Compelling read

Keeping true to her latest award willing formula NY Times best selling author, Heather Graham goes back to a locale that has been featured in some of her most recent novels with a creative and original story set off the coast of Florida and Miami.

On a weekend getaway with her brother and niece, Beth Anderson is panic-stricken when she comes upon a skull on the beach, and instantly recalls the disappearance of a retired couple last seen in that area. Beth was even more unnerved when a handsome stranger came upon them and quickly covered up their discovery. When Beth returned with her brother to show him her find, it's no longer there and he dismisses her discovery thinking she mistook a conch shell for the skull. Beth knows what she saw, but without the skull she certainly can't bring the authorities in to investigate, however, that doesn't stop her from trying to unravel the mystery herself.

The bigger mystery that weekend was the enigmatic Keith Henson, the stranger from the beach who seems to keep turning up at the oddest times and whose presence just doesn't seem to ring true. Additionally, the man simply unnerves her by his sheer masculinity. Perhaps she was paranoid but it just seemed to Beth that the rest of the weekend vacationers on the island all seemed to have other agendas besides a little fun in the sun.

This was a decent read, fast-paced, with the suspense kept at the forefront throughout the story. The romance that developed between Beth and Keith was definitely hot, in spite of Beth not trusting Keith, and he never telling her the truth of what he was really up to. Graham fills the pages with a plethora of characters, which at times I thought needed a list in order to keep them straight. The ending was wrapped up neatly in an edge of the seat climax that solves all the mystery of who done what to whom! One question that remains unresolved though - I never did get the point of Ambers' friend Kim's defection??? Otherwise, a very compelling read.

exhilarating romantic suspense

With members of the yacht club where she works, Beth Anderson looks forward to spending her vacation with her widower brother Ben, his fourteen years old daughter Amber and her best pal Kim Smith on tiny Calliope Key, two to three hours from Miami. That is she has R&R until the three females find a human skull, which Beth ponders if this is the remains of one of the missing expert sailors, retirees Ted and Molly Monaco.

When stranger Keith Henson arrives, Beth hides the finding. Her niece gives the newcomer the ten second third degree that only a young teen (or Macaulay Culkin in Uncle Buck) could perform. When Beth returns for the hidden skull, she finds it missing; Ben insists it was a conch. However, Beth believes whoever took the skull remains nearby ready to kill two teens and two adult siblings if needed. Keith offers to help her, but though attracted to him she wonders if he is the one who uncovered and re-hid the skull, making him the killer, but the case will twist much more bizarrely than simply that.

THE ISLAND is an exhilarating romantic suspense with the emphasis on red herrings, twists and turns (perhaps too many), and plenty of action as Beth tries to learn the truth about the vanishing skull which soon leads into "Sail into Terror". Beth is courageous as she struggles with what she knows (very little), what she speculates (a lot more all lethal), what to do and who to trust. The story line works because the ensemble cast seems genuine, as differing motives surface. Adding to the thriller is an intriguing secondary romance between Ben and a suspect that can only turn out bad for someone. Heather Graham's fans will enjoy sea cruising to THE ISLAND.

Phoning it in

I read some Heather Graham books years ago and enjoyed their plotting and dialog. I bought The Island based on those older books. Unfortunately this book simply doesn't stand up. The plot is threadbare. The characters are irritating (yet another book in the stupid-heroine genre). Some of the dialog is just bad. The whole book wanders along aimlessly, then wraps up with a few pages of everyone suddenly acting decisive and heroic - way out of character. I'm afraid Graham phoned this one in, and her editor was out to lunch.

Feels Like Family

Helen Decatur has always set goals for her life and has achieved those goals; she made her way through law school, opened her own practice and is a highly respected matrimonial attorney in South Carolina. Now at the age of 42 she feels she has let life pass her by, now she wants a family and a child of her own. Helen has set back and watched her two best friends living with their husbands and their children and she desires the same life, but having seen so many devastating divorces she has held off till now.

Helen's friend Dana Sue owns a restaurant and Erik is the pastry chef, Erik has a pain filled past and has avoided romance. There is a chemistry between Helen and Erik even amongst their arguments you can feel their romantic attraction. Will Helen and Erik unite? Or will Erik's painful past prevent him from discovering a romantic spark with Helen? Will Helen have the family she so desires?

Feels Like Family is the third in the trilogy of The Sweet Magnolias. You will find some wonderful and interesting characters, love, romance, suspense and sexual tensions making this one difficult to put down. The plot is intriguing and fast paced, and this one is a fascinating and highly enjoyable read all while looking at some very realistic issues which face women in their late 30's and early 40's everyday.

I highly recommend picking up the trilogy of The Sweet Magnolias, I have not had the pleasure of reading the other two in this trilogy but found this one to be highly enjoyable and I will be picking up the first two in this trilogy.

Too much going on

Lawyer Helen postponed family for her career and at 42, is wishing she hadn't. With no man in her life, but her two friends pushing her to sexy pastry chef Erik, she's not sure if she's ready to go the baby route alone. But when a client suddenly needs someone to watch her small children, Helen drops everything to step up to the plate, with Erik lending a helping hand. Erik left his job as an EMT after his wife died in premature labor. He went to cooking school and never really looked back - all he is sure of is that he doesn't want marriage or babies. When his relationship with Helen takes a sudden turn to passion, she sees that Erik is her answer to her baby dilemma. Of course, she neglects to run it by him before ending up pregnant weeks later. Erik insists on marriage, but as a successful divorce lawyer, Helen is resistant.

Adding more drama to the story is sous chef Karen's struggle with depression after being abandoned by her husband with two young children (and her resistance to let another man in her life), another sous chef coming to Helen to get her wrongfully deported husband returned to the US, and the deranged spouse of a client hell bent on vengeance against Helen, which puts her and her baby in danger.

To put it simply, there is far too much going on in the story that the plot gets convoluted and just drags on and on. Helen, the most intriguing of the three Sweet Magnolias is reduced to being wimpy and deceitful, and Erik far too forgiving. I didn't really get that there was any chemistry between them. The far more compelling story was Karen & Elliott's romance. I have found that when Woods produces a trilogy, the third often loses steam or has the responsibility to tie up far too many loose ends that the story itself suffers. This was simply an okay book for me - not one that would stand up to repeat readings.

Beware - devious female

No Spoilers...

This is the first Sherryl Wood's book I have read. I hope this is not the best example of her writing as I thought there was far too much repetitive dialogue for the first 3/4 of the book. When I purchased, I did not realize this was the third in a series and for those of you who have not read the second book, "A Slice of Heaven", this book does a quick review in the book and may spoil it for you.

There were lots of characters and little sub-stories in this book, but none of the storylines were well developed. I particularly had an issue with the main story that featured Helen, a lawyer who is touted as being ethical and highly respected. She does something devious that as a woman I found hard to stomach. Her decision showed her to be a self-centered narcissus. Wood's writing glossed over the controversy between her and the people whose lives she affected as if what Helen did was some minor offense.

The small squirrel was just ready to scold—its little mouth partially opened as it clutched the acorn close to its chest. In the right light, one could almost believe the tail had just twitched.

Franklin Blue Cat called it The Sassy One. It was one of his latest carvings and in three months would be featured, along with thirty other pieces of his work, in a prestigious art gallery in Santa Fe. He hoped he lived long enough to see it.

Franklin often thought how strange the turns his life had taken. Had anyone told him that one day he would become known the world over for his simple carvings, he would have called them crazy. He would also have called them crazy for telling him that, at the age of sixty, he would be alone and dying of cancer. He'd always imagined himself going into old age surrounded by children and grandchildren with a loving wife at his side.

He set aside the squirrel. As he did, the pain he'd been living with for some months took a sharp upward spike, making Franklin reel where he stood. He waited until the worst of it passed, then stumbled to his bedroom and collapsed on his bed.

He considered giving Adam Two Eagles a call. Adam's father had been the clan healer. Everyone had assumed that Adam would follow in his father's footsteps. Only Adam had rebelled. Instead, he had taken the white man's way and left the Kiamichi Mountains to go to college, graduated from Oklahoma State University with an MBA, and from there, gone straight into the army to eventually become one of their elite—an Army Ranger.

Then, during the ensuing years, something had happened to Adam that caused him to quit the military, and brought him home. He'd come back to eastern Oklahoma, to his Kiowa roots, and stepped into his father's footsteps as if he'd never been away.

Adam never talked about what had changed him, but Franklin knew it had been bad. He saw the shadows in Adam's eyes when he thought no one was looking. However, Franklin knew something that Adam did not. Franklin knew it would pass. He'd lived long enough to know life was in a constant state of flux.

As Franklin drifted to sleep, he dreamed, all the way back to his younger days and the woman who'd stolen his heart.

Leila of the laughing eyes and long dark hair. He couldn't remember when he hadn't loved her. They'd made love every chance they could get—with passion, but without caution.

Sleep took him to the day he had learned that Leila's family was moving. She'd been twenty-two to his thirty—old enough to stay behind. His heartbeat accelerated as he relived the panic. In his mind, he could see her face through the back window of the car as her father drove away.

Franklin shifted on the bed. This was new. He didn't remember her calling out. In real life, she'd done nothing but cry as they drove away. It was the way he'd remembered it for all these years. So why had the dream been different? What was it she was trying to say?

He swung his legs to the side of the bed and then stood, giving himself time to decide if he had the strength to move. Finally, he walked out of his bedroom, then through the kitchen to the back porch. The night air was sultry and still.

He stood for a few moments, absorbing the impact of the dream, waiting for understanding. At first, he felt nothing. His mind was blank, but he knew what to do. It was the same thing he always did as he began a new piece of work. All he had to do was look at the block of wood until he saw whatever it was that was waiting to come out. Only then did he begin carving.

Following his instincts, he closed his eyes, took a slow breath, then waited for the words Leila had been trying to say.

It was quiet on the mountain. Almost too quiet. Even the night birds were silent and the coyotes seemed to have gone to ground. There was nothing to distract Franklin from watching his dream, letting it replay in his head. He stood motionless for so long that dew settled on his bare feet, while an owl, feeling no threat, passed silently behind him on its way out to hunt.

And then understanding came, and with it, shock. Franklin turned abruptly and looked back at his house, almost expecting Leila to be on the porch, but there was no one there.

He turned again, this time looking to the trees beyond his home. He'd been born on this land. His parents had died in this house, and soon, so would he. But there was something he knew now that he had not known yesterday.

Leila had taken something of his when she'd left him. His child.

Right in the middle of his revelation, exhaustion hit. Damn this cancer.

His legs began to shake and his hands began to tremble. He walked back to the house, stumbling slightly as he stepped up on the porch, then dragged himself into the house.

What if he could find his Leila—even if she was no longer his? He wanted to see their child—no—he needed to know that a part of him would live on, even after he was gone. Tomorrow, he would call Adam Two Eagles. Adam would know what to do.

Adam Two Eagles rarely had to stretch to reach anything. At three inches over six feet tall, he usually towered over others. His features were Native American, but less defined than his father's had been. His mother had been Navajo and the mix of Kiowa and Navajo had blended well, making Adam a very handsome man. His dark hair was thick and long, falling far below his shoulders—a far cry from the buzz cut he'd worn in the military. But that seemed so long ago that it might as well have been from another life.

This morning, he was readying himself for a trip up the Kiamichis. There were some plants he wanted for healing that grew only in the higher elevation. It would mean at least a half-day's hike up and back—nothing he hadn't done countless times before—only today, he felt unsettled. He kept going from room to room, thinking there was something else he was supposed to do, but nothing occurred to him. Finally, he'd given up and prepared to leave.

If he hadn't forgotten the bag he liked to carry his herbs and plants in, he would have already been gone when the phone rang. But he was digging through a closet, and ignoring the ring would have been like a doctor ignoring a call for help.

"Hello."

"Adam! I was beginning to think you were gone." Adam smiled as he recognized the voice.

"Good morning, Franklin. You just caught me. How have you been?"

"The same," Franklin said shortly, unwilling to dwell on his illness. "But that's not why I called."

Adam frowned. The seriousness in his old friend's voice was unfamiliar.

"So, what's up?" Adam asked.

"It's complicated," Franklin said. "Can you come over?"

"Yes, of course. When do you need me?" Adam asked. There was a moment of hesitation, then Franklin sighed.

"Now, I need you to come now."

"I'm on my way," Adam said, and hung up.

In less than fifteen minutes, Adam was pulling up to Franklin's house. He parked, then killed the engine. When he looked up, Franklin had come outside and was waiting for him on the porch. He smiled and then waved Adam up before moving back into the house. Adam bolted up the steps and followed him.

A few minutes were wasted on small talk and the pouring of coffee before Adam urged Franklin to sit down. Franklin did so without arguing. Adam took a seat opposite Franklin's chair and leaned back, waiting for the older man to begin.

"I had a dream," Franklin said.

Adam set his coffee aside and leaned forward, resting his elbows on the arms of his chair.

"Tell me."

Franklin relayed what he'd dreamed, and what he believed that it meant. When he was finished, he leaned back and crossed his arms across his chest.

"So, can you help me?" he asked.

"What do you want me to do?" Adam countered. Franklin sighed. "I guess, I want to know if I'm right, if Leila and I had a child. I want to know this before I die."

Adam stood, then paced to the window, absently staring at the way sunlight reflected from his windshield onto a wind chime hanging from the porch. He knew what Franklin was asking. He just wasn't convinced Franklin would get the answer he desired.

"So, will you make medicine for me?" Franklin asked. Adam turned abruptly and asked, "Will you accept what comes, even if it's not what you wanted?"

"Yes."

Adam nodded shortly. "Then, yes, I'll help you."

Franklin sighed, then swiped a shaky hand across his face. "What do you need from me?" he asked. "Something that is remarkably yours alone."

Franklin hesitated a moment, then left the room. He returned shortly carrying a carving of an owl in flight.

"This was my first owl. Would this do?"

"Are you willing to sacrifice it?"

Franklin rubbed a hand over the owl one last time, as if imprinting the perfection of the shape and the feathers in his mind, then handed it over.

Adam took it. The wood felt warm where Franklin had been holding it, adding yet another layer of reality to the piece. Then he took out his knife.

"Are you still on blood thinner?" Adam asked. Franklin nodded.

"Then hair will have to do."

Franklin sat down. Adam deftly separated a couple of strands of Franklin's hair from his head and cut them off, wrapped them in his handkerchief and put them in his pocket.

"Is that all you need?" Franklin asked.

Adam nodded. "I will make medicine for you." Franklin's shoulders slumped with relief. "When will we know if it worked?"

"When someone comes."

"When? Not if, but when? How can you be so sure?"

"I know what I know," Adam said, and it was all he would say.

Synopsis of Two Stories

SYNOPSIS:
DEA agent Sonora has always been alone. She is devoted to her career and it takes precedence over romantic relationships. Sonora becomes number one on the hit list with a bad guy in Mexico and has to make herself scarce. Since she was raised alone in an orphanage, and has no known family, she takes off to ‘lose’ herself on the road.

Meanwhile - Franklin, a Native American man dying of leukemia has a vision. His youthful sweetheart walked out of his life with more than just his broken heart. In his vision, he realizes, she was pregnant. The man goes to his Native friend Adam as asks that he do his mojo and find his child. Adam agrees, and Sonora finds herself strangely drawn down the road by night, and dreaming of the unknown Adam by day.

At a gas station, to her shock, she comes face to face with Adam. He brings her to Franklin, and the sweetest reunion begins to take place. There is a HEA (happily ever after), and a good resolution to the killers from Mexico storyline.

This book has the best storyline of a man meeting an heretofore unknown child. It doesn’t happen in an instant, but quietly, over a period of time, trust and understanding develop into compassion and love.

My only beef with this book is there was never any question as to why Sonora was left at the orphanage. I think the reader is supposed to think it was due to racism on the part of her bio mom, but that’s just a guess. It’s a good book, and classic Sala.

Call My Name
3.5 STARS

SYNOPSIS:
Pre-cog gal from the backwoods of Kentucky ‘sees’ an accident one night. In the middle of a blizzard, she frantically arrives at the hospital just in time to provide a life saving transfusion of her rare blood type to the critically wounded man from her vision.

Flash forward: the man, Wyatt recovers and wants answers. He seeks out the mysterious woman of the blizzard, and arrives just in time to find her grieving for her family. A killer targeted Glory, but missed. Wyatt arrives and takes over the investigation and insures that Glory stays out the cross-hairs of a killer. Cue HEA. (Happily ever after).

CONS:
Ok. Glory is a very wimpy whinny passive character who expects others to take care of her. Despite the fact that she’s in her mid-twenties, she has no job. No higher education. No prospects of doing anything in particular. And apparently has no intention of changing the status quo. So..... how does she pay for stuff?

Also, IMO the entire town dislikes or distrusts Glory due to her pre-cog abilities. (Ok, the church ladies were nice and did some kind things...), she has no chance of a bettering herself, and has nothing and no-one to tie her to the backwater little dirt farm her family owned. She could go anywhere and relocate, but chooses to remain passive and mired in mediocrity in this wretched little community. IMO, she should have moved to the town where her husband Wyatt has 5 million relatives so there’s that ‘multi-generational influence’ available for their children. (Translation: Free Babysitting).

PROS:
It’s a Sala, and she always delivers absorbing stories. I’m slowly working my way through all her books and enjoying them all. This is not one of my favs, but it still beats the average paperback.

Well written books by the reliable Sharon Sala. Rider On Fire is very interestiong as the reader gets to know some mysticism about native americans. The hero and heroine seem made for each other, and the plot is interesting. I loved it that the heroine finds out that she does have a family. When You Call My name is a good read introducing the reader to understanding psychic powers of the heroine. The hero and the heroine are made for each other. I particularly liked it when the heroine has a premonition of disaster, and it results in helping people avoid it. A very good, read and nice value for money.

Another visit to the community of Whispering Wind

In a grocery store in New York City, Heather Reed gazes at her wailing child and realizes, after three years, that she can no longer accept the extraordinary responsibility of single parenthood. As she tells her irrepressible daughter, Angelique, they are going to find her father. Their search leads them to Whispering Wind, Wyoming where an unsuspecting Todd Winston now resides. Todd has been promoted to producer of "Megan's World", a successful home fashions network. After relocating from New York, Todd has just about accepted Whispering Wind as his home though he indulges himself with frequent trips back to the city. He's a man who is detailed, organized, and basically a control freak due to a tragic accident which took place when he was seventeen years old.
From the time of their reunion, Todd and Heather find themselves still strongly attracted to each other and marginally as much friends as they used to be. But Todd finds it hard to look at Angel and not remember his consuming sense of guilt. A sense of guilt that was hammered home years ago by his father. He is afraid that being in contact with any child below the age of four will result in that child's death due to his irresponsibility.
Sherryl Woods has created a wonderful, if fictional, community. Whispering Wind is full of colorful and supportive characters. Todd and Heather are both helped along by friends and help their friends in turn. The author fully illustrates the fact that this is a close-knit community. The narrative style is light and engaging and makes for a good and easy read. I gradually came to like Todd and Heather but would have liked more access into their internal thoughts than was allowed. A prime example: if I had known what was behind his fear of caring for babies, I would have been able to understand and even sympathize with his harsh treatment of Heather and Angel at times. As it was, I did enjoy the story overall and loved revisiting the community I was drawn to in the prequel. And in the end, I was glad to experience and believe in Todd, Heather, and Angel's happy ending.

Actress Heather Reed can no longer deal with her precocious or is it devilish three year old daughter Angelique. The straw that broke Heather's back was the tantrum in the Manhattan store. Desperate for help, especially some quality time away from her beloved brat, Heather decides to visit Angel's biological father, Todd Winston in Wyoming.

When Todd left for Wyoming to produce Megan's World, he had no idea he sired a child. Now, he finds his ex-girlfriend in town accompanied by a child who looks like a female Todd. Heather tells him the truth, sending Todd into a deep panic as he looks at the child like she is an unwanted virus. Heather tries to learn why he has such a deep aversion to children. The townsfolk of Whispering Wind play matchmaker, trying to bring the two of them together. As Todd and Heather rekindle their love, she wonders if he will accept Angel as part of a package deal.

ANGEL MINE is a humorous contemporary romance. The lead charcaters are a warm duo and Todd's reaction to his daughter is both sad and amusing. However it is the eccentric townsfolk that make this novel worth reading. Their reaction to the New York invasion (also see AFTER TEX) is priceless. Sherryl Woods known for her romance and mystery novels has written a fabulous romantic romp in returning her readers to wonderful wacky Whispering Wind, Wyoming.

Read it in 1 day!

I found this book in a big box at a garage sale and paid a quarter for it. I came home and began to read it, not able to put it down, I finished it very early in the morning! I really loved the quick pace and snapping writing. My husband was amused to see me laughing while I read, especially since I had just been complaining about 3 other books I also bought and just knew I could not read after the first few paragraphs. I don't have the time or patience to try to figure out what author's, with too much time on their hands, are trying to say as they over-describe objects with obscure comparison. Sherryl Woods just found a new fan, I'm already thinking about which of her books to read next! The actual story was not as addictive as her style of writing, clear, fast-paced and very entertaining!

And she hadn't realized the high and mighty Dr. Wynn Jeffries was from the Seattle area. Furthermore, she couldn't imagine what he was doing on Blossom Street.

She'd never even met him, but she distrusted him profoundly and disliked him just as much. It was because of Dr. Jeffries that she'd been banned from a local bookstore. She'd had a small difference of opinion with the manager on the subject of Wynn's book. Apparently the bookseller was a personal friend of his, because she'd leaped to Dr. Jeffries's defense and had ordered K.O. out of the store. She'd even suggested K.O. take her future book-purchasing business elsewhere, which seemed unnecessarily extreme.

"K.O.," Bill Mulcahy muttered, distracting her. They sat across from each other at the French Café, filled to capacity during the midmorning rush. People lined up for coffee, and another line formed at the bakery counter. "Did you get all that?" he asked.

"Sure," K.O. said, returning her attention to him.

"Sorry—I thought I saw someone I knew." Oh, the things she was willing to do for some extra holiday cash. One witty Christmas letter written on her sister's behalf, and all of a sudden K.O. was the most sought-after woman at her brother-in-law's office. They all wanted her to write their Christmas letters. She'd been shocked to discover how much they'd willingly plunk down for it, too. Bill Mulcahy was the third person she'd met with this week, and his letter was the most difficult so far. Leno or Letterman would've had a hard time finding anything amusing about this man's life.

"I don't know what you're going to write," Bill continued. "It's been an exceptionally bad year. As I explained earlier, my son is in a detention home, my daughter's living with her no-good boyfriend and over Thanksgiving she announced she's pregnant. Naturally, marriage is out of the question."

"That is a bit of a challenge," K.O. agreed. She widened her eyes and stared again at the man who waited in the long line at the cash register. It was him; she was convinced of it now. The not-so-good doctor was—to put it in appropriately seasonal terms—a fruitcake. He was a child psychologist who'd written a book called The Free Child that was the current child-rearing rage.

To be fair, K.O. was single and not a mother. The only child-rearing experience she'd had was with her identical twin nieces, Zoe and Zara, whom she adored. Until recently, anyway. Overnight the five-year-olds had become miniature monsters and all because her sister had followed the "Free Child" rules as set out by Dr. Jeffries.

"My wife," Bill said, "is on the verge of a breakdown." K.O. pitied the poor woman—and her husband.

"We've written Christmas letters for years and while life wasn't always as perfect as we—well, as we implied…" He let the rest fade away.

"You painted the picture of a model family."

"Yes." Bill cleared his throat and offered her a weak smile. "Patti, that's my wife, chose to present a, shall we say, rosier depiction of reality." He exhaled in a rush. "We never included family pictures and if you met my son, you'd know why. Anyone looking at Mason would know in a minute that this kid isn't a member of the National Honor Society." He released his breath again and shook his head sadly. "Mason's into body piercing," Bill added. "He pierced his eyebrows, his nose, his lips, his tongue, his nipples—"

K.O. stopped him before he went any lower. "I get it."

"You probably don't, but that's lucky for you. Oh, and he dyed his hair green."

"Green?"

"He wears it spiked, too, and he…he does this thing with paint." Bill dropped his voice.

K.O. was sure she'd misunderstood. "I beg your pardon?"

"Mason doesn't call it paint. It's some form of cosmetic he smears across his face. I never imagined that my son would be rummaging through his mother's makeup drawer one day."

"I suppose that is a bit disconcerting," K.O. murmured.

"I forget the actual significance of the black smudges under his eyes and across his cheeks," Bill said. "To me it looks like he's some teenage commando."

Yes, this letter would indeed be a challenge. "Have you thought about skipping your Christmas letter this year?" K.O. asked hopefully.

"Yeah, I'd like to, but as I said, Patti's emotional health is rather fragile. She claims people are already asking about our annual letter. She's afraid that if we don't send it the same as we do every year, everyone will figure out that we're pitiful parents." His shoulders drooped. "In other words, we've failed our children."

"I don't think you've necessarily failed," K.O. assured him. "Most teenagers go through a rebellious stage."

"Did you?"

"Oh, sure."

"Did you pierce anything?"

"Well, I had my ears pierced…."

"That's not the same thing." He peered at her earrings, visible through her straight blond hair, which she wore loosely tied back. "And you only have one in each ear—not eight or ten like my son." He seemed satisfied that he'd proved his point. "Then you'll write our Christmas letter and smooth over the rough edges of our year?"

K.O. was less and less confident that she could pull this off. "I don't know if I'm your person," she said hesitantly. How could she possibly come up with a positive version of such a disastrous year? Besides, this side job was supposed to be fun, not real work. It'd begun as a favor to her sister and all of a sudden she was launching a career. At some stage she'd need to call a halt—maybe sooner than she'd expected.

Her client shifted in his seat. "I'll pay you double what you normally charge."

K.O. sat up straight. Double. He said he'd pay double? "Would four days be enough time?" she asked. Okay, so she could be bought. She pulled out her Day-Timer, checked her schedule and they set a date for their next meeting.

"I'll give you half now and half when you're finished." That seemed fair. Not one to be overly prideful, she held out her hand as he peeled off three fifty-dollar bills. Her fingers closed around the cash.

"I'll see you Friday then," Bill said, and reaching for his briefcase, he left the French Café carrying his latte in its takeout cup.

Looking out the windows with their Christmas garland, she saw that it had begun to snow again. This was the coldest December on record. Seattle's normally mild climate had dipped to below-freezing temperatures for ten days in a row. So much for global warming. There was precious little evidence of it in Seattle.

K.O. glanced at the coffee line. Wynn Jeffries had made his way to the front and picked up his hot drink. After adding cream and sugar—lots of both, she observed—he was getting ready to leave. K.O. didn't want to be obvious about watching him, so she took a couple of extra minutes to collect her things, then followed him out the door.

Even if she introduced herself, she had no idea what to say. Mostly she wanted to tell him his so-called Free Child movement—no boundaries for kids—was outright lunacy. How could he, in good conscience, mislead parents in this ridiculous fashion? Not that she had strong feelings on the subject or anything. Okay, so maybe she'd gone a little overboard at the bookstore that day, but she couldn't help it. The manager had been touting the benefits of Dr. Jeffries's book to yet another unsuspecting mom. K.O. felt it was her duty to let the poor woman know what might happen if she actually followed Dr. Jeffries's advice. The bookseller had strenuously disagreed and from then on, the situation had gotten out of hand.

Not wanting him to think she was stalking him, which she supposed she was, K.O. maintained a careful distance. If his office was in Seattle, it might even be in this neighborhood. After the renovations on Blossom Street a few years ago, a couple of buildings had been converted to office space. If she could discreetly discover where he practiced, she might go and talk to him sometime. She hadn't read his book but had leafed through it, and she knew he was a practicing child psychologist. She wanted to argue about his beliefs and his precepts, tell him about the appalling difference in her nieces' behavior since the day Zelda had adopted his advice.

She'd rather he didn't see her, so she dashed inconspicuously across the street to A Good Yarn, and darted into the doorway, where she pretended to be interested in a large Christmas stocking that hung in the display window. From the reflection in the window, she saw Dr. Jeffries walking briskly down the opposite sidewalk.

As soon as it was safe, she dashed from the yarn store to Susannah's Garden, the flower shop next door, and nearly fell over a huge potted poinsettia, all the while keeping her eyes on Dr. Jeffries. He proved one thing, she mused. Appearances were deceiving. He looked so…so normal. Who would've guessed that beneath that distinguished, sophisticated and—yes—handsome exterior lay such a fiend? Perhaps fiend was too strong a word. Yet she considered Wynn Jeffries's thinking to be nothing short of diabolical, if Zoe and Zara were anything to judge by.

No way!

K.O. stopped dead in her tracks. She watched as Wynn Jeffries paused outside her condo building, her very own building, entered the code and strolled inside.

Without checking for traffic, K.O. crossed the street again. A horn honked and brakes squealed, but she barely noticed. She was dumbfounded.

Speechless.

There had to be some mistake. Perhaps he was making a house call. No, that wasn't right. What doctor made house calls in this day and age? What psychologist made house calls ever? Besides, he didn't exactly look like the compassionate type. K.O. bit her lip and wondered when she'd become so cynical. It'd happened around the same time her sister read Dr. Jeffries's book, she decided.

The door had already closed before she got there. She entered her code and stepped inside just in time to see the elevator glide shut. Standing back, she watched the floor numbers flicker one after another.

"Katherine?"

K.O. whirled around to discover LaVonne Young, her neighbor and friend. LaVonne was the only person who called her Katherine. "What are you doing, dear?"

K.O. pointed an accusing finger past the elegantly decorated lobby tree to the elevator.

LaVonne stood in her doorway with her huge tomcat, named predictably enough, Tom, tucked under her arm. She wore a long shapeless dress that was typical of her wardrobe, and her long graying hair was drawn back in a bun. When K.O. had first met her, LaVonne had reminded her of the character Auntie Mame. She still did. "Something wrong with the elevator?" LaVonne asked.

"No, I just saw a man…" K.O. glanced back and noticed that the elevator had gone all the way up to the penthouse suite. That shouldn't really come as a shock. His book sales being what they were, he could easily afford the penthouse.

LaVonne's gaze followed hers. "That must be Dr. Jeffries."

"You know him?" K.O. didn't bother to hide her interest. The more she learned, the better her chances of engaging him in conversation.

"Of course I know Dr. Jeffries," the retired accountant said. "I know everyone in the building."

"How long has he lived here?" K.O. demanded. She'd been in this building since the first week it was approved for occupation. So she should've run into him before now.

"I believe he moved in soon after the place was renovated. In fact, the two of you moved in practically on the same day."

That was interesting. Of course, there was a world of difference between a penthouse suite and the first-floor, one-bedroom unit she owned. Or rather, that the bank owned and she made payments on. With the inheritance she'd received from her maternal grandparents, K.O. had put a down payment on the smallest, cheapest unit available. It was all she could afford at the time—and all she could afford now. She considered herself lucky to get in when she did.

"His name is on the mailbox," LaVonne said, gesturing across the lobby floor to the mailboxes.

"As my sister would tell you, I'm a detail person." It was just the obvious she missed.

Christmas Wishes: Christmas LettersRainy Day Kisses

This book was laugh out loud funny!!!! I have just recently discovered Debbie Macomber, and I thought this book was considerably different from the Blossom Street books I have been reading. I think Debbie Macomber is a very versatile author. It isn't often I read someone's work that I can both laugh and cry at!!! Way to go!!!

Oh, and I love the confrontation between author/doctor and just a regular family member!!!!

I am not a big Debbie Macomber fan ... but this book fit the mood when one is sick and don't want to think about anything other than light fluffy romances. This book fits the bill for me today. It's cute, syrupy sweet and a fast read. I managed to read it within a day of taking care of a sick kid, sick hubby, changing the sheets and doing the laundry and all this while not feeling so hot myself. This book is perfect for those calagon moments that you wish you could have just to take you away from the mess at hand.

This book has two stories in one book. The first one deals with K.O. who doesn't have time for pretenses such as her sister allowing her twin daughters to have the rule of the roost and she definitely did not like the author of the book, Wynn Jefferies' theories on how to raise children. Then she gets set up on a date with the author and predictably, love follows.

The second one is about a woman who is on the fast-track to being a VP of a popular sporting goods company only to realize that she is missing the excitement of having her own family when she babysits her nine-month-old niece. Then her next-door neighbor comes over and saves the day and captures her heart. Love is bliss.

This is a cute book for those times when you do need a lighter fluffy reading ... or for that long plane ride home.

K.O.'s Eating Disorder

I liked these stories - so four stars.
But I was disappointed - and frankly, concerned - to see K.O weighing herself first-thing every single morning, agonizing over gaining 2lbs, reducing caloric intake for the day, spending the day on the treadmill, starving herself, and brushing her teeth whenever she gets hungry so she won't eat. The only things she eats, when she's alone, is stuff like 'a piece of dry toast' for breakfast, and 'a cup of yogurt and a glass of V8' for lunch. She has a bran muffin once a week, as a treat. Her stomach is rumbling, and she can't bear to look at food, but she refuses to eat. Instead, she gets on the treadmill. Because Wynn "won't want her" if he finds out she gained weight. Really, she says that. And she's talking about 2 pounds!!

If this is how K.O. lives her life, I think she's questionably close to suffering from an eating disorder. She's like one of those anorexic girls in the Intervention show who say "I'm just watching what I eat, ok? Back off!" But daily weigh-ins, having rules about reduced calorie days, brushing your teeth instead of eating... This is not a healthy way to live. She's certainly coming in under the 2000 calorie line, and then she works out for 4 miles on the treadmill? When people admit to doing that, they often have deeper problems.

K.O. sets a bad example for the rest of us by making it seem normal, even desirable, to be so fixated on her weight (instead of her strength and her health) and to take measures like these to manage her weight. I think K.O.'s next stop on Blossom street should be a counselor.

From the moment Rosie Cox entered Cedar Cove's divorce court, she'd felt a renewed sense of failure—not to mention betrayal. Who wouldn't feel that way? After seventeen years of what she'd believed to be a reasonably good marriage, Zach's infidelity was the last thing she'd expected.

He'd never openly admitted to the affair. She hadn't found her husband in a compromising situation, hadn't found any concrete evidence—no matchbooks from expensive restaurants, no jewelry receipts or motel bills— but in her heart she knew. A wife always does.

Rosie owned up to the truth—she was angry and she'd expressed that anger by making this divorce as complicated and difficult as she possibly could. Why should she go easy on Zach or walk away from their marriage without one hell of a fight? And fight she had, with both fists raised.

As she turned away from the judge, the final decree in her hand, she realized she'd made another mistake.

Rosie had assumed that once the divorce was granted, the anger and bitterness of these dreadful months would be lifted. Wrong again. An even heavier burden had been added. When the joint custody agreement she and Zach had so carefully worked out, point by point, was presented to Judge Olivia Lockhart, the judge had rejected it.

Instead, Judge Lockhart had stated that it was emotionally detrimental to kids to shuffle them between residences every few days. Allison and Eddie needed stable lives, according to Judge Lockhart, and they hadn't asked for the divorce. Some people considered the judge innovative, Rosie thought, disgruntled. How about interfering? Or out of her mind? Because—of all the crazy settlements—she'd awarded the children their house. That meant Rosie and Zach would be the ones moving in and out.

Talk about ridiculous! Talk about impossible.

Now that the divorce was final, Rosie and Zach would have to figure out some kind of living arrangements. The ramifications of what they'd agreed to were starting to hit Rosie and she hadn't even left the courtroom.

"Rosie," Sharon Castor, her attorney, said as soon as they were in the silent hallway outside the courtroom. "We have to meet with your ex-husband."

One look told Rosie that Sharon was as flustered as she was herself.

Otto Benson, Zach's lawyer, joined them. Although he remained outwardly calm, his face was tense. She dared not glance in Zach's direction. In fact, she'd avoided looking at her ex-husband from the moment she'd walked into the courtroom.

"Let's get a conference room and discuss the details," Zach's attorney said.

Rosie peered at Zach, standing behind his lawyer. He didn't seem any happier than she was with this decision, but she'd keel over in a dead faint before she let him know how she felt.

"Rosie and I should be able to work this out ourselves," Zach said with an edge of irritation.

Given the way everything had gone so far, that suggestion wasn't promising. "If you remember, it took us weeks of haggling to come up with this joint custody agreement," she pointed out. She enjoyed reminding him what a jerk he'd been. Rosie supposed Zach was hoping to avoid more attorneys' fees. Too bad. If he ended up with less money to spend on his girlfriend, that wasn't her concern.

Fists clenched, Zach snarled something under his breath. Probably just as well she couldn't hear it, Rosie decided, proud of her own display of self-control.

"What makes you think we're capable of agreeing to anything without a mediator?" she asked sarcastically.

"Fine," Zach muttered, with a pout reminiscent of their nine-year-old son. Staring at him now, Rosie had trouble believing she'd ever loved Zachary Cox. Not only was he smug and argumentative and self-righteous, he had no idea what it meant to be a husband and father. Granted, Zach was a handsome man; not only that, his appearance proclaimed his success as a businessman, a professional. Although, in her opinion, anyone with half a brain would instantly peg him for an accountant. He had that narrowed look about his dark eyes, as if he spent too many hours a day squinting at columns of tiny numbers. Despite that, he was appealing to the eye with his broad shoulders— which nicely set off his expensive suit—and thick, dark hair. At one time he'd been an athlete, and even now he routinely jogged and kept in shape.

Rosie had loved the firmness of his muscles as she stroked his back during lovemaking. Of course, it'd been months since they'd slept in the same bed, and much longer since they'd actually made love.

Rosie didn't even remember the last time. Had she known, she might have appreciated it more, lingered a moment longer at her husband's side, savored the feel of his arms around her. One thing was certain: Zach hadn't been interested in her from the day he'd hired Janice Lamond as his personal assistant.

The thought of him entwined with Janice nearly suffocated Rosie and she forcefully shoved the image from her mind. Anger and revulsion at her husband's—no, ex-husband's—unfaithfulness rose like bile in the back of her throat.

Zach's raised voice caught her attention; apparently he'd agreed to have their attorneys negotiate this added complication to their divorce decree. Otto was checking with the clerk for an empty conference room.

Once a private room in the law library was secured, Zach and his attorney sat at one side of the table, across from Rosie and hers.

Even the attorneys seemed perplexed by the situation. "I can't say I've ever heard of such a decree before," Sharon said, starting the conversation.

"Me, neither." Otto frowned. "This is one for the books."

"Fine," Zach said in a curt voice, "it's unusual, but we're both adults. We can figure this out. I know I was sincere about putting the children first." He glared at Rosie, as if to suggest she hadn't been.

"If you were sincere, you would've had second thoughts about sleeping with that slut." Rosie hadn't intended to be argumentative, but if her ex-husband was so concerned about their children's welfare, he would never have broken his wedding vows.

"I refuse to dignify that remark by responding to it," Zach said through gritted teeth. "Besides if you were home more, instead of volunteering for every cause known to mankind, every cause except your children, you'd—"

"Well, I refuse to allow you to blame me for what you've done." Her volunteer efforts were Zach's big complaint. He had his wish; she'd had to resign from every position she held and seek paid employment. She hoped he was happy. For the first time since their children were born, Rosie wasn't a stay-at-home mom.

"I thought we were here to discuss this divorce decree?" Zach asked with a bored look, an expression that was obviously for her benefit. "If we're going to trade insults I'd rather not pay our attorneys to listen."

That's right, Rosie mused, deriving a small sense of satisfaction out of knowing that Zach was responsible for both sets of attorneys' fees. He was the one with the high-paying job. She was currently taking summer classes to update her teaching certificate. Classes Zach was paying for. That was another notch in her belt—another concession granted in their divorce settlement.

Her application was in with the South Kitsap School District and, considering all her connections, she shouldn't have any difficulty getting hired as a substitute teacher in September.

"Let's make a list of what we can agree on," Sharon said briskly, ignoring the antagonism between Rosie and Zach. "Despite the breakdown of your marriage, you both claim you want to keep the needs of your children first and foremost."

Rosie nodded and so did Zach.

Sharon smiled. She was a no-nonsense woman who wasn't swayed by emotion. "Okay, that gives us a place to start."

"I want to compliment you both on your attitudes," Otto said, removing a legal pad from his briefcase as if to prove he was earning his pay. Zach had chosen the best and, for that matter, so had Rosie. Both attorneys came with high price tags.

"Yeah," Zach said sarcastically. "If we got along any better, we might've stayed married."

"You know who to blame for that," Rosie snapped.

"Yes, I do," he snapped right back. "How many nights were you actually home? How many dinners did you cook? If you don't remember, I do. Damn few."

Sharon sighed audibly. "Okay, the kids come first, and at this point, they have the house, which means Rosie will need to find somewhere else to live for the three days a week when Zach's staying with them."

Somewhere else to live? Rosie's head jerked up as the shock ran up and down her spine. The reality—the repercussions of the judge's edict—had just started to sink in.

"And pay half the mortgage on the house," Zach added, smiling at her benignly.

"But I can't—" Rosie hadn't realized, hadn't thought that far in advance. "I don't have a job yet—how am I supposed to afford an apartment on top of everything else?" This was grossly unfair. Surely Zach could see that such a demand was unreasonable. She had a life, too, and no way of building it if every penny she earned went into paying for two separate residences.

Rosie stared at Zach. He returned her look, unblinking.

"I have a suggestion," Sharon said.

"Let's hear it." Zach's lawyer sounded eager, if not desperate, for ideas.

"If Zach spends three days a week at the house with the children, then his apartment will sit empty, is that right?" She turned to Zach for verification.

Rosie studied him, too. In essence, Sharon was asking if Zach intended to move Janice into the apartment, Janice and her son, who was the same age as Eddie.

"The apartment will be empty," Zach said emphatically.

"What if—" Sharon glanced from one to the other "—Rosie moves into the apartment during the time you're at the house? You did say it was a two-bedroom apartment, didn't you?"

Objections shot up like weeds in Rosie's fertile mind. She didn't want anything to do with Zach. She certainly didn't want to be put in a situation where she had to deal with being around him or his things—or what had been their things. Nor did she want to be privy to any information regarding his relationship with his girlfriend.

"No way am I letting Rosie in my apartment." Apparently Zach shared her qualms. "We're divorced. It took months to get that way. Rosie wanted out and she got her wish."

"You were the one who moved out," she reminded him scornfully.

"Correction. You kicked me out."

"If you'll recall, you insisted I see an attorney." She couldn't believe how convenient his memory was.

Zach snorted and looked at Sharon. "More fool me."

Rosie's attorney raised both hands in a pleading gesture. "Listen, it's just a suggestion—a way of saving money for you both." She turned to Rosie. "You'll be fortunate to find a place, even a studio apartment, for less than five, six hundred dollars a month."

"Zach will have to pay—"

"The hell I will!"

"The divorce is final," Otto Benson stated. "Zach isn't responsible for anything more than what's already been agreed to."

Rosie's gaze flew to her attorney, and Sharon reluctantly nodded. All at once, this was more than Rosie could bear. Not only had she lost her husband, but now she was being forced out of her home, too. Moisture welled in her eyes, and she managed to blink it away. Hell would freeze over before she let Zach know what he was doing to her.

A long moment passed before Zach finally spoke. "Okay, I'll agree to let Rosie stay in the apartment on the days I'm at the house, as long as she's willing to split the rent."

Rosie was well aware that she had no choice, but she did have her pride and she was determined to hold on to that. "On one condition," she insisted, lifting her head.

"Now what?" Zach asked with a long-suffering sigh.

"I don't want you bringing that woman into the family home. I want our house to be a safe place for the children. In other words, I don't want Allison and Eddie exposed to your women."

"What?" Zach glared at her as though she'd spoken a foreign language.

"You heard me," she said vehemently, meeting his angry eyes. "This divorce has been hard enough on the kids without you parading Janice or any other woman you decide to date through my home. I want the house off-limits to your…your floozies."

"Floozies?" Zach smirked. "Fine, no floozies. And the same goes for you. I don't want you bringing any men to the house, either. No studs, no hotties, no boy toys, no—"

"Oh, that's rich," Rosie broke in, putting an end to his ridicule. In seventeen years she'd never so much as looked at another man. Not since the day she'd met Zach.

"Do you or don't you agree?" her ex-husband challenged.

"Of course I agree!"

"Good."

"Perfect."

With their attorneys present, they made decisions about a number of other issues, and Sharon quickly wrote up an agreement. Zach's attorney reviewed it, and then both Zach and Rosie signed it.

By the time she left the courthouse, Rosie felt as if she'd been pummeled by wave after wave in a stormy sea. Strange as it seemed, her heart actually ached. For weeks she'd dreaded this day and at the same time longed for it, just so the divorce would finally be over. Now she wasn't sure what she felt, other than this deep pain that threatened to overpower her.

Nine-year-old Eddie was shooting baskets when Rosie pulled into the driveway at 311 Pelican Court. In a little more than a month, school would start again. Perhaps then their lives would return to some semblance of routine.

Eddie caught the basketball and held it against his side as he waited for her to park the car in the garage. His sad dark eyes watched Rosie as he stepped aside so she could drive past.

Fifteen-year-old Allison was in the kitchen, microwav-ing a hot dog for lunch. She turned and stared at Rosie, eyes glittering defiantly. She resembled Zach so much just then.

"How'd it go?" Eddie asked, following Rosie into the kitchen. He continued to hold the basketball.

"All right, I guess."

The microwave beeped and Allison removed the steaming wiener, devoid of a bun. As if it had suddenly lost its appeal, she set the plate on the countertop and studied Rosie.

"There's been a…minor complication," Rosie announced. She didn't believe in hiding the truth from her children, especially when it involved something that would affect them.

"What kind of complication?" Eddie asked, pulling out a kitchen chair. He balanced the basketball on the table, one hand supporting it. Allison crossed her arms and leaned against the counter, pretending to be bored; still, she didn't leave the room as she so often did.

With effort Rosie managed to show a bit of enthusiasm for Judge Lockhart's decree. "Well…you guys won't be moving in and out of the house every few days, after all."

Allison and Eddie shared a look of surprise. Trying to sound positive, Rosie explained Judge Lockhart's decision and briefly outlined how the switch would work.

3rd visit to Cedar Cove was great!

311 Pelican Court, the third installment in the Cedar Cove series, was an excellent read. The family at this address are Rosie and Zach Cox with their children Allison and Eddie. Rosie and Zach are ordered through their divorce to let the children stay at the house and they are to find alternate housing on the days they don't have custody. This way the kids aren't going from one house to the other. They stay put and it's Zach and Rosie moving back and forth constantly.
This book isn't just about the Cox family though. All the characters from the previous book are in this one too. They all have their own problems and situations to get through. There is also some new characters added in and some characters from the previous book that play a bigger role in this book. This keeps the book entertaining and moving.
Debbie Macomber writes storylines everyone can believe. There is the Olivia, Jack, Stan "love triangle", Grace Sherman recovering from the death of her ex-husband Dan. Also the death of the mystery man at the bed and breakfast. Maryellen and Jon play a role in this book also trying to get along after the birth of their daughter. There is also bit in Grace's storyline involving Olivia's brother that is very interesting. I can't say more or I'll ruin the book.
311 Pelican Court is a good book filled with characters that could be your next door neighbors. There is enough going on in this small town that you will not be able to put this book down until you've read the last word. A definite must read!

The life and loves of Cedar Cove

This book is the third in the Cedar Cove Series and reading it is like coming back to visit old friends. The book features Rosie and Zach Cox, a newly-divorced couple who have been instructed by Judge Olivia Lockhart to keep their children in the family home and to alternate moving in to have visitation with their children. They find this a very awkward way to live and they also discover many other problems with the divorce. Olivia is still a major character and she is dealing with two men who want her to marry her. Her best friend Grace is learning to deal with widowhood and she also finds herself in a romantic triangle. Grace's daughter Maryellen has an out-of-wedlock baby and tries to keep the father out of his daughter's life. Olivia's mother Charlotte meets an interesting man and they soon find themselves in a protest march together. The death of a mysterious man in a local bed and breakfast is never completely resolved and it leaves some unfinished business to be tackled in book #4 of the series. This is a delightful and very readable book and the series just seems to get better with each addition.

Third Trip To Cedar Cove Continues This Excellent Relationship Drama

Debbie Macomber has created a marvelous little town everyone would want to live in. Set on the water's edge near Seattle, this charming town has characters aplenty with secrets to share and relationships for readers to revel in.

All the characters we have come to love from the first two novels---Olivia, Jack, Grace, Maryellen, Charlotte, Justine, Cecilia---reappear as their stories progress. Others who played minor roles previously--- Bob, Peggy, Roy, Corrie-- begin to step into the spotlight. This neat handling of characters keeps the storylines fresh and the reader intrigued.

The residents of 311 Pelican Court are Rosie and Zach Cox. We met them previously when their seventeen year marriage ended in divorce. Now they are dealing with the fallout from Judge Lockhart's ruling---they must alternate nights in the house and not force their children, Allison and Eddie, to be tossed from parent to parent. How they cope with this unusual arrangement and come to terms with the misery they have inflicted on each other is the focal point of this installment.

We finally learn Jon's secret and the mystery of the dead man at the local B&B heats up and is on the brink of a resolution. Olivia's love triangle with Jack takes many steps forward and backwards as ex-husband Stan stands poised to win her back. Maryellen struggles with being a single mom, and Grace allows a dirty little secret to take over her life.

I'm hooked on Cedar Cove and can't wait to enjoy the next installment of this multi-faceted town that lies midway between Mitford and Peyton Place on the sex and sin meter.
