It's a little hard to describe this book.
By mahikahn
20 years ago Destiny went home to take care of her orphaned nephews. Instead of going with her William (her lover) was hurt because she never asked him to go along. He however, was the one who made the airline reservations, just for her. That sort of sent a message. After having lived together for three years he shouldn't have to be asked. He should have just automatically gone because he loved her and wanted to support her.

Now William decides he wants her back so he spends several years going after her family business figuring eventually he'll lure her over to England because of this. The guy is over 50 years old, something a little less immature might have worked a whole lot sooner? Like simply going to her, telling her he loved her and ask her to take him back. It just didn't make sense.

And her nephew Richard was so self centered and overbearing, deciding he knew best for Destiny even if it meant she wouldn't get the personal life she wanted and had given up for family. Although I have to say that was the only time his focus left his job. He definitely paid little attention to his wife and new baby.

The book was confusing because the plot never made any sense. Actually Destiny seemed to be the only one who acted like an adult.

This isn't a bad book but definitely one I wouldn't read again.

A cute story
By A Customer
I liked this book very much. In fact, I couldn't put it down, so I read it all in one night. I liked how the main characters were middle aged and still vibrant. There was a tragic part of the whole story that they had let so much time go by before finding each other again, but there was also a sweetness to the story that would not have been there without the heartbreak. The nieces and nephews were delightful and I am hoping that there will be more books about them in the future. We know that Destiny had something to do with their marriages, so perhaps this will become the first book in a series.

From Booklist
In the latest installment in Woods’ Ocean Breeze series (Sand Castle Bay, 2013), another Castle sister, Gabriella, struggles to find herself, and love. Woodworker and widower Wade Johnson immediately fell for workaholic PR agent Gabi, but to no avail. Now that she’s out of a job, pregnant, and back in town where her grandmother owns a beach restaurant, he thinks he can finally convince her to marry him. Wade’s sister, however, isn’t sure this is a good idea. Wade’s wife was pregnant when she died, and, as far as the sister is concerned, he’s courting heartbreak by falling for another pregnant woman. As Wade goes out of his way to prove that he’s Gabi’s rock, she struggles with whether she should keep the baby, what she’s going to do for work, and where she’s going to live. Once again, the three Castle sisters and their grandmother get together to tackle one sister’s dilemma, while setting up a love interest for another. Readers who adore talky family dramas will again dote on Woods’ newest romance. --Pat Henshaw

Really enjoying the series
By Brandy Dorsch (Romancebookworm's Reviews)
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is the second book in the Ocean Breeze series and I really enjoyed it. This series takes place in the area that I am from so it makes me long for warm summer nights and sitting on the beach with a lover.
Gabi is the middle sister and the one that has always seemed to have her life together. Until now. When an unexpected pregnancy knocks her for a loop, Gabi isn't sure which way is up. The PR firm that she has given her all to, tells her that unwed mothers are not the image they want and she is let go. She returns home in order to figure out what her next step is and to get her life in order.
Wade is a carpenter that has had feelings for Gabi for a very long time. He amazed me with the patience and understanding that he showed for Gabi. Guys like that are what I call "Forever guys." They are the ones that will be there no matter what. I married one.

Really badly researched
By James J Frantz
While maybe a good page turner for someone who doesn't know about submarines, this book was far too painful to read for me. I spent 20 years in nuclear subs, including CO, and I just couldn't get past the horrible depiction of submarine ops. Leaving only 8 men on duty! Reactor plant unmanned! Really?? The implication that old reactors were more dangerous than new ones was the last straw. If you know subs, or read Clancy's book, don't waste your time one this book

44 of 47 people found the following review helpful.
This is the worst Submarine Novel ever printed!
By Jack Neff
Good Lord, did these two do any research at all?? As James J Frantz said I couldn't complete the book neither could I. There is nothing factual about submarine ops in it at all. The Navy Jargon was completely incompetent. i.e. Skeleton Group should be Skeleton Crew, Officers Wardroom - there is only one Wardroom and it is for officers. This submarine had the ability to down aircraft?? Not since WWII. Submarines have surface search radar not air search. I could go on and on. I've spent 10 years riding submarines and found this book so inaccurate in every respect to a real submarine. And the Political Correctness i.e. Black Senator with a white red headed wife, a disabled son and a lesbian daughter??? All they needed was a pregnant, lesbian, Spanish speaking nun of Jewish parents to cover all the minorities. The PC intent of this book is sickening. To Mr. and Mrs. Authors for God's sake do a little research before you write anything else.

One of the best heroines ever.
By Liz
Although it's still my most fervent hope to see Pamela Morsi writing historical romantic fiction again, that does nothing to lessen how good her contemporary stories are. It doesn't change the fact that I spent all day yesterday--when, believe me, I didn't have the time--reading MR. RIGHT GOES WRONG. Mazy's past presents her as almost an anti-heroine, but by the time you finish the first chapter, you'll know better; she's someone you probably know and you hope you were nice to in high school. Or maybe she's who you were in high school. Either way, both she and her friend Karly will earn places in your heart. So will Eli, the man who is almost too good at pretending, and Tru, Mazy's son, who is a hero-in-waiting.

Mr. Right Goes Wrong by Pamela Morsi is a wonderful novel about starting over and finding love when least expected. Next door neighbors and childhood friends Mazy Gulliver and Eli Latham have had a couple of ill-fated romances in the past, but with Mazy’s sudden return, is it finally their chance for lasting happiness? Or will Mazy’s past and Eli’s doubts destroy their future together?

Moving back to her small hometown with her fourteen year old son, Tru, Mazy is determined to get her life back on track. Unfortunately, the only person whom she can irrefutably count on to give her the job she desperately needs is her ex, Tad Driscoll. Her relief at her new beginning is tempered by the mistrust her new job as a loan collector engenders in the small town but luckily, she can count on her friendship with Eli to bolster her sometimes flagging self-confidence.

Mazy is painfully honest and refreshingly upfront about her past mistakes. There are a multitude of reasons behind her unfortunate selections when it comes to men, but she finally has a better idea of what precipitated her poor choices and she is not going to slip back into her old habits. The first step in her new, improved life is renewing her friendship with Eli, and she is stunned at the changes in her perception of Eli. For the first time, she sees him as the sexy, attractive man he has become instead of the boy next door.

Eli has been in love with Mazy most of his life and despite how badly things ended between them years earlier, he harbors no ill will towards her. The two eagerly pick up where they left off, but this time around, Eli is not going to let Mazy slip through his fingers. After watching her fall for bad boy after bad boy, he devises what he thinks is a foolproof plan that will keep her from leaving him. Instead of being the nice, loving, thoughtful man he really is, Eli puts his harebrained scheme into motion and morphs into the insensitive, selfish, offensive boyfriend she is trying to avoid.

It is very difficult to watch the relationship between Mazy and Eli unfold. She is so hopeful that she is entering into a new phase in her life and the fact that Eli is willing to let her back in his life is an unexpected bonus. Her confusion over his conflicting behaviors is heartbreaking and I hated seeing her self-doubts return. Mazy put up with his bad behavior for far too long, but in end? It was completely worth it because it showed her how much she had truly changed from the person she used to be.

Eli is such a nice guy that he lets people take advantage of him and in the beginning, it is easy to overlook his horrendous decision. He takes some really bad advice to heart and his past experiences with Mazy also play a role in the conclusions he reaches. Some of his reasoning is well-intentioned, and he finds it very difficult to be deliberately hurtful. But things go a little too far when he begins to relish some of his hurtful actions and when his plan falls apart, I was thrilled by how Mazy handled the entire situation.

With Mr. Right Goes Wrong, Pamela Morsi delivers yet another thought-provoking and dynamic novel that is sweet, hopeful and just a little poignant. The characters are flawed and imperfect and although watching them deal with life’s harsher moments is sometimes painful, it is incredibly gratifying watching them triumph over their problems. The romance between Eli and Mazy is touching and although they endure a few rough spots, their happily ever after is definitely worth the heartache.

Mr. Right Goes Wrong is another delightful novel by one of my favorite authors that I highly recommend.

I received a complimentary copy for review.

Not so Much!!
By Love to Read
I am a big Pamela Morsi fan and I usually love her books, but this was definitely not my favorite! The premise just didn't ring true. A nice guy purposely becomes a total rat! Sorry, even if it was all in his "plan" to win the heroine, it made for a lousy plot!! Sue me but I like a hero to actually act like a hero and not some scummy jerk all the time! I actually took about twice as long to read this book as I usually do, and the reason was because I kept wanting to put it down and not pick it back up! I'll have to reread an older Morsi novel to take the bad taste out of my mouth. Stick with what works Ms. Morsi!

So if the bullshit I wrote was true, then why the hell didn't I practice what I made so much money preaching? You know, that whole "live in the moment" and "milk the joy out of every second of your life" bit.

I should. I knew I should. It was just a hell of a lot easier to tell other people what to do than to do it myself. Because, seriously, if I were giving advice to me—and I was, because my inner bitch never shuts the hell up—the conversation would go something like this:

Inner Bitch: "Say it back."

Me: "I can't say it back."

IB: "Why the hell can't you? He said it. He laid it right out there for you. He said, I love you. And what did you say back to him?"

Me, flooded with shame: "I said, 'You're shitting me.'"

IB: "Yeah. Real romantic."

Me: "I was fucking surprised. Shocked. I wasn't ready." IB: "No one's ever ready, dumb-ass. You still have to say it back."

Me: "It's too late now. I let the moment pass." IB: "He's waiting for you to say it back."

Me: "Or maybe he's changed his mind. He hasn't said it again, after all."

IB: "Why would he say it again? That would be like sticking his finger into a socket for the second time, hoping for a different result. Say it. Or you're gonna lose him."

Me: "I'm not gonna lose him."

I glanced across the car at my favorite cop and silenced the imaginary conversation in my head. Actually, it wasn't all that imaginary. My inner bitch and I had been having it over and over again since that night by the campfire a couple of weeks ago when I'd absolutely blown the chance to move this relationship up to the next level.

And I was sure there was no getting that moment back.

I was also sure that things had been a little awkward between Mason and me since then. My fault, I knew. I hadn't responded the way I wished I had. But dammit, I was scared shitless to think of changing anything about this thing between the two of us. It was good. It was more than good. It was freakin' amazing. It was bliss. Why fix what isn't broken? Why move things to another place when the place they're in is so damned wonderful? Why risk screwing it up? Why?

He looked at me, caught me staring. "What? Have I got fettuccine on my face?"

"No. You have gorgeous on your face. It's all over you, in fact. Damn irritating."

He smiled, flashing the dimple of doom. "Thanks."

"De nada."

Say it. Tell him. Just tell him. You can't leave him hanging another minute.

I hated to admit it, but Inner Bitch was kinda right.

"So," I said, as we rounded a corner, "Mason, um, I've been meaning to, uh, you know talk to you about—"

"Holy shit!" He hit the brakes so hard that my seat belt hurt me. Then he jerked the wheel, gunned the car to get us out of the road and hit the brakes again. I saw the flames, then the people standing around outside—one filming everything on his damn smartphone—and then Mason was getting out of the car and shouting at me to call 911 as he ran toward the chaos.

"Mason, wait, where the hell are you—" I jumped out of the car, too, phone to my ear, running after him.

"Mason!"

"Nine-one-one, what's your emergency?"

"Um, house fire. Big one. Right off State Route 26 near Glenn Aubry."

"Yes, help is on the way, ma'am."

I clicked off and shoved the phone into my pocket, running now, despite my killer heels, because Mason hadn't slowed down. Someone was screaming that there were kids trapped inside, and I wanted to punch them in the face, because there would be no stopping him now. Mason and kids was like me and…bulldogs.

Somehow I caught up to him and grabbed his arm from behind. Smoke stung my eyes and throat, and the heat was like a living thing. There was roaring and smoke, that acrid smell of burning stuff that wasn't like any other smell. House fires didn't smell like wood fires or campfires. They smelled like destruction.

He glanced back at me, removed my hand firmly, looked me right in the eyes and said, "I have to."

"I know you do." Dammit, dammit, dammit.

And then he was gone again, pulling his shirt up over his face and charging right through the front door, into the jaws of hell.

I swore it got hotter and wondered if that was because he'd just provided additional fuel.

You really should've told him.

"I know, Inner Bitch. I know."

I stood there for what felt like a hundred and ten minutes but in truth was really only two. Fire trucks came screaming up. I ran over to the first one that stopped, jumped up on the running board and yanked the door open, startling the firefighters inside. "Hurry. My detective is in there!"

"Your—"

"Someone said there were kids inside. Detective Mason Brown went charging in to save them. Go get them out. Now."

"We've got a cop inside!" the driver shouted to his fellows as he jumped out. By then more men were jumping out of the other trucks. Hoses had been unrolled and water was cranked on. They all started beating the hell out of the flames with their hoses. A couple of them, wearing so much gear I didn't know how they could walk upright, ran inside.

I'd never seen anything like this fire. No matter how much water they put onto it, it kept burning, kept coming back to life, like one of those trick birthday candles you can't blow out. The crowd had backed up into the street now. Neighbors in their bathrobes and slippers, some of them even barefoot, shaking their heads and muttering to each other, and hugging their kids close to them. I glimpsed them in my peripheral vision but couldn't take my eyes off the front door. Flames were shooting from the roof and licking out from every window. I was way too close. My face felt like it was getting an extreme sunburn. Someone grabbed my arm and said I should move back, but I just jerked away from his touch and stared at that door.

"Universe, if you take him from me, I swear I'll never write another word. Don't you dare even think about—"

Then I saw him. Mason came stumbling out the front door with a limp, unmoving child in each arm, their heads bouncing against his shoulders. They were both bundled in blankets. He wasn't. His whole face was black with soot and he dropped to his knees before he even got clear of the flaming wreck of a house, just at the bottom of the front steps. Firefighters surged around him. The first two took the kids, unmoving in their blankets, and the next two picked Mason up by either arm and carried him across the lawn. Someone shoved a gurney under him, and his bearers dropped him onto it as it trundled toward a waiting ambulance.

The crowd closed between us, but I fought my way through it to get to his side, elbowed myself up close, grabbed hold of his hand, and saw that the skin was peeling off it and sticking to mine. I sort of yelped and yanked my hand away, and swore and cried all at once. The EMTs were working quickly, putting an oxygen mask on him and then cutting away his shirt to reveal that his left arm was badly burned, and the flesh underneath was trying to come away with the ravaged fabric.

Oh, God, it looked awful! They draped a clean white cloth over his arm and started soaking it in bottles of sterile water. I'd lost track of the kids. I think they'd been put into the back of another ambulance, and I knew they were as surrounded by EMTs as Mason was. But I couldn't take my eyes off him. His eyes were closed. He wasn't moving.

When one of the guys adjusted the oxygen mask, he smeared the black away from Mason's cheek, and I realized it was soot, not charred skin, and almost sank to the ground in relief.

Someone grabbed me by the shoulders. "Easy, ma'am. Easy. Are you family?"

"Yeah." I blinked. "No. Is he. God, is he.?"

"He's alive. His vitals are good. Not great, but good. We've gotta get him into a burn unit. We're gonna airlift him to Saint Joe's. It's the closest one. All right?"

"Airlift him?" Oh, God, it was bad. It was bad.

"Can you let his family know?"

Oh, God, the boys! And his mother. I nodded, mutely. "But I have to go with him."

"You can't, ma'am. We need room to work on him. If he has family, they're gonna need your help more than he does. I promise, he's in good hands."

Already they were moving the stretcher into the back of the ambulance. I jerked free of the EMT and lunged toward Mason and leaned in close to his face, "I love you, too, Mason. I love you, too."

But he couldn't hear me. I'd waited too long. Dammit, I'd waited too long!

Then they peeled me off him and put him into the ambulance. It sped away screaming. I turned in a slow circle, not knowing what the hell to do next. I saw the ambulance with the children inside just as they closed the doors, but I had time enough to see them working on the kids. They must be alive, too, then.

Not so the body on the front lawn. The firemen who'd gone inside must have brought it out after Mason had emerged. It had a blanket over it. Too big to be a child. I hoped.

They were finally making progress beating down the flames. One of the firemen said something about gas, but I didn't have time to listen. I had to go. I had to get to the boys, Mason's nephews, who were at my place with Myrtle and my nieces.

Oh, Lord, how was I going to handle this?

I got into Mason's oversize black Monte Carlo, his pride and joy. I had tears streaming from my eyes. I couldn't let the kids see me like this. I didn't know what to do. So I pulled my phone out of my pocket, stared at it for a long moment, and then I did the best thing I could think of.

I called my sister.

"Snap the fuck out of it!"

I'd been in midrant, complete with hiccuping sobs, when my big sister, who never even said damn, brought my runaway emotions to a sudden halt.

"Do I have your attention?" Sandra asked.

"You do."

"Okay, first. Set the phone on your lap and put me on speaker so you don't get killed, okay?"

Apparently she'd discerned from my initial projectile word vomit that I was driving while having a complete breakdown and talking on the phone. I did what she said and paid attention to the road. If I wrecked Mason's ride he'd never forgive me. If he lived.

God, let him live.

"I'm going to meet you at your place, Rachel. But before you get there, I want you to pull yourself together. Right now."

"But I don't know how bad it is. I don't even know if he's going to—"

"Yeah, and you know what? Neither do those boys."

Cold water in the face might have been as effective. But I doubted it.

"They're kids. Their father is dead, and their mother is in a maximum-security nuthatch. At this moment, you are all they have, Rachel. You need to step up for this. It's important."

That brought me to full attention. I sat up straighter, and my tears dried up like they'd never been there. "I don't know what to do for them, sis."

"You go in there and you tell them the truth in the most positive manner possible. Live your books for once. Tell them you've got no reason to think he won't be just fine, and make sure you sound confident when you do. If you look scared or uncertain, they're gonna be terrified. They need a mother figure. So talk to them. Reassure them, and most of all, make sure they know that you're there for them, no matter what happens to their uncle."

I blinked hard, because those words hit me deep. I did not want to be a mother figure to those kids. I'd said it over and over.

"You would, wouldn't you, Rache?"

"What?"

"Be there for the boys if anything happened to Ma—"

"Yeah. I would." And it was the truth, even if I had only just realized it. I was shocked, to be honest. I'd become way more attached to the dynamic duo than I'd been aware of. Josh was like Myrtle's freakin' littermate, and Jeremy was Mason's mini-me, with a fair amount of teenage angst (most of it hard-earned) thrown in.

"Then you have to let them know that."

"Okay."

"I'll be there by the time you arrive."

"Okay."

"Now hang up and call his mother."

"Aw, jeez, Sandra—"

"Tell her not to drive. I'll send Jim to pick her up and drive her in. Tell her he'll be there soon. Just as fast as he can."

"Okay."

"Hang in there, sis."

I nodded hard, disconnected, thanked my lucky stars for a big sister who knew how to talk to me and called Mason's mother. She took it pretty well, I thought, and I did a great job holding it together as I tried to reassure her, and told her my brother-in-law was on his way to pick her up.

And then I was home, rolling slowly through the wrought-iron gates I'd left open and along the driveway up to the my house. My haven. I shut off the engine, got out, then stood there a second looking at my front door like I was looking at my own grave. I did not want to walk in there and blow those kids' lives to hell and gone. How much more could they take?

Then Sandra's minivan pulled in behind me. The headlights shut off, and she was out and hugging me hard before I even took another breath.

It made me choke up when she hugged me, so I pushed her away, wiped at my eyes, looked into hers. "How's my face?"

She took a tissue out of her purse and dabbed some smudged makeup away. "You're good. You can do this."

Nodding, I marched up the front steps, opened the door and stepped inside.

Joshua, Jeremy, and Sandra's daughter Misty were playing video games on the sofa. Jere and Misty sat close enough so their elbows were bumping. Ah, young love. My other niece, Christy, who I think was trying out for the role of the bad twin lately, sat in a chair off to one side, her nose glued to her smartphone.

Myrtle was the only one who noticed we'd come in, and she came barreling across the living room unerringly and bashed me in the shins with her forehead, which was her typical greeting. I yelped, because bulldogs have skulls made of lead, and the kids finally noticed us there, paused their game and turned our way.

Jeremy met my eyes and went a shade paler. "What happened? Where's Uncle Mason?"

I drew a breath. "Your uncle was hurt a little while ago. He's going to be okay, though. They're taking him to the hospital. We're all going to meet him there, okay?"

Joshua blinked slowly and didn't say a word. He looked terrified. They both got off the sofa, moving toward us.

Jeremy said, "Hurt how?"

Wonderful Romance/Mystery and Myrt the Blind Bulldog!
By Lorna
The only way I can start this, is by saying that I absolutely love this series! This is the fifth installment, counting the novella, and I can honestly tell you that all of them were page turners, with pretty much non-stop action, romance, and at times down right homey charm.

Rachel de Luca and Mason Brown are back for more mystery, and their romance continues. This time around, the story centers around a series of arson murders. Mason inadvertently gets involved when he comes upon one of the fires, and saves some lives. So now he is the hero detective, that got burned while saving lives. Rachel’s just mad that he put his life into jeopardy, but of course she is proud of him as well. While he’s in the hospital, his two nephews come to stay at Rachel’s house. This normally would have had Rachel going crazy, but she slowly comes to realize that she loves the boys as much as she loves Mason. Not that she will tell Mason, or anything! When the arsonist’s sights get set on Mason, the story ramps up significantly.

Rachel is a fascinating character. As a formerly blind, self help author, she has the market cornered on snark. Always a good thing, in my estimation! She’s always been very self reliant and has never really let anyone into her life. After meeting Mason, and getting involved in his cases, everything in her life changes. She suddenly has someone to lean on, and to love. Her life is no longer her own, especially after taking in the blind bulldog, Myrtle. Myrtle is, to me, one of the best characters in this series, and always figures prominently in the story. Myrt gets a big surprise this time around, and I loved it. Which brings me to Mason. He is of course, the total package. Handsome, heroic, intelligent, caring, he has all the attributes that Rachel never knew she wanted in a man. The two when they work together, become a formidable crime solving team. The two together in their romance, are just dynamite!

This story ended up being full of murders, fires and even explosions. The reader is in on the who done it part of the story, but while that might ruin some mysteries, it totally worked in this book. In addition, another villain from a previous book is back for more fun and games-this time for a much better reason.

When I finished this book, I literally said “What a good book”, out loud. And it was. I would recommend it to any adult mystery reader.(PureTextuality.com)

A wickedly funny, action-packed, dangerous, mysterious, beautifully plotted, well-written and romantic thrill-ride!
By LITERAL ADDICTION
Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Pack Alpha - Chelle:
*Copy gifted in exchange for an honest review

If you haven't had a chance to devour the Brown & de Luca books yet, I cannot recommend them strongly enough. I will say right off, however, that Deadly Obsession should not be read as a standalone novel. You really need to read the series in order to truly appreciate the arc of the story and the nuances of the characters. And speaking of characters, Rachel de Luca is easily, hands down, one of my absolute favorite heroines of all time (and I read A LOT). :)

It's going to be tough for me to write a review for this book without spoilers, because so much as happened within the series to lead the reader to Deadly Obsession, and so much happens within the book that cannot be easily relayed without spoilers. So I'll do my best to give you an idea of the fantastic nature of this book in a vague enough way that I don't ruin it for you...

Detective Mason Brown and New Age Author guru Rachel DeLuca have been through a lot. Murders, mystery, kidnappings, instal-chemistry, fighting their feelings, and more. Their relationship is at a high point in Deadly Obsession though, and they FINALLY realize the depth of their feelings. Rachel's still fighting it, after all, it's in her nature to do so, but Mason has given in and to see them slide comfortably into that is a beautiful thing after wanting to smack each of them in previous books.

As per usual, there's plenty of murder, mayhem, thrills and chills and mystery in Deadly Obsession. This time, it's a bit of an homage to Fatal Attraction, but even better. Rachel's heightened sixth-sense is on high alert from the get go, but she's not entirely sure she can trust what she's feeling, and a series of events force Mason, Rachel and those closest to them to realize that life and time are precious, and good things should be grabbed with two hands and held on to for dear life.

Like I mentioned it's very hard to say more without ruining any of it. Let me just say that the entire Brown & de Luca series is fantastic - a wickedly funny, action-packed, dangerous, mysterious, beautifully plotted, well-written and slightly romantic thrill-ride that will have you glued to the pages of each and every installment. Deadly Obsession was the perfect conclusion to the series, and I highly recommend it and its predecessors to everyone!

Creative Deeds Reads Review
By creativedeeds
I received Deadly Obsession in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Okay, so I might have had this ARC in my possession for a couple of weeks… or more. I also might have been avoiding it. I’m not proud of that fact. The truth is, I’m a wimp. I didn’t want to read Deadly Obsession. Not because I was dreading the story itself. It was simply because I just wasn’t ready to say goodbye to Rachel and Mason. *sigh*

I think I can honestly say that this series is one of my favorites. I love Rachel’s spunk. Her gritty personality and her passionate loyalty and her intense emotions. Yeah, I love Rachel. She has commitment issues, but she’s hiding behind them. Her heart was committed to Mason, Josh and Jeremy long before her mind caught up with the fact. Her inner dialogue was priceless.

As usual, the bad guy in this one was beyond anything I would have expected. Maggie Shayne holds nothing back and even though readers are clued in pretty early on about who the true enemy is, that doesn’t take away from the drama or the suspense.

There were no wasted pages, scenes or face time with any of the characters. Even Myrtle got equal billing in Deadly Obsession and it was well deserved.

So, was I happy with the way things turned out? I have to admit that even though I’m sorry that my time with Brown & de Luca has come to an end, it was a perfect conclusion. It’s probably time for Rachel and Mason to catch a well deserved break. That doesn’t mean however that I would be opposed to meeting these characters again. I’m sure Maggie Shayne has a lot of other awesome characters that I have yet to be introduced to. She’s definitely an author that has earned an automatic spot on my TBR list.

Starred Review. Bestseller Kava's superb Maggie O'Dell thriller (after Exposed) features a particularly memorable villain, the Project Manager (aka Robert Asante), the third party behind 1995's horrifying Oklahoma City bombing, along with real-life terrorists Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols. Now Asante has directed an attack on Minnesota's Mall of America during Black Friday, the big retailing day after Thanksgiving, that kills 32 people, including two students who were duped into carrying devices that they believed would just create an electronic blackout. FBI profiler O'Dell, still recovering from the death of her boss, must work with her new superior, hypercritical Raymond Kunze, as well as her ex-boyfriend, security consultant Nick Morrelli, to prevent a second major terrorist outrage Asante has planned to follow shortly after the first. Kava peppers the breathless action with enough intel to make the premise scarily real. (Oct.)

Friday morning, November 23 Mall of America Bloomington, Minnesota

Rebecca Cory stood her ground despite another elbow shoved into her shoulder blades. She'd let the first two shoves go. A quick glance back at the tattooed man convinced her to ignore this one, too. The man towered over her, wearing camouflage pants and a muscle T-shirt. No signs of a coat. Quite a strange fashion statement considering it was twenty degrees outside and snowing, but not a bad idea in the crowded mall.

Even with a glance it would have been hard for Rebecca not to notice the purple-and-green dragon that snaked down the man's arm, its tail curling up around his neck and its fire-breathing head squeezing out of the T-shirt's tight arm-hole. The tattoo crawled all the way down past the man's elbow. The same elbow that kept finding its way into the middle of Rebecca's shoulder blades.

She told herself to be patient. She could finally see the order counter as the line to the mall's coffee bar grew shorter. It wouldn't be much longer. She tried to concentrate on the Christmas music, what she could hear of it through the crowd's chatter and the temper tantrums of impatient toddlers.

"…in a winter wonderland."

She loved that song. But it certainly didn't feel like winter in here. Sweat trickled down her back. She wished she had left her coat back with Dixon and Patrick who were guarding a rare find, a bistro table and four chairs in the mall's over crowded food court.

Rebecca hummed with the music. She knew all the words. They had sung Christmas songs on their long road trip. Connecticut to Minnesota. Twenty-one hours. Thirteen hundred miles. Surviving on Red Bull, convenience-store coffee and McDonalds. She hadn't caught up yet on sleep although yesterday they all crashed after Thanksgiving dinner at Dixon's grandparents' house. The first holiday meal she'd had in years—turkey, dressing, real mashed potatoes and all the trimmings. Granddad said a blessing. Nanna served seconds whether you asked for them or not. Dixon had no clue how lucky he was. Family, tradition, stability, unconditional love. It gave Rebecca hope to see those things still existed despite being absent from her family's life.

Another elbow.

Damn!

She resisted looking back this time.

What in the world was she doing here?

She hated malls and yet here she was on the day after Thanksgiving, the busiest shopping day and craziest shopping crowd of the year. She'd let Dixon talk her into it, just like this whole trip, convincing her it'd be an adventure she'd never forget. He'd been doing crap like that since they were in kindergarten and he convinced her paste tasted like cotton candy. You'd think she'd learn by now that Dixon's taste for adventure was pretty much like his taste for cotton candy, tame and sugar-coated, the hype being the most exciting part of anything Dixon did. What did she expect from a guy who quoted Batman and Robin?

And poor Patrick, along for the ride, trying to be the good sport.

Patrick.

He was a whole different story. She should have found Patrick's behavior endearing. Instead, she thought it a bit suspicious that this totally cool and together guy would want to travel 1300 miles to spend Thanksgiving with her and Dixon. Seemed a long way to go just to get inside her pants.

That wasn't fair.

She knew he didn't have any family to keep him in Connecticut over the long holiday weekend. His mom was in Green Bay. He had a stepsister in D.C. He'd asked if they could cut through Wisconsin on the way back, like that was part of his excuse to go along. That maybe they could just drop in and say "hi" to his mom. But no big deal if it didn't happen.

That was Patrick. Low-key, mature, steady as a rock. Dixon called it "boring." Rebecca called it dependable and she liked that about Patrick even if she wasn't so sure about his intentions. Dependable felt good. Having Patrick along felt good, though she didn't like admitting that even to herself.

They'd become friends working at Champs across from the University of New Haven. Patrick tended bar and Rebecca waited tables. She wasn't old enough to serve drinks to the table and if there wasn't another "of age" waitress working then Patrick did it for her, always so patient about it even when he was swamped behind the bar.

Patient, kind, gentle…very suspicious.

Pretty weird, or maybe just sad and pathetic, that she found all that suspicious. Mostly in the beginning. Not so much anymore. Next to Dixon, Patrick was her best friend. Her mom didn't think it was normal for Rebecca to have boys as best friends.

"Are you having sex with these boys?" her mom wanted to know. Then when Rebecca told her "absolutely not," her mom seemed even more perplexed.

"You're not a lesbian, are you?" her mom had asked and quickly added, "Not that there's anything wrong with that."

In the last three years Rebecca had watched her mom and dad yell their way through a divorce. Her dad immediately married the coworker he claimed to have just met. Her mother reciprocated with her own stream of men. After watching the two of them, Rebecca had long ago made the decision to concentrate on her future, to use their love life catastrophes as inspiration. Her future was her escape and she wouldn't allow someone, dysfunctional parents or a boyfriend, to screw that up for her.

Besides, her love for animals, especially dogs, was the one thing Rebecca knew without question. Taking care of them, healing them would save her. She looked to it as her salvation from an otherwise dreary, miserable life. She knew veterinary school would be a long haul, but she was willing to put in the tough hours. Maybe someday have her own clinic. That and a pack of dogs, a couple of horses, some cats, too. Her mom wouldn't even let her have a small dog in their post-divorce condo. It was just as well. Not having someone she was obligated to, had made it easier to leave for college and live on campus. Same theory went for not having someone to hold her back, distract her from her dream.

When her mom asked if she was coming home for Thanksgiving, Rebecca's first inclination was to blurt out that she didn't have a home. But her mom wouldn't have understood. And she certainly wouldn't have allowed Rebecca to travel halfway across the country with Dixon and Patrick, so Rebecca lied.

No, not really a lie.

She simply told her mom that her dad had asked her to spend Thanksgiving with his new family. That was actually true. He had asked her to join them on their extravagant Thanksgiving trip to Jamaica. It wasn't Rebecca's fault that her mom hadn't checked it out, that she would rather swallow fire than talk to her ex-husband.

By the time Rebecca made her way back to the table, Patrick had gotten a Cinnabon for each of them. From the look on Dixon's face she knew Patrick was making him wait for her.

Add dependable and courteous to that list.

It made Rebecca smile just as Andy Williams started singing, "I'll be Home for Christmas." The mall must have the same Christmas CD collection that Dixon owned.

Dixon was singing the words to "I'll be Home for Christmas" as she set down his Red Bull and coffees for her and Patrick.

She barely sat down and he bit off a mouthful of cinnamon roll while popping the tab on his drink. Her friend was charming and talented and witty and totally oblivious to anyone else when he was obsessed. Which was the reason they were here at the mall on the day after Thanksgiving. His latest obsession involved the red backpack at his feet.

"Chad and Tyler are already here."

He waved at them across the food court but they even didn't look his way. Typical, but Rebecca didn't point out to Dixon that the two jocks still treated him like an elementary school tag-along. The four of them had gone to school together up until Rebecca's mom dragged her away to Connecticut. Dixon chose West Haven for college partly to be with Rebecca but as soon as he came home to Minnesota, Chad and Tyler could draw him into their escapades with a simple phone call.

Rebecca noticed they both carried red back packs identical to Dixon's. What did he get himself into this time? She pulled off her coat and let it hang over the back of her chair. She usually stayed away from Dixon's adventures. She wiped at her bangs that were pasted to her forehead and stretched her back expecting it to ache from the tattooed man's elbow.

"We agreed to start on the third floor and work our way down."

"What exactly is it you guys are doing?" Patrick asked.

Rebecca wanted to kick him under the table. Dixon took on causes like they were T-shirts with slogans that he changed every other week. Most likely this was Chad and Tyler's idea. Dixon read Vince Flynn novels and super hero comic books—Batman was currently his favorite. He did a cool imitation of Homer Simpson and knew all the characters from Lord of the Rings. Not only could he find Venus, and sometimes Mars, in the night sky, he could name all three stars in Orion's Belt. When he told Rebecca he had decided to major in cyber-crime, she couldn't imagine him stepping out of his fantasy world long enough to deal with real life criminals. He was a smart, quirky guy and Rebecca hoped he'd realize soon that he didn't need Chad and Tyler.

"Do you realize that eighty percent of toys sold in the U.S.A. are made in China?" Dixon told Patrick as he stuffed another piece of cinnamon roll into his mouth. "And that's just toys. Don't even get me started about other products. Like those cute little patriotic flag pins everyone puts on their lapels…made in China." He drew out the phrase like it was all the proof he needed to substantiate his argument. Never mind that it sounded like he had memorized it from some pamphlet.

Patrick glanced at Rebecca as he sipped his coffee. She winced, wanting to tell him it was too late.

"Over a half million production jobs were outsourced to other countries last year," Dixon continued. "Just to make everyday products that we can't live without."

"Like your new iPhone," Rebecca said pointing to the gadget in Dixon's shirt pocket, the earbuds a constant fixture dangling around his neck. "Made in China but you can't live without it."

"These are different." He rolled his eyes for Patrick as if saying she didn't know what she was talking about. "Besides, this was a gift, a reward, in exchange for lugging around this backpack all day."

"Ahh," Rebecca said and didn't have to add that she knew there had to be a catch.

"And I can live without it, Miss Smartypants," he added.

"Really?" Rebecca raised an eyebrow to challenge him.

"Of course."

She put out her hand. "Then loan it to me for the day. You owe me for losing my cell phone."

"I didn't lose it. I just haven't remembered where I placed it."

But already Dixon's smile disappeared as if he was trying to contemplate life without immediate access and communication to the world. Just when she thought he couldn't bear to relinquish it, he pulled the cord from around his neck and slid the cord and the iPhone across the table to her. The smile reappeared.

"Don't break it. I just got it."

"What about the backpack?" Patrick asked.

Both Rebecca and Dixon looked at him as though they completely forgot what they had been talking about. Patrick pointed to the pack at Dixon's feet.

"What's the deal with the backpack?" he asked again.

"That, my friend, contains the secret weapon." Dixon was back to his infomercial. "Inside is an ingenious contraption that will emit a wireless signal. Completely harmless," he waved his hand, "but enough interference to mess up a few computer systems. Wake up a few of these retailers. Last time I was home Chad and Tyler took me to a rally with this cool professor at UMN, drives a Harley, one of the big ones."

Rebecca couldn't help but smile. Dixon wouldn't know a Harley from a Yamaha, but she didn't say anything.

"This is a guy who's been in the trenches, knows what he's talking about. You know, he's been to the Middle East, Afghanistan, Russia, China. Professor Ryan says that until we hit people in the almighty pocketbook nobody's gonna care that we outsource hundreds of thousands of jobs every year or that the southern invasion is stealing twice that many jobs right here, right out from under us."

"Southern invasion?" It was Rebecca's turn to roll her eyes at Dixon. She'd lived through many of his obsessions and humored him by listening to all of his rants, but once in a while she had to let him know she couldn't take him seriously. Next week Dixon would probably move on to saving beached whales.

"So why the padlock?" Patrick asked, still interested.

Dixon shrugged like it didn't matter, that the padlock was a minor point and besides, he was finished with his spiel. Rebecca recognized the look. He was ready and impatient, looking over his shoulder, concerned with finding Chad and Tyler. That's when she knew this idea was probably theirs. Not Dixon's. But he'd go along, wanting to be friends with the cool guys, the high school jocks he grew up following around. They were always getting Dixon in trouble and she didn't under stand why he kept going back for more. Maybe another semester away at college, away from them, would help.

Take the Escalator to Terror
By Trisha Koerner
Black Friday by Alex Kava is the first book by her that I have read. I thought it was great! In our new world that includes terrorism, it is a scary thought that this could really happen!!!
It is a Maggie O'Dell novel. The story is about five college students that go to the Mall of America the day after Thanksgiving. The day the retail world calls Black Friday. Sounds normal right? Wrong! These students are called cutaways by someone known as the Project Manager. This man talked three students into carrying a red backpack into the mall with "jamming devices" inside. They were told that these devices would screw up the store and mall computers. Being the busiest shopping day of the year, it would cause mass confusion. Little did the students know but they were being turned into suicide bombers.
One student named Dixon brought two friends along. He wound up being called from the mall by his Grandfather because his Grandmother had to have heart surgery. Thinking nothing of it he handed his backpack over to his friend Rebecca.
After Dixon left, Rebecca had to go to the bathroom. Their other friend Patrick waited for her in the food court. The other two students with the backpacks were walking seperately through the mall as instructed. Rebecca went to the bathroom but forget to get the backpack off the hook on the stall door when she left.
When she got back to the food court, she told Patrick she would be right back and left to retrieve it. As she approached the bathroom it happened. A huge explosion! The Project Manager had used his remote and detonated two of the bombs. The third would not go off for some reason.
Chaos...confusion...death...body parts was everywhere.
I have to stop so I do not give away who is involved and what happens next. Read the book! It was a fast reading page turner. It will make you really think about how vulnerable we really are.

Fast Paced Thriller..
By Tazlvr
I love the Maggie O'Dell books by Alex Kava. She grips your senses from the 1st page, and then you have to hang on from there.

This book was riveting and a great thriller, The Black Friday concept is what caught my attention. I would never have thought about when I go out to a mall the day after Thanksgiving, that there would be a bomb at a place I would be shopping. This book will make you think about that, with the way the world is today.

All in all I really enjoyed this book, but the ending fell a little flat. If you are a Kava fan and a fan of Maggie ODell then you will enjoy this book. I hope that this story will continue in another book to help tie up some loose ends!

Another 5 STAR book from Kava & Maggie O'Dell
By FictionGuru.com
I always wait for Alex Kava books. Wish we could get her to write 2 books a year. Her books are fast paced and each of the chapters leaves you wanting more. I find myself reading late into the night because of this. I enjoy how Kava writes true crime into her novels -- bits & pieces from the news, past & present. Its WOW, that she even considered "backpacks" for her crime -- and look how that was actually being considered???

In this latest thriller she brings in surrounding characters and their interaction with Maggie O'Dell is what we're all looking for - more Maggie. I was impressed that she's making something happen between Nick and Maggie. That's been important to my following her series. If you enjoy fast reads -- and like true life thrillers, this one couldn't have come at a better time. Read for entertainment!

Fans and new readers alike will welcome this sparkling sequel to Raybourn's debut Victorian mystery, Silent in the Grave (2007). Left homeless by fire, wealthy widow Lady Julia Grey has been recuperating in Italy. With Christmas approaching, Julia returns to England, where she joins her large and eccentric family at their equally large and eccentric ancestral estate, a former monastery that retains some monkish ghosts. Nicholas Brisbane, a private enquiry agent with whom Julia has shared both a heated embrace and a stint at detection, is among the holiday houseguests, and to Julia's astonishment Brisbane is in line for a title and engaged. Then a local curate is murdered in the former church sanctuary, and a set of priceless pearls goes missing. Headstrong and clever Julia joins Brisbane in investigating the crimes, deciphering his personal situation in the process. Readers may wish for a bit more romantic development, but the complex mystery, a delightfully odd collection of characters and deft period details produce a rich and funny read. (Jan.)

The March family has the reputation of being wild as March hares, but when it comes to murder they are no fools. Lady Julia Grey (formerly March) is in Italy with two of her brothers, recovering from the murder of her husband and her own near-death in a fire (Silent in the Grave, 2007). When Lord March sends for Julia's brother Lysander, recently married to an Italian beauty, they all return home to Bellmont Abbey, a huge estate built 700 years ago as a Cistercian monastery. Julia is surprised to discover among her father's guests Nicholas Brisbane, the enigmatic private investigator she had grown to love during the investigation of her husband's murder. Brisbane is accompanied by his attractive but apparently silly fiancée, a woman Julia is sure he could never marry. Among the other guests are Julia's sisters, Emma and Lucy, the latter recently engaged to wealthy Sir Cedric Eastley; Eastley's cousin; Julia's Italian friend Count Fornacci; her uncle Fly; and worldly Lucian Snow, his curate. Soon Lucy is found holding a bloody candlestick above the body of Snow. Julia's valuable pearls are stolen. And a ghost walks the Abbey's dark passages. Julia turns sleuth over the violent objections of Brisbane, their relationship sizzling as they trade barbs and information. A sassy heroine and a masterful, secretive hero. Fans of romantic mystery could ask no more--except the promised sequel. -- Kirkus (starred review)

Now thou art come unto a feast of death, A terrible and unavoided danger. I Henry VI

Fresh from a six-month sojourn in Italy, Lady Julia returns home to Sussex to find her father's estate crowded with family and friends--but dark deeds are afoot at the deconsecrated abbey, and a murderer roams the ancient cloisters.

Much to her surprise, the one man she had hoped to forget--the enigmatic and compelling Nicholas Brisbane--is among her father's house guests...and he is not alone. Not to be outdone, Julia shows him that two can play at flirtation and promptly introduces him to her devoted, younger, titled Italian count.

But the homecoming celebrations quickly take a ghastly turn when one of the guests is found brutally murdered in the chapel, and a member of Lady Julia's own family confesses to the crime. Certain of her cousin's innocence, Lady Julia resumes her unlikely and deliciously intriguing partnership with Nicholas Brisbane, setting out to unravel a tangle of deceit before the killer can strike again. When a sudden snowstorm blankets the abbey like a shroud, it falls to Lady Julia and Nicholas Brisbane to answer the shriek of murder most foul.

With a captivating cast of characters in a remarkably imaginative setting, Silent in the Sanctuary is a marvelous sequel to the evocative Silent in the Grave.

"I was determined, well and truly, to be my own woman."
By E. Bukowsky
Lady Julia Grey is a thirty-year-old widow who almost lost her life in Deanna Raybourn's debut mystery, "Silent in the Grave." The sequel, "Silent in the Sanctuary," opens in a luxurious rented villa near Lake Como in 1887. Julia, who narrates, has been enjoying Italy's picturesque sights and warm climate along with her brothers, Plum and Lysander, and their good friend, the handsome Alessandro Fornacci. Since she helped private inquiry agent Nicholas Brisbane hunt down her late husband's killer, Julia has developed a taste for intrigue and danger. She longs for "something more important than the embroidering of cushions or the pouring of tea to sustain me." Julia gets her chance for excitement sooner than she expects when her father, the wealthy and influential Earl March, peremptorily summons the siblings home to Bellmont Abbey, the family estate in England. The Earl is furious with Lysander who, without asking permission of his father, has wed a fiery Neapolitan woman named Violante. Since Lysander has very little money of his own, he is dependent on the Earl's financial support to cover his living expenses. If the earl were to cut them off, Ly and his wife would be destitute.

Although Julia is happy to be at home with her family, she dreads seeing Brisbane again. She cannot forget the moment when "we had both of us reached beyond ourselves" and kissed passionately. Unhappily, their relationship never progressed beyond that one feverish encounter, and she has not heard a word from him in five months. However, Julia still cherishes the pendant that he gave her bearing the lovely inscription, "For where thou art, there is the world itself."

Julia and her brothers arrive four weeks before Christmas to find a large group of guests in residence at March House: their saucy and sarcastic sister, Portia; the vicar and his new curate, Lucian Snow; their poor orphaned cousins, Emma and Lucy Phipps; Dorcas, a portly and cranky old aunt; Lucy's much older fiancé, the overbearing Sir Cedric Eastley; Henry Ludlow, Cedric's cousin and secretary,; Hortense, the Earl's lady friend and a former courtesan; and most shocking of all, Nicholas Brisbane and his future wife, the lovely widow, Charlotte King. It takes all of Julia's considerable pride, breeding, and restraint to keep from showing her true feelings towards Brisbane's intended: "She was a Fragonard milkmaid, a Botticelli nymph. I hated her instantly."

When one of the Earl's guests is murdered, Julia and Nicholas join forces to find and apprehend the perpetrator. In the course of the novel, people are robbed, bludgeoned and poisoned. The deliciously intricate plot features phantoms, gypsies, and jewel thieves as well as deception, secrets, shocks, and betrayals. Raybourn has come up with the perfect recipe for a Victorian murder mystery: Take one spunky and meddlesome heroine. Add a dark and handsome gentleman with a shadowy past and a tortured soul. Mix in family scandals and a dollop of murder. Sprinkle with a generous portion of witty and acerbic dialogue, and top it all off with an imaginative and unexpected conclusion. "Silent in the Sanctuary" is a marvel that will have Raybourn's mesmerized readers turning pages well into the night. Miss it at your peril.
