straw in the form of a letter from her old school friend Cosmina who now resides at Castle Dragulescu in Transylvania. She invites Theodora to come and stay in celebration of her approaching nuptials. A budding novelist, Theodora convinces her friend and publisher Charles Beecroft the experience will serve to inspire her imagination and fuel the novel she knows is lurking inside just waiting to be brought forth. Against their better judgement, her family and friends let her go and the adventure of a lifetime begins. Upon arrival Theodora is reunited with Cosmina and introduced to the aging Countess and her mysterious son--the newly appointed Count. In a land where the sinister is a daily occurrence and the horrifying merely commonplace, Theodora's imagination is more than stimulated. It is driven into overdrive as her Scottish pragmatism wars with the inexplicable and increasingly nightmarish events unfolding in this small Roumanian village at the edge of the world.

This was such an interesting read. It was at times exactly and not at all what I expected and my response to it evolved as the pages turned. I liked Theodora from the beginning. She is much more pragmatic, yet somehow less sure of herself than Julia Grey and I wondered how she would handle the--what seemed to me--clearly supernatural events at Castle Dragulescu. But just when you (and she) think you have the story and Count Andrei figured out, the narrative takes a meditative turn and you find yourself not at all sure. Perhaps it is merely smoke and mirrors and can all be explained away by an ancient grudge, a marital infidelity, or a genetic predisposition. And so the tale winds on, weaving back and forth between the mundane and the spectacular, never revealing its secrets. At first I was impatient to discover the truth, but it was when I gave myself up to the story that I enjoyed Deanna Raybourn's wonderfully gifted way with words. I was amazed at how seamless the writing and the dialogue were. Initially I wanted to like Andrei as much as I do Brisbane, but he is an entirely different breed of alpha male and not nearly as instantly likable. But he isn't meant to be, I don't think. Much more Rochester than Thornton from the word go. And once again, it was when I sat back and let it wash over me that I really was able to appreciate this novel for what it is--a pitch-perfect Victorian Gothic romance. And the ending was perfect. What a talent for endings Ms. Raybourn has and how much I look forward to each of her books--whatever style or genre they may be.

A Note: For Lady Julia Grey aficionados, there is a delightful little reference to that series hidden in THE DEAD TRAVEL FAST. It left a happily satisfied smile on my face. See if you can spot it.

Very touching.
By AK
A shortage of available Prayer Ambassadors at the busiest time of year means the Archangel Gabriel must once again call out the Angelic Three Musketeers to handle a trio of special requests. Outwardly, they appear to be simple; find a little boy a dog, help a young lady move past the pain of a long ago divorce, and give a dying old man peace about his wife's fate when he has gone to the light. In fact, God has already put in place the very tools they need to bring about their miracles. Even these three shouldn't be able to cause trouble with such easy requests. Well, make that not very much trouble, considering who we are discussing. Apparent simplicity aside, Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy find that their chosen recipients of grace come with problems that make the gifts hard to grant. Fortunately, they work for Someone who is very good with miracles.

***** Though this latest foray into the adventures of my favorite fictional heavenly messengers is perhaps less whacky than prior entries, I dare say it is by far the best. Long before the last page is turned, not only have I laughed, but have also been moved to the good sort of tears that cleanse as they hurt. Keep a tissue handy. This is a treasure of a book and worth every sniffle. There is plenty of comedy, but the way Where Angels Go touches your heart is the payoff. *****

What an incredible book.

What an incredible book. Once you start reading it, you won't be able to set it down. I even got yelled at by my boss for reading the book on company time. I've read it 4 times and each time is like the first time. There is alot of information to process so get ready be blown away. It's awsome. Also, if you missed reading Tino Georgiou's masterpiece--The Fates, go and read it.

Not great but...
By Evelyn S. Hlabse
This isn't great literature by any means but it is a fun read. I sat and read it as I watched Dancing With the Stars Result show. I love Shirley, Goodness and Mercy and hope they will be back again next Christmas. This is a good feel story with happy endings and we all need a happy ending. No murder, no mayhem, no bad language - just a fun book. You know starting off what is going to transpire but how it is going to happen keeps you guessing although I did guess on the Beth and Peter story. I'd recommend this as a feel good book and it would make a great stocking stuffer.

Grade 3-6-These attractive titles each feature six women who have had an impact in their fields. Many names will be familiar but each book also includes some women who are less well known. The biographies, generally three to five pages in length, are divided into sections that discuss each woman's "Early Years," "Developing Skills," and "Accomplishments." Sidebars, "Key Events," "Quick Notes," and boxed quotes provide additional facts and background. Each book concludes with brief notes about the contributions of 13 to 15 other women. An abundance of appealing black-and-white and full-color photographs and occasional maps and drawings illustrate the text. Although these books do not include the detailed information found in the "American Profiles" series (Facts On File), they will be useful for short reports or to supplement other resources.

Taken from "Marie Curie, Polish Physicist" In 1895, Marie married a French scientist called Pierre Curie. Two years later, after their daughter Irene was born, Marie began to work for her doctoral degree. As her research project, she chose to study uranium atoms. She wanted to find out why uranium rocks gave off mysterious waves or rays. She called these waves "radiation. "Within two months, Marie discovered two important things. First, she found that the strength of radiation depends on the amount of uranium in a piece of rock. Second, whatever she did to the uranium, the strength of the rays stayed the same. For example, whether she heated the uranium or mixed it with other substances, the amount of radiation did not change.

But then Allison is released to a halfway house, and is more determined than ever to speak with her estranged sister.

Now their legacy of secrets is focused on one little boy. And if the truth is revealed, the consequences will be unimaginable for the adoptive mother who loves him, the girl who tried to protect him and the two sisters who hold the key to all that is hidden.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Gudenkauf's scintillating second suspense novel (after The Weight of Silence) opens with the release of 21-year-old Allison Glenn from prison, where she has served five years for an unspecified but particularly horrible crime. Allison is reluctant to enter a halfway house in her hometown of Linden Falls, Iowa, where "even a heroin-addicted prostitute arrested for armed robbery and murder would get more compassion than I ever will." Allison, her family's former golden girl, secures a job at a local bookstore, but her efforts to resume some sort of normal life are undermined by her well-to-do parents' indifference, her sister's hatred, and the stigma of her conviction. Meanwhile, one little boy holds the key to the tragedy that led to Allison's imprisonment. The author slowly and expertly reveals the truth in a tale so chillingly real, it could have come from the latest headlines. (Feb.)

From Booklist
Four womens lives come together at one point of convergence: Joshua, a five-year-old boy. For two of the women, the connection is clear: Claire, Joshuas adoptive mother, went through hell to have a child, and Charm, who gave Joshua up after wrestling with her inability to care for him. The other two are more mysterious: Allison, once the golden girl of her small town, now a free woman after serving five years for a heinous murder, and her sister, Brynn, a fragile college student trying to move on from her sisters mistakes. Each woman observes the progression of Joshuas life while facing her own demons and making various decisions about motherhood and love. Gudenkaufs peripheral parental characters suffer from 2-D development: Allison and Brynns parents are cold for no real reason, and Charms mother is stereotypically trashy. Still, the core story will draw readers of domestic fiction. Those who like the exploration of motherhood from multiple perspectives might also enjoy OFarrells The Hand That First Held Mine (2009). --Courtney Jones

Reading with Tequila
By Jennifer Sicurella
These Things Hidden is all about secrets. As the story progresses, the past is revealed piece by piece. The story falls into place easily while offering shocking things, long hidden, yet never expected.

The book is written in alternating viewpoints between four different women all linked in some way to a little boy named Joshua. Each woman wants to ensure Joshua is safe and taken care if, even if they have different ideas and motives driving them.

The book begins with Allison being released from prison. She committed an unforgivable crime, the nature of which we don't learn until later in the book. Every bit of Allison's past is revealed at the perfect moment. Her story is traumatically heart-wrenching and you can't help but feel for her while at the same time hating her actions.

The story is scarily realistic for the world we live in today. Bad choices ruin lives. Good choices can just as easily take their toll. Love for family and the secrets we keep can lead down a road we aren't prepared to travel. These Things Hidden is a moving, beautifully written, absolutely compelling novel you won't want to miss.

Excellent Second Book
By Book Sp(l)ot Reviews
In These Things Hidden, much like she did in The Weight of Silence, Heather Gudenkauf uses the relationships--and intimacy--of a family and a small town to weave a literary tale that feels so real you'd sear it has to at least be 'based on' a true story. Like, Gudenkauf's debut, however, These Things Hidden is completely fictional and completely amazing.

After five years in prison, Allison Glenn is being released. And going home to Linden Falls. Former perfect girl, Allison, now only college aged, isn't going home to her parents, though. Both her parents and her former friends want nothing to do with her anymore.

None of that helps her transition, but the only one Allison is actually concerned with contacting is her sister, Brynn. Brynn, the one who stayed behind while Allison went to jail and went through high school with all the gossip and the town's whispers. And she's the only one, besides Allison, who really knows what happened that night, the night whose events sent Allison to jail.

A secret being kept between two sisters is tearing them apart, but if it gets out it threatens to tear much more apart--including the life of a young child and his adoptive parents.

For almost half of the story I thought that These Things Hidden was going to lack the mystery that The Weight of Silence had that was such a fundamental part of my enjoyment of the story. When things did really begin to develop, however, I was very pleasantly surprised and loved what it added to the tale.

The way that Heather Gudenkauf focuses on familial relationships and then works those families together through their relationships/friendships in the town is really brilliantly done. Not only does it expertly involve all of the characters in a way that a lot of books only strive to do, but because everyone is connected like they are, it makes it feel like a real story, where people are connected that way.

I loved The Weight of Silence so much and had high expectations for this one and I have to say it very much met my expectations. Heather Gudenkauf is an author I will not only be eagerly anticipating more from, but one I will gladly recommend to other--including you!

Wild, crazy, emotional ride!
By Candace Robinson
This was a crazy ride! At first I didn't know what was going on, what Allison had done that was so terrible. So I flew through the pages dying to know. In those pages I felt like I got to know Allison well enough that I couldn't imagine she had truly done something horrible. I couldn't imagine why everyone would be so hateful toward her. When I found out what her crime had been I just had to know WHY?!
This book alternates characters. We go to know Allison, the center of it all and the one who just got out of prison. We get to know her sister Brynn who is having a hard time dealing with her past, and her life in general. We get to know Charm who takes care of her stepfather as he dies and is going to school to be a nurse. Then we get to know Claire, the mother who adopted beautiful Joshua. We don't know how they all connect but as the story goes on we make connections. At times we assume things or put the puzzle together only to find out that the pieces don't fit.
A little past the middle I thought it was all figured out. I wondered why the author let us know everything already and wondered if it was all going to just take a bit to wrap up. But nope~ we don't know everything. There is still so much more to the story and it is one crazy emotional ride!
Through the first half of the book I was really liking it. I was thinking it was a 4 star book. It was easy to read and hard to put down. The mystery was intriguing and the characters were interesting. But it was just past the middle that I realized that it was an amazing story. It went from being really good to unbelievably good. I couldn't put the book down. I locked myself in the bathroom to avoid interruptions and flew through the book. I couldn't stop reading! The book is 400 pages, but I flew through it like it was 200.
This is an adult book, but I would say it's definitely appropriate for older young adults or young adults used to reading adult books.

Judas Kiss: A Taylor Jackson Novel, by J.T. Ellison

It was a murder made for TV: a trail of tiny bloody footprints. An innocent toddler playing beside her mother's bludgeoned body. Pretty young Corinne Wolff, seven months pregnant, brutally murdered in her own home.

Cameras and questions don't usually faze Nashville homicide lieutenant Taylor Jackson, but the media frenzy surrounding the Wolff case is particularly nasty…and thorough. When the seemingly model mommy is linked to an amateur porn Web site with underage actresses and unwitting players, the sharks begin to circle.

The shock is magnified when an old adversary uses the sexy secret footage to implicate Taylor in a murder—an accusation that threatens her career, her reputation and her relationship.

Both cases hinge on the evidence—real or manufactured—of crimes that go beyond passion, into the realm of obsessive vengeance and shocking betrayal. Just what the networks love.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Carefully orchestrated plot twists and engrossing characters combine in Ellison's explosive third Lt. Taylor Jackson investigation (after 2008's 14). Nashville homicide investigator Taylor is called to the scene of a disturbing murder: beautiful, pregnant Corrine Wolff, brutally beaten in front of her young daughter. Signs point to Corinne's husband, Todd, but Taylor has her doubts. When she learns that the Wolffs were making and distributing amateur pornography, other investigators in her office turn up old X-rated footage of Taylor that could destroy her career and her engagement to FBI agent John Baldwin. Meanwhile, an old enemy of John's has resurfaced and is intent on revenge. The story moves at breakneck speed, seamlessly flowing from Taylor's world into John's until they intersect for electrifying results. Flawed yet identifiable characters and genuinely terrifying villains populate this impressive and arresting thriller. (Jan.)

Kiss of gold book: Ellison's written another stellar thriller
By B. G. Ritts
JUDAS KISS is the third in Ms. Ellison's Taylor Jackson series. Each of the books has built comfortably on the previous ones (ALL THE PRETTY GIRLS and 14) and gotten better. The voice is clear and the plotting first rate. There are enough twists to keep any thriller reader engrossed, and the release of information to the reader about the killer occurs at the most interesting moments.

I am trying to figure out why this author doesn't have a hardback publishing contract yet. Her stories are well worth the time invested. JUDAS KISS is a definite sit down and read it all at once, and also a read it slowly so it doesn't end too soon. Highly recommended -- as I would all J.T. Elllison's books.

Want to add a great new author to your collection?
By C. Driskell
I don't read too many new books (I spend much of my time in books written before my time) but stumbled upon JT Ellison's "All The Pretty Girls" last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. When "14" came out, I devoured it as well. As you might imagine, I was waiting on "Judas Kiss" and--man, oh man--it did not disappoint. While there are many common threads with her previous books, including the protagonist Taylor and the venerable Dr. Baldwin, this book crackles with an excitement and magnitude that makes the reader know that Ellison is onto something special. Reading "Judas Kiss" reminded me of when I first read "The Firm" and "Chiefs"--my first exposure to Grisham and Woods. I remember knowing, about halfway through each book, that the author was going to do great things. "Judas" gave me the exact same feeling.

Prepare yourself for a thrill ride of scares, turn-ons, shockers and twists--you will not want to put it down. It's not too short, not too long. And if you have the time, you'll read it in two days like I did. I hope you enjoy it as much as me.

Wonderful thriller
By Tina
Amazingly, I had never heard of J.T. Ellison before reading this book. After I googled her, I discovered that she has quite a nice selection of books and all appear to have been highly rated.

In Judas Kiss, we find our main character Taylor Jackson back again! She is a tough homicide lientenant and she is called to a particularly gruesome murder scene - one worthy of a media frenzy. The body of a young, pregnant woman by the name of Corinne Wolff is found - lying right next to her toddler, who is thankfully very much alive. So, who killed this young, healthy woman??

After some investigating, it appears that our victim, Corinne was involved in a porn ring. Little does Taylor know that this victim is also connected to another case - one being handled by Taylor's love interest Baldwin.

As Taylor becomes personnally involved in the porn ring investigation, in more ways than she cares to admit, long-held secrets will be revealed, threatening to shatter all that is dear to her.

I really loved this author. She has a way of writing the storyline that kept me holding my breath and I didn't even realize I was doing it! There are twists and turns that I never saw coming and the plotline is intricate enough to have kept me guessing.

I am thrilled that I have found a new author and look forward to going backwards to read all of Ellison's books.

Marcie Sullivan buried her Iraq War–veteran husband a year ago after watching him suffer from battle injuries for three years, and she just can’t seem to move on with her life. Deciding to find his missing best friend, she travels the back roads of Humboldt County, California, looking for the hero who has become a hermit. After visiting Virgin River, she finds Ian Buchanan living in a primitive cabin with no amenities. Ian growls at her, but she refuses to leave, almost dying of hypothermia until he rescues her, then nurses her back to health. With the specter of Bobby between them, they finally forge a friendship but feel much more than that. All Carr’s Virgin River regulars are here, turning this sometimes tearful tale into a warm, fuzzy read. Strong women, honorable ex-marines, and rural dangers, the hallmarks of this life-affirming, feel-good series, are all here. --Diana Tixier Herald

Marcie's husband, Bobby, came back from war in Iraq with a spinal injury and in critical condition, he never recovered. For more than three years Marcie cared for him and nursed him, always grateful for the time they still had. The person responsible for that time was Bobby's best friend and Sergeant, Ian. Ian had saved Bobby in Iraq and he managed to look in on or write Marcie when he had the chance. Then suddenly he went missing. No one had seen or heard from Ian in years. It's been almost a year since Bobby has passed away and Marcie has made it her mission to find Ian. She wants to talk to him about what happened, make sure he's OK and finally have some closure.

Her search leads her to the northern California mountain town called Virgin River. She finds her man, though hardly recognizable, and begins the last chapter of her healing process.

This is the 4th Virgin River book, though the time frame takes place approximately midway through the 3rd book, Whispering Rock. Marcie is a feisty little heroine and although she has been through the unthinkable she is a modern day Pollyanna. She never regretted that her husband came home to her half alive, instead she savored and embraced each second they were given.

Ian has his battle scars, but his emotional scars are what have him living a hermit like existence in the mountains. Taking one day at a time, he never stood a chance when Marcie came knocking on his door. Two people dealing with loss in very different ways, manage to find some common ground and help one another more than they anticipated.

This was a fantastic addition to the series. The scenes written about Bobby are painful to read. I had tears in my eyes, a lump in my throat and an ache in my heart. The writing made it so real I couldn't keep from sobbing. Despite the depressing nature that brings these two people together, the book was full of laughs. Marcie is sarcastic and sassy and she and Ian had me cracking up. Visits from the Virgin River folks we have come to know and love only enhance this tale. A wonderful Christmas tale; friendship, love, healing and happily ever after.

Fun read but a departure from the series
By Bubba's mom
I had been reading the series and REALLY enjoying them. This book seemed almost a departure from the "family of charachters" I'd been getting to know if the first 3 books. It's a nice, easy read and I did enjoy it but as I was reading it I was wishing I was on to book 5 and back to "my new friends in Virgin River." If you skip over this book, you will not miss anything from the rest of the gang.

More like 4 1/2 stars....
By Deborah Wiley
Marcie Sullivan has been searching for Ian Buchanan, the best friend of her deceased husband. Ian saved Bobby's life in Fallujah, brought him back home to Marcie, and then disappeared. Marcie wants to deliver Bobby's treasured baseball card collection to Ian and understand why he deserted them during Bobby's last years of life.

Ian is tucked away in Virgin River, quietly living life on the outskirts. Marcie is a reminder of a past he wants to forget, but Marcie's stubborn nature just won't let go. Maybe this Christmas will be one to remember....

No one does contemporary romance quite like Robyn Carr! Her Virgin River series exemplifies why she is so beloved and A VIRGIN RIVER CHRISTMAS only continues her tradition of producing superb romances.

While A VIRGIN RIVER CHRISTMAS can be read as a stand alone, the nuances of the town and the various people populating Virgin River will be better appreciated if read in the context of the series as a whole. Part of what makes the Virgin River series so unique is the town itself as it is practically a character. Robyn Carr captures the beauty and the harshness of a small, isolated town and brings it vividly alive. Ian and Marcie are perfect additions to such a town as they both have their own burdens to bear.

A VIRGIN RIVER CHRISTMAS isn't always an easy read but it's a very satisfying one. Ian's journey hasn't been an easy one and the emotional scars run deep. Only a woman as stubborn as Marcie could break through his barriers. Robyn Carr shows the grieving and healing processes quite well, almost too well as there are some scenes that should come with a warning that Kleenex will be needed. A VIRGIN RIVER CHRISTMAS is a tearjerker that is highly recommended!

Ruth Shelton hurried out of her classroom-management lecture at the University of Washington, where she was completing her master's of education degree. Clutching her books, she dashed across campus, in a rush to get home. By now the mail would have been delivered to her small rental house three blocks from the school.

"Ruth," Tina Dupont called, stopping her in mid-flight. "There's another antiwar rally this afternoon at—"

"Sorry, I've got to run," Ruth said, jogging past her friend and feeling more than a little guilty. Other students cleared a path for her; wherever she was headed must have seemed urgent—and it was, but only to her. Since Christmas, four months ago, she'd been corresponding with Sergeant Paul Gordon, USMC, who was stationed in Afghanistan. There'd been recent reports of fighting, and she hadn't received a letter or an email from Paul in three days. Three interminable days. Not since they'd initially begun their correspondence had there been such a lapse. Paul usually wrote every day and she did, too. They emailed as often as possible. Ruth had strong feelings about the war in Iraq, although her opinions didn't match those of her parents.

Earlier in the school year, Ruth had been part of a protest rally on campus. But no matter what her political views on the subject, she felt it was important to support American troops wherever they might be serving. In an effort to do that, Ruth had voluntarily mailed a Christmas card and letter to a nameless soldier.

Paul Gordon was the young man who'd received that Christmas card, and to Ruth's surprise he'd written her back and enclosed his photograph. Paul was from Seattle and he'd chosen her card because of the Seattle postmark. He'd asked her lots of questions—about her history, her family, her interests—and closed with a postscript that said he hoped to hear from her again.

When she first got his letter, Ruth had hesitated. She felt she'd done her duty, supported the armed services in a way she was comfortable doing. This man she'd never met was asking her to continue corresponding with him. She wasn't sure she wanted to become that involved. Feeling uncertain, she'd waited a few days before deciding.

During that time, Ruth had read and reread his letter and studied the head shot of the clean-cut handsome marine sergeant in dress uniform. His dark brown eyes had seemed to stare straight through her—and directly into her heart. After two days, she answered his letter with a short one of her own and added her email address at the bottom of the page. Ruth had a few concerns she wanted him to address before she could commit herself to beginning this correspondence. Being as straightforward and honest as possible, she explained her objections to the war in Iraq. She felt there was a more legitimate reason for troops to be in Afghanistan and wanted to know his stand. A few days later he emailed her. Paul didn't mince words. He told her he believed the United States had done the right thing in entering Iraq and gave his reasons. He left it up to her to decide if she wanted to continue their correspondence. Ruth emailed him back and once again listed her objections to the American presence in the Middle East. His response came a day later, suggesting they "agree to disagree." He ended the email with the same question he'd asked her earlier. Would she write him?

At first, Ruth wasn't going to. They were diametrically opposed in their political views. But in the end, even recognizing the conflict between their opinions, she did write. Their correspondence started slowly. She enjoyed his wry wit and his unflinching determination to make a difference in the world. His father had fought in Vietnam, he said, and in some ways the war in Afghanistan seemed similar—the hostile terrain, the unpredictability of the enemy, the difficult conditions. For her part, she mentioned that at twenty-five she'd returned to school to obtain her master's of education degree. Then, gradually, without being fully aware of how it had happened, Ruth found herself spending part of every day writing or emailing Paul. Despite the instant nature of email, and its convenience, they both enjoyed interspersing their online messages with more formal letters. There was something so…permanent about a real letter. As well, depending on his duty assignment, Paul didn't always have computer access.

After they'd been corresponding regularly for a couple of months, Paul asked for her picture. Eventually she'd mailed him her photograph, but only after she'd had her hair and makeup done at one of those "glamour" studios. Although she wasn't fashion-model beautiful, she considered herself fairly attractive and wanted to look her absolute best for Paul, although she didn't entirely understand why it mattered so much. For years, she'd been resigned to the fact that she wasn't much good at relationships. In high school she'd been shy, and while she was an undergraduate, she'd dated a little but tended to be reserved and studious. Her quiet manner didn't seem to appeal to the guys she met. It was only when she stepped in front of a classroom that she truly became herself. She loved teaching, every single aspect of it. In the process, Ruth lost her hesitation and her restraint, and to her astonishment discovered that this enthusiasm had begun to spill over into the rest of her life. Suddenly men started to notice her. She enjoyed the attention—who wouldn't?—and had dated more in the past few months than in the preceding four years.

For the picture, her short brown hair had been styled in loose curls. Her blue eyes were smiling and friendly, which was exactly the impression she hoped to convey. She was a little shocked by the importance of Paul's re-action—by her need that he find her attractive.

She waited impatiently for his response. A week later she received an email. Paul seemed to like what he saw in her photograph and soon they were writing and emailing back and forth at a feverish pace. A day without some form of communication from Paul felt empty now.

Ruth had never had a long-distance relationship before, and the growing intensity of her feelings for this man she'd never met took her by surprise. She wasn't a teenager with a schoolgirl crush. Ruth was a mature, responsible adult. Or at least she had been until she slipped a simple Christmas card into the mailbox—and got a reply from a handsome marine sergeant named Paul Gordon.

Ruth walked quickly to the rental house she shared with Lynn Blumenthal, then ran up the front steps to the porch. Lynn was eighteen and away from home and family for the first time. The arrangement suited both of them, and despite the disparity in their ages and interests, they'd gotten along fairly well. With her heart pounding hard, Ruth forced herself to draw in a deep breath as she started toward the mailbox.

The screen door flew open and Lynn came out. "What are you doing home?" she asked, then shook her head. "Never mind, I already know. You're looking for a letter from soldier boy."

Ruth wasn't going to deny the obvious. "I haven't heard from him in three days."

Lynn rolled her eyes. "I don't understand you."

"I know." Ruth didn't want to get into another discussion with her roommate. Lynn had made her feelings about this relationship known from the outset, although as Ruth had gently tried to tell her, it was none of her business. That didn't prevent the younger woman from expressing her views. Lynn said that Ruth was only setting herself up for heartache. A part of Ruth actually agreed, but by the time she realized what was happening, she was emotionally involved with Paul.

"You hardly ever see Clay anymore," Lynn chastised, hands on her hips. "He called and asked about you the other night."

Ruth stared at the small black mailbox. "Clay and I are just friends."

"Not according to him."

It was true that they'd been seeing each other quite a bit following a Halloween party last October. Like her, Clay Matthews was obtaining his master's of education, and they seemed to have a lot in common. But her interest in him had started to wane even before she'd mailed that Christmas card to Paul. The problem was, Clay hadn't noticed.

"I'm sorry he's disappointed."

"Clay is decent and hardworking, and the way you've treated him the last few months is…is terrible." Lynn, who at five foot ten stood a good seven inches taller than Ruth, could be intimidating, especially with her mouth twisted in that grimace of disapproval.

Ruth had tried to let Clay down easily, but it hadn't worked. They'd gone to the library together last Thursday. Unfortunately, that had been a mistake. She'd known it almost right away when Clay pressured her to have coffee with him afterward. It would've been better just to end the relationship and forget about staying friends. He was younger, for one thing, and while that hadn't seemed important earlier, it did now. Perhaps it was wrong to compare him to Paul, but Ruth couldn't help it. Measured against Paul, Clay seemed immature, demanding and insecure.

"You said he phoned?" Frowning, she glanced at Lynn.

Lynn nodded. "He wants to know what's going on."

Oh, brother! Ruth couldn't have made it plainer had she handed him divorce papers. Unwilling to be cruel, she'd tried to bolster his ego by referring to all the positive aspects of his personality—but apparently, that had only led him to think the opposite of what she was trying to tell him. He'd refused to take her very obvious hints, and in her frustration, she'd bluntly announced that she wasn't interested in seeing him anymore. That seemed pretty explicit to her; how he could be confused about it left Ruth shaking her head.

The fact that he'd phoned and cried on her roommate's shoulder was a good example of what she found adolescent about his behavior. She was absolutely certain Paul would never do that. If he had a problem, he'd take it directly to the source.

"I think you're being foolish," Lynn said, and added, "Not that you asked my opinion."

"No, I didn't," Ruth reminded her, eyeing the mailbox again. There was an ornamental latticework design along the bottom, and looking through it, she could tell that the day's mail had been delivered. The envelope inside was white, and her spirits sank. There had to be something from Paul. If not a real letter, then an email.

"He wanted me to talk to you," Lynn was saying.

"Who did?" Ruth asked distractedly. She was dying to open the mailbox, but she wanted to do it in privacy.

"Clay" Lynn cried, sounding completely exasperated. "Who else are we talking about?"

Suddenly Ruth understood. She looked away from the mailbox and focused her attention on Lynn. "You're attracted to him, aren't you?"

Lynn gasped indignantly. "Don't be ridiculous."

"Sit down," Ruth said, gesturing toward the front steps, where they'd often sat before. It was a lovely spring afternoon, the first week of April, and she needed to clear the air with her roommate before this got further out of hand.

"What?" Lynn said with a defensive edge. "You've got the wrong idea here. I was just trying to help a friend."

"Sit," Ruth ordered.

"I have class in twenty minutes and I—" Lynn paused, scowling at her watch.

"Sit down."

The eighteen-year-old capitulated with ill grace. "All right, but I know what you're going to say." She folded her arms and stared straight ahead.

"I'm fine with it," Ruth said softly. "Go out with him if you want. Like I said earlier, I'm not interested in Clay."

"You would be if it wasn't for soldier boy."

Ruth considered that and in all honesty felt she could say, "Not so."

"I don't understand you," Lynn lamented a second time. "You marched in the rally against the war in Iraq. Afghanistan isn't all that different, and now you're involved with Paul what's-his-face and it's like I don't even know you anymore."

"Paul doesn't have anything to do with this."

"Yes, he does," Lynn insisted.

"I'm not going to have this conversation with you. We agree on some points and disagree on others. That's fine. We live in a free society and we don't have to have the same opinion on these issues or anything else."

Lynn sighed and said nothing.

"I have the feeling none of this is really about Paul," Ruth said with deliberate patience. She hadn't known Lynn very long; they lived separate lives and so far they'd never had a problem. As roommates went, Ruth felt she was fortunate to have found someone as amicable as Lynn. She didn't want this difference of opinion about Clay—and Paul—to ruin that.

The other girl once again looked pointedly at her watch, as if to suggest Ruth say what she intended to say and be done with it.

"I don't want to see Clay," she said emphatically.

"You might have told him that."

"I tried."

Lynn glared at her. "You should've tried harder."

Ruth laughed, but not because she was amused. For whatever reason, Clay had set his sights on her and wasn't about to be dissuaded. Complicating matters, Lynn was obviously interested in him and feeling guilty and unsure of how to deal with her attraction.

"Listen," Ruth said. "I didn't mean to hurt Clay. He's a great guy and—"

"You shouldn't have lied to him."

Ruth raised her eyebrows. "When did I lie to him?"

"Last week you said you were going to visit your grandmother in Cedar Cove and that was why you couldn't go out with him this weekend. I overheard you," she murmured.

Have only read one story so far, but it was amazing!
By Heathercm2001
So far, I've only read When We Touch by Brenda Novak. I'm excited to read the other stories because I'm sure they are just as wonderful. Here is my review for When We Touch.

I've been reading the Whiskey Creek books out of order. I started with #3 then read #4, but now I have gone back to where it all started. This series has a great group of characters, and I have had no trouble following along even though I have not read them in order. However, this novella has added quite a bit to the story. I can't wait to read #1 and #2 now. It will add so much more depth and detail to the Whiskey Creek I know. You can't go wrong with this series. Even if you are reading it out of order. If you want to just try the series and see if you like it, this novella is a great place to start!

a delightful holiday anthology from four of today's top contemporary romance authors...
By Virginia Campbell
Four of today's top contemporary romance authors come "Together for Christmas" in a delightful holiday anthology. This collection is a decoratively covered repackaging of previously issued small-town Christmas stories from Debbie Macomber, Brenda Novak, Sheila Roberts, and RaeAnne Thayne. "5-B Poppy Lane", by Debbie Macomber, is set in the fictional community of Cedar Cove, Washington. A powerfully poignant story of new love and the echoes of timeless romance, this is also a very patriotic story. There's a reason why Debbie Macomber is one of the world's most beloved writers--the lady is a very gifted storyteller. Following "5-B Poppy Lane" are three stories from equally talented authors. Brenda Novak's "When We Touch" is set in her fictional community of Whiskey Creek, California during a Victorian Days Christmas celebration. When one sister not only steals away the other sister's boyfriend, and then marries him, can time make way for healing and forgiveness? Sheila Roberts offers a "Welcome to Icicle Falls", a small town in Washington State. Told with her trademark humor, this enjoyable tale of romantic reminiscence from the daughter of the owner of the Sweet Dreams Chocolate Factory will leave a smile on your face. Author RaeAnne Thane tells the charmingly romantic tale of a kindergarten teacher in Pine Gulch, Idaho who is "Starstruck" when the father of one of her students turns out to be the former movie star who was once her own major crush. Can the student teach the adults a lesson in love as she works her match-making ways? Settle down in your favorite reading place with a big mug of cocoa and generous plate of Christmas cookies and enjoy this quartet of happy holiday romances.
